What Nigeria must do to end insecurity – Saraki

Sen. Bukola Saraki, the Presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, said he would adopt technology to end banditry and other insecurity sources when voted to power.

Saraki made the statement on Thursday while interacting with delegates of Taraba PDP in Jalingo.

He said he was in the state to seek the support of Taraba delegates to be Nigeria’s next President.

“The country has gone through so much and we need to do things differently.

“We can not have the same type of leaders tomorrow as we have today. 2023 is about the future of this country and our children.

“This country has been so divided and we can’t afford to use sentiments to vote.

“We must do it right for the sake of those who died for no fault of theirs.

“We have been through so much in this country and we must apply for competence to rescue Nigeria.

“I am the only aspirant who has come out with policy direction to solve Nigeria’s problem because its bad leadership is responsible for insecurity.

“We need a President that understands the economy and has vision for investment as my agriculture revolution in Kwara remains the largest livestock producer in Nigeria till today,” he said.

Saraki promised to boost investment in mining and agriculture, to create empowerment for Nigerians

In his response, Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba, said saraki was competent and courageous.

” We need someone that will fix insecurity and bring investment.

“Saraki has good credentials to lead Nigeria and I urge the delegates and Nigerians to vote for competence,” he said.

Support your prayers with positive attitude, Saraki urges Muslims

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerians to support their prayers for the country with positive attitude.

The former Kwara State number one citizen congratulated Nigerian Muslims for the successful completion of this year’s (1443 AH) Ramadan fasting and also for the Eid-el-Fitri celebration.

Saraki in a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, head of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office, advised Nigerians to support the numerous prayers they have made during the holy month concerning their nation with positive attitudes which are necessary for nation-building.

He added that Ramadan symbolizes almighty Allah’s way of teaching humanity the attitude of living a virtuous life where people keep away from all forms of impurities and experience denial of several forms of comfort to appreciate what the less privileged experience as they suffer deprivation.

“While all of us seek to stay away from activities that are injurious to our health, our nation, and our fellow human beings and seek to live a decent life during the fasting period, we should make this solemn and God-fearing way of life a permanent thing.

“We should all extend the lessons of Ramadan to the way we live with our neighbours. We should seek peace at all times, promote tolerance of people who speak different languages with us, and worship God in different ways. We should respect the laws of the land and exhibit discipline at all times. Our level of patriotism should increase after Ramadan. That is what this just ended holy month signifies.

“I do not doubt that millions of Nigerian Muslims who just completed their fasting as well as their Christian brothers and sisters who earlier this month completed the Lent period of fasting prayed for Nigeria. It is the cumulation of all these prayers that have kept this country going despite all the serious challenges confronting her. I believe God will decisively intervene in the affairs of our country and save her from all the existential threats.

“As the 2023 general election approaches and we gradually commence the process that will lead us to the polls when we will have the opportunity to elect new leaders that will save the country, I pray for genuine guidance from Almighty God for all the citizens of this country, particularly the ones that are of voting age. May we choose right and may our choice ultimately lead to the redemption, rebuilding, rededication, development, and fixing of the country”, Saraki prays.

Consensus: Our endorsement as northern presidential candidates is God’s doing – says Bauchi governor

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has ascribed his endorsement as northern presidential consensus candidate of the PDP alongside former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, as the work of God.

The Northern PDP Elders Forum led by Prof. Ango Abdullahi, on Friday, endorsed Saraki and Mohammed as the consensus candidates ahead of the 2023 presidential primaries of the party.

The Forum said its decision was based on certain criteria adopted in assessing the four presidential hopeful from the north who presented themselves for the exercise.

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, who is also one of the candidates rejected the endorsement of Saraki and Mohammed as consensus candidates of the region.

However, Mohammed told newsmen on Saturday in Bauchi that he was not aware on how the forum arrived at its decision.

He lauded the Forum for a thorough and tremendous job, adding that, “Just yesterday, I was elected as one of the consensus candidates for the next presidential election.

“People may take it as something influenced or that we have gone to ask people to give us the recognition, far from that, it is a mark of recognition and the work of God that I will not take for granted.

“This recognition on my humble self and Sen. Bukola Saraki after we decided to do consensus with two others, and came on bracket after due consultations with other elders in the north.

“We have been asked to further consult within ourselves and other aspirants within the country so that we can minimise rancour, division and any unpleasantries for us to come out with a candidate that would win the election for the PDP.

“We have taken it as a responsibility and we are calling on others even those who didn’t make it in the consensus to come and join hands with us and our southern compatriots so as to do it with minimal rancour and come out of the primaries and selection that would produce the best in terms of leadership recruitment in the country.”

