EPL: Salah gets hat-trick as liverpool beat Leeds

A Mohamed Salah hat-trick ensured Liverpool got their Premier League title defence off to a winning start in an exhilarating contest with Leeds United.

On three separate occasions the champions were pegged back by their effervescent opponents, but each time they found a way to restore the lead.

And, while Jurgen Klopp will not be happy with several facets of his team’s performance, the spirit that has brought four trophies to Anfield over the last two seasons was fully on show.

Marcelo Bielsa, meanwhile, will reflect on an encouraging showing from his team on their return to the top-flight.

Throughout the build-up to the new campaign, Klopp had called for his players to “attack” what would typically be described as a title defence.

And the Reds delivered, penning Leeds in from the first whistle before winning a penalty when Robin Koch handled Salah’s shot, allowing the Egyptian to convert emphatically from 12 yards.

Rather than dent their confidence, though, the early blow of conceding only seemed to free the visitors of any nerves, encouraging them to play with trademark aggression.

Just moments after Helder Costa had a goal ruled out for offside and Pablo Hernandez had almost teed up Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison netted a deserved equaliser in memorable fashion.

Controlling a cross-field pass to the left first time, the Englishman drove inside past both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez before dispatching a low shot into the near side of the net.

Liverpool’s response was swift, Virgil van Dijk heading in from a corner despite goalkeeper Illan Meslier getting his body behind the attempt.

But again Leeds fought back, a poor attempted clearance from Van Dijk resulting in him feeding Patrick Bamford to force the ball beyond Alisson Becker.

And so the champions were forced to strike again, with Salah grabbing his second with a powerful finish after the ball dropped into his path at the back post from a corner.

The Reds missed a series of golden opportunities to severely dent the visitors’ resistance either side of the break, well-worked counters ending without the deserved finish.

And, as is so often the case in football, that profligacy was eventually punished with an opposition goal.

With just over an hour gone, Mateusz Klich produced a fine control and finish from a bouncing cross to register the sixth goal of a thrilling game.

Inevitably, the chances didn’t stop there, and Liverpool thought they had got their noses in front when Van Dijk smashed home from a corner only for a foul from substitute Curtis Jones to see it become the fourth disallowed goal of the game.

But the champions wouldn’t be denied, and as they piled the pressure on the Leeds box late on, substitute Rodrigo dangled out a lazy leg to catch Fabinho and give away a penalty.

Salah did the rest, capping an unforgettable season opener with a treble that guaranteed all three points for the reigning champions.

EPL: Salah targets long stay, more titles at Liverpool

Liverpool Forward Mohamed Salah says he wants to remain with the Premier League Champions for a long time, as the team has developed a perfect understanding.

The Egypt international, who signed a new five-year deal in 2018, was the top scorer at the club this season with 17 Premier League goals, as they secured a 19th top-flight title with seven games to spare.

“I’m very happy; I can’t describe my feelings after we won the league after 30 years. I can see people’s joy and this is so important for all of us,” Salah told BeIN Sport.

“I enjoy the atmosphere here; I love this place and I hope to stay for a long time. The atmosphere here is different to any other place.

“We have adapted well as a team and our understanding is perfect. If this continues, we can achieve more.

“It’s difficult to maintain our current level but it’s not impossible,” he said.

Salah hailed the impact of Club Captain Jordan Henderson and said he would pick the midfielder as the best player in the league this season.

“Maybe I’ll choose Henderson because he’s the captain and he’s been here for about eight-nine years.

“He had a difficult time in the beginning and he was heavily criticised.

“He, as a captain, is loved by all of us and he tries to help all players and helps youth players to adapt,” he said.

Liverpool visit second-placed Manchester City in the league on Thursday.

  • Messi better team player than Salah – Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger has described Barcelona forward Lionel Messi as a complete player who though constantly desires to score but recognises when to allow others do the finishing.

