    Man who arrived from U.S. on Saturday found lifeless in hotel

    The Police Command in Ogun State has confirmed the death of one Sunday Abidoye, whose lifeless body was discovered in one of the rooms at Creestar Hotel in Sagamu on Wednesday.

    Omolola Odutola, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

    She said the hotel’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), who preferred to be addressed as Oluwole, reported the incident regarding the discovery of the deceased customer to the police.

    “On receiving the report, a team of detectives visited the scene and on arrival found the body of the deceased already placed inside a car outside the hotel.

    “At that point it was being prepared to be taken  to the morgue by his family,” Odutola, a Superintendent of Police (SP), added.

    She stated that the deceased’s brother, Jimoh Godday, residing in Imota Town in Lagos State, informed the police team that his brother had arrived in Nigeria from the U.S. on Saturday.

    “He mentioned that he had called him (Abidoye) on Monday, and after not getting a response, he visited the hotel.

    “He also said, after knocking the door severally, he requested a spare key from the hotel manager to enter the room, where they discovered his brother’s lifeless body.

    “Various drugs and traditional medicine were recovered from the room. The centre of the bed was soaked with a liquid-like substance.

    “Also, a friend of the deceased, Ogunmonti Ogunwole, confirmed that he accompanied the deceased to purchase nine different types of medication the previous day due to his complaints of illness,” Odutola explained.

    The Police spokesperson said further that the deceased’s remains had been evacuated to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH morgue in Sagamu for an autopsy.

    She disclosed that no known cause of death had been arrived at yet, adding that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation.

    Odutola however advised that people should shun the use of drugs without following necessary medical prescriptions.

    Again, cultists resume clashes in Sagamu

    Cultists again went for eachother’s jugular in Sagamu, Ogun state few months after two dreaded cult groups clashed killing and injuring many.

    Recall that about 20 persons were killed in September when members of the Eiye and Aiye confraternities clashed.

    No fewer than three innocent school boys were caught up in the crisis as they were shot dead by unknown cultists.

    The police and the Department of State Services had, in collaboration with the Ogun State Government, taken measures to put an end to the killings.
    However, the cultists reportedly resumed killing on Friday by shooting two persons dead in the Latawa area of Sagamu.

    Residents of the town told newsmen that they “heard gunshot in the early hours of Saturday.”

    Contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that there was a suspected murder incident in Sagamu.

    According to her, the command “received a report of a suspected murder in Sagamu.”

    Odutola quoted the Sagamu Divisional Police Officer as saying that while he and his men were on a vehicular patrol along Ewusi Street towards the Ita Oba roundabout, they intercepted information about a shooting incident.

    “The report stated that a group of unidentified gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed a young man whose identity is currently unknown.

    “Upon receiving the information, the DPO immediately proceeded towards the location of the gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood. The examination of the body revealed bullet wounds on the neck, stomach, and hand. Additionally, three expended cartridges were found at the scene,” she stated.

    The body of the deceased has been transported to a nearby morgue, with two large cowries found on him, it was said.

    Meanwhile, Odutola confirmed that the State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, is aware of the incident and “has personally arrived in Sagamu to oversee an open investigation into this tragic killing.”

    Police Inspector, 2 security guards shot as robbers invade hotel in Sagamu

    The Police Command in Ogun on Friday in Abeokuta said a Police Inspector and two security guards were injured after being shot by suspected armed robbers.

    SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in a statement, disclosed that the robbers had invaded a hotel in the Sagamu area of the state.

    Odutola also stated that two of the robbers were fatally wounded by policemen who responded to a distress call during the invasion of the hotel.

    “At about 1 a.m., a distress call was received by the Sagamu division that armed hoodlums were operating at the Remo Majestic Hotel in Sagamu.

    “Based on the report, a combined team of policemen were mobilised to the scene.

    “Immediately the hoodlums sighted the policemen, they opened fire on them, while the policemen engaged the hoodlums.

    ”Two of the hoodlums were fatally wounded, while others escaped into the nearby bush with bullet wounds,” she said.

    The PPRO added that locally-made single barrel guns, four unexpended cartridges, 13 expended cartridges, one big scissors, and 10 Android phones were recovered in the process.

