Wema Bank sacks over 1,000 staff

Reports reaching TNG has it that Wema Bank Plc on Friday laid off over 1,000 staff on its pay roll.

According to an insider source, those affected spread across the bank’s branches all over the country.

The source further revealed that the bank was found of retrenching staff yearly without following due process.

While it is true that the retrenchment exercise is carried out yearly by the bank to checkmate the number of unproductive staff to the barest minimum, however, we also have cases of people that are due for promotion that were unjustly relieved of their jobs,” the source said.

A top official of the bank who spoke under condition of anonymity to TNG said retrenchment within the bank is an exercise carried out regularly to ‘weed out’ those who are either unproductive or over stayed their welcome in the bank.

Its not strange. Banks generally retrench staff regularly to check dormancy and bring new bloods on board. I don’t know why it is becoming news now that Wema is doing it. If you are given a target and you don’t meet it, the bank will show you the way out. Its not an industry for lazy people. If you check your facts well without a biased mind, you will see that the affected staff have been queried repeatedly for their lateness to meet up with targets or not meeting it at all. Sometimes it does not even have anything to do with targets but disregard for basic banking and corporate principles. If every other person do not meet up with their targets or are generally lackadaisical to work, how does the bank pay salaries and maintain its long corporate existence?,” he queried.

Asked if the bank followed due process in the retrenchment process, he said: “See the bank is a corporate entity. We follow due process in all we do and won’t embark on anything that can tarnish our image. We couldn’t have laid off people without following the outlined process,” he said.

However, when TNG on Sunday night reached out to one of the affected staff, she declined to comment on accounts that she was still shocked to believe what was happening.

Please I can’t say anything for now. I’m not even sure if this is real or fake. It doesn’t make sense to me. The bank can’t just end my years of diligence, professionalism and loyalty like that without prior warning or signal. I think there is a mix up somewhere. When and if I successfully process this and can come to terms with reality, I’ll get back to you, she said sounding teary on phone.

Efforts by TNG to get comments/reactions from the Head, Brand and Marketing Communications of the bank was unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.

His words, “I don’t understand what you mean…as I speak to you, the CBN governor [Emefiele] is in his office performing his duties”

  • Court sacks lawmaker over certification forgery, orders his arrest

A Referral High Court sitting in Jos, on Tuesday sacked a Plateau Lawmaker, Mr Ibrahim Baba-Hassan over certificate forgery.

Delivering judgment in a case filed by another lawmaker, Abdu Sale, Justice Musa Kurya held that Baba-Hassan was not in the first qualified to contest the 2015 APC House Assemby primaries Jos North-North constituency of Plateau.

Saleh had in his suit filed through his Counsel, Mr David Ibeawuchi, told court that the lawmaker’s Diploma certificate in Business Administration allegedly obtained from University of Jos, which was presented to INEC for the 2015 election, was forged.

Mr Monday DamJan, Registrar, University of Jos, testified against the lawmaker, who was defended by Mr Solomon Umoh (SAN).

But Kurya in his judgment, found the evidence of the Registrar of the University to be uncontroverted, direct and positive and described him as “a witness of truth.’

The Judge said that he also found that Diploma certificate paraded by Baba-Hassan which he presented to the INEC in 2011 and 2015 was forged which was why he (lawmaker) conspicuously expunged it from the 2019 form he submitted to INEC.

“Several controvervies in the evidence of Hon. Ibrahim Baba- Hassan especially the purported Bachelor of Management Science degree with Second Class Lower division he presented through his counsel, Mr. Solomon Umoh (SAN) but in the semblance of the University Convocation booklet which he tendered it was indicated as Third Class.

“Although this did not relate to the claim of the plaintiff, which bothered on forgery of Diploma Certificate, Ibrahim Baba-Hassan did not state which one of the conflicting B. Sc degree the court is to believe, ” the Judge stated.

The Judge also condemned the report of the Police Investigation tendered and descibed it as “very wrong” and “unreliable evidence” to counter the oral testimony of the Registrar.

According to him, “you cannot put something on nothing and expect it to stand. It will fall.”

The Judge also described the conduct of Baba-Hassan as unbecoming of a lawmaker and that he was not a witness of truth.

He however ordered the DSS, ICPC and law enforcement agencies to take note of his judgment which found thelawmaker guilty of forgery and to act appropriately.

Kurya granted all the reliefs sought by Saleh and made a consequential order directing Baba-Hassan to return all the salaries, entitlements and emoluments received by him and Ordered that 2 million naira be paid as costs to the plaintiff.