Wenger who has been out of job since quitting Arsenal last year after 22 years at the Emirates, was reacting to misunderstanding between Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah after their 3-0 defeat of Burnley last weekend.

Salah was involved in a spat with team-mate Sadio Mane in the Reds’ 3-0 win at Burnley, with the Senegal forward furious at his Egyptian team-mate for failing to pass the ball to him to apply a simple tap-in late on.

Mane was substituted moments later and could not hide his anger over the incident on the touchline as he departed the field.

Wenger while describing the two feuding players as great players nonetheless criticised Salah for being too selfish in attack.

The former AS Monaco handler said though the Egypt international has the abilities of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, he unlike Messi, insists on doing the finishing at all times.

‘He [Salah] has similarities with Messi,’ Wenger told beIN Sports. ‘He must find the consistency of Messi.

‘I find he’s a good finisher but Messi has the complete thing, he gives the final ball as well. ‘Salah is a bit obsessed with finishing himself.

‘That’s a dimension he’ll get certainly, when he grows a little bit older, to find the moment when you have to give the ball and when you have to finish. ‘But I like him very much, he has huge potential. Mane as well,” he submitted

Liverpool who have won all their premier league matches played so far in the new season will next host Newcastle in a tie they have been tipped to win to make it five wins in five matches.

Salah late strike sends Liverpool top of Premier League

Mohamed Salah scored a brilliant solo goal as Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton at St Mary’s and return to the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool were in danger of dropping vital points with the score level at 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining, before Salah clinically ended his run of six league games without a goal.

With Southampton defenders backing off, the Egyptian ran half the length of the pitch before firing past Angus Gunn with his left foot.

Liverpool substitute Jordan Henderson sealed victory late on with a close-range finish.

Shane Long had handed Saints an early lead with a composed strike from inside the area but Naby Keita headed the visitors level with his first goal for the club before the break.

The result sees Liverpool leapfrog Manchester City yet again – the 25th time the lead has changed hands this season, the joint second-highest number in the English top flight in the post-World War Two era.

The Red have a two-point gap at the top, although defending champions City have a game in hand with six matches left to play.

Southampton remain in 16th place, just five points above the relegation zone.

  • Again, Salah wins BBC African Footballer of the Year award

Again, Salah wins BBC African Footballer of the Year award

Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row, BBC Sport reports.

The 26-year-old beat Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Thomas Partey to the prize. The Premier League’s player of the year scored 44 goals in 52 games for Liverpool last season.

It’s a great feeling to win again. I’m happy and I would like to win it also next year!” said Salah.

As well as inspiring his club to the Champions League final, Salah scored twice for Egypt at this year’s World Cup, having netted both goals in the match which took his country to the tournament for the first time since 1990.

There have been many good moments in 2018,” he added. “The game against Roma at Anfield (Champions League semi-final first leg) was unbelievable. I’m scoring goals and helping the team to get the points to be top of the league. That’s always a great feeling.”

Salah said his aim for 2019 is “to win something with the club so everyone is excited”.

I try to push myself every day to help the team win something,” he added.

The BBC received more than 650,000 votes this year – a record for the award.

Salah becomes the first player since Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha to win in consecutive years.

The former Chelsea player signed for the Reds from Roma in the summer of 2017. He scored 15 goals and made 11 others for the Italian side in 2016-17 as they finished second in Serie A, their best league placing for seven years.

In a phenomenal start to his Liverpool career, Salah scored 19 goals in his first 24 appearances. He went on to beat the previous record of 31 goals in a 38-game Premier League season shared by Luis Suarez for the Reds in 2013/14, Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in 2007/08 and Alan Shearer for Newcastle in 1995/96.

Mohamed Barakat (2005) and Mohamed Aboutrika (2008) are the other Egyptians to have won the award.

