Salah predicts team to win AFCON 2021 in Cameroon

Egypt forward, Mohamed Salah, has predicted his country to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The Egyptian captain said the Pharaohs would give everything to win the 2021 AFCON trophy.

Salah said this after leading his team to qualify for the AFCON quarter-final.

Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 5-4 on a penalty shootout in the AFCON round of 16 encounter this week to qualify for the last-8.

Carlos Queiroz’s men will now take on Morocco in the AFCON last-8 on Sunday.

“Of course, I want to win something with the national team. It is my country, which I love the most. This trophy for me would be completely different, would be the closest to my heart,” Salah said at his post-match press conference after Egypt defeated Ivory Coast on Wednesday.

“We were close before to win this African Cup [in 2017], we gave it everything, but we were not lucky to win it. But it is ok, now we’re here in the new one.

“We have to fight for it, we’ve to give everything to win it and I am sure the players have the same feeling.”

How Super Eagles silenced Salah in AFCON win – Okoye

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye has revealed how the team was able to keep Egypt main man, Mohamed Salah quiet during their Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON Group D opener on Tuesday.

The Netherlands-based goalkeeper hailed the defenders and midfielders for a job well done in silencing the Premier League highest goal scorer this season.

For the entire duration of the match, Salah only had one clear-cut chance but was denied scoring.

Okoye, who was seemingly on a holiday for the whole of 90 minutes said the Super Eagles players stopped Salah by sticking to him throughout the contest.

The goalkeeper told reporters after the game, “Of course, he is one of the best players in the world, we also have fantastic defenders, fantastic midfielders so I think you could see that they were very sharp on him and he almost had no chance.

“It was great. Omeruo did very, very well, he shone in this game and he was very important for us.

“We have to continue to give our best for the country, for our families, and then we can reach very, very far.”

How Mourinho rejection forced me to rethink – Salah

Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah has explained how rejection by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea kicked his career into action.

In January 2014 Chelsea paid £11million to Swiss champions Basel for Salah’s signature, with the young Egyptian one of Europe’s hottest properties.

But he made just 19 appearances for the Blues across two-and-a-half years, with Mourinho unwilling to give Salah the required game-time to develop.

“When I look back, [I had] bad advice with the situation,” the Egypt captain told GQ.

“It was so tough for me, mentally. I couldn’t handle the pressure I had from the media, coming from outside. I was not playing that much. I felt, ‘No, I need to go’.”

Salah did just that and enjoyed loan spells in Italy with Fiorentina and Roma, joining the latter on a permanent deal in 2016.

Only a year later and he came back to England to prove his doubters wrong, with Liverpool forking out £36.9million.

“You have two choices: to tell the people that they are right to put you on a bench, or to prove them wrong,” the ex- Serie A star went on. “I needed to prove them wrong.

“The best thing you could have is a serious conversation with yourself. Just get a coffee and just sit like this and just ask yourself what you want.

“Some people can’t face themselves properly. But I have no problem with that. If I’m struggling, I just face myself and just feel where I am.”

AFCON: Liverpool reach crucial Egyptian FA agreement over Salah

Liverpool have reached an agreement with the Egyptian FA regarding Mohamed Salah’s availability before the African Cup of Nations.

The Mirror says Liverpool have struck an agreement with the Egyptian FA to release Salah immediately after their clash with Chelsea.

And so the prolific winger will be available to Jurgen Klopp for what could be a vital fixture in the Premier League title race.

It remains to be seen whether Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will be afforded the same luxury by the Senegalese and Guinean footballing authorities respectively.

But even a run to the Afcon final for any of those players would only result in them missing a further two Premier League games.

Salah frustrated as Klopp defends substitution against Newcastle

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp explained substituting Mohamed Salah during victory over Newcastle United.

Salah’s goal in the 25th minute completed a comeback for the hosts after Jonjo Shelvey had given the visitors a shock lead early on.

And that strike from the Egyptian, which made it 2-1, was the 15th successive Premier League match in which he has either scored or assisted in, equalling Jamie Vardy ‘s record.

But Salah was hauled off well before Trent-Alexander-Arnold ‘s late sealer when the game was from from over, with Klopp bringing on Roberto Firmino to see-out the match.

“Today was right to take him off a bit earlier,” the Liverpool boss told BT Sport, explaining his decision which left the 29-year-old visibly frustrated in the 74th minute.

“We play in three days again.”

On Salah’s latest landmark, Klopp said: “That’s quite amazing that. His assists are as important [as the goals].”

“It has helped me a lot,” he said of his time in Italy. “When I was at Chelsea I had to change the football and culture.

“I needed to change my football so I went to Italy, I played good and it’s helped me to be where I am at the moment.

“I had a great time there and they (Fiorentina and Roma fans) were unbelievable. They showed me love.

“I have good memories there, which is great. They helped me to improve myself as a person and a player, so I have to say thank you very much and hopefully see each other soon – play against each other maybe!”

Chelsea great Didier Drogba has urged Mohamed Salah to leave Liverpool and return to Stamford Bridge.

Drogba and Liverpool star Salah were teammates at Chelsea in 2014.

And Ivorian great Drogba admits he’d like to see the Egyptian return to his former club amid speculation over his future at Anfield.

“If I am selfish, I will tell Salah to leave Liverpool and return to Chelsea,” Drogba joked when speaking on Al-Axis TV.

“My opinion is that Salah will remain the best, no matter if he continues at Liverpool or if he moves.

“Any other team would perform better [with him] because he understands what he is doing, is good at scoring and creating goals, and only needs the confidence of the coach.

“I do not know what his decision would be. This is his decision alone and his future, but wherever he goes, I will be one of his fans.”

Salah will destroy all my EPL records – Drogba

Former Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba, has admitted that Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah is going to destroy all his records in the Premier League.

Drogba, who said he wants to cry, also commented on Salah’s time at Chelsea.

The Ivorian scored 164 goals in 381 appearances for Chelsea in nine seasons at Stamford Bridge.

He was also in the Chelsea squad with Salah in the 2014/15 season, who now plays for Premier League rivals, Liverpool.

In an interview with Mehwar TV via KingFut, Drogba spoke on Salah’s time at Chelsea and how well he is doing currently at Liverpool.

He said: “If he continues he’s going to destroy all my records! I want to cry.

“What I’ve seen during training, and all his teammates will tell you, the quality was there. He just needed time on the pitch to show his talent and his quality.

“When you look at the squad we had at the time, it was not easy to play, but what really got me attached to Mo is that he’s really nice, he’s really polite, even when he was not playing.

“He was sad not to contribute, but he was always good. When you have this kind of intelligence it’s just a matter of time before you blow up.”

Salah, who scored 31 goals last season for Liverpool, has continued his great form in the 2021-2022 season already scoring 15 goals and registering six assists in 15 games for the Reds.
