  • Coutinho and Salah ruled out of FA Cup derby

Coutinho and Salah ruled out of FA Cup derby

Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho will miss Friday’s FA Cup third-round derby with Everton with a thigh injury, boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Reds are braced for another Barcelona attempt to sign the Brazil player, 25, BBC Sport has learned.

He also missed the recent win over Burnley but Klopp said: “I have nothing to say about it. All the things I could say now will only create stories.”

Top scorer Mohamed Salah will also miss the match through injury.

Liverpool rejected three offers for Coutinho, and a transfer request from the Brazilian, before the start of this season.

Liverpool have refused to be drawn into any public debate over Coutinho’s future and Klopp maintained that stance at his pre-match news conference on Thursday.

“I opened the door halfway because I mentioned it was the transfer window but there is nothing I can say about it which would help me, the player or the club.

“Maybe 80% of the cameras are here for these answers – that’s a waste of time then.”

He added that he expected Coutinho to be “available for the Manchester City game on 14 January”.

The Reds’ home tie with Everton, which kicks off at 19:55 GMT, is live on BBC One and the BBC Sport website and app.

Klopp also confirmed £75m defender Virgil van Dijk could make his debut.

“Mo and Phil are not available. Virgil is obviously healthy, we’ll see what we do with him,” the manager

  • Klopp praises Reds recovery as Salah inspires comeback win over Leicester

Manager Jurgen Klopp called Liverpool’s reaction to going a goal down against Leicester the “best I’ve ever seen” after Mohamed Salah’s double helped them come from behind to win at Anfield.

Jamie Vardy gave the visitors an early lead when he poked home from a Riyad Mahrez pass before Salah equalised in the second half.

The Egypt international then turned Harry Maguire on the edge of the area before firing in his second of the day – and 17th Premier League goal of the season – to give Liverpool the lead.

Klopp described the hosts’ performance as “perfect” and the Reds, who will finish the year in fourth place, extended their unbeaten run to 15 games.

Leicester stay in eighth but have now gone five games without a victory.

“On perfect days we win football games,” said Klopp.

“The crowd were unbelievable and we needed them today to score these two goals. It’s a good team performance and a well-deserved win.”

The only concern will surround the fitness of match-winner Salah, who Klopp said was “limping” when he was substituted with less than 10 minutes left to play.

“We have to check it,” added the German. “We tried to change it as quick as possible and of course that is not too good.”

  • Salah double gives Liverpool win over Leicester

Mohamed Salah’s double helped Liverpool extend their unbeaten run to 15 games in all competitions with victory against Leicester at Anfield.

Jamie Vardy gave the visitors an early lead when he poked home a Riyad Mahrez pass across the box before Salah equalised in the second half.

The Egypt international then turned Harry Maguire on the edge of the area before firing in his second of the day – and 17th Premier League goal of the season – to give Liverpool the lead.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds will finish the year in fourth place. Leicester remain in eighth but have now gone six games without a win.

  • Breaking: Mohamed Salah named BBC African Footballer of the Year

Egyptian Mohamed Salah has been voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for 2017.

Following a record number of votes, the Liverpool star won ahead of Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinean Naby Keita, Sadio Mane of Senegal and Nigeria’s Victor Moses.

“I am very happy to win this award,” the 25-year-old told BBC Sport.

“It’s always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I’m very happy.”

Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer with 13 goals, has enjoyed a stellar year for both club and country.

In early 2017, the forward was the central figure for Egypt as they finished runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He also had a hand in all seven of the goals that took the Pharaohs to their first World Cup since 1990 – assisting two and scoring five, including the stoppage-time penalty against Congo that qualified them for Russia.

“I want to be the best Egyptian ever so I work hard,” added Salah, who is the third player from Egypt to win the award and first since 2008.

“I always follow my own way and I want everyone in Egypt to follow my way.”

Salah’s form at club level as been every bit as impressive as it has in internationals.

In Italy, he scored 15 goals and made 11 others as he helped Roma finish second in Serie A, their best league placing in seven years, prior to joining Liverpool and scoring 13 times in his first 16 league games.

“I would like to thank my Liverpool team-mates and I also had a good season with Roma so I have to thank my team-mates there and my team-mates in the national team,” said Salah.

“Since I came here, I wanted to work hard and show everyone my football. I wanted to come back to the Premier League since I left, so I am very happy.”

Salah has taken the Premier League by storm this season, in contrast to a less impressive spell in the division with Chelsea between 2014-15.

“It’s well-deserved,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who handed the trophy to the player at the club’s Melwood training academy.

“I am a really lucky person. I had the opportunity to work with a few outstanding players and I am happy that it is now with Mo.

“The good thing is that he is still young, there is a lot of space for improvement, a lot of potential still that we can work on, but that’s how it should be. It’s a big pleasure, to be honest, to work with him.”

By winning the BBC African Footballer of the year prize Salah adds his name to a list of legends including Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) and Michael Essien (Ghana).

“I am very happy to be like them in winning this award,” said Salah, who follows compatriots Mohamed Barakat (2005) and Mohamed Aboutrika(2008) in receiving the trophy.
