Trump makes bold statement: Russia and Ukraine to begin ceasefire talks immediately

U.S. President Donald Trump has made a striking claim following a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that Russia and Ukraine are set to begin immediate negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire.

Describing the discussion with Putin as “very well,” Trump suggested that meaningful dialogue is underway, but noted that the final terms of any ceasefire must be decided by the two nations themselves.

On the Russian side, President Putin told reporters that Moscow is willing to work with Ukraine on drafting a peace memorandum and is open to “compromises,” though he stopped short of providing specific details. He emphasized the importance of tackling the “root causes” of the conflict and said the negotiations appear to be “on the right track.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also weighed in, proposing a potential “high-level” summit involving Ukraine, Russia, the U.S., the European Union, and the United Kingdom to help find a diplomatic resolution.

Zelensky called on the U.S. to stay deeply involved in the process and stressed that progress hinges on Russia demonstrating a genuine willingness to participate in constructive talks.

While challenges remain, the latest statements from global leaders signal a cautious but potentially promising shift toward dialogue and de-escalation in the ongoing conflict.

  • How Russia-Ukraine war affected Nigeria’s crude oil inflows – NNPCL

How Russia-Ukraine war affected Nigeria’s crude oil inflows – NNPCL

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has provided insight into how the lingering Russia – Ukraine war impacted Nigerian crude oil inflows in the international oil market.

The NNPC Ltd said this led to a dip in demand from the once-dependable Asian market at the onset of hostilities in the Eastern bloc.

Maryamu Idris, Executive Director, Crude and Condensate, NNPC Trading Limited made this known in a panel presentation at the Argus European Crude Conference in London.

Idris, in a statement on Thursday by Mr Femi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd, said Nigeria’s crude export to India dwindled.

According to Idris, in addition to the substantial price shocks impacting commodity and energy prices globally, the conflict triggered a situation where India, a primary destination for Nigerian grades, increased its appetite for discounted Russian barrels.

This, she said was to the detriment of some Nigerian volumes.

“To illustrate the extent of this shift, Nigeria’s crude exports to India dwindled from approximately 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the six months preceding the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine to 194,000 in the subsequent six months afterwards.

“And so far, this year, only around 120,000 bpd of Nigerian crude volumes have made their way to India,” she said.

On the other hand, she said Nigerian crude flow to Europe had increased in a bid to fill supply gaps left by the ban on Russian crude.

She explained that six months before the war, 678,000 bpd of Nigerian crude grades went to Europe, compared to 710,000 bpd six months later and 730,000 bpd so far this year.

“This trend makes it evident that Nigerian grades are increasingly becoming a significant component in the post-war palette of European refiners.

“Several Nigerian distillate-rich grades have become a steady preference for many European refiners, given the absence of Russian Urals and diesel.

“Forcados Blend, Escravos Light, Bonga, and Egina appear to be the most popular, and our latest addition — Nembe Crude – fits well into this basket.

“This was a strong factor behind our choice of London and the Argus European Crude Conference as the most ideal launch hub for the grade,” Idris said.

Idris said Nigeria faced production challenges aggravated by COVID-19 pandemic, including reduced investment, supply chain disruptions, ageing oil fields and oil theft, contributing to production declines in the second half of 2022 and early 2023.

She, however, said that the challenges were fast becoming a thing of the past with the implementation of a new framework for the domestic petroleum industry (PIA 2021), rejuvenating business landscape and repositioning NNPCL for a more commercial approach.

According to her, NNPC Limited has secured vital partnerships with notable financial institutions to promote upstream investments to restore and sustainably grow production capacity in the coming years.

“NNPC Limited is championing concerted efforts in partnership with host communities and private stakeholders to address the security and environmental challenges in the Niger Delta to further fortify production growth.

“We have already begun seeing significant progress on the rebound. In September 2023, Nigeria recorded its highest crude oil and condensate output in nearly two years, reaching 1.72 million barrels per day.

This, we believe, is just the beginning of our production rebound.

