SAD! Fire guts police station in Abuja

A fire outbreak has damaged parts of the Garki 2 Divisional Police Station in Abuja, threatening property worth hundreds of millions of naira.

The swift intervention of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) prevented the blaze from causing extensive destruction on Tuesday morning.

Assistant Controller General A.U. Umar, Head of Corporate Services at the FFS Headquarters, confirmed the incident in a brief statement, noting that property valued at over ₦200 million was salvaged through the prompt response of firemen.

Umar stated, “On Tuesday, 12th August 2025, our gallant men from the Federal Fire Service, National Headquarters, led by SF Agbo, swiftly responded to a fire outbreak at Garki 2 Divisional Police Station, Abuja, saving property worth over N200 million.

“The blaze, caused by an electrical surge, was quickly extinguished with CO₂ extinguishers, followed by salvage operations to prevent re-ignition.”

However, no casualties were reported as at the time of filing this report.

Umar added that the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Mohammed Amadu, commended the fire crew for their professionalism during the operation.

He said the agency also shared safety tips with the station to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Incidents of fire outbreaks in police stations and other public institutions across Nigeria are not uncommon, with most traced to electrical faults, faulty wiring, or power surges.

In December 2023, a similar fire incident occurred at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command Headquarters, damaging several offices before it was brought under control.

The Federal Fire Service has consistently urged government agencies to implement strict fire safety protocols, conduct regular electrical maintenance, and install functional firefighting equipment to curb such occurrences.

SAD! Military airstrike leaves over 100 d3ad in Sudanese market

Sudanese military air strike on a market in North Darfur killed more than 100 people on Monday, a pro-democracy lawyers’ group said Tuesday, in a war marked by claims of atrocities on all sides.

The Emergency Lawyers said Monday’s air strike also left hundreds injured in Kabkabiya, a town about 180 kilometres (112 miles) west of El-Fasher, the state capital that has been under siege from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since May.

Tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced in a 20-month war between the RSF and Sudan’s army that has left the northeast African country on the brink of famine, according to aid agencies.

“The air strike took place on the town’s weekly market day, where residents from various nearby villages had gathered to shop, resulting in the death of more than 100 people and injury of hundreds, including women and children,” said the lawyers’ group, which has been documenting human rights abuses during the conflict.

In footage sent to AFP purporting to show aftermath of Monday’s strike, people were seen sifting through rubble as the charred remains of children lay on scorched ground.

The footage was supplied by civil society group the Darfur General Coordination of Camps for the Displaced and Refugees and AFP has not been able to verify its accuracy.

The lawyers group said in a separate incident on Monday evening three neighbourhoods were hit with barrel bombs in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, without reporting casualties.

Darfur, a region the size of France, is home to around a quarter of Sudan’s population but more than half of its 10 million are displaced.

A UN-backed report in July said famine had taken hold in a major refugee camp in North Darfur after a months-long RSF siege disabled nearly all trade and aid access.

The lawyers group said they “condemn in the strongest terms the horrendous massacres committed by army air strikes” in Kabkabiya.

They flagged another incident in North Kordofan state in which drone that had crashed on November 26 exploded on Monday evening, killing six people.

They said recent strikes across Sudan were part of an “escalation campaign… deliberately concentrated on densely populated residential areas”, contradicting claims by warring parties that they only target military objectives.

Both the army and the RSF have been accused of indiscriminately targeting civilians and deliberately bombing residential areas.

Last week, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher called for immediate international action to address Sudan’s deepening crisis.

Fletcher said he had heard “heart-rending stories” from refugees fleeing the conflict during a recent visit.

Nearly 26 million people — about half the population — face the threat of starvation, with both sides accused of using hunger as a weapon of war.

“These numbers are staggering, and we cannot turn our backs,” Fletcher said.

SAD! One woman, girl k!lled every 10 minutes worldwide – UN Women

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25, the report Femicides in 2023: Global Estimates of Intimate Partner/Family Member Femicides by UN Women and UNODC reveals that femicide—the most extreme form of violence against women and girls—remains pervasive in the world.

Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023. 60 per cent of these homicides -51,000- were committed by an intimate partner or other family member. 140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, which means one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes.

In 2023, Africa recorded the highest rates of intimate partner and family-related femicide, followed by the Americas and then by Oceania. In Europe and the Americas, most women killed in the domestic sphere (64 per cent and 58 per cent, respectively) were victims of intimate partners, while elsewhere, family members were the primary perpetrators.

“Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is preventable. We need robust legislation, improved data collection, greater government accountability, a zero-tolerance culture, and increased funding for women’s rights organizations and institutional bodies. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2025, it is time for world leaders to UNiTE and act with urgency, recommit, and channel the resources needed to end this crisis once and for all”, highlighted UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous.

“The new femicide report highlights the urgent need for strong criminal justice systems that hold perpetrators accountable, while ensuring adequate support for survivors, including access to safe and transparent reporting mechanisms,” said Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC. “At the same time, we must confront and dismantle the gender biases, power imbalances, and harmful norms that perpetuate violence against women. As this year’s 16 Days of Activism Campaign begins, we must act now to protect women’s lives.”

The 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2025, coupled with the fast-approaching five-year deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, presents a critical opportunity to rally all stakeholders to take decisive and urgent action for women’s rights and gender equality. This includes ending impunity and preventing all forms of violence against women and girls.

A terrific accident has claimed the lives of a middle-aged woman and her two children after the bus they were traveling in caught fire near Manderegi village, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The incident, which occurred on an 18-seater commuter bus with registration number BGT 996 LG, left 12 other passengers with severe burns.

The bus was reportedly en route to Kogi State when it suddenly burst into flames.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were trapped inside the vehicle and burnt beyond recognition.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later evacuated the remains of the deceased and transported the injured to a hospital in Abaji for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Muta’ah Chorrie, attributed the tragedy to the driver’s negligence.

According to Chorrie, the driver had stored a jerrican filled with fuel in the bus alongside passengers, which likely contributed to the fire.

He said, “Let me tell you, this is what we have been saying that there is danger in carrying extra fuel with passengers while traveling. We have been sensitizing motorists on this but some defiant drivers still carry them.’’

SAD! Two more corpses found from Port Harcourt helicopter crash – NSB

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that two more bodies have been recovered from the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter that crashed in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Three were confirmed dead following the crash on Thursday. Eight persons (six passengers and two crew members) were on board the aircraft when the incident happened.

Barely a day after the crash, the NSIB said more bodies have been recovered while three more persons remain unaccounted for.

“We have recovered two more bodies, making it a total of five. There are three more down there that hopefully will be recovered today,” NSIB Director General, Alex Badeh, said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s breakfast show Sunrise Daily.

When asked if there are chances that none of those on board the aircraft survived the crash, Badeh said, “Unfortunately. this time, that is the working theory”.

According to him, investigators are on their way to the scene of the accident, saying it would take days for the wreckage of the aircraft to be recovered.

He said, “The priority is to recover the rest of the bodies there” but there is a “chance” that some persons onboard the aircraft might be alive.

“Human beings are resilient. As long as they have their life support devices, there is a chance we might find survivors there,” Badeh said.

The helicopter, with registration 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation, crashed one kilometre away from its destination. It was engaged by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

It crashed around 11:22 am along the waterways in the Rivers State capital after taking off from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the FPSO – NUIMS ANTAN oil rig.

The cause of the incident is unclear as of now but Badeh said “there was so light and moderate rain on their arrival and there was an overcast. We would look into that. That might have a chance or a role to play.

“Other than that, I can’t really say until we recover the flight recorder and speak to more witnesses there.”
