What Salah said after I dived against Liverpool – Wolves defender

Wolves defender Conor Coady has revealed he was rapped by Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah for diving earlier this season.

Coady, a former Reds defender, was caught up in simulation controversy when he went to ground and Wolves were awarded a penalty on their Premier League visit to Liverpool in December, with the decision by referee Craig Pawson overturned by VAR.

“I got some serious stick for that!” he said, speaking on the Greatest Game podcast.

“As the ball comes in, you know when you’re thinking someone is going to touch you, as I’m thinking that he (Mane) is going to touch me, he never, he moved his foot (away) dead quick.

“So I go down and I was hoping that the referee wouldn’t blow his whistle.

“The next minute, the whistle goes and I just put my head down into the turf and thought ‘oh for f**** sake’.

“So I’m thinking they’re obviously going to see it on VAR. I’m walking back and all the Liverpool players are giving me stick, I just put my head down and walked back.

“I remember as I’m walking back Salah, of all people, said to me ‘you can’t do that, my friend’. I didn’t even appeal about it.

“My family gave me a bit of stick and said ‘what are you doing?!?’ I looked stupid.”

I wish we could play Man Utd all the time – Salah

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah admits the pressure of a top four finish is intense.

The Reds need to win their five remaining games to have any realistic hope of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, starting at Manchester United on Sunday – a venue where they last won more than seven years ago.

And when asked about the difference between fighting for the title and fourth place, Salah said: “I think it is hard. The pressure is higher and higher and it’s more difficult for us because now you just feel like you have to win every game.

“But I think what we can do is take one game at a time and just focus on it and don’t think about the other four games.

“Man United is a really big game and everybody in the world is waiting for that game. I think it means for Man United a lot to beat us as well, to stop us playing in the Champions League. I understand that but for us it is more motivation.

“It’s one of the biggest games – I would love to play it all the time!”

Salah added: “We started the season really well and everybody was saying we were going to win the Premier League again, and since we started to drop points you start to feel the pressure more… you feel ‘now we’re going to lose it, we’re going to lose the Premier League’ and the pressure comes higher and higher.

“And we had the injuries: we lost Hendo in his position, we lost Fabinho in his position and of course we lost all the centre-backs, so it was tough for us to handle that.”

Salah relieved after Liverpool defeat Aston Villa

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was delighted after their late, late victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored an injury-time winner as Liverpool came from behind to beat Aston Villa and end a run of six consecutive defeats at Anfield.

Ollie Watkins – who scored a hat-trick in Villa’s 7-2 win in the reverse game – fired the visitors ahead with a shot which squirmed through Alisson.

The Reds drew level when Salah headed into an empty net after Emiliano Martinez parried Andy Robertson’s cross.

And late on Alexander-Arnold curled home from the edge of the box after Villa failed to clear the ball.

Salah later said, “Finally! It was a great game, tough game but we won the game and that was the most important thing.

“We have lost a couple of games here and mentally it was like ‘oh no, not again’ but we did a good job second-half.

“It’s hard not to win at Anfield for a couple of games, we also missed a couple of chances in the first half and we were thinking ‘not again’ but the second half we managed to play good.

“It’s really important to win. I think there are only seven games left? So it’s really important. We want to play Champions League next year but we just need to focus on each game and try and win them all and hopefully, we can be in that fourth place.”

On Alexander-Arnold, he added: “I think he just needs to push himself. He’s been training well and he’s played really well the last couple of games. He just needs to try and keep focused – don’t listen to anyone, just try as hard as you can and it will come.”

Zidane responds to Salah’s move to Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has addressed the rumours linking Mohamed Salah with the La Liga club ahead of their Champions League quarter-final clash with Liverpool.

The Egyptian made headlines last week after admitting that he would be open to playing in Spain at some point in the future.

Asked if he would like to coach Salah, the Madrid boss told reporters: “He isn’t my player.

“I have 25 players here, at the moment I’m a Real Madrid coach and I enjoy every day of the moment.”

Real Madrid weaker without Ronaldo – Salah

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah says Real Madrid are weaker without Cristiano Ronaldo.

The two giants are to meet in the Champions League quarterfinals and Salah says it’s noticeable that Real have struggled since Ronaldo’s departure for Juventus.

He told Marca: “They have lost some great players, like Cristiano Ronaldo, the best in their history, someone who scored a lot of goals.

“At the same time they have signed Hazard. Eden has not been lucky, he has been injured … But he is different.

“The team is now in the quarterfinals, they have great players, although they have lost Ronaldo’s goals. I can’t say which one is better, I simply say that they are in the quarterfinals now, surely they are prepared and we need to be ready to face them.”