She affirmed that NNPC Limited was also increasing its participation in the downstream sector in line with a ‘wells-to-wheels’ approach, taking the country’s unique hydrocarbon molecules as close as possible to end-users.

The vehicle for this, she said, is the restructured NNPC Trading Company, focused on growing NNPC’s presence in the global market for crude, condensate, gas, and petroleum products.

The Argus Crude European Crude Conference Panel Session was held with the theme: ‘The Invisible Hand: How Are Shareholders and Asset Managers Meeting the Crude Industry? What Does This Mean for the Future of Crude in Europe?’’.

  • US President Biden speaks on supplying long range rockets to Ukraine

The president of United States President, Joe Biden, has said that he would never ship rockets  to Ukaraine that could get to Russia amid the war between the two European countries.

Asked if he’s got plans to fortify Ukraine’s weaponry and Army in the ongoing War, Biden replied that he doesn’t have plans to supply Ukraine long range rockets capable of reaching Russia.

“I won’t send anything that can fire into Russia,” Biden said.

Recall that the Biden administration is preparing to step up the kind of weaponry it is offering Ukraine by sending advanced, long-range rocket systems that are now the top request from Ukrainian officials.

The administration is leaning toward sending the systems as part of a larger package of military and security assistance to Ukraine, which could be announced as soon as next week.

It has wavered on whether to send the systems amid concerns raised within the National Security Council that Ukraine could use the new weapons to carry out offensive attacks inside Russia, according to officials.

On Friday, Russia warned that the United States would “cross a red line” if it supplies the systems to Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry made this disclosure via a signed statement on Thursday

The statement read, “Finland joining NATO is a radical change in the country’s foreign policy.

“Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical and other nature, in order to stop threats to its national security arising.”

The statement comes immediately after Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said the country should apply to join NATO “without delay.”

WAR: UN reveals number of journalists killed in Ukraine

According to data made available by the United Nations Data department, nothing less than seven journalist covering the Russia-Ukraine war have been killed.

The UN also revealed that many are also being targeted and facing unprecedented danger while performing their duty since Russia launched its attack in February.

The report also showed that the last time such a number of journalists were killed was in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea.

The alert from UN-appointed independent rights experts, including the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, cited “numerous reports” that journalists have been “targeted”.

Reports had it that journalists have been tortured, kidnapped, attacked and killed, or refused safe passage from cities and regions under siege.

The rights experts, in a statement, stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine had been made easier by the “silencing of critical voices over a prolonged period of time’’.

They highlighted the blocking of social media platforms and news websites in Russia, and the disruption of foreign media services.

According to experts, Moscow’s “massive labelling” of independent media as “foreign agents” is a source of concern.

“We deplore the systematic crackdown on political opponents, independent journalists and the media, human rights activists, protesters and many others opposing the Russian government’s actions.

“All these measures amount to the creation of a state monopoly on information in blatant violation of Russia’s international obligations,” they stated.

The rights experts stressed that disinformation is also being spread about Ukraine in Russian State-owned media,

He added that it’s time for the Eurpean country to accept the fact that it’s not a NATO member

“Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We understand that.

“We have heard for years that the doors were open, but we also heard that we could not join. It’s a truth and it must be recognized,” Zelensky said.

“It is clear that Ukraine is not a member of NATO; we understand this. … For years we heard about the apparently open door, but have already also heard that we will not enter there, and these are truths and must be acknowledged,” Zelensky said during a speech before the leaders of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).

The Ukrainian President said this during a call with the country’s military leaders on Tuesday.

Nursing the ambition of becoming a NATO member was the major reason Russia has continued to attack Ukraine since February.

Many Ukranians have fled the country to become refugees in many other European countries as a result of its invasion and bombardment by Russia.

Zelensky has asked NATO repeatedly to impose a “no-fly zone” over Ukraine, something the alliance has resisted doing for fear it could escalate the conflict.

