Sanwo-olu vows to ensure the safety of Igbos, properties in Lagos

The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday visited many major markets populated by people from the South-East.

The Lagos-born politician, took a tour of the markets ahead of the Saturday gubernatorial election, following the open endorsement for his re-election by the Ndigbo community in the state.

It was a rousing welcome for Sanwo-Olu at an open forum organised by traders, under the aegis of the Auto Spare Parts And Machinery Dealers Association, in Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.

The governor at the open forum pledged to ensure the safety of the businesses and properties of Ndigbo in Lagos State.

The engagements were initiated in response to concerns raised over the safety of businesses and properties owned by South-East traders in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu allayed the fears of the Igbo traders, assuring them that Lagos would continue to be a melting pot for all Nigerians.

He said his administration would continue to foster security and promote peaceful coexistence among all ethnic nationalities in the state.

”I am here on a solidarity visit and to thank you for your public endorsement of my humble self, which I believe will be reflected at the polls on Saturday with the highest number of votes cast from members of your community.

”You are not giving us your support for anything; you believe we deserve this encouragement because my team and I have worked tirelessly to improve your well-being.

”Very soon, Ojo will have a brand new General Hospital that will serve your needs. You also have seen expressways and bridges being completed on this corridor and we have awarded a rail project into Okokomaiko that will aid the movement of people and goods.

”I am excited that Lagos is on the path of growth. Through your cooperation and peaceful coexistence, we can ensure that we will not only build the state, but we will also build a better country for ourselves,” the governor said at the Trade Fair forum.

He assured the Igbo traders of his government’s commitment to their prosperity, adding that the approval recently received by the state for the development of Badagry Seaport was to facilitate economic development and boost logistics, especially in the movement of goods.

Sanwo-Olu pledged his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of non-indigenes living in Lagos, urging the Igbo traders not to listen to the scaremongers threatening to attack them because of their electoral choices.

”We will continue to work with your leadership to enhance cooperation and identify areas we can improve on to foster peace and stability. We will not be hostile to any community of non-indigenes.

”For as long as you conduct yourselves in a peaceful manner, your safety and security will remain our priority. There is no need for any law-abiding resident to be scared,” he said.

ASPAMDA President, Chief Ngozi Emechebe, described Sanwo-Olu as ‘a true friend of Igbo’, noting that the governor had never been hostile to non-Yoruba residents living in the state.

Emechebe said that the forum was initiated as a reassurance of support of the Ndigbo community to the governor’s re-election, saying that the traders would work for Sanwo-Olu’s electoral victory in their respective polling stations.

“Sanwo-Olu is a good man and has demonstrated that he is a lover of Igbo. We have resolved to support the governor for the second term because of his performance and his economic policies that have supported our businesses.

“Through this forum, we are assuring the governor that we shall sing the song of victory together with him,” he said.

We’ll hold Sanwo-Olu responsible for any attack on Igbo in Lagos – Ohanaeze

The Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a warning to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, should the igbos be attacked in Lagos.

Ohanaeze made this known following the victory of the Labour Party, (LP), presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the State.

The group said the attack in Lagos State was an attempt to pitch the Igbo against the Yoruba.

The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, also warned that the body would hold the Oba of Lagos and MC Oluomo responsible for the attacks on the Igbo community in the state.

Speaking with pressmen, Isiguzoro urged people in Lagos State to vote out Sanwo-Olu during the forthcoming governorship election.

According to Isiguzoro: “We have observed the calculated attempt to pitch the Yorubas against the Igbos with the ethnic colouration that both tribes are fighting because Labour Party won Lagos State.

“We want to make it categorically clear that we have Yorubas who are supporting Obi like Obasanjo and Ayo Adebanjo.

“We are holding the Governor of Lagos State responsible for any calculated attack against innocent Igbo traders, we are holding MC Oloumo and the Oba of Lagos if anything happens to traders and the community in Lagos State.

“The Governor of Lagos State has failed in his duties to protect the lives and properties of the people of the state, and we hereby, call him to resign honourably for failing to perform his duties.

“The attack of Igbos in various parts of Lagos State is an act of cowardice and a sad reality that he has lost control of Lagos State

“They are preparing to unleash more terror on Igbo community ahead of the March governorship election. We are telling Lagodisns that since the governor has failed in his statutory obligations to protect them should vote him out, except he apologizes and ensure the protection of lives and properties.

“Also, we are telling Igbos communities in Lagos that self-defence and determination is a universal law, they should never allow what happened in 1993 to happen in 2023 when Abiola lost the election and Igbos became the victim.

“Igbos must rise up and defend themselves, they should be peaceful, calm and never be involved in troublemaking, but if trouble comes to their doorstep, they should rise up and defend themselves.

“They should never instigate any crisis where they are; as Nigerians, they should rise up and bravely defend themselves wherever they are.

“The message is very clear; they should be law-abiding citizens but defend

Naira redesign: Sanwo-Olu decries extortive practice by PoS operators

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed displeasure over the extortive practices by Point of Sale (PoS) operators, as well as petrol station attendants.

Sanwo-Olu said this while addressing newsmen on the current situation caused by the Naira redesign in the country, on Saturday at the Lagos House, Marina.

He said that due to the situation, the operators had become extortive.

Sanwo-Olu appealed to those involved in such behaviour to desist from such sharp practices.

”We have noticed with dismay the rampant incidents surrounding some of the players in the financial services value chain (PoS agents/operators); as well as petrol station attendants.

”They have taken the current challenges to mean an opportunity to extort hard-working and law-abiding Lagosians with extortionate service charges on funds withdrawal and sale of PMS.

