Sanwo-Olu reveals kickoff date for Badagry seaport

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday says work on the planned Badagry Deep Seaport and Free Zone Project will likely commence in June.

The State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said this in Badagry, during the Stakeholders’ Meeting on Badagry Deep Seaport and Free Zone Project.

The plan to begin construction of the seaport, which will be hosted by 12 communities in Badagry, came after 10 years of conceiving the idea, in 2012, during the administration of former governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.

Sanwo-Olu said that the government was in the process of getting ratification from the Federal Government, which would hopefully, be received by the end of April.

”By June, we must activate something for the port. We want to deliberately push development to Badagry.

”The Badagry Deep Seaport Project is not just one project; it is a multi-level opportunity for progress for all the people of this state in view of the volume of trade and quantum of investment opportunities that would spring up in the area when the project commences, and when it is completed and operational.

”Very importantly, employment and capacity building for the teeming youth and women in the affected communities will be prioritised.

”When fully operational, it will not only boost the fortunes of the people of Badagry, but, also transform the entire economy of our state and that of the entire West African sub-region,” he said.

According to him, when completed, the Badagry Deep Seaport will be the second in the state after the one in Lekki, projected to be inaugurated in 2022.

He said that with these two deep seaports, the state would experience significant relief from the difficult challenges being experienced in the Apapa axis, due to the activities at the Tin-Can port, which had been overstretched beyond its installed capacity.

Sanwo-Olu said that the stakeholders’ meeting would enable stakeholders reason together and forge a common course of action toward making the dream of Badagry Deep Seaport, a reality in the most feasible time possible.

”It is equally important to ensure that investors’ confidence is secured at the commencement of the project, hence, our gathering to discuss salient issues bordering on community-relations and improving business environment for the Management of Badagry Port Development Ltd.

”We know for certain that a project of this nature and magnitude will require a lot of sacrifice on the part of the people and affected communities.

”I wish to assure you that we are ready and willing to adequately compensate for loss of economic crops and replacement of lost assets such as buildings and ancestral sites.

”I greet the people and representatives of Ganyingbo Town, Ganyingbo Sea Beach, Gbaji-Yeke-Tome, Angovi Town, Angovi Sea Beach, Yovoyan, Gberefu, Agbojetho, Kujinada, and I specially extend my greetings to the people and representatives of Aivoji, Asakpo and Hoke-Daho.

”This is your home and you have opened your doors to us; your immense contributions to the actualisation of this dream is not taken for granted,” he said.

The governor called the Aivoji, Asakpo and Hoke-Daho communities to come forward with their concerns, so that they could be resolved.

He said that this would enable the conclusion of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), so that payment of compensations could begin.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Dr Lola Akande, commended Gov. Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to the actualisation of the seaport project, which was conceived in 2012.

Akande said that the state government earnestly sought for cooperation in making the state attractive to investors at all times, for the continued growth and development of the local economy.

Mr Didi Ndiomu, the Chief Executive Officer, Badagry Port Development Ltd., said that the project would be developed in four phases under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

Ndiomu said that the seaport would be located in Gberefu area of Badagry, and covered an area of approximately 1,103 hectares.

He said that out of 1,103 hectares, 623 was dedicated for port activities, including an 18-meter draft and 4Km quay, making it a port with the deepest draft and widest berths in Sub Sahara Africa.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appointed the Rector of Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, Dr Oluremi Olaleye, as Acting Vice Chancellor of the newly established Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

Olaleye announced his appointment while addressing members of staff at a town hall meeting held on Friday at the Ikorodu Campus of the institution.

LASPOTECH was transmuted to LASUSTECH following its accreditation by the National Universities omission on Feb. 2, 2022.

Olaleye expressed his profound gratitude to Sanwo-Olu for approving his appointment as the acting vice chancellor of LASPOTECH.

He also thanked the Special Adviser on Education, Tokunbo Wahab and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, for their efforts towards the successful transmutation of the institution.

He told members of staff that Gov. Sanwo-Olu had assured that no staff would lose his or her job due to the transmutation and urged them to be more dutiful as the university status required more efficiency and proficiency in service delivery.

“Lagos State Government knows that staff have families and for their needs to be met, nobody will be sacked.

“What is demanded of all staff of this institution is to key into this transmutation process and support the state government, governing council and management.

“This institution will not be a conventional but a specialised university of science and technology.

“Not until the last student graduate, LASPOTECH still exists, the students currently in school will graduate as a OND/HND,” he said.

