Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has told well wishers and friends not to place any advert in the newspapers to mark his 55th birthday.

The Governor turns 55 years on June 25, 2020.

A statement issued by Gboyega Akosile, his Chief Press Secretary on Wednesday said “This is to inform friends, families, professional colleagues and political associates of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu that no congratulatory advertisements should be placed in newspapers to celebrate his forthcoming birthday.

“The Governor wishes to continue his tradition of reaching out and sharing love with the needy in the society.

“Mr. Governor believes that an occasion of one’s birthday, especially a milestone such as the age of 55, should be a day to reflect on one’s purpose of existence in life and, this according to him, is “to serve the humanity”.

“Apart from the outreach, Mr. Governor is scheduled to spend the better part of the day to attend to many important State matters.”

He added: “The Governor thanks his numerous supporters and well wishers, who may have planned to celebrate with him in one way or another as he turns 55, advising them to use same resources to touch the lives of the most vulnerable people in their spheres of influence.

“The best birthday gift anyone would give me at this period is to identify those at the bottom of the pyramid wherever they reside, lift them up by putting smiles on their faces-that way, you would have lifted my heart too.

“Finally, there is no plan for any form of celebration other than what has been stated above.”

Sanwo’s guidelines on reopening of churches is ‘abomination of desolation’ – Chris Okotie

Rev. Chris Okotie has rejected the latest guidelines issued by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the reopening of worship centres.

In a statement released in Lagos, on Friday, the Pastor of the Household of God Church, Oregun, Lagos described the guidelines as an ‘abomination of desolation.’

He vowed: “Our doors will remain closed until these profanation and secularization have been pulverized by the Emperor of heaven.”

It will be recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, rolled out new guidelines for the reopening of worship centres which restricted church attendance to 500 members.

He also said those who are 65 and above and below 15 years of age cannot attend. The measures, according to the governor, is meant to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Rev Okotie, who had last Monday in a widely published statement lashed out at CAN for proposing similar guidelines, said government cannot reorder worship in the house of God.

He said, “Beloved, yesterday, the abomination of desolation took a giant step towards standing in the holy place.

“To reorder temple worship is to deny God the divine prerogative of congregational adoration and the holy genuflects of the saints in light.

“Let no man’s heart be troubled by the vengeance of satanic antagonism. Dagon the god of the philistines fell in obeisance before the Ark of God.

“Coronavirus, the god of Secular Humanism will be decapitated in like manner. Our doors will remain closed until these profanation and secularization have been pulverized by the Emperor of heaven.

“Unto him shall the gathering of the people be. To thy tents O Israel.”

  • COVID-19: I will lockdown Lagos if you continue to violate social distancing – Sanwo-Olu warns Lagosians

COVID-19: I will lockdown Lagos if you continue to violate social distancing – Sanwo-Olu warns Lagosians

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday threatened to lockdown Lagos again if Lagosians continue to violate the social distancing order.

The governor expressed displeasure that some Lagosians, especially those in the transportation sector did not obey the social distancing order in totality.

The governor, while giving update on the Coronavirus situation in the state, said on the first day of this new phase of an eased lockdown, the compliance level for commercial transport sector operations was regrettably very low.

“Yellow Buses especially, failed to comply with the capacity restrictions outlined in our framework. While compliance has improved in subsequent days, it is still not encouraging. Many commercial motorcycle operators openly and indiscriminately defied the suspension.

“The ban on Inter-state travel except for essential goods and services was also consistently flouted. In many cases people decided to make the final leg of the journey into the State on foot, to beat the restrictions.

“Trucks and other vehicles carrying items designated as essential, have also played major roles in flouting the guidelines, by conspiring to conceal and smuggle people in and out of the State,” he said.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the reports about mask usage in public places had also not been encouraging as many people were still choosing to go out without masks or face coverings of any kind, saying this was simply unacceptable.

“Let me reiterate that the success of this gradual easing of the lockdown is dependent upon the compliance of each and every one of us.

“As a Government, elected to uphold the security of Lagos State – and this includes health security – let me make it clear that we will not hesitate to review the terms of this easing if we continue to see evidence that Lagosians are determined to flout the rules.

“I am aware that the Presidential Task Force has also made this point; that the continued maintenance of this easing is only guaranteed when people consistently comply.

“Let the numbers we have seen this week stand as a warning to all of you the good people of Lagos State. What we are seeing is child’s play compared to what we could be seeing if we continue to be irresponsible,” he warned.

However, Sanwo-Olu, said five days into this gradual easing, “we can look back and pronounce a verdict on the general levels of compliance in major sectors of our economy.

“Let me start with the encouraging news. We have seen our manufacturing and construction companies gradually ease back into operation. We are happy with the level of compliance in this sector, as well as the beneficial impact of this limited resumption on our economy.

“In the case of our intra-state commuting, and particularly with our BRT and LBSL Buses, and water transport operations, substantial compliance with the carriage policy of no more than 60 percent of maximum capacity was recorded. Markets and Mechanic Villages also demonstrated significant compliance.

“In terms of open markets and stores, our directive was that food and farm produce markets will open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while markets dealing in other items will open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We have seen high levels of compliance in this regard, as well as in the maintenance of physical distancing and the use of face masks in the markets,” he said.

  • Lagos Assembly to Sanwo-Olu: We want bit-by-bit expenditure of COVID-19 donations

Lagos Assembly to Sanwo-Olu: We want bit-by-bit expenditure of COVID-19 donations

The Lagos House of Assembly on Thursday asked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to account for expenses incurred from donations received in support of the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

At the plenary presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the House asked Sanwo-Olu to introduce a co-chairman from the Executive to represent state’s COVID-19 Incident Commander before the House.

