  • NAF bombs Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa, kills more insurgents

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said on Friday it has carried out more air strikes against the Boko Haram terrorists in the Sambisa general area in Borno State, killing scores of insurgents and destroying their hideouts in the process.

The bombardment of the insurgents were conducted with four fighter jets and two helicopters after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions have been carried out on the target areas.

The Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, said the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole carried out the strikes in an operation code-named operation Ruwan Wuta III.

He explained in a statement supported with a declassified video footage that “on December 12, 20 17, the Air Task Force of OP LAFIYA DOLE commenced an intensive bombardment of the hideouts of Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) in Northern Borno and the Sambisa general area in an operation codenamed Operation Ruwan Wuta lll.

“On the first day of the operation, an air interdiction mission was conducted on a BHT hideout in Kolaram, which is 37km East of Monguno.”

According to AVM Adesanya, “Previous Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions by NAF platforms had revealed Kolaram to be an active BHT location from where the terrorists had launched attacks on our surface forces in Northern Borno.

“Accordingly, two NAF helicopters were detailed for a pre-dawn attack on the settlement, followed by another wave of attacks from four fighter aircraft.

“Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) showed that several structures were destroyed, causing fire within the settlement while some insurgents were killed in the process.

“On the same day, one NAF helicopter and some fighter aircraft attacked an adjoining settlement Southeast of Kolaram, targeting structures that had been observed to host significant BHT activities. The targeted BHT structures were destroyed and engulfed in fire, killing the terrorists hiding in them.

“During the attacks on Kolaram and Southeast of Kolaram, some escaping insurgents were tracked as they fled northwards to Jubilaram, which is 38km Northeast of Monguno.

” Accordingly, another wave of air interdiction was launched on the location, which was also found to be active with BHT activities. Four NAF fighter aircraft took turns to attack structures occupied by BHT elements in the settlement.

“Subsequent BDA revealed that the attacks resulted in a large part of the settlement being engulfed in fire, thereby destroying the BHTs structures and neutralizing the fleeing BHTs.”

  • I’ll return to fight Boko Haram in Sambisa after treatment – Injured soldier vows

An army private, Samuel Ernest, who is recuperating from an injury at the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital, Maiduguri, says he go back to the frontline to continue the fight against the terrorists.

After my treatment, if I am fit enough, I will go back to the bush – frontline, in order to continue the operation against the Boko Haram terrorists.

I am feeling better now, I can now use crochets and put my feet down,’’ Ernest told journalists at a get-together organised for wounded soldiers to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir.

He said he was proud of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, and the army high command that identified with the injured during the occasion.

I feel happy celebrating the Sallah, the chief of army staff came to the hospital to see how we are faring and how we are being taken care of,” Ernest, who sustained his injury six months ago, said.

Similarly, another private, Titus Okon, who is also recuperating from injury on one of his laps after he was shot by the terrorists on May 21, expressed gratitude to God that he was getting better.

I am strong enough, I am very grateful to the chief of army staff who is here to celebrate with us,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the soldiers later took to the dancing floor to celebrate the occasion.

This was after the representative of the chief of army staff, David Ahmadu, the Chief of Training and Operations, assured them that the army was committed to their welfare.

At Mafa, a staff sergeant of the 112 Task Force Battalion, Saleh Jerico, expressed gratitude to God that there were fewer threats to troops now than in previous years.

Compared to two or three years ago, nobody could come here. We give glory to God for his intervention.

Peace is being restored to Borno and entire North East. Our earnest prayer is that God should sustain the peace.

It is great for us — the troops — to witness the 2017 Sallah celebration,” Mr. Jerico said after he took part in a lunch organised by the chief of army staff for troops.

Also, a lance corporal, Adamu Ali, of the same battalion noted that Eid-el-Kabir celebration in Mafa in 2017 was better than 2016 in terms of security and peace.

In 2016, here in Mafa, we were being ambushed by the terrorists, but there is nothing as such this year, we thank God for that.

I wish my family happy Sallah. As they celebrate at home, we are also celebrating here in the frontline in Mafa.