Olaleye also announced the reinstatement of four sacked non academic staff which resulted in seven-month crisis that disrupted academic programmes of the institution.

The acting vice chancellor disclosed that LASUSTEH had been included in the ongoing UTME being conducted by JAMB for this year.

“Currently, we have about 60 PhD holders in this institution, the governor assured us that nobody will lose his or her job,” he said.

NAN reports that LASPOTEH Ikorodu campus erupted into great jubilation on Friday as staff engaged in singing and dancing when the news of Olaleye’s appointment as acting vice-chancellor and the reinstatement of the sacked staff filtered into the institution.

2nd term: Sanwo-Olu doesn’t need your ticket, APC slams PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has described as “Greek gift”, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship ticket offer to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, should APC deny him in 2023.

The APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo, said this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

“Our attention has been drawn to the offer of the opposition PDP’s gubernatorial ticket to the governor of Lagos State in the next national elections.

“While the thought of desperately offering its worthless electoral tickets to every passerby is laughable, the extent of the level of degradation, degeneration and comatose state of Lagos state PDP shouldn’t be lost on all and sundry.

“The platform that initially elected Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, having acknowledged his glowing performance across various sectors in his first term, is certainly still available to re-contest for another term,” Oladejo said.

He said Sanwo-Olu’s deft handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the successful execution of the all-encompassing THEMES agenda had endeared him to residents as a compassionate, committed and the right leader for a time like this.

Oladejo said that Sanwo-Olu had, without doubt, redirected the state to the path of progress and restored its pride of place as the leading light in the federation.

He urged Sanwo-Olu to remain focused and undistracted “from the onerous task of finishing strongly and fulfilling his part of the social contract with the good people of Lagos State.”

According to him, PDP must desist from its age-long tactics of perennial attempts to destabilise the ruling party by the deliberate promotion of falsehood, blackmail and arms-twisting strategies for political advantage.

“While we sympathise with Lagos State PDP over its several years of political misfortunes and misadventures, good wisdom dictates that it put its house in order to have a semblance of relevance.

“It is pitiable that PDP could only think of fishing in the pool of capable talents in the APC while looking for people to offer its worthless electoral tickets.

” This underscores the lack of attraction in the PDP and an admittance of its usual Waterloo in the forthcoming elections.

“Gov. Sanwo-Olu hereby unequivocally rejects this Greek gift and hereby states that APC remains his party of choice in making his next political move which will be made known in due course to all and sundry,” the spokesman said.

Sanwo-Olu signs bills for additional 2 varsities in Lagos

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Wednesday signed the bills for the establishment of two additional universities in the state.

Sanwo-Olu signed the bill at the Lagos House, Marina, to establish the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology respectively.

The bills is to upgrade the Lagos State Polytechnic in Ikorodu, Isolo and Surulere campuses to the University of Science and Technology.

The bill will also ensure the changing of Adeniran Ogunsanya Colleges of Education, Ijanikin and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Epe to Lagos State University of Education.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the governor said that Lagos residents were now blessed with two additional universities to the existing Lagos State University (LASU), established in 1982 by the First Executive Governor of the state, the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

He said that the state government would take the law to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for due process.

According to him, the government is believing a timely approval from NUC, as it longs to receive the certificates for the establishment of the two universities.

”We believe that the transmission would be smooth. We believe that the process would be without any hindrance. We believe that we will do a good job at ensuring that what is best is the only thing that we do for Lagos.

”I feel so delighted and proud of all of us creating history today and I believe that indeed generations coming after us will remember this very bold, audacious decision that we have taken.

”The two institutions that have now been transmitted into universities are institutions that have produced professionals, students, lecturers among others notable men and women in our society,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said that what the government had done was proper, for the existing staff, both academic and non-academic and more importantly, for the students today and in future.

Speaking earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Tokunbo Wahab said the establishment of LASUED and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, would solve issues relating to admission for Lagos State citizens.

Wahab commended Gov. Sanwo-Olu for assenting to the establishment of the two more universities and the Lagos State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa for believing in the process.

Sanwo-Olu reveals Lekki Port as final solution to Apapa Gridlock

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Tuesday said that timely completion of Lekki Port would put an end to the intractable Apapa gridlock.

Sanwo-Olu said this at the Opening Ceremony of the Africa Business Convention, organised by Business Day Newspaper at Victoria Island.

He said that the completion of Lekki Port would ease the congestion along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, the port access roads and Apapa environs.