He said the best candidate in the party might had not bought the form or stepped out to indicate his interest, noting that he was one of the best that had so far stepped out and shown interest, hence, the recognition by the northern elders forum.

“This is part of politicking, we are not the only ones. There is also the Waziri Adamawa who has not even participated in the consensus. It is part of political engineering.

“There are other aspirants from the South but we must work through and make sure that we come to a converging point including the group of Alhaji Sule Lamido.

“We will make sure that we get their endorsement and confidence, and I assure you that we are going to come out of this.”

2023: Saraki, other PDP presidential aspirants settle for consensus arrangement

At least four presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party say they will accept a consensus arrangement to position the party for victory in 2023.

The aspirants made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the outcome of their visit to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia in his Umuobiakwa country home in Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) on Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of other aspirants, the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said the decision was informed by their determination to make Nigeria better.

He said that the lives and welfare of Nigerians were more important than the individual ambition of every aspirant.

He said said: “Nigerians are going through hardship and insecurity.

“These are the events that are happening in the country that make some of us to see that we are doing the right thing.

“Let me reassure Nigerians that we are very determined and driven by the determination to make this country work.

“If this is the sacrifice that we will make to turn things around in Nigeria, we want to let Nigerians know that we are willing to make it.”

Saraki said that they were in Abia to seek the governor’s support to ensure that the consensus arrangement would work so that PDP would win the general elections.

He further said that Ikpeazu’s encouraging words had inspired and further motivated them to move forward.

Saraki said that this was the first time aspirants would come together on their own to adopt a consensus arrangement.

He said that although the initiative was a tough challenge, they were convinced it would make Nigeria work.

“We are heading for Enugu to see the governor of the state and by the time we have visited Enugu we would have completed the tour of the 19 PDP states and the governors have shown their support,” he said.

Responding, Ikpeazu expressed delight over the development, saying that it had rekindled his hope in the emergence of a new Nigeria.

He described the consensus arrangement as “a commendable and altruistic initiative”.

He said it was borne out of the desire to forge an alliance to transform the nation.

“I want to say that you have my commitment and cooperation to move on and I will do my bit to ensure that all of us come together.

“The survival of our country, interest of the poor masses of the country should come before whatever personal agenda we have.

“I am happy that Nigeria has patriots and leaders, who are capable of putting Nigeria first,” the governor said.

He promised to support efforts aimed at uniting the party and helping it to present a common front during the upcoming elections.

The aspirants included Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

  • 2023: Saraki is the Candidate for Youth – By Ejiro Umukoro

2023: Saraki is the Candidate for Youth – By Ejiro Umukoro

    By Ejiro Umukoro

Nigeria’s large youth population offers great opportunity. However, recent Presidents have neglected their responsibilities to create jobs and better future for young people. This situation will only get worse, unless we elect fresh leadership in 2023 which can change the course of the nation. Dr Bukola Saraki is the only candidate who has proven his ability and resolve to be a leader for young people, and all of Nigeria, writes Ejiro Umukoro.

Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in the world. Around 60% of the population is estimated to be between 18 and 35. This makes Nigeria more youthful than all of the top three global economic powers – the US, China and Japan.

Our youth population provides an opportunity to create a strong, flourishing workforce, bolstering a strong economy that enables Nigeria to reach its potential.

However, years of poor, unenterprising leadership has led to the neglect of our young people, and the betrayal of Nigeria’s potential. Nearly 40 percent of Nigeria’s youth is unemployed. Hard-working young Nigerians are barred from success because of lack of job opportunities, a poor education system, and the absence of protective measures against crime and drug abuse. By neglecting our youth, leaders have fed other problems in the country, creating effective recruitment pools for criminal groups and gangs.

If we continue to be led by the same type of leaders, with the same old, tired ideas of leadership, this situation will only get worse. Particularly as we face the worst recession in 40 years due to the pandemic, there is more pressure than ever to put Nigeria on the right track.

That is why the 2023 election is so important. We have the chance to elect a leader who can provide real solutions and give young people the future they deserve.

Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki is the only candidate with demonstrated support for young people. Former President of the Senate from 2015 to 2019 and former two-term governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011, Dr Saraki’s record of achievement for young people is unrivalled by any other presidential aspirant.

While governor of Kwara State, Dr Saraki introduced the Clean & Green Initiative in 2003. This waste management and environmental beautification project took care of surface-level sanitation and drainage protection to prevent flooding and erosion from rain. The initiative played a role in quelling women and youth unemployment by creating 2000 jobs for youths.

