Liverpool won’t force Salah to stay – Klopp

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp sees no reason why Mohamed Salah would want to leave the Premier League champions, but says he would not keep the Egyptian forward at the club against his will.

Salah told Spanish newspaper AS in an interview this month that he admired Real Madrid and Barcelona, fuelling talk in the British media that he was looking to move on.

“I think the only reason to leave Liverpool at the moment is the weather. What other reason could be there?” Klopp said at a news conference.

“This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, we pay good money … we have a sensational stadium with outstanding supporters.

“You cannot force people to stay but that is it … We make changes and bring players in and if a player wants to go then we cannot, probably not hold him back; it’s just that I would not understand why somebody would want to go.”

Salah was left on the bench for last weekend’s 7-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace, but still scored two goals when he came on to help the leaders maintain their fine form.

He became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League earlier this month in a 1-1 draw at Denmark’s Midtjylland.

Klopp said Salah’s comments about the Spanish sides were not an indication of his desire to leave Liverpool.

“If you ask any player in the world who is not playing for Barcelona or Madrid if he can imagine playing there one day and he said: ‘No, Spanish football is not for me,’ why would he say that?

“Mo is a very important player for me obviously but this story around is not.”

Liverpool are top of the table with 31 points from 14 games, four clear of second-placed Leicester City.

They face West Bromwich Albion, who are second from bottom, on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp speaks out on Salah speculation

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken out on the speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield.

Salah has been nothing short of sensational since his €42 million (£38m/$51m) move to Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017.

Former Egypt midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika caused a stir earlier this week when he suggested that the English champions are considering selling Salah amid reported interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Goal reports that Liverpool are certain to offer a prized asset the chance to extend his current contract beyond 2023, but he seemed to leave the door open to a transfer during a recent interview with Spanish publication AS.

Ahead of the Reds’ home fixture against West Brom on Sunday, Klopp was asked to comment on Salah’s situation, and he moved to quash ongoing rumours once and for all.

“We never speak about deals, why should we start now?” the Liverpool manager told a pre-match press conference. “Mo is in a good mood, a good moment, really good shape so that is the most important thing.

“You would have seen him laughing a lot in training, he enjoyed the session.

“All the rest is nice for all of you to write about but internally, no.”

Liverpool to hand unhappy Salah bumper pay-rise

Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are ready to hand Mohamed Salah a bumper pay-rise.

Goal reports Liverpool are guaranteed to offer their star man improved terms.

The Egyptian’s current Liverpool deal expires in the summer of 2023 and he is one of their highest earners with wages of around £200,000-a-week.

Jurgen Klopp opted to start Salah on the bench for Liverpool’s game at Crystal Palace at the weekend but insisted he was taking the opportunity to give the forward a much needed rest.

Salah was introduced on the hour mark and scored twice as the Reds beat Roy Hodgson’s side 7-0 at Selhurst Park.

  • Aboutrika: I called Salah – he’s ready to leave Liverpool

Aboutrika: I called Salah – he’s ready to leave Liverpool

Former Egypt teammate and good friend Mohamed Aboutrika says Mohamed Salah is ready to leave Liverpool this summer.

Salah recently opened the door to Real Madrid and Barcelona in an interview with AS, saying his future is in Liverpool’s hands.

Jurgen Klopp played down the striker’s comments, insisting everything is “fine” where Salah and Liverpool are concerned.

But Aboutrika, who knows Salah well, isn’t convinced.

“I called Salah about his situation at Liverpool and he is upset, but that would never affect his performance on the field,” Aboutrika told beIN Sports.

“I know that Salah is not happy in Liverpool, he told me the reasons why he is not happy but they are secrets and I cannot talk about it in public.

“One of the reasons that made Salah angry was that he was not the captain against Midtjylland.”

He added: “If Salah was a player at Real Madrid or Barcelona, and playing at the same level as Liverpool, he would’ve won the Ballon d’Or, and it is normal for a Spanish newspaper to ask Salah about Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“In my opinion, Liverpool are considering selling Salah for economic purposes.