It is not my will to stay away from them, it is the nature of the job,” Ali said and expressed readiness to continue with the ongoing clearance operation.

  • Zero forest of Sambisa and the continuous reign of Shekau – Godwin Etakibuebu

    By Godwin Etakibuebu

Too many things happened in the last few days that seem to be casting doubt over the professional and operational integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Yes, the hard-earned reputation of our cherished armed forces in the environment of hostilities has suddenly taken unbelievable nose-diving into what looks; to us the “bloody civilians” at least, abyss of opprobrium. Mentioning just a few of those happening would suffice here. By the way, it is all about this Boko Haram war.

The American government, through its State Department, a few days ago, rated the efficiency of the Nigerian Army in the war against Boko Haram very low. The Yankee specifically pointed out the inability of the Nigerian Army to hold down effectively areas recovered from the insurgents as responsible for recent escalation of hostility. The stand of the American is that the “Nigerian Military is not doing enough to hold onto territories recaptured from Boko Haram terrorists despite the successes recorded by the Multi-National Joint Task Force”.

The colour of the Nigerian Army painted by the American authority on this subject matter is that of an inefficient army. This did not go down well with our military. Of course, it is not expected that the Nigerian Army should throw a celebration party heralding the American analytical statement of fact. We should accept that America knows exactly what it is saying concerning this Boko Haram thing because that country [America] pays very heavily to the sustenance and maintenance of the multi-national force. He, who pays the piper ought to be dictating the tune, is a popular saying.

The American’s evaluation report however coincided with the Acting President’s marching order to the head of the Nigerian Army and Air-force to move their high command back to the theatre of war in Maiduguri. In issuing that order the Acting President would have recognised the continued decline of the Nigerian Military ability in holding effectively what it had gained initially. Such decline of authority in command of the Nigerian military over Boko Haram; a terrorist organisation declared to have been tactically defeated by President Muhammadu Buhari some months back, is not lost on many watchers of events, both within and without Nigeria. All we can feel this time is that the camp of the insurgents is gaining power and once again dictating the pace of action to our gallant military, which is not supposed to be.

Perhaps, the most disturbing thing about this war against Boko Haram is exact facts about the person of Abubakar Shekau; the dreaded leader of the sect. Who is he? Is he alive or dead? We don’t know where to get facts about this man with “nine lives” from. The Nigerian Military that has engaged this man in this bloody war, which has gone on for years may not have even known the man. It means we shall remain in the terrain of illusion continuously if we are expecting facts concerning the man from the same military because it is what it [the Nigerian military] has that it can give. I am not being pessimistic for no reason. Let me just establish it quickly the number of times the Nigeria military told us about the death of Abubakar Shekau.

In 2009, Shekau was reportedly killed, with some one hundred Boko Haram members, who included a key Financer of the group; Alhaji Buji Foi, only for the man to resurfaced in July, 2010 in a video clip. In 2011, the same man was reported killed in a Kano neighbourhood “after an exchange of fire”.

In 2013, Shekau was reported to “may have died between July 25 and August 3 in a battle in the Sambisa forest which was very fierce on July 30”. The statement made public from the JTF said, “Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide, a border community in Cameroon for treatment from which he never recovered”. But on August 4, 2013, a day after Shekau was reported to have been killed, members of the Sect launched a ferocious attack on two military camps in Mallam Fatori border village and shortly thereafter, a video of Shekau, boasting was released.

In 2014, both the Nigerian and Cameroonian authorities provided video evidence that a Boko Haram Commander by name Bashir Muhammad who “doubled” as Shekau and took up the mantle of leadership after the real Shekau died in 2013 was killed in Konduga in Borno State. There was tough argument between Nigeria and Cameroon about the authenticity of who actually killed the Shekau and the place he was killed

On September 24, 2014, the Nigerian Army claimed it killed Shekau during a raid on Konduga on September 17 while photos of Shekau [dead] were made public by the Cameroonian authority, claiming it killed him “during a cross-border raid deep inside Nigeria by its military”. However, Shekau resurfaced a few days later saying, “here l am
alive. I will only die the day Allah takes my breath”.