Part of the reliefs which the plaintiff sought was an Order disqualiying Baba-Hassan as the candidate of the APC, and an Order directing the INEC to recognize forthwith the name of the Plaintiff as the legitimate candidate of the APC for the 2015 elections into the State House of Assembly for Jos North-North constituency in Plateau State.

He futher disqualified Baba-Hassan as the candidate of the APC, and an Ordered INEC to recognize forthwith the name of Saleh as the legitimate candidate of the APC for the 2015 elections into the State House of Assembly for Jos North-North constituency in Plateau.

  • Alleged certificate scam: Buhari’s special adviser reacts to calls for his sack

The Chairman, Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, has reacted to a call for his dismissal by the House of Representatives.

Obla has been under attack over an alleged forged WAEC certificate ever since he commenced investigations into the activities and finances of some senators and Reps members.

In a statement issued on Friday, Obla described the calls for his sack as ‘Hogwash and Balderdash” adding that it was a ‘Hatchet Job by Merchants of Corruption’.

The Statement read; “The call by the House of Representatives on Mr President to sack me for alleged certificate forgery is hogwash, balderdash and absolute rubbish!

It is a hatchet job by agents and merchants of corruption and graft that have looted our country for the past 19 years to intimidate , hound and harass me.They are agents of looters that I have investigated. Is the house of representatives the police?”

He addressed the certificate issue, stating that he graduated from university over 30 years ago.

“I left university 30 years ago. I graduated and went to law school. I left Law School in 1990 and was called to Bar in June 1991.

The university screened me and awarded me a degree after deeming me worthy and after fulfilling the entry requirements.

I wrote JAMB and scored excellent grades in all the subjects I wrote. It is a blackmail contrived by looters and their agents using the House of Representatives.”

The anti-corruption czar has also filed a lawsuit against the House of Representatives over the matter.

“I have even filed a suit in Court challenging the power of the house of representatives to conduct such an investigation. It is a hatchet job with a premeditated mission. The so called report is illegal and unconstitutional.

Let me inform Nigerians how this people work. All the members of the House of Representatives Committee that purportedly investigated me were cohorts of some members of the National Assembly I was investigating.

One of them openly boasted that for daring to investigating some powerful people in the National Assembly I will be dealt with.

It is a reaction to my press conference early this week where I informed Nigerians that my Panel has forwarded the names of those under it investigation to the Nigeria Immigration Service to implement the travel ban stipulated by the Executive Order No 6 of 2018 for those under trial and investigation for corruption and abuse of office.

I must be a genius to pass through University and Law School, practice law for more than two decades without a “ school certificate”.

The whole issue is really laughable but it is sad the extent to which corruption can fight back.

  • Alleged certificate scam: Reps recommend sacking of Buhari’s special adviser

The House of Representatives has called for the sacking of Chief Okoi Obono-Obla as the Special Adviser on Prosecutions and Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel.

While asking the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to investigate and prosecute Obono-Obla, the lower chamber of the National Assembly urged the schools the presidential aide claimed to have attended to withdraw his certificates.

The lawmakers alleged that Obono-Obla’s Law degree was allegedly “obtained fraudulently and should be withdrawn by the University of Jos.”

These were part of the recommendations in a report by the Houses’ Ad Hoc Committee on ‘The Need to Investigate the Legality and Modus Operandi of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel.’

The report was unanimously adopted at the plenary on Thursday.

The recommendations as approved were that “the President should be urged to dissolve the panel in view of the arbitrary use of powers and abuse of office by the chairman (Obono-Obla).”

Other recommendations included, “That the Code of Conduct Bureau should be utilised to perform the functions that the panel sought to perform in the current anti-corruption drive.

That the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission should investigate the allegations of corruption contained in the Audit Report of the Auditor-General of the Federation on the financial transactions of the panel and prosecute the culprits.

The House further approved that, “The Law degree of Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, having been obtained fraudulently, should be withdrawn by the University of Jos

That the Council of Legal Education should withdraw the Law School Certificate awarded to Ofem Okoi Ofem, now known as Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, as it was based on the degree which he obtained from University of Jos through fraud.”

The lawmakers urged the Nigerian Bar Association to drag the presidential aide before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee of the National Judicial Council, adding that the “President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should discharge Chief Okoi Obono-Obla of his responsibility as Special Adviser and Chairman of the SPIP.”

They also resolved that, “Chief Okoi Obono-Obla should be investigated by the Inspector-General of Police and prosecuted for forgery and misrepresentation.”

The House further urged the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen; Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN); NBA President, Mr Paul Usoro (SAN); Director General of the Nigerian Law School and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, to investigate Obono-Obla and consider his prosecution.

The committee had earlier in March written to Obono-Obla to demand 12 sets of documents about the presidential panel.

