No big secret over Salah’s Liverpool success – Aquilani

Alberto Aquilani says Mohamed Salah’s success with Liverpool is down to his unrelenting work ethic.

Aquilani, a former Liverpool midfielder, noticed Salah’s talent many years ago during their brief spell together in Serie A with Fiorentina.

“It was unbelievable. He was a player on another level, but also as a guy, a man,” the 37-year-old told the Liverpool Echo of Salah. “In the game, he was good. But in the training, he was unbelievable. He was unstoppable.

“Maybe it is easier in Italy. More space. But he confirms in England he is one of the best players in the world.

“We could see he was good. We could feel he was good. Probably not like now, but we felt he was a very, very good player.”

I don’t sacrifice my game for Mane and Salah – Firmino

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino says he’s happy with his role in manager Jurgen Klopp’s setup.

Firmino has dismissed claims he sacrifices himself to allow team-mates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane flourish.

The Brazilian, 30, has scored 34 Premier League goals since the start of the 2018-19 campaign – 39 fewer than Salah and 22 fewer than Mane.

Speaking to Globo Esporte, Firmino said: “I don’t see it that way.

“Each one has a very well-defined role on the field, it’s a team that has been playing together for some time and we know each other very well.

“We play for each other for Liverpool, and that makes a difference.”

He added: “Besides being an excellent coach, Klopp is a sensational guy, with a huge heart.

“And I can say that, if I’m a better player today, it’s a lot thanks to him. We’ve known each other since German football and, here at Liverpool, we’ve been together for six years.

“Today, I feel comfortable playing in more than one position, I have more freedom to move and also help with marking.”

  • EPL: Cristiano Ronaldo superior to Salah – Solskjaer

EPL: Cristiano Ronaldo superior to Salah – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Cristiano Ronaldo is a superior striker to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The pair will face-off on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer offered his thoughts on the Salah-Ronaldo comparisons.

“I will always back Cristiano Ronaldo in any competition,” he said. “His goal-scoring record is fantastic. That said, Mohamed Salah is on fire.

“We have to be at our best to defend against him. We have to do a good job, not just against him.

“I am a big admirer of their frontline. They’re players you have to be nailed on for 95 minutes against to keep a clean sheet.

“Liverpool are one of the teams we’ve been trying to catch over the last four years. We have to improve to get up to their level of the last four years.”

  • Salah not the best in the world – Thierry Henry

Salah not the best in the world – Thierry Henry

Arsenal great Thierry Henry isn’t buying into the hype around Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah.

For many inside the game, Salah is currently the best player in the world.

But Henry says: “He’s not the best in the world yet.

“The goals he is scoring right now are fantastic, but how can you forget (Robert) Lewandowski and how can you forget (Karim) Benzema? I do not think Salah is really there yet, it is important to perform for both club teams and national teams.

“Is he the best player in the Premier League right now? Yes, it’s obvious. But with the day-to-day form, I keep Benzema higher. What he is doing for Real Madrid and France right now I can not overlook.”

  • EPL: Salah not up to Messi standard – Andros Townsend

EPL: Salah not up to Messi standard – Andros Townsend

Everton attacker Andros Townsend says it’s wrong to liken Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah to Leo Messi.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Egyptian international was currently the best player in Europe.

Jamie O’Hara later claimed that Salah was the closest thing the English game had to Lionel Messi, but Townsend was having none of that when speaking to talkSPORT on Monday morning.

When asked about Carragher’s comments, the Everton winger responded: “He’s [Salah] definitely up there, that’s for sure!

I don’t agree with Mr Clickbait saying he’s the closest thing we’ve got to Messi. I don’t agree with that!”

  • Salah equals Gerrard’s Champions League record

Salah equals Gerrard’s Champions League record

Mohamed Salah equalled Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool record for most Champions League/European Cup goals at Anfield with his strike against AC Milan on Wednesday.

The goal was Salah’s 14th in the Champions League at Anfield, going level with Reds legend Gerrard.

Salah had scored just three Champions League goals in his career before moving to Liverpool from Roma, but he’s since become a serial scorer in the competition.

The Egypt star now has 26 Champions League goals for Liverpool, with more than half of those coming at home.

One of his most memorable tallies came away from Anfield, as he opened the scoring in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham with a penalty in the second minute.

  • Salah scores 100th EPL goal in Liverpool win

Salah scores 100th EPL goal in Liverpool win

Liverpool kept pace with the Premier League’s leading pack as Mohamed Salah’s 100th English top-flight goal helped them to victory at Leeds.

The game was somewhat marred, though, by a serious injury to young midfielder Harvey Elliott, who was stretchered off following an initially innocuous-looking sliding challenge from Pascal Struijk that ultimately saw the Leeds player sent off.

Liverpool were already firmly in control of the game by then, though.

Egyptian forward Salah was perfectly placed to tap in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross and give the Reds a 20th-minute advantage, with Fabinho bundling home the second following a corner five minutes after the break.

Sadio Mane had missed a number of chances in the game, but made absolutely certain of the points with a low finish into the far bottom corner in injury time.

Leeds had their chances too, with Rodrigo firing the best of them straight at Alisson with the game still goalless.

But with a man fewer, Leeds could not muster the challenge required and have now failed to win any of their first four top-flight matches in a season for the first time since 1958-59.

They will also now have to deal with a shortage of numbers in central defence, with Struijk banned and Diego Llorente limping off in the first half to join Robin Koch on the treatment table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side move to 10 points, level at the top, but with a lower number of goals scored than Manchester United and level with Chelsea.

  • Real Madrid to offer Hazard to Liverpool in talks for Salah

Real Madrid to offer Hazard to Liverpool in talks for Salah

Real Madrid are ready to offer Eden Hazard to Liverpool in talks for Mohamed Salah.

While PSG striker Kylian Mbappe is their top attacking target this summer, if a deal cannot be struck, Real will make an attempt for Salah.

And with the aim of also offloading Hazard in the coming weeks, Real are willing to include the Belgium international in part exchange for Salah, reports Voetbal24.

Salah has a deal with Liverpool to 2023 and has been waiting for the Reds to open talks about a new deal. The Egypt international hasn’t been shy talking up the prospect of a move to the LaLiga.

Real are keen and in order to keep the cash component down, they’re willing to include former Chelsea captain Hazard in their offer.

  • Liverpool play better without Salah – James

Liverpool play better without Salah – James

Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James says Mohamed Salah should be sold.

James insists Liverpool play better without Salah.

He told the Mirror: “The idea that they’ll spend mega-millions is very unlikely, I think they will have to send players away.

“He may be second in the Golden Boot, but I think Liverpool play better without Salah. And Liverpool can get an opportunity to make money on Salah.

“(Diogo) Jota naturally fits into the front trio, (Roberto) Firmino gets more freedom without a doubt. Liverpool gets a new dynamic up front instead of what seems to be a dependence on Salah’s goals.”
