EPL: Allardyce attacks Klopp, Ten Hag over time-wasting tactics

Leeds United manager, Sam Allardyce, has verbally attacked Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp and Manchester United counterpart Erik ten Hag, saying that that they are as guilty as the rest when it comes to time-wasting tactics.

The debate over time-wasting and how many minutes the ball really spends in play has been a scorching topic across the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United have been the most criticized over this act as they continue to strive to secure a UEFA Champions League placement for next season.

Also, Klopp, Ten Hag and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta are among those to have directly flagged up their concerns on the issue.

However, Allardyce has now defended his old club Newcastle,

Speaking on the development, Allardyce said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Leeds’ Premier League tie with Newcastle United on Saturday: “Who doesn’t do it? Who complained?”

When the reporter name dropped “Klopp and Ten Hag”, Allardyce responded: “Well, he [Klopp] wastes time. He [Ten Hag] wastes time as well.”

Allardyce continued: “They all waste time in the last five minutes if they are winning 2-1. Don’t be daft.”

He added, “Rubbish, that is. We’ve been talking about the ball in play, rather than time-wasting, and whether the ball in play can be improved, but the game is ferocious and quick enough as it is.”

Jurgen Klopp always thinks he’s right – Sam Allardyce

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce took a swipe at Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp after Sunday’s dramatics.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson scored header in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory and boost the Reds’ hopes of securing Champions League football.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Allardyce said: “You know Jurgen, he always thinks he’s right doesn’t he? He’s always right so maybe I am today.

“He’s a lucky man tonight and he knows it.”

Allardyce was especially livid that Kyle Bartley had a goal disallowed as Matt Phillips was deemed to be offside as he was obstructing Alisson’s view.

Allardyce said: ‘There’s no way with Matt Phillips in front of the goalie or not that goalkeeper would have saved that ball (Bartley’s disallowed goal).’

EPL: West Brom coach names major Chelsea weakness

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce has identified a key weakness in Chelsea after Saturday’s win.

The Baggies inflicted a first defeat in Thomas Tuchel since his arrival in the Premier League back in January.

And they did so in some fashion, smashing the Blues 5-2 at Stamford Bridge with two goals each from Mattheus Pereira and Callum Robinson.

Allardyce has named Edouard Mendy as the weak link in the Blues side, insisting the former Rennes star was “rash”.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Allardyce said: “Letting them play out from the back for the goalkeeper would be a mistake.

“That may have been a tactic we used later in the game but if it works try and keep doing it for as long as possible.

“That’s why we played two split up front with Mateus Pereira and Mbaye Diagne. The press worked very, very well and there is something with their goalkeeper, who can be rash, he can rush out.

“If you saw the first goal we scored, he came dashing to the edge of his box and didn’t get anywhere near.

“We felt every time we went back to the goal and we put him under pressure that gave us good opportunities.

“Obviously you could say the sending off helped, playing against ten men, but you’ve got to beat what’s still a very good side.”

‘He’s a person of interest’ – Sam Allardyce on Ahmed Musa

West Brom manager, Sam Allardyce, has confirmed that former Leicester City winger, Ahmed Musa, is set for a trial with his squad before the January transfer window’s closure next week.

Allardyce said that West Brom are interested in signing Musa this January transfer window.

According to him, he would alert everybody when the Nigerian captain arrives in England this week.

Allardyce said this on Monday during his pre-match press conference ahead of West Brom’s Premier League clash with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Providing an update on Musa, Allardyce said, “He’s not here yet, so until he turns up.

“He’s a person of interest, and when he arrives, we will alert everybody and let them know.”

Musa, who is set for a short-term deal with West Brom, is a free agent after leaving Saudi side, Al-Nassr last year.

The 28-year-old has played in the Premier League before during his time at Leicester.

  • Allardyce to be quickly installed as West Brom manager

Allardyce to be quickly installed as West Brom manager

Sam Allardyce is an early favourite for the West Brom job.

WBA sacked manager Slaven Bilic this morning.

Albion battled to a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening, but that took their tally to just seven points as they lie in 19th place in the table.