The committee had in the letter dated March 28, 2018, said the details demanded were needed for the House’s investigation into “the modus operandi and legality” of the presidential panel.

As at the time of filing this report, the embattled chairman was yet to issue any official statement to the reps decision.

  • Court sacks APC chairman

    Court sacks APC chairman

A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra on Thursday nullified the election of Mr Emeka Ibe as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Chief Uzochukwu Onyekwere, a member of the APC in Anambra and chairmanship aspirant had gone to court to contest the May 19 state elective congress that brought in Ibe, over unlawful exclusion.

Defendants in the suit were Okey Ezea, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, Chairman of the APC Congress Committee in Anambra, Ibe, the acclaimed winner and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Onyekwere prayed the court that he was a bona-fide member of APC and was entitled to aspire for the office the party’s chairman in Anambra.

He sought declaration that the exercise was not conducted in accordance with the provisions of Section 223 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended and Article 20 of the APC constitution 2017 as amended.

He said the intendment of those provisions was that all elections would be through democratic voting and that the exercise fell short of it.

Ibeh sought a declaration that he would not be punished after seeking justice through the court and that the May 19, 2018 Anambra APC congress be set aside.

In his over two hours ruling, Justice Bature Gafai dismissed the counter affidavits of defendants which contended that the court did not have jurisdiction over the matter as it was an internal party affair.

Gafai said the plaintiff being a bona-fide of the party and having paid the mandatory nomination fee had the right to fair contest.

He nullified the election into the APC chairmanship position and ordered a re-run which INEC should supervise.

The judge who did not grant the damage of N100 million sought by the plaintiff however, did not give that for the repeat of the election.

But in a swift reaction, Chief Tagbo Ike, counsel to the petitioner applauded the court for the judgment and speedy dispensation of justice.

Ike, who described the election as a `sham’ said it was sad that a few people sat and produced their stooges as consensus and harmonised candidates and forced them on the people.

Ike said he would convey judgment to the party hierarchy for appropriate action.

The plaintiff, Onyekwere also lauded the court adding that he had been vindicated.

Onyekwere said he would go back and prepare for a congress election that would reflect the minds of the generality of party faithful.

I thank God, if you must go to equity you have to go with clean hands, I have maintained that there was no congress in Anambra and the court has confirmed it.

I will go and prepare, if I win, I win and if I lose I will be happy that justice has been served,” he said.

  • NFF crisis: Clark calls for Sports Minister’s sack over incompetence

Edwin Clark has called for sack of the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mr Solomon Dalung, for allegedly discrediting Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for recognising Amaju-Pinnick-led Board of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The elder statesman Clark, who made the call in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said reports of “disloyalty and parochial utterances’’ credited to Dalung in various media reports were embarrassing.

According to Clark, for the minister to discredit the very patriotic and timely intervention of Osinbajo as Acting President, to recognise the Amaju Pinnick-led Board of the NFF is unacceptable.

The elder statesman further said there was no sense in the minister of sports discrediting a laudable action that saved Nigeria from ban by the world football governing body FIFA.

“This was an action taken by the Acting President at a very critical stage of our football history to avert FIFA’s ban on Nigeria.

“Osibanjo restored to the global platform of honour, an action commended by all and sundry, locally and internationally.

“If this action was not taken by the Acting President at the time he did, it will have been a disgrace and a setback for Nigerian football.

“But here is Mr Dalung, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, who unfortunately, thinks and behaves differently.’’

Clark said the action of the vice president called for commendation and not condemnation.

“Instead of rejoicing and towing the line of the government under which he is serving, he has unfortunately showed total disrespect and disloyalty for the Acting President and the government in his open show of ignorance and incompetence.’’

Clark quoted Dalung as saying, “as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria who took oath of office to defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will prefer to stand with the Rule of Law, instead of the opinion of men.

“We are a constitutional democracy and the doctrine of separation of powers is the foundation of democratic experience.

“Therefore, the Rule of Law is the only mechanism that guarantees liberty and freedom of citizens.

“This administration is elected on the change mantra, meaning that impunity has no accommodation anywhere.

“So, Nigerians must learn to believe and practice the doctrine of the Rule of Law. I believe we shall overcome this if we remain within the confines and dictates of the laws of our country.’’

Clark noted that the decision taken by Osibanjo was well informed, adding that, he is a Prof. of Law, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice of Lagos State.

He stressed that Osibanjo had for decades, taken the oath of Office to defend the same Constitution and the Rule of Law.

“I also swore to the same oath when I qualified as a lawyer 53 years ago. What is the minister talking about defending the constitution and obeying the rule of law?