Obasa said: “It is our own duty to do what is right.

“The law says the executive will come forward to give account on what they have expended.”

Member representing Mushin Constituency II, Olayiwola Abdul-Sobur, maintained that the donations and grants accrued to the state government should be domiciled in the Consolidated Revenue Funds and the executive must be reminded that no money should be withdrawn from any public funds without the authorisation of the House.

“There should be transparency and trustworthiness on the part of the Executive and they should be mindful of the funds which are donations and grants that are not budgeted for,” he said.

The Chairman House Committee on Health Services, Mr Akeem Shokunle, urged the governor to be mindful that the funds referred to were neither budgeted for nor in the consolidated fund or development fund.

He said the House would ensure proper accountability of the donations and grants in accordance with the law.

The lawmakers also charged Sanwo-Olu to refer to them while declaring a state of emergency during peculiar situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The admonition followed the observation raised by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), on a recently passed Bill tagged: ‘Coronavirus Pandemic Emergency Law, 2020.”

The Executive had sought amendment to the provisions of the law requiring the governor to take recourse to the House before declaring state of emergency and rendering account to the House on the spending of the COVID-19 donations.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, said during yesterday’s plenary that, “It (the provision) is not depriving the governor of his power.”

He added: “It is our own duty to do what is right. It is for them to follow what we do in line with the Constitution. The law says, they will come forward to give account on what they have expended.

“If you set up a committee and the governor is the chairman, and the House committee later invites the governor, it will look like a confrontation.”

The speaker clarified further that it would be better to introduce a co-chairman from the Executive on incident command, who would be ready to face the House committee.

He argued that “now that we have an emergency situation, there must be an independent account set up separately, otherwise something is missing somewhere.”

The Chairman House Committee on Health Services, Akeem Shokunle, read the recommendations of the committee on a report that addressed the observations raised by the Attorney-General.

The recommendation stated in part, “With regards to paragraph three of the observation, the committee is of the opinion that it is not a usurpation of power to create a procedure for activating a donated power.

“Section 305 of 1999 Constitution which gives the power to declare a state of emergency clearly stipulates the procedure to be followed in exercising that given power.”

“The committee also pointed out that we are all in these together, once Mr. Governor communicates his intention to extend the state of emergency to the House, it will expeditiously be dealt with as already stated in section 23(2) of the law.

“Mr. Governor should be mindful of the fact that the funds referred to are funds not budgeted for and it is not in the consolidated fund or development fund, but are donations and grants and since Mr Governor is so mindful of his public image, it is only right that we help him to so do which is why the provision of section 4 (2) of the Law is sacrosanct.”

The report titled, “Recently passed Coronavirus Pandemic Emergency Law, 2020, had rejected some of the proposals by the Executive, saying the governor should be mindful that the funds are not budgeted for.

However, a member, Folajimi Mohammaed, had noted that following Quarantine Act, the governor might not take recourse to the House because it demands urgent action.

But, the Speaker argued that going by Constitutional provision, the governor would have to come for accountability sake.

BREAKING: Ten officials in Lagos governor’s house test positive

Ten persons have tested positive to coronavirus at the Lagos State House, Marina, an official said on Thursday.

Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, said the persons were confirmed positive, although the governor and his wife tested negative to the virus.

The Lagos State House is the official residence of the governor of Lagos State.

Details of the positive individuals were not disclosed, but the Commissioner said they are “associated” with the state house.

“I am glad to announce that COVID-19 Incident Commander Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-olu and the First Lady of Lagos Joke Sanwo-olu have consistently tested negative to COVID-19 following three consecutive tests conducted on them recently.

“However, 10 persons associated with Lagos State House in Marina have tested positive to COVID-19,” Mr Abayomi wrote.

These are the first officials at the governor’s house to test positive for coronavirus.

Lagos recorded 82 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, increasing the total cases in the state to 1,324.

It is unclear whether the ten positive officials are part of the cases recorded in the state on Wednesday, as of press time.

As of Thursday, Lagos State has 1, 324 confirmed cases of coronavirus, 917 active cases, 358 discharged cases, two evacuated cases, 16 transferred cases and 31 deaths.

Mr Abayomi urged Lagos residents to embrace the MaskUpLagos initiative and observe all precautionary measures such as physical distancing, hand washing and other personal hygiene in order to curb the spread of the virus.

The commissioner said all directives on easing the lockdown in Lagos State remain in force and citizens should play their role in stopping the spread of the virus.

May 4: Sanwo-Olu orders Lagos workers to stay at home

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered all civil servants in the state to stay away from work on Monday, May 4.

The governor in a statement on Sunday evening asked all its civil servants not to resume work immediately, noting that the delayed resumption is a deliberate attempt to prevent overcrowding in the state.

He, however, added that emergency workers and those on essential duties would be allowed to work on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu said, “In amending the work guidelines earlier issued, which stopped members of the public service from Grade Level 1 to 12 from going to work; we have had to review this position and we are extending the directive to all civil servants, regardless of level. All civil servants must stay away from work on Monday.

“On Tuesday, only officers from Grade Level 15 and above have express permission to come to work. All other essential officers that may need to be at work will be informed by the Accounting Officer of each Ministry as may be required.

“From Monday on, there will be a curfew from 8 pm to 6 am and all movements within these hours are prohibited, except for people on essential services, which are agro-products, petroleum products, relief materials, and food supplies.

“We want to use this as a demonstration of our commitment to the gradual easing of the lockdown. We do not want people to rush out tomorrow and see the easing of the lockdown as an attempt to believe that the spread of the pandemic is all over.”