Zelensky said he’s grateful for the sanctions imposed on Russia so far but that they are not enough and have not stopped Putin. He said there needs to be a ban on the Russian fleet in global ports, for Russian banks to be fully barred from international financial markets systems, for the Russian state to be deemed “terrorist,” as well as an embargo on “any kind of trade” with Russia. “Help yourself by helping us,” he said.

‘Vladimir Putin will be assasinated by a soldier’ – Primate Ayodele

The Leader Of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has again warned President Vladimir Putin of Russia over his invasion of Ukraine.

The prophet has sounded another note of warning to the Russian leader or risk being killed by a soldier

In a statement by his Media Aide, Osho Oluwatosin, the clergyman disclosed that plans to assassinate Putin is underway because he didn’t listen to God.

It would be recalled that Primate Ayodele warned the President a few days after the invasion that he should end the war because he foresees an assassination attempt on his life.

Unfortunately, Putin has not put an end to the war, causing more destruction in Ukraine as against the warnings sent to him by the man of God.

However, the clergyman noted that a Russian soldier will be used to execute the assassination plan.

‘’President Vladimir Putin of Russia has gone against God’s warnings. I warned him to put an end to the invasion of Ukraine but he didn’t listen. Just like Pharaoh whose heart was hardened against God’s children but perished, Putin will not go scot-free.

My Family is still stuck in Ukraine – Lobi Stars coach, Eddy Dombraye

Ex-Flying Eagles player and Lobi Stars head coach Eddy Dombraye has hinted that his wife and daughter are still stuck in Ukraine amid the Russia invasion.

According to a news platform The Cable, Dombraye said his wife and 5-year-old kid have been stuck at the train station in Ukraine trying to escape to Poland.

“They were supposed to catch the train from Boryspil which is about 15 kilometers away from Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, but the train was cancelled. They are currently looking for a different alternative,” he said.

“The train was supposed to move by 11 am this morning (Monday) but it was cancelled. I have been in touch with them every minute to work on alternatives.”

He said he returned to Nigeria from Ukraine after he got the job as Lobi Star head coach in September 2021.

Dombraye, whose other child is in Poland, also said his wife and two children were supposed to join him in Nigeria on Sunday but their flight was canceled due to the crisis.

“I have two kids and one of them is in Poland. He is a Polish citizen while the other one who is 5-year-old is currently with my wife,” he added.

“I followed the crisis on CNN since the first day it started. My wife and I thought the war will not escalate as we never anticipated it was ever going to happen. Even my wife said there would be no fight or war. Now, she is blaming herself and I am also blaming myself, wishing they had relocated earlier.

The worst part of it is that she has a Nigeria visa already. She was supposed to return as her flight originally was supposed to be yesterday to Nigeria, so, everything is so painful.

“We were both residing there. I have lived there since 2002. I based there like a dual citizen but moved down to Nigeria when I got the job as Lobi Star head coach in Nigeria. I have always wanted to come to Nigeria to coach. So, when I returned to Nigeria, I asked my wife to hold on for a few months until I am properly settled in the new space.

“Their flight was supposed to be yesterday. I returned to Nigeria on 6th of September 2021 as Lobi Stars football coach of Makurdi in the Nigerian Professional Football League ( NPFL).”

The 42-year-old also expressed concerns over his inability to rescue his family, adding that “this is the worst thing to happen to any parent.”

“As a football coach, I am trying to put on a brave face when I go out to meet my players but when I am indoors, it’s a different thing. It’s not like I am crying but I am feeling bad because I can’t actually do anything. With my 5-year-old kid trapped in a crisis area and I can’t help, It’s very bad. That is the worst thing to happen to any parent,” he continued.

“Yesterday, they were at home and today we decided to board the train that will take them to Lviv, a border town close to Poland so that my 18-year-old son who lives in Poland as a citizen would pick them up but the train was cancelled. They are currently looking for other alternatives to get there.

“I am worried because getting there is about 12 hours and it’s not a fast train.”

Dombraye is a former Super Eagles player who had played professionally in Poland and other parts of eastern Europe.