In 2016, report surfaced from the Nigerian military on Tuesday, August 23, that Shekau was “fatally wounded during unprecedented and spectaclar air-raid. Those Boko Haram terrorists commanders confirmed dead include Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman, while their leader; the so-called Abubakar Shekau, is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders. Several other terrorists were also wounded”. This statement was credited to the Army Spokesman; Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman [now Brigadier General SK Usman].

So, when the Chief of Army Staff gave order to his men and officers a few days ago to “get Shekau dead or alive within 30 days” the question of “which Abubakar Shekau” became too confronting to all to avoid.

By the time Sambisa Forest; declared “Zero Camp” by the Military, with Shekau Caliphate’s flag and abandoned Koran, alleged to have been captured from the defeated Forest [items presented to the Commander-in-Chief as spoils of war in a very elaborative ceremony in Abuja] is added to the Shekau mystic life, the Nigerian Armed Forces will have lots of explanations for Nigerians about the truth of this war against Boko Haram.
For now, Abubakar Shekau reign of terrorism continues in a possible Sambisa Forest of evil that has not been liberated. It is sad indeed. Yes, it sad!

Godwin Etakibuebu, a veteran journalist, wrote in from Lagos.

  • Video: Boko Haram showcases everyday life in Sambisa, vows to fight on

Video: Boko Haram showcases everyday life in Sambisa, vows to fight on

Boko Haram sect has released a new video, vowing to sustain the battle with the country.

The deadly group highlights the everyday life of their members in the 29-minute video which was said to have been shot in Sambisa forest.

Recall TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published certain reports detailing that the insurgents have found their way back to Sambisa forest, despite several claims from the federal government which insinuates that the area has been captured by the Nigeria military.

In fact, Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff, supposedly held the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship in Sambisa forest to consolidate the army’s grip on the area.

In this latest video, the sect captured some of the daily activities of the group – how they process some of their foods, buy commodities and showcased armed members of the sect rode on motorcycles, while some were some were seen taking training on gun handling.

One of the Boko Haram members who spoke in Kanuri dialect disputed the claim of the military that the group had been defeated. He said the militants have been living well in the forest.“You can see that we are doing well and living fine. Look at our crops, they are growing well,” he said.

  • Air Force bombs Boko Haram insurgents regrouping in Sambisa

Air Force bombs Boko Haram insurgents regrouping in Sambisa

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Wednesday said it had frustrated efforts of the Boko Haram insurgents to regroup.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, said this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

Adesanya said component of Operation “LAFIYA DOLE” conducted an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission of the Sambisa general area, the former spiritual headquarters of the insurgents.

He said during the ISR mission, a gradual convergence of insurgents elements at some buildings in Alagarno Camp one was noticed.

“The sight of several solar panels on the rooftops of the buildings, and the obvious attempt to conceal the buildings, gave out the plans of the terrorists.

“A confirmatory ISR mission indicated that the structures were most likely a budding Command and Control facility, which could also house High Value Targets.

“Accordingly, on July 3, the Air Component detailed 3 aircraft namely, 2 Alpha Jet and one F-7Ni aircraft, to conduct Air Interdiction strikes on the buildings in succession.

“Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed that the structures with the solar panels as well as other adjoining structures were damaged,” he said.

Adesanya said further that suspected insurgents technical vehicle, which was attempting to make a run from the vicinity was struck by subsequent waves of attack.

  • Boko Haram insurgents relocating from Sambisa to Taraba forest, says Gov Ishaku

Boko Haram insurgents relocating from Sambisa to Taraba forest, says Gov Ishaku

Taraba State governor, Darius Ishaku on Thursday said fleeing Boko Haram members have relocated from Sambisa forest in Borno state to Suntai Daaji forest in the state.

Ishaku made this known when the general officer commanding (GOC) of 82 army division, Enugu, Major Gen. Adamu Abubakar, paid him a courtesy visit in Jalingo, capital of his state.