Vocational activity is a key means of keeping young people away from lives of crime and violence. This is why Dr Saraki led the Kwara State government’s establishment of the first ever football training institution in Nigeria, namely the Football College of Excellence, now the Kwara Football Academy (KFA), to identify and train young talents.

Dr Saraki has always realised the importance of keeping in touch with the voices of young people. When Senate President, 75 percent of people working under Dr Saraki were under the age of 35 – from special advisors to legislative aides.

This pro-youth mindset is reflected is his legislative action when Senate President. Dr Saraki has always shown commitment to improving Nigeria’s education system as a means of bettering youth prospects. The Universal Basic Education programme was first introduced in 1999, aiming to provide “free universal and compulsory basic education for every Nigerian child aged 6-15 years.” Dr Saraki led the Senate’s amendments to the 2004 UBE Act. These amendments made primary and secondary education free and compulsory across the country, eased pressure on states in accessing funds for infrastructure development, increasing the budgetary allocation to UBE Commission by the Federal Government from 100 percent to 10 percent and provided for stiffer penalties for parents who fail to enrol a child in school.

Drug abuse is one of the worst afflictions facing young Nigerians. To tackle this, the Senate under Dr Saraki passed The Drug Control Bill, which seeks to clarify the mandate and strengthen the capacity of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), as well as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC). The bill also seeks to establish a central mechanism to facilitate collaboration among law enforcement, regulatory and public health authorities in line with the National Drug Control Policy.

The Senate under Dr Saraki in 2017 passed the ‘Not Too Young to Run Bill’, to remove barriers to politics for youth. One of the greatest, and boldest, actions to open the political space to young people to air their views and become a positive force for national development. The bill reduced the age qualification for president from 40 to 35, governor from 35 to 30, senator from 35 to 30, House of Representatives membership from 30 to 25 and state house of assembly membership from 30 to 25.

Nigeria is at a crossroads, where our choice at the ballot box decides the future of Nigerian youth. Dr Saraki is the only choice who will provide a better future for young Nigerians, and steer our country in the right direction.

2023: Saraki cttee suggest how to pick people who’ll conduct PDP primaries

Senator Bukola Saraki led National Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, NRSC has advised PDP NWC to ensure that only credible people who will be fair, adhere strictly to democratic tenets are picked to conduct primaries.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports Saraki made this disclosure when he presented the findings of the committee to PDP Chairman and NWC members on Wednesday.

Hear him: “credible people who will be fair, adhere strictly to democratic tenets are picked to conduct primaries – Saraki

“Chairman, we need to point out that while so much has been done there is still so much to do. Our party has recently commenced the journey towards electing candidates to contest on the party’s platform in the 2023 general elections at the presidential, gubernatorial, national assembly, and state houses of assembly levels.

“We have discovered that the conduct of primaries to elect candidates to represent the party has been a source of great intra-party conflict and friction in the past, resulting in the PDP being severely weakened and hampering its chances of success in previous elections.

“We believe that you and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) are men and women of great courage and integrity who have displayed a commitment to our great party, its ideals, and values. We want to advise that the party leadership should at all times adhere to the principles of equity, justice, fairness, good conscience, and inclusiveness.

“The leadership should always be transparent in taking decisions such that those not favoured by the decision can at least see that they have been given a fair hearing and those whose cases prevail can see that they won on merit, therefore having to be magnanimous in victory.

“We urge you, Mr. Chairman, and other members of the NWC to ensure a thorough and extensive scrutiny process in the selection of the people who will be sent to go and conduct the primary elections in the various states as we prepare for the 2023 elections.

“They must be people who will be fair to all and adhere strictly to democratic tenets. Sanctions should be meted out to those of them who by their actions create a crisis in any state.

“Also, we need to mention that time did not allow us to dwell much on the area of strategy. We had so much to do in the area of reconciliation. It is therefore our recommendation that the party leadership should explore the idea of setting up a standing committee to advise it from time to time on the issue of strategy, particularly as we prepare for the 2023 general elections.

“Let us commend the efforts of the NWC on some of the key steps you have taken to reposition our great party, particularly as they are in line with the recommendations of this committee which you will find in the report we are submitting to you. One example of such great steps is the revival of the defunct People’s Democratic Institute (PDI) to serve as a policy think-tank and centre of the party.

” My colleagues and I are grateful for the opportunity to be of service to our great party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, its leadership, all its members, and by extension, the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who have long desired peaceful resolution of the crises plaguing the party and our party’s return to the helm of the ship of the Nigerian state to successfully navigate the nation and her people towards sustainable socio-economic and political development.

