Rwanda President comments on Arsenal’s shock loss to Brentford

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has reacted to Arsenal’s shock defeat to newly promoted Brentford in this season’s league opener on Friday night.

Arsenal were stunned 2-0 by Brentford who made their first top-flight appearance in 74 years.

Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard were the heroes for Brentford as their goals in either half, secured the first win of the new campaign.

And Kagame, an Arsenal fan admitted Brentford were deserved winners.

“What?? It’s football, it’s a loss of Arsenal at/to Brentford,” he wrote on Twitter. “Brentford deserved to win and they did. The game itself aside Arsenal and the fans don’t deserve to kind of get used to this….NO !!! I say this as one of the big fans of Arsenal. The change has taken too long to come!

“It’s been a struggle of about decade(s) -ups & downs-more downs until this point. Can’t we have a plan that really works?? One part to look at is how we deal in the market- players we buy to execute the plan. The touch & go mentality does not bring change.

“We just must NOT excuse or Accept mediocrity. A team has to be built with purpose to win win win. So that when we lose….it was not to be expected! I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests. I hope they know too or even accept it!!! End.”

Rwanda becomes first African nation to use Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

Rwanda began its COVID-19 vaccine campaign on Friday, becoming the first nation in Africa to use pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s doses that require ultra-cold storage.

Authorities began transporting Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots round the hilly nation of 12 million people after they arrived earlier this week, using helicopters to reach far-flung parts.

“This means that I will die when God wants because the coronavirus cannot kill me now,” 90-year-old Stephanie Nyirankuriza said, leaning on a walking stick after her shot at a health centre just east of the capital Kigali.

As in most nations, health workers and the elderly are first in line as President Paul Kagame’s government plans to vaccinate up to 30 per cent of Rwandans by the end of this year.

The Kagame government, which prides itself on efficiency and technological prowess but is often criticised as authoritarian, has installed special infrastructure to keep the Pfizer vaccine at the required -70 degrees.

At some centres, people were required to sign consent forms before receiving the shots.

Sitting in a makeshift tent awaiting her turn, Urusaro Ntoranyi, 70, said she was confident the vaccine was safe.

“I have children who got COVID-19,” she added, saying that they survived but two other relatives had died.

Those vaccinated were required to stay for about 15 minutes in case of side effects.

“This is like lengthening my life span,” 69-year-old Sisiyani Rusenyanteko, a community health worker and father-of-nine, exulted after an AstraZeneca shot.
Rwanda has so far received 102,960 and 240,000 doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines respectively via the global COVAX facility.

Rwanda’s Health Minister Daniel Ngamije said he expected to get more but did not say from where.

“The turnout is good,” he said, shortly after receiving his Pfizer shot, adding the doses had been distributed to over 500 health facilities countrywide.

Rwanda has reported just more than 19,000 cases and 265 deaths.

  • 1994 Genocide: Rwanda’s most wanted man with $5m bounty on his head arrested in France

1994 Genocide: Rwanda’s most wanted man with $5m bounty on his head arrested in France

Rwandan genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga was arrested on Saturday near Paris after 25 years on the run, accused of playing a leading role in one of the worst massacres of the 20th century.

The 84-year-old, who is Rwanda’s most-wanted man and had a $5m bounty on his head, was living under a false identity in a flat in Asnieres-Sur-Seine, according to the French justice ministry.

French gendarmes arrested him at 05:30 GMT on Saturday. Kabuga had been hiding with the complicity of his children. A police statement described him as “one of the world’s most wanted fugitives”.

A Hutu businessman, Kabuga is accused of funding militias that massacred about 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus over 100 days in 1994.

“Since 1994, Felicien Kabuga, known to have been the financier of Rwanda genocide, had with impunity stayed in Germany, Belgium, Congo-Kinshasa, Kenya, or Switzerland,” a justice ministry statement said.

The arrest paves the way for bringing the fugitive in front of the Paris appeal court and later to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Lewis Mudge from New York-based Human Rights Watch said “it is a huge day for Rwanda”.

“Felicien Kabuga is one of the big fish. He is one of the last remaining individuals still out there who is alleged to have had a planning purpose with regards to the Rwanda genocide,” Mudge told Al Jazeera.

Kabuga was indicted on genocide charges by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Rwandan prosecutors have said financial documents found in the capital, Kigali, after the genocide indicated that Kabuga used his companies to import vast quantities of machetes that were used to slaughter people.

The wealthy businessman also was accused of establishing the station Radio Television Mille Collines that broadcast vicious propaganda against the ethnic Tutsi, as well as training and equipping the Interahamwe militia that led the killing spree.

Kabuga was close to former President Juvenal Habyarimana, whose death when his plane was shot down over Kigali sparked the 100-day genocide. Kabuga’s daughter married Habyarimana’s son.

Kabuga is expected to be transferred to the custody of the UN mechanism, where he will stand trial.

Phil Clark, a professor at SOAS University of London, said the arrest was significant as Kabuga played a crucial role in the mass killings.

“The genocide could not have happened without Kabuga, he basically bankrolled the entire genocide,” Clark told Al Jazeera.