He said deployment of special forces to the state was necessary to root out “the regrouping Boko Haram insurgents and other terrorists in the state”.

“The massive influx of people into Taraba for some time now has been the major cause of insecurity,” Ishaku said.

“But when I was warning of the repercussions, I was accused of being against visitors, but today all of us are victims of their criminal activities.

“The terrorists are today committing all sorts of criminal activities, including rape, kidnapping and killings.

“People can’t travel freely on Bali-Suntai-Takum road among several other routes any longer in the state.”

Ishaku also proffered ranching as the best solution to the clashes between farmers and grazers as well as cattle rustling in the state.

“The population of Nigeria at independence and now is not the same and we must think and look inward to solve these problems associated with open grazing,” he said.

  • Boko Haram: UN team arrives Nigeria to de-mine Sambisa

A team of UN experts has arrived in Nigeria to assess the number of landmines Boko Haram terrorists have laid in the Sambisa Forest.

Ms Agnes Marcaillou, Director, UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), told newsmen in New York that the team arrived the country on Tuesday.

According to her, the assessment is with a view to de-mining and clearing the area of landmines.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that UNMAS collaborates with 11 other UN departments, agencies, programmes and funds to ensure effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problems of landmines and explosive remnants of war, including cluster munitions.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, had on Sunday called for deliberate efforts to remove mines from the Sambisa forest after the sack of the insurgents from the area.

Buratai said the effort required the assistance of the UN, Non-Governmental Organisations and development partners as the country could not do it alone.

Speaking on the UN response, Marcaillou said: “UNMAS has sent some people to Nigeria and they have arrived already today (Tuesday) to explore this matter further.

I would say that the standard is that we need first and foremost, the involvement of the country in looking at the threat, it’s a partnership.

The United Nations and UNMAS have no magic wand. We need to get an assessment of the problem together; UN brings the capacities of the UN and the government together.

And then the Government of Nigeria will take the lead in mobilising the international community support.

This is because everything that we will do together at one point or another in Nigeria will require funding to meet those needs.

We need the concrete engagement of the government. We need to have evidence that the Government of Nigeria has put this question as a top priority on its agenda.’’

She, however, pledged the commitment of the UN mine service to working with the Federal Government to rid the conflict-prone areas of landmines.

But right now, the positive side of the story is that we have responded to the call.

And we have a number of people who have already arrived the country today (Tuesday) to discuss it further,” she said.

  • Sambisa forest and lessons from the air

    By Philip Agbese

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Information, finally did what it should have done a long time ago.

The FG this week took the convener of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, co-Convener Aisha Yesufu, spokesman for the Chibok community, Manasseh Allen and Ibrahim Usman on an Air Force mission in search of the Chibok girls.

Taking a delegation on a trip to see things for themselves is a masterstroke that clarified many things but only that in this instance the ministry transacted with the wrong group.

One can forgive offer to BBOG after its serial harassment and blackmail of government officials.

It is however self-serving on the part of the group to accept the offer since its presence on that tour was uncalled for and unnecessary because BBOG is not representing anybody’s interest other than its members’.

The visit should have been for key stakeholders particularly the parents of the girls and other elder statesmen and women not a group of career activist on joyride.

That people who took it upon themselves to constitute nuisance had the right of first refusal for the tour has set a very dangerous precedent as blackmail and harassment of government would henceforth be considered as the new normal.

The aftermath of the exercise has shown that it was a wasted venture where BBOG racketeers are concerned.

Similar to excursions, the tour should have by now helped the group’s members transit from theoretical perception of things to fully appreciate that the real deal is not what it is depicted as in Hollywood blockbusters where the protagonists kills off the antagonists in the last ten minutes of the flick and set hostages free.

On the contrary, searching for the missing girls is a tedious exercise considering technological and human limitations that are amplified by other realities in the theatre of war.

Ezekwesili, who is BBOG, would however not have anyone or anything obstruct her attention craving lifestyle.

Accepting the invitation to that tour was not without drama, she first set conditions and got her fifteen hours in the media limelight.