BEING THE TEXT OF SPEECH BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL RECONCILIATION AND STRATEGY COMMITTEE (NRSC), DR. ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI, CON, ON THE OCCASION OF THE SUBMISSION OF THE COMMITTEE’S REPORT TO THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP), DR. IYORCHIA AYU ON APRIL 6, 2022

    2. The National Reconciliation and Strategy Committee (NRSC) was created after a resolution approving its establishment and Terms of Reference was passed at the 90th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great party on November 23rd, 2020. At its inception, the Committee was tasked with the mandate of identifying and resolving disputes at various levels of the party structure and reconciling aggrieved members to promote cohesion and strengthen the party structure. Shortly after its inauguration, the Committee’s mandate was expanded to include the design of progressive strategies as means of reinventing the all-inclusive and broad-based foundation of our party as a basis for success in future elections and the delivery of real solutions to the problems confronting our country.

    3. Upon its establishment, I was privileged to be named Chairman to head a Committee comprising men and a woman of integrity and influence drawn from the six geo-political zones namely former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Senator Liyel Imoke; former Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema; former Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo; and former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, with Hon. Linus Okorie as Secretary.

    4. The NRSC was established against the backdrop of the poor state of our party as demonstrated by the intra-party conflict in many state chapters, disillusionment with the party by many members and by the Nigerian populace, and the inability to attract new members, and the loss of key stakeholders. Our party was described in the media as “hemorrhaging”, at the time.

    5. Together with these men and woman, we have traversed the length and breadth of our dear country meeting with critical stakeholders of our party to identify the stress points that have caused conflict at various levels of the party structure and work together with these stakeholders to resolve them. While doing so, we have repeated the same message to stakeholders of our great party everywhere – that it is only with great patience, forgiveness, and the spirit of sacrifice for the greater good that we can rebuild our party, restore the confidence of the Nigerian people in us and set out on the important task of rescuing our country. Everywhere we have gone, we have repeated Abraham Lincoln’s wise words “We are not enemies but friends. We must not be enemies. Though our passions may strain, they must not break the bonds of our affections.”

    6. Mr. Chairman, our committee is pleased to report that this message was well-received across the country and formed the foundation for the resolution of drawn-out crises between rival groups and the reconciliation of discontented stakeholders. We are pleased to report that our committee was able to work with stakeholders in several state chapters like Borno, Ogun, Ondo, Niger, and Plateau to resolve the crisis that had plagued the party for years. In other states like Cross Rivers and Yobe, we have been able to work with stakeholders to rebuild the firm foundation of our party after some members defected. And in some states, while we may not have been able to completely resolve the crises, we have been able to get contending factions to engage in dialogue and set them on a sure path to genuine reconciliation.

    7. In the course of our activities, we also met with critical stakeholders and organs of our party and listened to their grievances. We received their suggestions on how best to remodel and reposition our party as the best vehicle for the delivery of sustainable development and good governance to Nigerians.

    8. On the strategy side, it was the committee that recommended to the last NWC the need to slash the nomination and expression of interest fees payable by youths who are aspiring to various public offices in other to encourage members in that demographic to seek elective offices on the platform of the party. It should be recalled that our recommendation came after we had a meeting with the youth leaders and other youth groups within the party. That recommendation which was accepted by the NWC has since been copied by other parties.

    9. Mr. Chairman, the report we have come to submit today contains a detailed breakdown of our deliberations with the key stakeholders, members, and organs of our party; the issues that were raised, and our recommendations to ensure that these issues are conclusively resolved to the benefit of our great party.

    10. Mr. Chairman, we need to point out that while so much has been done there is still so much to do. Our party has recently commenced the journey towards electing candidates to contest on the party’s platform in the 2023 general elections at the presidential, gubernatorial, national assembly, and state houses of assembly levels. We have discovered that the conduct of primaries to elect candidates to represent the party has been a source of great intra-party conflict and friction in the past, resulting in the PDP being severely weakened and hampering its chances of success in previous elections.

It is therefore our recommendation that the party leadership should explore the idea of setting up a standing committee to advise it from time to time on the issue of strategy, particularly as we prepare for the 2023 general elections.

    14. One example of such great steps is the revival of the defunct People’s Democratic Institute (PDI) to serve as a policy think-tank and centre of the party.

2023 Presidency: Consensus candidacy will foster national unity – Saraki

Former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said consensus candidacy for Peoples Democratic Party PDP will foster national unity in Nigeria.