”It is especially in difficult times like these that we all need to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper and do everything we can to contribute to lessening the hardships faced by our fellow Lagosians.

”This is not the period to sacrifice empathy, compassion, and humanity on the altar of profit making,” the governor said.

He urged Lagos residents to resist the opportunists who sought to take advantage of the anger and frustration that were being felt to hijack the situation and foment trouble.

RIVERS: What Wike told Tinubu, Shettima on their courtesy visit

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, his running mate, Kashim Shettima, and the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu have paid a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Wike, during the meeting on Wednesday, urged Tinubu to prevail on the Federal Government to ensure that the 2023 general election is not truncated.

He noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s flagrant disregard for the Supreme Court order on the naira swap policy should worry the APC-led Federal Government, particularly as the 2023 general elections draw nearer.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Kelbin Ebiri, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday night.

RIVERS: What Wike told Tinubu, Shettima on their courtesy visit

On Tinubu’s entourage were, the governors of Kebbi, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), David Umahi (Ebony), former Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, Tony Okocha and others.

Governor Wike, who thanked God that the APC presidential rally in the state was devoid of violence, however, expressed reservation whether the APC-led Federal Government was interested in conducting the 2023 general elections particularly with the lingering naira swap crisis.

Wike stated, “Do you people really want this election to take place or not; or you have an agenda to truncate this election. I don’t know. Look at what is happening in Oyo today, Edo, Delta. See what is going on.”

The Rivers State governor maintained that the abrupt naira redesign and its implementation by the Central Bank of Nigeria smacks of pure politics. He insisted that irrespective of the politics, the ruling APC must ensure that the general elections hold.

He added, “I believe your party should make sure this election holds. You people are in power, ensure that this election holds. Nobody can solve the issue of corruption in two-three months. It is not possible. This thing is purely politically motivated.”

Governor Wike took a swipe on the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for disregarding the Supreme Court judgement on the old naira deadline

“How can you people be in government at this time, governor of a Central Bank disrespecting the Supreme Court. Where has it happened in any democracy. Governor of Central Bank thinking of whether to obey Supreme Court order. Where has it happened?

“I am not talking about Federal High Court order, not Court Of Appeal, I am talking about Supreme Court. Supreme Court said do not do this and everybody is folding hand begging Central Bank to obey Supreme Court order.

“Which country has it ever happened? When the order of Supreme Court is not obeyed, what are you telling the poor people on the streets.”

Sanwo-Olu signs N1.76tn Lagos ”Budget of Continuity” into Law

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Friday in Ikeja signed the state’s N1.77 trillion ”Budget of Continuity” into law.

Assenting to the budget, Sanwo-Olu said that it was to consolidate development strides of his administration and satisfy the yearnings of the residents.

He said that the fiscal document not only ”aggressively” focused on completing ongoing capital projects, but would also expand intervention programmes and intensify social support to citizens and their means of livelihoods.

Sanwo-Olu said that the spendings would further demonstrate his government’s determination to scale up good governance and quality service to the citizens through the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda.

According to him, the budget will propel the state to higher level of fiscal growth and social development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2023 Appropriation Bill has a capital expenditure of N1.019 trillion, representing 58 per cent of the 2023 budget.

The recurrent expenditure, representing 42 per cent, is N748 billion, which included personnel cost, overhead and debt services.

He said that the implementation of the budget would see to completion of various ongoing capital projects, including the final construction phase of the 37-kilometre Lagos Red Rail Line from Agbado to Ebute Metta.

Sanwo-Olu said that the funding for the second phase of the Blue Line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko had equally been approved in the budget.

He also said that the Ojo General Hospital project and mental health facility in Ketu-Ereyun being undertaken by the state government would race to completion.

Sanwo-Olu said that the contractors handling various road and school construction projects in Badagry, Amuwo Odofin, Ikorodu and Eti-Osa could now have access to funds to deliver the projects.

“I am delighted to assent to the 2023 Appropriation Bill transmitted to me after it was passed by the House of Assembly.

“The budget went through a rigorous review and passed through all the relevant statutory channels required, before we now have a live document that can be implemented.

“This is a budget that speaks to the aspirations and the needs of Lagosians.

“The budget is audacious and its size is a reflection of the confidence our citizens repose in us.

“It is also a significant improvement in the discharge of the citizens’ civic responsibility in the areas of taxes and levies that are due to the government.

“I give assurance of our commitment to prudent implementation and improvement in service delivery that will bring about more dividends of good governance,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu commended the leaders and members of the House of Assembly for the timely consideration and independent ratification done on the document.

He promised to raise the level of implementation of the Appropriation Law, pledging that the ongoing electioneering would not slow down governance process.

Sanwo-Olu said that though Lagos state had the highest budget among the federating units, but its size was a far cry from the actual number that should had been proposed, which befitted Lagos developmental aspiration.

He said the state could do a lot more if the citizens would partner the government by committing to pay their taxes.

“Lagosians must know that our government is committing to protecting their lives and their means of livelihoods.

“We can provide a lot more opportunities for our citizens in transportation, education, public health and other areas of human endeavour. To achieve these objectives, residents must see the real partner in us.

“We have seen the growth across the city and opportunities for business. Our budget must speak to this growth.

“Lagos needs to be in the comity of cities that can take opportunities to another level and ventilate its economic potential,” the governor said.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Sam Egube said that the budgetary items reflected the wishes of the residents across the state’s five traditional divisions.

Egube said that the coatings were in alignment with long-term sector objectives and in agreement with Lagos State Development Plan.

The Chairman, House Appropriation Committee, Mr Gbolahan Yishau thanked the governor for bringing an ”implementable document” to the House.

Yishau said that the fiscal document was diligently reviewed before the final draft was approved.
