EPL: Samir Nasri tips Manchester City to win the league

Former Manchester City Midfielder, Samir Nasri has said that the Citizens  will beat Arsenal on Wednesday to be at a vantage position to clinch the title.

Arsenal have topped the English Premier League log since day 1 but now face a big task of losing grip of the number 1 position.

Mikel Arteta’s men have drawn three successive matches, giving up leads at Liverpool and West Ham in recent weeks.

It means Arsenal have dropped six points in their last three games and unless they win at the Etihad, their destiny will no longer be in their own hands.

City is eyeing a third successive title under Pep Guardiola.

Nasri, who helped the Manchester outfit claim their first title in 2012, has told L’Equipe: “I can’t wait for it, because the winner will have one hand on the title, and the fact that these are two clubs that meant something for my playing career.

“City are reaching the peak of their form at the right moment, with all of their players being available for the run-in, unlike previous years.”

Former France, Arsenal playmaker Nasir retires

Samir Nasri has confirmed his retirement from football at the age of 34.

The former France international announced his decision on Sunday on Canal+, a media outlet where he is now a pundit.

Nasri came through at Marseille and transferred to Arsenal in 2008, spending three years at Emirates Stadium before he joined Manchester City.

At Manchester City, Nasri won two English Premier League (EPL) titles, a League Cup and a Community Shield.

He joined Sevilla on loan in 2016/2017 and seemed to have revitalised his career in La Liga, though the move was not made permanent.

A short spell in Turkey with Antalyaspor followed, but Nasri mutually terminated his contract in January 2018, before he received a six-month ban from football by UEFA.

This was for breaching WADA rules in December 2016 by receiving an intravenous drip of 500 millilitres of water containing nutrients.

It is that ban that Nasri says made him fall out of love with football, with the playmaker always saying he was innocent.

“One episode hurt me badly and changed my relationship with football: my suspension,” he said on Canal+.

“I found that more than unfair, I had not taken any doping product. It was just an injection of vitamins because I was sick. It cut me off in my tracks.”

Nasri returned to play with West Ham on a short-term contract in 2018/2019, playing five league games in total.

He linked up with ex-Manchester City teammate Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht the following season, though it was another ill-fated spell and he was released in 2020.

Of his move to Anderlecht, Nasri said: “There was an emotional side, but also the idea of being a player and also a little in the staff.

“As I would like to coach, I told myself that I would learn with him [Kompany].

“It didn’t go as planned. Then the championship was stopped because of COVID-19. Afterwards, I didn’t necessarily want to [play].

“No challenge excited me and I couldn’t see myself coming back to France if it wasn’t Marseille.”

Nasri impressed at Arsenal, scoring 18 league goals and setting up a further seven across his three seasons at the club, though injuries often kept his appearances down.

He never quite lived up to the billing at Manchester City, though he did help the club to their first ever Premier League crown in 2011/2012.

In 2013/2014, he scored seven goals and created as many as Manuel Pellegrini’s side clinched the title.

His appearances dwindled later in his Manchester City career, and he played just 12 times in the league in his final full season at the Etihad Stadium.

He started on only four occasions before he was loaned out by Pep Guardiola in 2016.

  • Former Arsenal midfielder Nasri to have West Ham medical

Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri is to undergo a medical at West Ham before a proposed move to the London club.

Nasri, 31, is allowed to start training again this month after completing an 18-month doping ban.

It is understood that the former France international will join the Hammers for an initial six months with the option to extend.

He will be able to play from 1 January, 2019 and would be reunited with one of his bosses at City, Manuel Pellegrini.

Nasri most recently played for Turkish club Antalyaspor, but his contract terminated on 31 January this year.

A month later he was banned, initially for six months, for using an intravenous drip treatment that contravened World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rules, leading to a Spanish Anti-Doping investigation.

It was alleged that in 2016, while on loan from City to Sevilla, he received 500 milliliters of hydration in the form of sterile water containing micronutrient components, which exceeds the permissible limit.

In February 2017, a request by Sevilla for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for Nasri was refused by Uefa, and its decision was later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The France midfielder has made 215 appearances in the Premier League, featuring for Arsenal from 2008 to 2011 before moving to Manchester City for £25m, where he stayed until August 2017.

  • Former Arsenal midfielder’s doping ban extended to 18 months

Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri has had his doping ban for using a drip treatment at a Los Angeles clinic increased from six to 18 months.

It follows an appeal against the original sanction, given to the Frenchman by Uefa in February.

The ban is backdated to 1 July 2017, even though Nasri, 31, has made eight appearances for Turkish side Antalyaspor since then,

He is now a free agent and can return to training with any club in November.

Nasri took the drip treatment while on holiday in 2016, but it contravened World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rules leading to a Spanish Anti-Doping investigation.

At the time the ex-France international was on loan from Manchester City to Sevilla.

Wada rules state there is a 50 millilitre infusion limit per six-hour period for active athletes but it was alleged he received 500 millilitres of hydration in the form of sterile water containing micronutrient components.

In February 2017, a request by Sevilla for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for Nasri was refused by Uefa, and its decision was later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On Wednesday, Uefa’s ethics and disciplinary inspector argued that ban was insufficient and European football’s governing body extended it by 12 months.

Nasri’s spell with Antalyaspor lasted only six months after he joined from Manchester City in August 2017.

He played for Arsenal from 2008 to 2011 before moving to City for £25m, going on to win the Premier League twice during his time at Etihad Stadium.

During his loan spell at Sevilla last season he made 30 appearances and scored three goals.