  • Salah fit for Arsenal trip in spite of arm injury, Klopp assures

Salah fit for Arsenal trip in spite of arm injury, Klopp assures

Juergen Klopp expects forward Mohamed Salah to be ready for Liverpool’s trip to Arsenal in spite of a wrist injury, but midfielders Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita are both ruled out.

Salah was seen training with a protective cast on his forearm this week, but Klopp dismissed any fresh injury concern relating to the Egyptian.

“Mo, it is nothing really serious — it’s a kind of inflammation of the tendon,” Klopp told a news conference on Friday. “That’s pretty much all.

“It (the support) was only for protection — the pictures you saw were only protection and it has no influence.”

Henderson and Keita remain on the sidelines with hamstring injuries and will not be available for the clash at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The pair are also a doubt for the UEFA Champions League trip to Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday.

“Hendo feels really good, but it will be probably the start of the week when he will be back in training,” Klopp added.

“Naby, end of this week. It doesn’t make a big difference match-wise, but that’s how it looks.”

Klopp is yet to suffer defeat against Arsenal since arriving at Anfield, claiming 11 points out of 15 against the north London outfit in the league.

However, the German expects a difficult game against an Arsenal side rejuvenated under new manager Unai Emery and on an eight-match unbeaten run in the English Premier League.

Klopp suggested the departure of long-standing manager Arsene Wenger at the end of last season forced some of the Arsenal players “out of their comfort zone”.

He said this sent them back to delivering the goods on the pitch.

“Arsene Wenger is one of the best managers in the world, there’s no doubt about it. And sometimes after a long time when the mood in a club changes, it’s quite difficult to work against that,” said Klopp.

“If a new manager comes in — it was the same with me here — all players are immediately out of their comfort zone.

“They all have to prove from the first day that they are not only the name, they are the footballer as well.”

  • Salah returns to Liverpool after limping out of Egypt qualifier

Mohamed Salah has returned to Liverpool after he was injured during Egypt’s 4-1 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win over eSwatini on Friday.

The 26-year-old forward put Egypt 4-0 up shortly before half-time, scoring direct from a corner.
Salah, who scored 44 times for Liverpool last season but is without a goal in his past four club appearances, later limped off with a muscle strain.
The Reds’ next game is at Huddersfield on Saturday, 20 October.
Egypt assistant coach Hany Ramzy told Bein Sports: “The initial diagnosis, according to the team doctor, is a strong muscle strain. It is not a tear. I think it is not serious.”

  • RM 3-1 LIV [updated]: Liverpool troubled as injured Salah leaves Champions League final

MO SALAH broke down in tears after being hauled off due to an injury just half an hour into the Champions League final.

The Egyptian star hurt his shoulder in a clash with Sergio Ramos and tried to play on in Kiev.

But he hit the turf a few minutes later after realising his night was over.

He has been Liverpool’s main man this season, scoring 44 goals in all competitions to help Liverpool to the final.

  • Ronaldo says Salah is like Messi

Former Real Madrid striker Ronaldo has praised Mohamed Salah as “incredible”, comparing the Liverpool star to Lionel Messi.

Salah, 25, has starred this season with 44 goals in all competitions in his first campaign with the Premier League giants.

The Egypt international shapes as being crucial if Liverpool are to upset Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev Saturday.

Brazil great Ronaldo has been impressed by Salah, saying the forward was similar to Barcelona superstar Messi.

“Salah, I love him. He is an incredible player with a tremendous quality,” he told El Partidazo de COPE.

“He looks like Messi. I recently read him saying that I had been his inspiration and I was excited.”

Despite Salah’s performances, Madrid are favourites for the Champions League final as they look to win the crown for the third straight time and fourth in five seasons.

Ronaldo believes his former club will overcome Liverpool in a high-scoring encounter.

“My result is 3-2 for Madrid,” he said.

“If they win the final it will be an unprecedented event in their history. I am very optimistic.

“There were doubts during the year, but Real Madrid came together and have achieved something historic.”