The governor noted that several measures would be put in place to ensure that Apapa was decongested. The state government needed to change the officials regularly to ensure there was no compromise in services rendered.

Sanwo-Olu informed that government was committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to residents and had completed iconic projects within the state in the last two and half years.

He cited infrastructural projects like Lekki Deep Port, 4th Mainland Bridge, Red and Blue line rails. Others are Imota Rice Mills, among others are ongoing or in the pipeline. They are to be completed and become operational within the next 24 months.

The process leading to the commencement of the construction of the 4th Mainland Bridge, which would start from Badore in Ajah and end in Ikorodu, he said, would be completed before the second quarter of the year.

”Lagos is, in addition to being Africa’s most populous megacity, the continent’s premier business and investment destination, and we will continue to do all within our power to remain so.

”As I speak, several landmarks, public and private infrastructure and investment projects are underway or nearing completion in Lagos State.

”These include the biggest single-train Petroleum Refinery in the world, one of the largest Rice Mills in the world, one of the largest and most modern Deep-Sea Ports on the continent, and West Africa’s biggest Light Rail network.

”Within the next 24 months, we expect all of these to be operational.

”We are also Africa’s Startup capital, ahead of Nairobi, Cape Town and Johannesburg, in terms of the number of startups and in terms of investment inflows and the size of exits.

“Flutterwave and Paystack, two of the most prominent African unicorns of the decade, were born here.

”In addition, we are home to several major investments ongoing in real estate, like Eko Atlantic on the edge of Victoria Island, and Alaro City on the Lekki Peninsula,” he said.

The Publisher of Business Day Newspaper, Mr Frank Aigbogun, commended Gov. Sanwo-Olu for the great work done in ridding Apapa of traffic gridlocks and for delivering on his promises to residents.

”When we had the interview, which I moderated, hosted by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry before the elections in 2019, Apapa dominated that conversation.

”I don’t know how often you go to Apapa Mr Governor, but I think between 23 and 27 minutes these days, you get Apapa.

”So, Mr Governor, I want to acknowledge the work that you have done and to commend you and your team for delivering on your promises,” Aigbogun said.

MSSN urge Sanwo-Olu to enforce use of hijab in schools

Amirah (Female President) of MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Miss Basheerah Majekodunmi, made the appeal in a statement in Lagos.
The statement was in commemoration of 2022 World Hijab Day. Majekodunmi called on the Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct issuance of the circular in compliance with a Court of Appeal judgement granting the use of hijab in public schools.
She said that some principals and teachers claimed that they did not get a previous circular on the matter during Mr Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration.
Majekodunmi advised school principals and teachers against the victimisation and discrimination of Muslim students.
“Ignorance is no excuse before the law.Teachers and principals who either feign ignorance or turn deaf ear to justice and morality have made it difficult and fearful for students to use their hijabs as prescribed by their creator.
“We appeal to Lagos State Government to issue another circular that will be well-publicised. ” We enjoy peace in Lagos State and don’t want any crisis,” Majekodunmi said. She hailed efforts of the state government in providing quality education.
“A picture of Gov. Sanwo-Olu sitting with a hijab-wearing student is in clear contrast to injustice meted on some students who also chose to wear hijab in other schools,” she said.
Majekodunmi advised students to speak out when experiencing any form of molestation or victimisation.
Newsmen reports that the 2022 World Hijab Day, with the theme, “Hijab is our Crown, not A Crime”, was aimed to disapprove and end harassment of females wearing hijabs in schools and workplaces.
  • 2023: Tinubu most qualified candidate for president – Sanwo-Olu

2023: Tinubu most qualified candidate for president – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says All Progressives National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is the most qualified Nigerian to be president in 2023.

Sanwo-Olu said this, while drumming support for the Tinubu candidacy, during the formal inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (ABAT) Movement’s Working Committee in Ikeja.

The Movement was conceived and set up by members of Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos, for the actualisation of the presidential ambition of the former Lagos Governor.

He said that the indisputable capability of Tinubu, to effectively manage human and material resources for visible progress stood him out as the most qualified Nigerian to be president in 2023.

Sanwo-Olu said that Tinubu’s qualification rested on his demonstrated capacity in deploying a mix of genius and statecraft to nurture a city on the brink to a flourishing economy.

He said that the progress in Lagos remained a visible experiment initiated by the APC leader.

Sanwo-Olu said that Nigeria had continued to shoulder the burden of the black race, and the country’s transformation into a stable economy would be a source of pride to the black man.