“I do not have any influence over Salah’s decisions, he is my friend and brother, and he is smart enough to know what is best for him.”

  • Salah rescues Liverpool in Fulham draw

Salah rescues Liverpool in Fulham draw

Mohamed Salah spared Liverpool’s blushes as the Egyptian’s late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw against struggling Fulham on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were punished for a sloppy first-half display at Craven Cottage when Bobby Decordova-Reid gave Fulham a shock lead.

But Salah rescued the Premier League champions after Aboubakar Kamara handled with 11 minutes left.

Liverpool remain in second place and sit behind leaders Tottenham on goal difference.

Crystal Palace’s late equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Tottenham just before Liverpool kicked off had given the Reds a chance to go top if they won in west London.

Instead, they will have to wait until Wednesday’s summit meeting with Tottenham at Anfield for their next chance to knock Jose Mourinho’s team out of pole position.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight league games, but they were far from their fluent best and are winless in their past five away league matches.

Adding to Klopp’s concerns, Joel Matip suffered a back injury that saw him join the long list of Liverpool injuries which already included his fellow centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Klopp’s pre-match admission that Diogo Jota will be sidelined for up to eight weeks with a knee injury leaves the Reds boss relying on Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to lead the attack throughout the hectic Christmas and New Year period.

Fulham have just two wins in their last 11 games in all competitions, but this spirited effort showed Scott Parker’s fourth-bottom side are capable of avoiding relegation.

Klopp had warned his players not to underestimate Fulham as they look ahead to the Tottenham game, but their erratic performance suggested they hadn’t been listening closely.

With coronavirus restrictions eased in London, it was the first time Fulham had been able to have fans in their stadium since last season’s promotion.

Ivan Cavaleiro almost gave those 2,000 supporters the perfect welcome back when his stinging strike was parried away by Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker in the fourth minute.

Cavaleiro threatened again when his well-timed run beat the Liverpool offside trap, but his low shot was superbly saved by Alisson.

Liverpool had a penalty scare when Fabinho’s sliding challenge on Cavaleiro went to a VAR review, but referee Andre Marriner opted not to award a spot-kick after consulting the pitchside monitor.

Fulham were frustrated by that decision but they kept up the pressure and Ademola Lookman’s 20-yard drive forced another good save from Alisson.

Even Alisson had no answer when Fulham finally got the goal their dominance deserved in the 25th minute.

Salah surrendered possession after a shove on the Egyptian went unpunished on the edge of the Liverpool area.

Lookman clipped the ball through to Decordova-Reid and the winger smashed an unstoppable strike past Alisson into the far corner.

Mane should have done better than head wastefully over from Curtis Jones’ cross before Salah swivelled to fire just wide from close-range.

Matip’s back injury forced the Liverpool defender off at half-time, with Japan forward Takumi Minamino sent on and midfielder Jordan Henderson moving to centre-back.

Cavaleiro got through Liverpool’s reshuffled rearguard with ease after a mistake by Andrew Robertson, forcing Alisson to save his prodded effort.

With Fulham defending deeper as the half wore on, Henderson was able to get forward and he drew a fine save from Alphonse Areola after running onto Firmino’s pass.

Liverpool dominated the closing stages and equalised in the 79th minute when Kamara blocked Georginio Wijnaldum’s free-kick with his arm.

Salah’s penalty wasn’t well struck, but it still crept under Areola’s weak attempted save for his 13th goal of the season.

  • Salah breaks Liverpool Champions League record

Salah breaks Liverpool Champions League record

Mohamed Salah has the “numbers to prove” he is an “exceptional player”, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after the Egyptian became the club’s record Champions League goalscorer in their draw at Midtjylland.

Klopp’s men were already assured of top spot in Group D coming into the game and they began in perfect fashion when forward Salah ran clear and poked home after just 55 seconds.