Ex-Roma president clashes with fan over Salah sale

Former Roma president James Pallotta has clashed furiously with a fan online over the sale of Mohamed Salah to Liverpool.

Salah has starred for Liverpool ever since leaving Roma in 2017 for £35m.

One fan online took on Pallotta, suggesting it was all about money, claiming Roma only cared about Financial Fair Play regulations.

He posted to social media: “Replacing Salah with [Patrik] Schick is confirmation of the inability of a company that constantly sells the best players.

“You’re not good enough at turning omelettes, trust me.”

Pallotta replied: “You still show ignorance by ignoring fact that Salah wanted to leave and had one year left [on his contract].

“So sell for 42 [million euros] or get zero?”

The fan’s responded: “How about offering him enough to stay?

“Also, who to believe: the person who was here and handled the transfer specifying ‘we had to sell him for FFP’ and Totti clarifying he did not want to leave or the person who left us on the brink of bankruptcy?”

Pallotta then declared: “It has nothing to do with money. God almighty.

“He wanted to go back to the league that told him he wasn’t good enough.

“By the way. When I bought the team it was in bankruptcy. We bought it from Unicredit.”

The supporter continued: “In order to do what other teams have done, you need to go through sponsorships – sadly, only wealthy ownerships can do that.

“Jimmy simply did not have that wealth but wanted to blame FFP to maintain consensus among the lesser brilliant minds. It really is that simple.”

Having had enough, Pallotta blasted: “You are seriously at the top of the list of f***ing idiots.

“Absolutely in a category of your own.

“I am going to have to think over the weekend how to classify you.”

Liverpool legend: Just sell Salah, let him go

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler feels it’s time to sell Mohamed Salah.

Fowler says the club shouldn’t keep hold of the striker if he wishes to leave this summer.

He told the Mirror: “If he wants to leave, let him do it.

“I’m not going to give in to Salah. I love him, but nowadays it’s about what the player wants, so the ball is in his half, not Liverpool’s.

“If he wants to leave, he should do so. If a player wants to leave, we have to accept it.

“I strongly believe that if they are unhappy, then they should leave. Jürgen Klopp has said the same thing, he does not want anyone in the club who does not want to be there.”

Havertz can emulate De Bruyne, Salah – Lampard

Frank Lampard has defended Kai Havertz over criticism that he looked like he was ‘not bothered’ during Chelsea’s recent 2-0 defeat to Leicester City.

Ahead of an FA Cup clash with Luton, Lampard has hit out at critics of Havertz’s work rate.

“I can officially say from working with Kai that desire is absolutely not part of the issue. Is he as confident right now, at this minute, as he can be or will be? No, because he is having a tough moment, as are other members of the squad,” Lampard told reporters.

“Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah are players who were here at a similar age to Kai. They went away and took time and came back, and now they are absolute Premier League legends.

“I don’t want to build Kai up and put that pressure on his shoulders, but there clearly has to be a time with young players who come to this league, where people have to give them time, patience and sometimes a little bit of wriggle room.

“It’s not that everything will just happen in a few months or in one performance.

  • I spoke to Salah about captaincy disappointment – Klopp

I spoke to Salah about captaincy disappointment – Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has revealed he spoke to Mohamed Salah over the Egyptian’s frustration at missing out on the Liverpool captaincy for a game earlier this month.

But the Reds boss says Divock Origi is the player who really should have been upset with his decision.

Salah caused something of a stir when stating, in an interview with Spanish publication AS last week, that he had been “very disappointed” not to be handed the armband for Liverpool’s Champions League game away to FC Midtjylland on December 9.

Salah’s former international team-mate Mohamed Aboutrika followed that by saying that Salah was unhappy at Anfield and that he could be sold.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with West Brom, Klopp was happy to clarify that there was no issue between himself and Salah.

“I was captain for a long time during my career, and I often thought what a heck of a job it was,” Klopp said. “There were not a lot of benefits, just a lot of work with all the things around it.

“So I don’t feel the importance of being captain. Yes, we need one like Hendo [Jordan Henderson], that’s clear, but being captain for a game, I didn’t realise how important that can be for players. In this world, we make a big fuss about everything, and I didn’t realise it was that much a story for Trent or whatever.

“The rule here is, we have a players’ committee. Hendo wears the armband, and if he’s not playing then it’s Milly [James Milner]. If those two are not playing then it’s Virgil [van Dijk] and if all three are not playing, it’s Gini [Wijnaldum].

“If they all cannot play, then it’s usually the player who is longest at the club. And that was how I saw it in my understanding. Trent got it because he was longest at the club – professionally, not just his youth career.”