According to him, in 2023, the country needs a capable leader with progressive ideas to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari and build on the progress recorded by the current administration.

”Tinubu’s practicable ideas in governance makes him the most qualified successor and saleable choice for the job.

”Our country is the most populous black nation in the world and the responsibility that comes with that is enormous. No doubt that the destiny of the entire black race is tied to the greatness of Nigeria.

”If our country must be great, we have the responsibility to choose the leadership that will bring about true transformation across every facet of our national life.

”Who is that rallying figure that should lead us in this journey? The answer is deeply connected to our mission and purpose here today. That person must be a detribalised Nigerian and a bridge builder, who has been tested and trusted.

”A thinker, who must sustain the legacy our current president is leaving behind. That person is the reason we are inaugurating this movement for the actualisation of his presidential ambition. That person is our great leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said that Tinubu’s name was synonymous with growth and development and possessed a midas touch to positively turn around the resources of the country for general good.

He said that the event was to raise foot soldiers, team leaders and cheerleaders, who would pursue the movement’s objectives and cascade down its messages to every voter at the ward level, with commitment and passion.

The governor charged all selected for leadership roles in the movement to reflect Tinubu’s political ideals of openness and tolerance in their engagement and mobilisation.

APC stalwart, Cardinal James Odumbaku, said that the forthcoming general elections presented another opportunity for Nigerians to make the right choice, to keep the country on the path of development.

Odumbaku said that the electorate must get it right by electing a tested and credible leader to steer the leadership of the country, hence, the movement believe that Bola Tinubu remained the right man for the top seat.

GAC leader, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, described Tinubu as “a genius” in statecraft, adding that the APC Leader was a saleable article in the political market.

”We have to be prepared and determined, because the contest would be a battle of might and strength,” Olusi said.

The Movement’s Director-General, Mr Oyinlomo Danmole, said that ABAT structure was different from other support groups set up across the country for the actualisation for Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

Danmole said that all cluster groups within the Lagos APC had representation in the movement, with the inclusion of every locality in the state.

He said that seven-member committee had been set up in each of the 57 local councils in Lagos, with each committee headed by coordinators.

Danmole said that at the ward level, the movement maintained similar committee structure of seven persons across the 377 wards, adding that registration to be part of the ward committee would be made open to residents in the coming days.

Fracas: Accord Party wants Sanwo-Olu to proscribe NURTW

The Lagos State chapter of the Accord Party has called on Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to proscribe the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) following repeated violence by its members.

Newsmen reports that factional members of the union on Thursday on Lagos Island attacked one another, leaving many injured including traders and commuters.

The fracas, which extended to Friday, left some people dead and paralysed business activities in the area.

The Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Dele Oladeji, reacting to the development in a statement on Saturday, called on Sanwo-Olu to tame the members of the NURTW by proscribing the union with immediate effect.

Oladeji said: “Again, the members of the NURTW were enmeshed in a deadly fight on Lagos Island which was reported to have resulted in the untimely death of some four youths.

“This deadly clash created a security scare, in which innocent and hardworking residents of Lagos had to scamper into shops, crevices, under tables and inside gutters for dear lives.

“Many rushed into shops and were locked in with the shop owners, just to stay away from stray bullets or being caught up in the fracas.

“Traders were forced to shut down their businesses, which led to the loss of transactions running into billions of naira.

“We advise the Lagos State governor to, with immediate effect, proscribe the NURTW for a peaceful and safe Lagos city.”

The spokesman said that the recent violence was one too many among the members of the NURTW in Lagos State.

Oladeji said that though members of the union were always in the habit of killing themselves during such fracas, their action had always defied the security set up in Lagos State and had always created a state of insecurity among residents.

“Ask an average resident of Lagos, and they will tell you they live and commute in utter fright of these ‘union boys’ daily on the streets and roads.

“Gov. Sanwo-Olu should rise up in service to residents of the state and proscribed these lawless groups for a safer Lagos State,” he added.

He said that NURTW factions were known to frequently engage in free-for-all overpower tussles at different locations and parks.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, was quoted as saying that normalcy had returned to Idumota and its environs on Lagos Island.

Also, the Lagos State Government had appealed to the warring parties which it identified as members of the NURTW to stop their violent acts.

Mr Gbenga Oyerinde, the Special Adviser to Gov. Sanwo-Olu on Central Business Districts, said that security operatives had been mandated to arrest and prosecute anybody breaching the peace in a statement he released.
