Ex-Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr breaks silence days after sack

Gernot Rohr has criticised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for sacking him as the Super Eagles coach, maintaining that the team’s performance under him was not below expectations.

The German, who is Nigeria’s longest-serving coach, was fired earlier in the week following some unconvincing results with the 1994 African champions.

But the coach has faulted the move, insisting that he met all targets set by the NFF upon his appointment in 2016.

“It was not necessary to do this so close to AFCON,” he told ESPN, saying the team had chances to score more goals in their last two matches – against Sierra Leone and Cape Verde but were unlucky.

“After what the team did, and after what the team had achieved with [reaching] the targets… but it happened, and we are realistic people.”

According to him, the Super Eagles had become better since he took charge, citing the team’s improved FIFA ranking.

Rohr said that he has built a reliable team since 2016 and tipped them for glory in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

“Everybody knows that we are close to the AFCON, and I think this team should win it because this team is built to win matches, important matches, decisive matches,” he added.

Beyond his sacking and the team’s performance, Rohr also refuted claims by the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, that he had lost the dressing room.

He claimed that the football body had been planning to sack him over a year ago. This, he said, was the reason they brought in Austin Eguavoen to become a part of his crew.

“The dressing room was 100% behind me,” Rohr noted and hoped that “it will also be 100% behind the new coach [Eguavoen]”.

Tuchel warned he isn’t beyond Chelsea sack

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair believes Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel isn’t beyond the sack.

Chelsea are currently struggling to shake a current form slump.

“He does not get the best out of Lukaku right now, but in general he has organised the team Frank Lampard built. He has made them hard to beat and they have had a time where they have been incredible,” Sinclair told Talksport.

“But they are just people, there is always a little dip. He (Tuchel) wants to see improvement in the simple things and mentality of the players, and I’m sure they will get over it.

“Anyway, you know what Chelsea is like. Their football model is that if the coach does not succeed, kick him and start again.

“I think he will get a little more time, but if it continues to go hard in the Premier League, I think the questions will come and that it will not take long before Chelsea act.”

Frank Lampard reveals day he feared Chelsea sack

Frank Lampard has revealed when he knew he was in trouble as Chelsea manager.

The Blues legend was fired in January 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Champions League last season.

And Lampard says he started to feel concerned after losing 3-1 to Arsenal on Boxing Day.

“It was a really good feeling. Then come the end of December we lose some games and that can change pretty quick,” Lampard said on Gary Neville’s The Overlap.

“We went to Arsenal on Boxing Day and lost and played poorly. There hadn’t been that many games in my time at Chelsea where you could say we were off it today. Miles off it.

“When we went to Arsenal and got beaten pretty well, I knew that good feeling from before had gone. I could see it in the performance. Then we had (Manchester) City the next game.

“At Chelsea, it is understandable, I’m not crying my eyes out, but you lose two games on the bounce like that people start talking about it straight away. I could sense the feeling of that.

“I think we lost three games in seven and at the end of January I left.”

Lampard added: “I could feel it. I was sort of being told some things that it might happen. Rumours.

“Chelsea is such a big club and it has had huge success with it – it changes managers so it doesn’t take long for people to jump onto that ship. It would have been stupid of me to just listen to that, but I’m not silly. You listen to those things and just keep working.

“The next morning (after losing to Luton Town) I got a message from Bruce Buck the chairman of the club saying ‘Can you move training and come and meet us in the boardroom?’

“Once the club makes that decision there is no nice way. I knew straight away.

“There is no nice way to do it. There may be different ways and etiquette to doing it, but at the end of the day the result is the same.

“When I met Bruce and Marina it was very cordial. I knew what was coming. Not at the time, but you are thankful for the period, you understand what it is. They are going to move on and there is nothing you can do there.

“When you take the job you understand that call may come. At Chelsea, it probably will come unless you win back-to-back titles all the time and that was never going to happen.”

Ronald Koeman didn’t deserve Barca sack – Jordi Alba

Barcelona fullback Jordi Alba insists former coach Ronald Koeman didn’t deserve to be sacked.

Despite being dismissed and replaced by Xavi Hernandez, leaving the Blaugrana in a troubled position domestically and in the Champions League, Alba didn’t want to have a bad word said about his former coach.

“No,” Alba said, asked if he thought the change to Xavi should have been made earlier. “I think Koeman did a very good job.

“We won the Copa Del Rey when nobody expected us to, and every coach has their own style. I’m grateful to Koeman for what he did with me and the whole team.”

Despite his affection for Koeman, Alba did express his excitement with Xavi’s arrival on the bench.

“Now we have a new coach because the president decided to have one and I’m happy that Xavi is here,” Alba added. “He had to come here, because he knows the club.

“I’m very happy with his arrival and I’m sure he’ll help us a lot.”

Speaking more about Xavi, Alba admitted that he has limited knowledge of the former midfielder as a coach.

“I’ve only known him [as a coach] for a week,” Alba said. “He was always very intensely into football as a player, and now as a coach.

“He has emphasised the importance of talking to everyone, especially those who don’t play.

“That’s a positive for the whole team to buy into and to get back to being ourselves. We did well against Espanyol, now we have to improve a lot. I think he has good ideas.”

