Awosika opens up on sack as First Bank chair

Former chairman of First Bank Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, has maintained the decision to sack reinstated Managing Director of the bank, Adesola Adeduntan, was taken in the best interest of the institution.

Awosika said she maintained consistency in her contributions to development of the bank in over five years as chairman.

The sacked former chairman said she joined the bank’s board in October 2010 after which she was appointed to chair the board of FBN Life Insurance Limited.

TheNewsGuru recalls that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wielded the big stick on Awosika and Chairman of FBN Holdings, Mr. Oba Otudeko on Thursday.

The CBN named Mr. Remi Babalola as replacement for Otudeko (FBN Holdings Chairman) and Tunde Hassan-Odukale as Mrs. Awosika’s replacement FBN (Chairman).

Awosika, in a statement shared on her verified Instagram page, titled “My FBN Group Journey”, stated the decision to end the tenure of Adesola Adeduntan as the bank’s Managing Director was taken in the bank’s best interests.

In her words:: “In October 2010, I was appointed to join the board of First bank of Nigeria.

“A few months later, I was appointed to chair the board of its startup FBN Life Insurance Limited (a joint venture with Sanlam of South Africa). As its pioneer chairman, I had the privilege of working with a strong management team led by Val Ojumah.

“Together with the rest of our team we built a company that became profitable in twenty four months and continues to be so.

“In early 2013, I was moved from FBN Life Insurance Ltd to assume the chairmanship of FBN Capital working with a brilliant team led by Kayode Akinkugbe as the Managing Director.

“We worked hard to build the institution, bought Kakawa Discount House which I was again asked by the Group to Chair.

“We eventually merged the companies to create the FBN quest Merchant Bank Group, which I chaired until my appointment as chairman of First Bank of Nigeria on January 1st 2016.

“For over five years, I have worked with a dedicated team of board and management, with the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria to rebuild and restructure the institution for its future.

“This included cleaning up non-performing loans, establishing good operational governance systems and processes, building controls and an effective and robust risk management system.

“I am confident we have brought First Bank of Nigeria to a place where it is more than able to deliver utmost value to its stakeholders and the nation at large.

“As a board, we acted in what we clearly believed to be in the best interest of the bank and we had great plans and aspirations for where the bank could go to in its future, building on all the work that has already been done in the last five plus years.

“Without a shadow of doubt, I will unequivocally state that I have always acted in honor and integrity with the utmost interest of the institution, all our stakeholders and the nation.”

  • BREAKING: Presidency breaks silence on massive calls for Pantami’s sack over alleged links with terrorist groups

BREAKING: Presidency breaks silence on massive calls for Pantami’s sack over alleged links with terrorist groups

The Presidency on Thursday addressed for the first time issues concerning the embattled Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the minister has been in the eye of the storm over his past comments in support of terrorist groups like Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

In a statement on Thursday, the Presidency said Pantami’s ordeal in the hands of those calling for his sack was not about his past utterances but about his current job as a minister.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the Presidency’s position know in a statement titled ‘Statement by the Presidency on recent campaign against the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.”

The Presidency aligned itself with the submission of the embattled minister that he was young when he made those statements and that his position had since changed.

It said the minister would never repeat such statements since he had condemned them and apologised.

The statement read, “Today, there is an unfortunate fashion in public discourse that makes leaders in politics, religion, and civil society liable in the present for every statement they have ever made in the past – no matter how long ago, and even after they have later rejected them.

“This insidious phenomenon seeks to cancel the careers of others on the basis of a thing they have said, regardless of when they said it.

“The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami is, currently, subject to a ‘cancel campaign’ instigated by those who seek his removal.

“They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to ‘cancel’ him. But they will profit should he be stopped from making decisions that improve the lives of everyday Nigerians.

“The Minister has, rightly, apologised for what he said in the early 2000s. The views were absolutely unacceptable then, and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them – for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong.

“In the 2000s, the Minister was a man in his twenties; next year he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions – often rightly – change.

“But all discerning Nigerians know this manufactured dispute is nothing to do with the Minister’s prior words, but solely concern his actions in the present.

“The administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services.”

He continued, “In two short years, Minister Pantami has driven the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP to more than 18 percent, making it one of the top two playing a critical role in the emergence of the economy from the COVID 19-induced recession.

“In putting people first, the minister and this administration have made enemies. There are those in the opposition who see success and want it halted by any means. And there is now well-reported information that alleges newspaper editors rebuffed an attempt to financially induce them to run a smear campaign against the minister by some ICT companies, many of which do indeed stand to lose financially through lower prices and greater consumer protections.

“The government is now investigating the veracity behind these claims of attempted inducement, and – should they be found to hold credence – police and judicial action must be expected.”

JUST IN: Northern youths demand immediate sack of CCT chair over ‘Biafran Boys’ Comment

Northern Youths Council of Nigeria, (NYCN), has called on the President Mohammadu Buhari to sack the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar over it termed “alleged abuse of power.”

Few days ago, the CCT boss, Umar was caught on viral video assaulting and causing injury to a security man named Clement Sargwak, a 22-year-old at the popular Banex Plaza wuse 2, Abuja, who had told him to park his car appropriately.

This caused a national outcry where many stakeholders called for the removal of Umar. But in a swift attempt to justify his action, the CCT spokesman, said the guard was rude and called those that resisted him “Biafra Boys”.

President of the NYCN, Isah Abubakar made available to thenewsguru.ng frowned at the CCT Chairman usage of “Biafran Boys” to describe Nigerians who are going about their lawful businesses.

“…it’s an attempt to stir division in the country so that he would escape public scrutiny and the consequences of his action….” Abubakar said

He added that “…assuming without conceding that the guard actually threatened the CCT Chairman, he (Tribunal chairman) shouldn’t have taken the law into his hands, noting that the conduct of the Judicial Officer has succeeded in inspiring millions of Nigerians to start taking the laws into their hands anytime they feel slighted.

The youths, therefore, called on Danladi Umar to resign from his position as the CCT Chairman, stressing, “We have every reason to believe that anybody from Eastern Nigeria that appears before CCT can’t get justice, following the “Biafran” mindset he holds against them.”

The youths appealed to the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest and prosecute him (Danladi Umar) for assaulting a law-abiding Nigerian on his duty post.

They called on the presidency to as a matter of urgency replaced Danladi as the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal if he fails to resign voluntarily.

The youths also called on the National Assembly to stop appropriating money to the Tribunal if Umar fails to resign and the presidency decides to retain him.

The statement expect Danladi Umar to apologise to South Easterners who believe in unity of Nigeria and are working hard to guarantee same.

“The members of Northern Youths Council of Nigeria will prepare for grand protest if the above demands are not met,” the statement said.

Tottenham face a huge pay-out if they sack manager Jose Mourinho.

The Athletic says Spurs would have to pay Mourinho almost £35million if they sacked him now.

The Portuguese boss has two years and four months left of his current deal that sees him earn £15m a year.

The Portuguese’s deal, which runs until the summer of 2023, has no exit option for either side.

That would mean Spurs chairman Daniel Levy having to pay out the remainder of his contract if he were to swing the axe – although there are no current plans to do so.

The 58-year-old signed a three-and-a-half-year deal to replace Mauricio Pochettino that is worth the same as his contract at Manchester United.
