  • Doping: International media welcome sanctions imposed on Russia

The international media on Wednesday mostly welcomed the sanctions imposed on Russia for its doping practices by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

At the same time there were plenty of raised eyebrows because football’s ruling body FIFA said the IOC ruling had “no impact” on the preparations for next year’s World Cup in Russia although its chief organiser Vitaly Mutko was banned for life from the Games by the IOC for his involvement in state-sponsored doping activities.

“Perhaps we should not be surprised. Football’s governing body has never cared much about the grubbier side of the game,” Britain’s The Guardian said.

The same paper noted the support for the IOC ruling which banned Russia as a team from the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang but allows individual Russians in.

“Many…recognised there was no perfect solution but were pleased the IOC had finally took firmer action,” The Guardian said.

For U.S. journalist Alan Abrahamson, “the task at hand was to make it seem like the IOC was coming down hard on the Russians … while simultaneously crafting a diplomatic compromise that would serve the IOC’s long-term purposes.”

Abrahamson said this compromise was mainly reached by allowing Russian athletes to compete in South Korea, not merely as independent Olympic athletes as others in the past but as “Olympic Athlete from Russia.”

This move, he said, is possibly designed to appease Russian President Vladimir Putin who will likely have the final saying on whether Russian athletes will be participating.

The New York Times said “the IOC went to great lengths in an attempt to avoid any call for a boycott, which presumably would come from Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

“Bridges for Putin” was the headline of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung editorial in Germany which said sanctions should have been much harsher in this “biggest doping conspiracy since the end of the Cold War.

The Sueddeutsche said the IOC was “sending a bizarre message in its subtext: doping is only then the worst sin and punished with up to life bans if individual athletes do it.

Not as bad is the cheating when an entire state organizes it with secret service meticulousness.”

Italy’s La Repubblica said that “the IOC choses a compromise but does punish” and Norway’s Verdens Gang said “the decision will make many angry in Russia but it was necessary.”

In Switzerland, the homer of the IOC, the Neue Zuercher Zeitung said “the decision allows everyone to more or less save face.”

  • Russian doping: IOC bans Russia from 2018 Winter Olympics

Russia has been banned from competing at next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang by the International Olympic Committee. But Russian athletes who can prove they are clean would be allowed to compete in South Korea under a neutral flag.

It follows an investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Games hosted by Russia in Sochi.

“This should draw a line under this damaging episode,” the IOC said.

IOC president Thomas Bach and his board – who made the announcement in Lausanne on Tuesday – came to the decision after reading through the findings and recommendations of a 17-month investigation headed up by the former president of Switzerland, Samuel Schmid.

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) has been suspended but the IOC said it will invite Russian clean athletes to compete in February under the name ‘Olympic Athlete from Russia’ (OAR).

Despite repeated Russian denials, the Schmid report has found evidence of “the systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system” which back up previous allegations of government involvement in cheating in the run-up to and during the Winter Olympics almost four years ago.

Bach said: “This was an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport. This should draw a line under this damaging episode and serve as a catalyst for a more effective anti-doping system.”

The Games in South Korea, which start on 9 February, will now be without one of the powerhouses of Olympic sport.

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung has said Nigeria is prepared to make a statement at Russia 2018, adding that Friday’s draw was a decent one.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria on Friday in Moscow drew Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D of the competition’s first round phase.

It was the fifth time Nigeria were being drawn alongside Argentina in Super Eagles’ six appearances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Minister, who spoke with newsmen on Saturday on the sidelines of the 2017 Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships in Abuja, said the draw was alright for Nigeria.

“In spite of the fact that Nigeria are underdogs, compared to the other teams in our group and based on their rankings in the world, the draw was good.

“But again, you have to look at how Nigeria prepared for the qualification competition. It is clear that Nigeria is determined to make a statement.

“Therefore, I am confident that Nigeria will surprise the world. We will be able to go as far as setting an African record, that is if we do not even make it to the final,” he said.

NAN reports that Nigeria will take on Croatia on June 16 in Kaliningrad, before facing Iceland on June 22 in Volgograd and Argentina on June 26 in St. Petersburg.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 14 and last till July 15.

All facts you need to know as Nigeria battles Argentina at Russia 2018 World Cup

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were, on Friday, drawn in Group D to play against Iceland, Croatia and nemesis, Argentina in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup scheduled to hold in Russia.

After going through their World Cup qualifying phase unbeaten (amassing a total of 14 points from a possible 18), the Eagles will again face a recurring historic war of battling Argentina, one of the terrifying team in group D for the fifth time, three times in a row.

Ahead of the clash between Argentina and Nigeria in Russia come 2018, here are the necessary facts you need to know about …

    CLEAN SHEETS

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have kept only one clean sheet in seven encounters with Argentina. That clean sheet was in 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup. Argentina on their part have kept three clean sheets. In 1995 at the Confederations Cup, and at the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups in South Korea /Japan and South Africa.

    BRACE HEROES

Only three players have bagged braces in the seven meetings between both teams. At the 1994 FIFA World Cup Claudio Caniggia scored a brace as the Diego Maradona-inspired side came back to win 2-1 after Samson Siasia’s sublime opener at the Foxboro, Boston. Ahmed Musa also scored a brace in Nigeria’s 3-2 loss to Argentina at the Estadio Beira-Rio stadium, in Brazil.

    GOAL DIFFERENCES

Nigeria have conceded 11 goals in seven meetings, scoring eight against Argentina. Samson Siasia was the first player to score a goal at the FIFA World Cup level between both teams while Marcos Rojo was the last player to find the back of the net.

Musa also became the first Nigerian player to score a brace in a World Cup finals match. That same encounter also saw Lionel Messi score a brace to help Argentina finish top of Group F with three wins from three games.

Didier Deschamps has extended his contract as manager of France until 2020, the president of the French Football Federation, FFF, has announced.

The former France captain, who won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, began his tenure in charge of Les Bleus in 2012 and was contracted to stay in charge until 2018 but will now remain in his post until Euro 2020.

  • Pope to visit Russia – Vatican

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on Tuesday that there was “positive momentum” behind the idea of Pope Francis visiting Russia, but suggested there was more work to be done if it were to happen.

Parolin, speaking at a joint news conference in Moscow alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, did not give any date for such a possible visit.

The Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart in 1054.

The pope, leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, is seeking to improve ties, and last year in Cuba held what was the first ever meeting between a Roman Catholic pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch.

Parolin said he had also used his talks in the Russian capital to also raise certain difficulties faced by the Catholic Church in Russia.

He said that Moscow and the Vatican disagreed about the plight of Christians in certain parts of the world.

    He did not elaborate.

Parolin, who is due later on Tuesday to meet Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, said he also believed Russia could play an important role when it came to helping solve a crisis in Venezuela because of its close relations with Caracas.