  • Solskjaer sacking well deserved – Ex-Man Utd winger

Solskjaer sacking well deserved – Ex-Man Utd winger

Manchester United Double winner Andrei Kanchelskis says former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserved Sunday’s sacking.

Kanchelskis says defeat at Watford had to be the final straw.

He told Sport-Express: “Well-deserved dismissal. I’ve been following him for the last three years, losing the most important games. The team seems to be doing well, but the most important matches, for example, the FA Cup semi-finals or the Europa League semi-finals, have been lost.

“Fans of Manchester United are demanding, want and demand only victories and trophies. It has already boiled over: Watford to lose 1:4 – this has never happened before!”

On Zinedine Zidane as a replacement, Kanchelskis added: “Zidane worked in a big club, in Real Madrid, he has experience. But it seems to me that he wants a little more rest from club football.

“Let’s see if they make him an offer that he cannot refuse, he will probably take this decision. But I think, here, rather, someone from the Italian specialists, for example (Antonio) Conte, would be useful. But he is already busy, unfortunately.”

Look at Ferguson before sacking Solskjaer – Ranieri tells Man Utd

Watford manager Claudio Ranieri says Manchester United should stand by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ranieri has called for United to give time to Solskjaer, believing he is the right man to turn things around at Old Trafford.

The Italian pointed out how Sir Alex was appointed by the club in 1986, but he did not win his first trophy until 1990.

“I think every manager has his philosophy,” said Ranieri. “But I remember also when Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in Manchester, three years? How long was it for him [to win a trophy]?

“Give time to Solskjaer. I am confident with him, he just has to continue this job.

“But look, Solskjaer is doing very well; of course, Manchester United want to win every time. And they want to come back to the Sir Alex Ferguson era, that’s normal.

“But the pressure is a positive pressure, for him and for everyone working in Manchester.”

  • We’re not aware of Gernot Rohr’s sack – NFF

We’re not aware of Gernot Rohr’s sack – NFF

Contrary to reports circulating on social media on Thursday that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sacked Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, the federation’s Assistant Director, Media, Ademola Olajire, has denied knowledge of the development.

Olajire insisted that it’s only after a board meeting of the NFF and a signed statement released that Rohr’s sack could be authenticated.

“I’m not aware of Rohr’s sack because there are procedures for doing things at the federation.

“Before such a decision could be taken, there will be a meeting of the NFF board and a release issued to the public.

“As for now, I’m not aware of the sack. The online platform you claimed reported the story cannot announce his sack without confirmation from the NFF,” Olajire told Sportingsun.

Reports had emerged online on Thursday morning that the NFF sacked Rohr following Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.

Rohr was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in August 2016.

The German tactician led the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

His conservative approach and Super Eagles’ uninspiring performances have been heavily criticised by the media and supporters.

The Portuguese was sacked after just 17 games in charge at Tottenham.

The 47-year-old former Wolves manager has now taken to social media to speak out for the first time since his departure last week. He posted on Instagram: “Wow, the last few weeks have been hectic to say the least.

“This is football the most ruthless sport in the game, only a couple of weeks back I was crowned Manager of the Month and fast forward to the present and it’s been some days since my dismissal at Spurs.

“This is life, I move on forward now looking for my next challenge and finally I want to thank the fans of Spurs, when I joined this great club I envisaged a vision to bring trophies but all didn’t go to plan.

“That’s all really we live and learn, look forward to keeping all of you posted and thank you once again for your constant support.”

Koeman, 58, was approached by AD for a reaction to his firing, but he was reluctant to speak.

  • [TNG EXCLUSIVE] Ologbotsere title: He has no power to sack me, I call him Tsola not Olu of Warri – Chief Ayiri speaks

[TNG EXCLUSIVE] Ologbotsere title: He has no power to sack me, I call him Tsola not Olu of Warri – Chief Ayiri speaks

Few hours after he was official stripped of the Ologbotsere title by the Olu of Warri, Tsola Emiko, the Ogiame Atuwashe III, embattled Chief Ayiri Emami has reacted.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the Olu Of Warri on Tuesday (today) 5th day of October 2021 derobed Ayiri who had been suspended as the Ologbotsere of the Itsekiri people.

The Ologbotsere family was also formally invited and instructed never to address Ayiri as Ologbotsere anymore.

Meanwhile, Pa. Higson Ajofotan Oporokun the Olori-Ebi of the Ologbotsere family has been given the powers to conduct all activities as it relates to the Ologbotsere family henceforth.

However, in a swift response to the development, Chief Ayiri in an exclusive interview with TNG said the Olu does not have the power to dethrone him as he (Ayiri) and the authorities do not recognise him.

“My family and I are meeting on Thursday to discuss the new development. I stand firmly that he (Olu of Warri) is not recognised. The Ologbotsere title in question did not make me. I have achieved all that I am today before becoming the Olotgbotsere some three years ago. In fact the title is not making me focus on things I should. So it’s not about the title but that due process must be followed in installing a new Olu which was not in this case,” Chief Ayiri said.

TNG reports the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III was crowned On August 21 as the 21st Olu at Ode-Itsekiri, his ancestral home in Warri, Delta state.

The ousted Ologbotsere mounted stiff opposition to the emergence of the new Olu, insisting that he was not qualified to ascend the throne of his fathers due to his maternal heritage.