Saraki made this disclosure in Asaba on Monday when he led other aspirants, including Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and former Managing Director of FSB International Bank Plc, Alhaji Mohammad Hayatu-Deen, on a consultative visit to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa at Government House, Asaba.

He said that Nigeria was in dire need of competent leaders to reverse the country’s slide into poverty, insecurity and anarchy.

He stated that Nigeria was the largest economy in Africa under the PDP, but regretted that the country was now the poverty and kidnapping capital of the world under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

He called on stakeholders of the party to support consensus arrangement to ensure that the party remained united and able to rescue the country from maladministration.

According to Saraki, we are here, the four of us, to discuss with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on how to build consensus for our party ahead of the presidential election.

“We had a very useful discussion with the governor; we have decided to come as four of us who are aspiring to be president on the PDP platform.

“Your Excellency, you know your reputation for the PDP and the country is always first in your mind and ever since, when there is assignment that has to do with ensuring unity of the party you have always been called upon.

“That’s why we are here to meet with you and share with you what we have been trying to do.

“The four of us have been meeting and we came up with this idea that in the interest of the party, that we should come together and look at a consensus arrangement.

“This is important because we believe that the country needs unity. We are all eminently qualified to lead this country but we believe that only one person will lead and that person needs everybody to make Nigeria better and to fix this country,” he said.

Saraki, also a former governor of Kwara, stated that the interest of the aspirants was second to that of the country, adding that “as somebody who has always shown that as well, we have come here today as our first visit to the southern part of the country.

“This also goes to show that this consensus arrangement is not just about the issue of the North but about Nigeria and to carry you along on what we intend to do.

“We have shared our thoughts with you and you have also shared your ideas with us on what we need to do and we can assure you that we are committed to this consensus process.

“This consensus is needed so that at the end of the day, PDP will be united to provide leadership for this country because the way the country is today, we need to fix it, we need to tackle the issue of insecurity and unemployment.”

Responding, Okowa thanked the visitors for coming to intimate him on their plans, and said that consensus candidacy was indeed in the best interest of the unity of the party and the country.

He underscored the importance of building consensus to solve the current challenges bedeviling the nation.

“I truly want to welcome you to Delta state. I have listened to you and the fact that you have started to meet together to think of the best way possible for us to get out of the very difficult situation we have found ourselves as a country, is very heart-warming.

“I thank you for putting yourselves together to educate the rest of us from across various states on the need for us to build a consensus.

“I believe that it will reduce acrimony and help to position us as a party in order to help to compete favourably and win the 2023 elections.

“There’s no doubt that God has favoured us and placed us in a good position to be able to win the elections but we need to also take some human actions that will enable us give strength to ourselves.

“This action that four of you have taken today is actually a step in the right direction. It will strengthen us and pull us together.

“It is my prayer that God will help you achieve this consensus that you seek to build because in that consensus, we will be united as a party, which will give a lot of hope to Nigerians, that truly, PDP is working the talk.

“So I truly want to appreciate you for this visit and urge that you work hard towards the building of this consensus and that of the party too.

“I think that this is the kind of thing that we need at the moment and as you take this step forward, may God give you the strength to be able to engage the rest of our brothers across this nation.

“We hope that at the end, we would be in a place to say yes, we have really strengthened the PDP and that we are in a better position than other political parties to compete,” Okowa stated

Pray for positive interventions in Nigeria during Ramadan, Saraki begs Muslims

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has congratulated Nigerian Muslims for witnessing the commencement of this year’s Ramadan fasting and urged them to pray to Almighty Allah to make positive interventions in the affairs of the country.

In a statement signed by the Head of his Media Office, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that between the last Ramadan and now, a series of events had happened that shook the world, including the continued existence of cases of COVID-19 which had in the past affected several aspects of religious rites.

“I congratulate all my Muslim brothers and sisters for the successful commencement of this year’s fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. We have many reasons to be grateful to almighty Allah, particularly for preserving us till this moment. We are happy that except in a few places around the world, this year, the pandemic has reduced tremendously.

“It is important that Muslims in Nigeria dedicate more time to pray for our dear country in this holy month. We should pray for Allah’s intervention as the entire country is suffering from security and economic crises. We should also be ready to play a key role in finding new directions toward fixing our country.

“I enjoin all Muslims to imbibe the essence of fasting which is for the privileged ones to deny themselves so as to experience the sense of hunger and deprivation that the less privileged in our society go through regularly. The privileged ones should therefore be their brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.

“Our society will be better if we all work to protect the needy and the weak ones among us. May Allah grants us the good faith to perform the fasting the way He has commanded and accept it as an act of ibadah.”, Saraki stated.