“After reading what the Honourable Minister says, one is left to wonder in whose interest he is serving, because it is obviously not in the interest of government and the Nigerian people.

“He never showed any concern whether Nigeria was banned by FIFA or not, except his own interest.

“For instance, the minister knows that Mr Chris Giwa had been banned for five years by FIFA, yet, he put him on the list of a 15-man delegation to FIFA in Switzerland.

“Another clear case is when Mr President directed the Department of State Services (DSS), to flush out Mr Chris Giwa and his subordinates from the Glass House, Dalung was not only believed to have encouraged Giwa’s return.

“He is reported to have facilitated the resurrection of the leadership feud within the NFF, which undermines the great successes of the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF on the nation’s towering football engagements,’’ he said.

According to Clark, in the overall interest of the future of football, and for Nigeria to maintain its position as the largest country in Africa, the Ministry of Sports is not the place for the likes of Mr Dalung.

He noted that given Nigeria’s present status, disloyalty, indiscipline, arrogance and mediocrity should not be condoned in any area of public service.

“The legal profession which I have cherished and belong to investigate all my adult life cannot be ridiculed by certain persons who are bereft of character and honour required of public officers.

“One should expect that the minister should strive to see how permanent peace will be restored to Nigerian Football administration, particularly now that he has set up a reconciliation committee.

“He should not be personifying the disagreement within the NFF, but seek out of court settlement in Jos High Court, where the Supreme Court referred the matter to.

“The Supreme Court did not give any definite judgment in favour of anybody and therefore, it was very improper of the minister to drag in the Supreme Court in his offensive statement.

“It must be emphasised that, the unity of Nigeria is very paramount, and football is one of the contributory factors to this unity,’’ he said.

Clark said “as an elder statesman of 91, an incurable football enthusiast, and having remained so since my youth, and my days as a student in England, I was a strong supporter of Manchester United, until I returned to Nigeria in 1965.

“I continued to show my interest in football and other sporting activities from primary to secondary school levels when I was appointed Commissioner for Education in the old Midwest State.

“Then, football and other sporting activities were domiciled in the Youth Directorate which was directly under my supervision as Commissioner for Education.

“It was our policy then to develop football and other sporting activities and our footballers and athletes excelled in all competitions.

“In order to develop sporting activities, therefore, the School of Physical Education was established at Afuze, now Michael Imoudu College of Physical Education, Afuze in the then Owan Division, now Owan Local Government Area of Edo.

“This is what I expected a Sports Minister who knows his onions to concentrate on.

  • NASS siege: Acting DG takes over DSS after Daura’s sack

Sequel to the sack of the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, an acting Director-General has been inaugurated for the service.

He is Matthew Benabafa Seiyefa, who until his appointment was the director in charge of the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), an institution established in 2005 as the cardinal training institution for the DSS.

Seiyefa is the most senior official at the SSS after Lawal Daura who was sacked on Tuesday on the orders of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

The acting DG, an indigene of Bayelsa State, was director of operations between 2007 and 2010 when Afakriya Gadzama ran the agency.

Insiders at the SSS said he is close to retirement, and was indeed billed to proceed on terminal leave later this month.

Daura, who was appointed to the post by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, was axed over the invasion of the National Assembly Tuesday morning by masked officials of the SSS, an incident the presidency said was not authorised.

Sources said the handing over to Seiyefa was being conducted at the Yellow House headquarters of the agency by the agency’s director of administration and logistics as Daura was not available at the ceremony.

The sacked DG’s official convoy returned without him from the Presidential Villa to the Yellow House hours after Mr Daura was fired.

It is not immediately clear whether and where he is being held. Insiders at the DSS said he was placed under house arrest at the presidential villa. But that could not be immediately verified.

Multiple sources at the agency on Tuesday expressed relief over the sudden end to the Katsina State-born Daura’s three years leadership of the DSS which they said was marked by high-handedness and autocracy.

He was said to have denied five senior officials their official quarters in Abuja, instead allocating the facilities to his relations who are not officials of the agency.

Daura was also said to have cancelled the regular meeting of the DG with state directors, the traditional channel for briefing his office on security issues around the country and the forum for top level evaluation of operations.

He also closed the regular channel of communication with the public as he refused to appoint a spokesperson for the agency throughout his tenure.

Osinbajo had earlier met with Mr. Seiyefa at the presidential villa shortly after sacking Daura, and directing him to hand over to the most senior official in the service.

Seiyefa arrived the presidential villa in an official SUV at about 4 p.m., clutching a file.

He was received at the entrance of the Villa by the aide de camp to the acting president. He later left for the DSS headquarters after the meeting to take charge of the security agency.
