NUBIFIE pickets Polaris Bank over members’ sack

The National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions  (NUBIFIE) on Tuesday picketed the headquarters of Polaris Bank, Victoria Island, over an alleged violation of workers’ rights.

The  Secretary-General,  Mr Mohammed Sheikh, accused the bank management of sacking workers without following due process required by labour law.

“We are here today to express our grievance against the new management of Polaris Bank, this grievance of ours is bordering on the violation of workers’ rights.

“The new management came on board barely six months ago and instead of settling down to look at how to move the bank forward, in their thinking, moving the bank forward, or growing it, is by sacking workers.

“So the first agenda, the management decided was to start laying off people; but it is not the laying off of people in itself that is the issue.

“The issue is the fact that it is carrying out those exercises in gross violation of the right of workers to a collectively bargained exit package,“ he said.

Sheikh said that about 40 staff members, including cleaners and security men were laid off.

According to him, many of the workers who have put in between five years and 20 years of service with the bank are being give one month in lieu of notice as an exit package.

“So, we frown at that because we are all bound by the laws that are there; we are here to protest against the inhuman treatment that this new management meted out to workers via the unilateral sacking of workers who have dedicated their lives, and put in their services.

“We wrote to them, even before the sacking because we got the information; we, however, told them to be mindful of due process if they are planning to sack.

“However,  there was no response, and acknowledgement,“ he said.

Sheikh said that the picketing was just a warning strike to the management for it to follow due process.

He said, however, if management refused to comply, the union would continue to picket the office together with the national body of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

“NLC is aware of what is going on; members will be joining us if there is no headway; our civil society coalition partners are also aware, they are waiting in the wings to join us.

“The bank management has violated workers’ rights and we are here to protest that violation; and until they rectify it, we are going to continue picketing them,“ he said.

In its response,  the management handed a letter to Sheikh,  signalling readiness to dialogue to resolve the issues raised.

The letter titled, “Re: Unilateral  Disengagement of Workers” was signed by the bank’s Talent and Culture officer, Mr Olarenwaju Oyekunle, and General Counsel, Mr Segun Tawoju.

The letter read: “Given the cordial relationship that had existed between the Bank and the union over years, we are of the opinion that any concern from either party can be resolved through round table.

“In view of the above, we request for a meeting between the management team of the bank and a delegation of NUBIFIE on June 7, 2023, by 10.00 a.m. at our office to discuss outstanding issues with the view to having a resolution while requesting you recall your members from our business locations.”

Maldini deserved AC Milan sacking – Collovati

Inter Milan legend Fulvio Collovati explains why Paolo Maldini deserved his sacking at AC Milan.

Maldini and fellow football director Ricky Massara were sacked by Milan owner Gerry Cardinale in a Monday meeting.

He told Rai Sport: “The news may be surprising, but it doesn’t surprise me.

“Maldini was the author together with Massara of a bankruptcy market, so he pays for this flop. This new AC Milan club may not want to make the leap and spend, but this can be understood because it is in the hands of a fund that calculates how much money comes out and how this money is spent.

“Tell me which player was signed by Milan last year who performed according to expectations… They probably should have given Maldini another year, but it’s not surprising about this divorce in my opinion.”

  • Why Steven Gerrard had to be sacked – Aston Villa chief

Why Steven Gerrard had to be sacked – Aston Villa chief

Aston Villa chief Christian Purslow says sacking Steven Gerrard was a difficult call.

Gerrard was axed and replaced by Unai Emery before Christmas.

“I supported Liverpool,” Purslow told Sky Sports. “I was a third generation – my grandparents and my father were from Liverpool and Liverpool fans. And so, like many, many football fans in the country, one grows up as a kid, following in your dad’s footsteps.

“Yes, it was [a difficult decision]. It was very tough. He’s a very good person I’ve known for a long time. When I was at Liverpool, he was the captain of the club. But, my priority is Aston Villa, and doing the right thing for our club, and it hadn’t worked out.

“Steven would be the first to admit that. You have to do the right thing. The board thought about things. I think we let things ride for a while and then made that tough decision and moved on.”

  • Sad Ronaldo likely to be sacked at Man Utd – Neville

Sad Ronaldo likely to be sacked at Man Utd – Neville

Manchester United legend Gary Neville is sorry seeing the club moving to sack Cristiano Ronaldo.

United’s lawyers are confident they have grounds to sack Ronaldo after he breached the terms of his contract by spurting out allegations against the club, the Glazers, manager Erik ten Hag and his teammates.

Ronaldo accused Ten Hag and United executives of trying to force him out of the club and said they had ‘betrayed him’. The 37-year-old also insists he had no respect for the Dutch manager before launching an attack on Ralf Rangnick.

As a result, the Glazers, chief executive Richard Arnold, football director John Murtough and Ten Hag have decided that it is time for Ronaldo to leave the club.

Neville posted to social media: “Sad that it’s come to a point where arguably United’s greatest ever talent is likely to be sacked. It didn’t need to be like this. A mature conversation a few weeks ago between both parties could have secured a smooth exit.”

  • Man Utd explore sacking Ronaldo without payout

Man Utd explore sacking Ronaldo without payout

Manchester United are making legal moves to sack Cristiano Ronaldo without compensation for this week’s interview with Piers Morgan.

United have begun the legal process of effectively sacking Ronaldo by tearing up his £500,000-a-week contract without paying the Portugal star a penny of the £16million he would have earned until it expired in June, says the Daily Mail.

United’s lawyers are satisfied Ronaldo has breached the terms of his contract with his explosive allegations against the club, the Glazers, manager Erik ten Hag and his teammates.

The interview aired in two parts on Wednesday and Thursday following a slew of teaser clips since the weekend.

United said earlier in the week that they would consider their response once the full facts were established, and issued a statement on Friday.

It read: “Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion.”

United felt they had to offer some response in the face of Ronaldo’s claims but would not comment on what the process will involve.