    “Also, one Java phone and a white Toyota Venza car with number plate BWR 123 DD Abuja were among items recovered at the scene of crime.

    “The Police Inspector and the two security guards were shot by the armed robbers, but were rescued and taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for medical attention.

    ”They are reported to be in stable condition,” she said.

    Odutola said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspected armed robbers had earlier mingled with lodgers before launching the dastard attack.

    She stated that the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, had been briefed about the matter and had ordered an immediate manhunt for the fleeing suspects who escaped with bullet wounds.

    Sagamu cult clash: Ogun Govt lifts curfew

    The Ogun Government has lifted the curfew imposed on Sagamu town, following deadly clashes between rival cult groups.

    This is contained in a statement by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, in Abeokuta.

    The restriction of human and vehicular movement between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. was imposed on Sept. 18, as an immediate response to the cult clashes in Sagamu town, Ogun.

    Talabi said the improved security situation across the troubled town informed the decision to lift the curfew.

    He said that normalcy had returned to the town while security agents continued investigating the remote and immediate causes of the cult clashes.

    According to him, Gov. Dapo Abiodun is committed to ridding the state of violence.

    The SSG urged the people of Sagamu to go about their daily activities without fear, adding that adequate security would remain on the ground in spite of lifting of the curfew.

    NAN also reports that the police confirmed the arrest of 19 persons suspected to be members of different cult groups in connection with the cult clashes that left eight persons dead in Sagamu area of the state.

    This is contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Omolola Odutola, on Monday.

    According to the statement, 19 persons were arrested at different locations in the Sagamu area of the state through the combined effort of various formations of the Police Force.

    She said that during the operation, a suspected kingpin of the Eiye Confraternity, Ogunnibi Hammed, who was allegedly responsible for attacks against rival cult groups in the state, was also arrested.

    She noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, had ordered the immediate investigation of the individuals arrested while promising that the public would be duly informed of further developments on the case.

    “The Commissioner of Police is informed about the arrests and has ordered an immediate investigation into the individuals apprehended. As the investigation progresses, the police will provide updates to the public regarding any relevant developments in this case”, Odutola said.

    Abiodun Alamutu, the Ogun state Commissioner of Police  has declared that individuals engaging in cult killings in Sagamu are neither students nor members of a political party.

    Alamatu made this known few days after the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly from Sagamu 1 Constituency, Damilare Bello, in connection with the cult killings that claimed many lives in Sagamu last weekend.

    Recall that  All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have since been trading blame over who is responsible for the recurring cult clashes in Sagamu.

    The Commissioner of Police spoke during a radio programme on OGBC 2, Abeokuta, on Sunday.

    He said: “We have devised various ways to stem the tide. Unfortunately, it re-erupted last week in Sagamu. I want to admit that this set of vicious and depraved persons are neither students nor partisans.”

    He explained that normalcy has been restored in Sagamu, adding: “We want to put in a structure that would keep them (cultists) at bay for a reasonable number of years and possibly deter other youths from joining their fold.”

    Alamutu disclosed that the command is working with the judiciary to ensure cases of cultism are dealt with expeditiously because it has become a serious challenge to society.

    Sagamu cult clash: DSS arrests lawmaker, six others

    Security operatives in Ogun State on Wednesday tracked six suspected cultists, allegedly involved in the violence that erupted in Sagamu at the weekend to the official residence of a member of the state House of Assembly.

    The member, representing Sagamu State Constituency (1), Hon. Damilare Bello Mohammed, was alleged to have provided shelter to the fleeing cultists.

    A team of security operatives, in a sting operation after a tip-off, arrested the suspects in the premises of the lawmaker.

    Those arrested, according to sources, include Damilare Bello Mohammed aka DRE, Debbo Animashaun, Bamidele Saheed, Ismaila Onitire, Adewale Otesanya and Tobi Owoade.

    They are presently undergoing interrogation at the Department of State Service (DSS).

    Sources revealed that many dangerous weapons, including guns, were recovered from the suspects.