“He basically produced, created and funded the militias that carried out many of the largest massacres during the genocide. He also bankrolled the main ‘hate’ radio station that incited many of the key massacres, and he also enabled the import of about 500,000 machetes, without which the killing spree would have been impossible. Without Kabuga, the genocide couldn’t have happened.”

Olivier Olsen, head of the association of homeowners in the building where he lived, described Kabuga as “someone very discreet … who murmured when you said hello”.

Two other Rwandan genocide suspects, Augustin Bizimana and Protais Mpiranya, are still being pursued by international justice.

Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), said Kabuga’s arrest is a reminder that those responsible for genocide can be brought to account, “even 26 years after their crimes”.

He added: “Today’s arrest underlines the strength of our determination.”

Rwandan Ambassador’s Son Wins Nature Photography Contest at AUN

A final-year student of Communications and Multimedia Design (CMD) at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Mr. Yvan Kamanzi, has emerged as the winner of the just-concluded Birds of AUN competition.

Yvan is the son of the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Satnislas Kamanzi. Software Engineering major, Chukwuma Stephen emerged second-place winner while Assistant Professor of English Mohammed Tristan Purvis, won third place.

AUN President, Dr. Dawn Dekle, who initiated the ‘Birds of AUN Competition,’ announced the winners early December, at the lobby of the Dr. Robert Pastor e-library building. Global conservation watchdog National Geographic had designated 2018 as the Year of the Bird, ‘bringing attention to the threats birds face and reigniting conservation efforts.’

Dr. Dekle had introduced the contest in January after she noticed the many beautiful birds on the campus.

President Dekle, who is leading the university through a strategic sustainability agenda, had challenged students, faculty and staff to watch and photograph ‘the magnificent birds that inhabit our campus,’ and share their observation.

Mentioned in Mr. Kamanzi’s winning entry was the blue-headed Coucal (Centropus monachus), a bird, he said: “chooses to remain aloof.”

Like all coucals, the blue-headed has very long claws that allow it to feed on tiny insects and amphibians. Their voices are deep with resonant “coo” phrases. They sit upright as they perch and sing on top of trees and branches. They are interesting to watch and do interesting things. The blue-headed Coucal can be found lurking around treetops behind Dorm EE’s open fields and the AUN huts behind the School of Law”.

The winners received N90,000 in cash prizes plus certificates.

Six semi-finalists were recognized, and each received a certificate of participation. They include Cyril Oni, Ifeatu Uzodinma, Jessica Gwadi, Terdoo Orje-Ishegh, Chiedozie Joseph, and Ruth Unde.

  • AU Summit: Buhari cancels Rwanda trip, withdraws from signing African trade agreement

President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled his trip to Kigali, Rwanda scheduled for Monday.

Buhari was expected to attend an Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) on Tuesday, March 21, to sign the framework agreement for establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The agreement is expected to allow free trade among all countries that sign.

While the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approved Nigeria’s participation and signing of the agreement, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had strongly warned against the move. The country’s highest labour body said the decision may affect the nation’s manufacturing sector and lead to loss of jobs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday signed by its spokesperson, Tope Elias-Fatile, said Mr. Buhari cancelled the trip in order “to allow more time for input from Nigerian stakeholders”.

Sources at the presidency said the the first advanced team of the president had already travelled to Kigali on Friday but had now been asked to return home.

  • CHAN 2018: Wasteful Super Eagles held by Rwanda’s Amavubi

The home-based Super Eagles failed to claim a win as they were held 0-0 by Rwanda in their opening match of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Monday.

Nigeria and Rwanda settled for a barren draw in their Group C opener at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangiers, Morocco.

The stalemate leaves the Super Eagles in joint second position in the group, two points behind Libya who beat Equatorial Guinea 3-0 earlier on Monday.

Libya maintains top spot of the group thanks to their 3-0 humbling of Equatorial Guinea in the earlier kick-off.

It was a frustrating night for the West Africans who saw the post and crossbar deny them no less than three occasions.

But superb saves from Rwanda goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye also added to their misery.

The home-based Eagles were the better side, dominating possession in both halves but failed to do the most important thing – goal scoring.

With veteran Rabiu Ali leading Nigeria’s onslaughts, youngster Sunday Faleye was unlucky to see his header from Osas Okoro’s assist bounce off the crossbar in the opening minutes with Ndayishimiye completely beaten.

In the 38 minute, Ali wasted a golden opportunity to send Nigeria into the lead, volleying wide after the Rwandan goalkeeper had spilled a cross onto his path.

The Amavubi will survive yet another scare from the Super Eagles four minutes before the interval, after a long drive from Ali came off the post with Ndayishimiye beaten yet again.

The second half resumed on the same tempo with Rwanda coming into the picture following the introduction of nimble footed AS Kigali midfielder Savio Nshuti.

In the 78 minute, the upright came to the rescue of Amavubi for the third time after substitute Ibrahim Mustapha’s header from an Ali corner kick hit the post to the relief of Rwanda.

Nigeria next face Libya on Thursday whilst Rwanda battle Equatorial Guinea.

The championship which began on Saturday is expected to end on Feb. 4.