It was the quickest goal the team had scored in the Champions League and on a night of numerous records for the much-changed visitors, Salah’s strike was his 22nd in the competition, surpassing club legend Steven Gerrard.

“Exceptional player, absolutely exceptional player,” Klopp said of Salah. “Since we [have] worked together obviously a lot of things [have] clicked really for all of us.

“He helps the team massively and he knows and appreciates the help of the team as well. If we only had Mo, even the incredible number of goals he got would not have been enough to be as successful as we were, so thank God others scored a lot of goals as well.

“That made this team pretty successful but Mo is a very exceptional player – I think nobody doubted it, but if you need numbers to prove it then he delivers that as well.”

Summer signing Diogo Jota forced Midtjylland goalkeeper Jesper Hansen into smart saves via a flicked effort and another drive from the angle, while Divock Origi side-footed wide from an unmarked position.

Evander rattled the crossbar with a thunderous strike as the hosts piled on the pressure in the second half and they claimed a deserved point through Alexander Scholz’s confident penalty.

Serie A side Atalanta clinched second place in the group with a 1-0 win at Ajax, who drop into the Europa League, while Danish champions Midtjylland finish bottom.

Salah return to Liverpool, available for Atalanta clash

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is back in training and could face Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old missed Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester after testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

But he has since tested negative and took part in training on Monday.

Liverpool have a 100% record in this season’s Champions League and will reach the last 16 if they beat their Serie A opponents.

  • Salah, Elneny test positive for COVID-19 again

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny have returned another positive test for COVID-19, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Wednesday.

Salah had previously tested positive for the coronavirus last Friday, on the eve of Egypt’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Togo, while Elneny tested positive three days later.

Salah, who is the joint leading scorer in the English Premier League (EPL) this season with eight goals, will miss the visit from league leaders Leicester City on Sunday.

He is also likely to be ruled out of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League game against Atalanta next Wednesday.

Elneny is expected to miss Arsenal’s trip to Leeds United on Sunday and their Europa League clash at Molde on Nov 26.

Mohamed Salah sent message to Egypt teammates

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah sent a message to his Egypt teammates as he self-isolates.

Egypt beat Togo 1-0 thanks to Mahmoud Hamdy El-Wensh’s second-half header, which proved to be enough for the Pharaohs to claim their first win in Group G of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.

Egypt boss El-Badry was pleased with the result after a difficult preparation period, in which Salah tested positive for coronavirus, which was confirmed by Egypt FA on Friday.

El-Badry said: “It’s an important win that comes after a very difficult period in terms of preparation before the game.

“We were better in the first half, had a good shape and created a number of chances but the players were physically tired in the second half.

“Salah sent us a message before the game saying he is confident we will beat Togo, and thankfully we did today. I dedicate this win to all Egyptian fans and Salah.”

  • Mo Salah praised after saving homeless man

Mo Salah praised after saving homeless man

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s has been described as a “real-life hero” after stepping in to stop the abuse of a homeless man near Anfield.

In late September, Salah pulled up to a petrol station in Liverpool and noticed a homeless man, David Craig, being verbally harassed by a small group.

Not liking what he saw, the Egyptian star intervened, warned the abusers that they could one day face a similar fate and handed the homeless man some money.

The gesture, which was caught on CCTV, clearly meant a lot to the man in question, who has now paid tribute to Salah for stepping in on his behalf when many others wouldn’t have.

“Mo was every bit as wonderful as he is for Liverpool on the pitch,” Mr Craig was quoted by The Sun.

“He heard what a group of lads were saying to me, then turned to them and said, ‘That could be you in a few years’. I only knew I wasn’t hallucinating when Mo incredibly handed me £100. What a complete legend.

“Mo had seen a couple of the lads hassling me. They were calling me names, asking why I was begging and telling me to get a job.

“He saw what was happening and said something to them and then he went to the cash machine. I was more than chuffed. I’m a massive fan.

“Mo is a real-life hero in my eyes and I want to thank him.”