    Hon. Bello was arrested by the DSS for masterminding the violent protest that took place in February this year in Sagamu over the naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    During the protest, irate youths vandalised about 10 banks and other public infrastructures.

    Last weekend, Governor Dapo Abiodun vowed that the state will introduce death penalty to curb against cultism in the state.

    Ogun Govt restricts movement in Sagamu

    Following recent clashes among rival cult groups in Sagamu, the Ogun government has announced restriction of movement from 7p.m to 6a.m.

    This is contained in a statement in Abeokuta on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Dapo Abiodun, Mr Lekan Adeniran.

    Abiodun assured residents of the town of their security and property.

    He urged residents of the town to abide with the restriction order pending the time the security of the area would improve, saying police and other security agencies were on top of the situation to restore normalcy.

    “This is to notify residents of Sagamu and its environs of total restriction of human and vehicular movement as a way of taking firm control of the security architecture of the area and protect the lives of the people and their property.

    “We, therefore, implore the residents of the area to abide strictly to this restriction order and cooperate with security agencies to restore normalcy and bring perpetrators of these dastardly acts to book immediately,” he said.

    Ogun gov, Abiodun orders crackdown on cultists in Sagamu

    Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, on Monday, directed security agencies in the state to rid Sagamu and its environs of cultists and cult-related activities in the state.

    Abiodun, in a statement issued in Abeokuta by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, expressed the regret for the avoidable loss of innocent lives and wanton destruction of property by the hoodlums.

    The directive came in the wake of renewed clashes among rival cult gangs in the town at the weekend, raising tension and panic among residents of the town.

    According to him, the police and sister security agencies have been given a matching order to deal ruthlessly and decisively with those disturbing the peace of the town.

    The governor reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance to brigandage and lawlessness, warning that those responsible for the current crisis in the town would find themselves to blame.

    “As a responsible and responsive government, we are very sad with the resurgence of activities of criminal elements under different outlawed groups, raising unnecessary tension in the sleepy town of Sagamu and its environs.

    “Let me categorically state that we are more than determined to put an end quickly to the nefarious activities of these hoodlums and enemies of our people who are hell-bent on truncating the peace of our land.

    “Let these urchins be rest assured that the state will be too hot for them to operate as we are re-evaluating the security architecture for greater surveillance and tactical operation,” he said.

    The governor noted that the new security approach would be implemented in collaboration with the traditional institution, community and religious leaders, youth groups as well as other critical stakeholders.

    Abiodun, therefore, appealed to people of the town to provide adequate and useful information to security agencies for prompt response in order to prevent future occurrences.

    As naira woes worsen across the country, angry Nigerians again protested in Ogun State, with videos online showing two banks set on fire in the Sagamu area of the state.

    The videos shared on Monday showed many residents watching as Keystone and Union banks were set ablaze with some youths holding planks in protest.

    Reacting to the development, a Twitter user, @arranowanna wrote, “Kindly advise your friends, families and acquaintances to avoid any protests. Take your frustration to the ballots on Saturday. Don’t burn banks, don’t burn petrol stations, don’t burn government properties.”

    Another user, @morningstar_305 wrote, “I just put a call through to the house and it was confirmed to me that keystone bank and union bank at ijoku has been set ablaze by angry citizens.”

    While popular tweep, Pooja, wrote, “If you are in Sagamu, be careful cos there is a protest on new naira notes.”

    One dead, six injured in Sagamu-Benin expressway accident

    One person was confirmed dead while six others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Toyota Sienna and a Toyota RAV4 near Remo Majestic Hotel, Sagamu on the Sagamu-Benin expressway.

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesman, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps in Ogun confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Sunday.

    Akinbiyi explained that the incident occured at 9:20am, saying that the accident was caused by tyre burst on the part of the sienna vehicle marked EL 839 FST.

    He noted that seven people were involved in the accident.

    According to an eyewitness, the Sienna car was moving along side the Rav 4 vehicle when one of the tyres of the Sienna vehicle bursted.

    “It fell over the Rav 4 vehicle marked 6172 DLA resulting in the death of one of the occupants of the Sienna vehicle while six other passengers in both vehicles were injured,” he said.

    He urged drivers to shun speeding and the use of bad and second hand tyres.