Allardyce is poised to take over the Premier League strugglers on a short-term deal, and he could be in place for Sunday’s home clash with Aston Villa, says the Mirror.

Bilic had six months left to run on the two-year deal he signed in June 2019, with the Croatian guiding the Baggies back to the top-flight last season, when they clinched automatic promotion as runners-up behind Leeds United.

  • Arsenal: Stupid way of playing, Allardyce blasts Emery over loss

Former England boss, Sam Allardyce has laid into new Arsenal boss Unai Emery for having his side play out from the back against Manchester City.

Emery underwent a baptism of fire in the opening day weekend of the Premier League, facing off with the champions at the Emirates on Sunday.

The Gunners fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s charges, although it could have been a larger scoreline in favour of the visitors, who dominated proceedings throughout.

Well known for their high pressing game, City took Arsenal to task, and Allardyce has laid the blame squarely at Emery’s doorstep.

“It’s the manager’s fault,” the former England boss told Talksport . “Don’t ask someone to do against Manchester City what you shouldn’t do.

“What do Manchester City do? Press, press, press, so why do you try and play out [from the back]?

“Even the Arsenal crowd cheered when they dropped one in the opposition’s half!

“You cannot just force ‘the only way to play is this way’ in this country.

“We’re getting obsessed with this stupid ‘let’s play out from the back, split the centre-halfs either side of the 18-yard box and go and play from there’.

“It’s utter rubbish to play like that all the time.”

It was put to ‘Big Sam’ that City themselves took risks, with Guardiola’s preferred method of play also to build from the back, to which he replied:

“When you’re the best you can do it.”

  • Everton sack Sam Allardyce as manager

Everton Football Club can confirm that Sam Allardyce has left his role as manager, the club said in a statement on its website “www.evertonfc.com” on Wednesday.

Denise Barrett-Baxendale, deputy chief officer of the club said: “On behalf of the Chairman, Board of Directors and Moshiri , I would like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months.

“Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that.

“However, we have made the decision that as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer and will be commencing this process immediately.

“Again, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future,” the statement said.

Everton ended the season 8th on the Premier League log.

  • EPL: Liverpool held to a goalless draw in Merseyside derby

Liverpool were held to a drab goalless draw by Everton in a merseyside derby, the Premier League fixture sandwiched between their Champions League quarter-final ties against Manchester City.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made five changes from the 3-0 win over City in midweek, choosing not to risk Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah.

And, as the game wore on, he substituted midfielder James Milner and forward Sadio Mane, perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s second leg at Etihad Stadium.

The draw meant Liverpool missed the chance to move above Manchester United into second – they are a point behind their north west rivals, who have two games in hand.

In a largely subdued first half, both home goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the visitors’ Loris Karius were extended.

After the break, the only heated moments came when Wayne Rooney reacted angrily to being substituted, and Danny Ings and Seamus Coleman briefly clashed.

The hosts pushed hard for a winner late on, but missed four good chances as it finished honours even.

Everton, who stay ninth, have gone 15 league derbies without a win, going back to a 2-0 victory in October 2010.

Referee Michael Oliver did not book anyone, only the second time that has happened in a Merseyside derby in the Premier League.

During the post-match interviews with BBC Sport, both managers gave analysis and spoke on the outcome of the derby match.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce said while: “Dominating the last 15 minutes could have given us the opportunity to win it but we needed more legs.

“Wayne’s bound to be disappointed to be brought off in a Merseyside derby but I make the decisions and I thought we did the right thing to make those changes to give us a better chance”.

“I think when you finish the game as strongly as that and put Liverpool under pressure, you can say we’re unlucky”.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, said “A point is OK. Everton were always ready to fight but we didn’t give them the opportunity until the late stages. We stopped playing football and were a bit lucky. But that is what we have to take. I think it’s an absolutely deserved draw.

“For 75 minutes we were completely in charge. I am absolutely OK, it’s not the best day in my life, but let’s carry on. Now we have to focus immediately and be ready again on Tuesday, let’s fight for the next round.”