By the time the guided tour was over, like someone requiring a fix every other time, she craved even more media attention and rushed to grab it before Nigerians lose interest in her and discuss the reality of the scale of logistics needed to search for the girls.

As if for us to finally comprehend the quality of reasoning that powered the government she served in the past, Ezekwesili reduced the efforts to find the stolen girls to trivia of geography. “Dreaded Sambisa is massive. Sixty thousand square kilometers.

Eighteen times the size of Lagos State! All of Lagos is 3,345 square km,” she tweeted from her verified account on Twitter.

The BBOG Convener further wrote, ““The famous Camp Zero in Sambisa? Well, it turns out that capturing Camp Zero is NOT equal to capturing Sambisa.

It is just a spot in there.” Series of other tweets later, she indicated she and her group would be back to the trenches.

“We came. We learned. Now we return. To stand! To demand!!

    #BringBackOurGirlsNowAndAlive!” She declared.

Apparently, if the tour was meant to make members of BBOG see reason and allow the military do their work it did not achieve that.

Thankfully that was never announced as the intention since the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed clearly stated that the trip was to give first hand information that will allow for better understanding of efforts being made to find the remaining Chibok Girls.

Before either sides, government and BBOG, formally make their assessment of the trip some lessons are already apparent.

First, is that Ezekwesili as the convener of BBOG has proven beyond measure through her comments on Twitter that there is a strong element of malice in the way she and some members of the group are carrying out their campaign.

Whether this malice is purposeful or accidental is left to be seen but one now has an impression of a group that is hellbent on harassing government.

Secondly, even as confirmed by the former minister, a lot of the assertions earlier made by the campaigners was driven by ignorance.

Placard carrying members of BBOG had been misinformed by their leaders and handlers to think that the entire northeast was the size of 100 football field and Sambisa Forest was the size of a housing estate.

Now that they have realized the enormity of the landmass involved one would expect they will quietly ruminate over what needed to be done but Ezekwesili, not wanting to lose her moment in the spotlight has turned around to say capturing Camp Zero is not the same as capturing Sambisa Forest.

Had the Boko Haram terrorists been allowed to continue at the pace they were going before the inception of this administration would their capture of Abuja, the nation’s capital, not be as good as capturing the entire country?

The trip has shown Ezekwesili that military operations, even from the relative safety of being airborne is not the same as attending World Bank sponsored business dinners. She cannot use her large following to perpetuate the lie that she is now an expert in military tactics and operations.

She must be humble enough to admit that a one day emotional sortie flight is not enough to confirm anyone a pilot or military strategists and such should not come up with inciting or inflammatory comments in the aftermath of this mission.

Even where she does decides to throw decorum to the wind the average person on her group should have by now seen that this woman is overrated. She possibly thought the trip comes with estacode and travel allowance and that she is disappointed is glaring to see.

It is natural for her to totally lose it when she discovered governance has changed and there is no more frittering money away as was the case in the past, including under her watch.

If she cannot stomach the reality that much is being done to rescue these girls she can go start another support group, create a bucket list or spend more time at the salon to chat with other women or simply find other avenues to feed her idleness without whipping up negative sentiments at a time the nation is in need of healing.

The same way the Air Force sortie allowed a better view of Sambisa Forest from the skies it has allowed one to have a better view of the convener and the group the formed. It is about something else, not the abducted girls.

Agbese is President of Stand Up 4 Nigeria(SUN) writes from Abuja.

  • Army recover more Boko Haram items in Sambisa

Irabor said that the items included a pair of black uniform with camouflage design often used by security guards of Abubakar Shekau in his videos.

“On Jan. 5, at about 1000hrs, our troops conducted a mop-up operation around Camp Zairo general area and recovered additional Boko Haram terrorists’ items.

“They included a pair of black uniform with camouflage design on the edges, a précis on motar operation written in Arabic, one big size of the Qur’an, and 4 notebooks containing names of terrorists, “he said.

” The items also include a list of the terrorists locs, a list of IED materials and method of preparation and breakdown of quantities of arms and ammunition issued to their members.
