Senate Crisis: CSOs want ex-leaders to call Saraki to order

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Faith Based Organizations and NGOs under the auspices of Stand Up 4 Nigeria {SUN},has called on former Nigerian Presidents, Statesmen and nationalists to prevail on the Senate led by Dr Bukola Saraki to retrace its steps before plunging the nation into international embarrassment that has never been witnessed in the history of the country.

SUN led by its national preaident, Evangelist Sunday Attah while briefing journalists in Abuja said the suspension of Senator Ali Ndume from the house is anti-democratic and must be reversed immediately to avoid the wrath of the Nigerian people in days to come.

He urged the Senate to immediately reverse the decision to suspend Senator Ndume, as well as commence the process for the confirmation of the nominees for Resident Electoral Commissioners.

He said in the last two weeks, Nigerians ha watcged in awe as the Senate under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki practically gave a red card to the anti-corruption war when they started using the confirmation of nominees as bargaining chips to frustrate reforms that were promised by the government.

Attah described the action by the senate as a blow from which many Nigerians are still reeling as they cannot fathom why people who claim to represent them are embarking on anti-people moves.
He said, “Not only did they engage in anti-people activities, the federal lawmakers shamelessly blackmailed President Muhammadu Buhari by refusing to consider the confirmation of 27 resident electoral commissioners when they know that these nominees needed to resume and familiarized themselves with their duties in time for the next general elections.

“Through its Ethics Committee, the Senate, in the most brazen case of make believe to have ever occurred in any elected parliament cleared one of their own, Senator Daniel Jonah Melaiye Dino Melaye of certificate scandal after arm twisting the leadership of his supposed alma mata to give a favorable testimony. The same farcical panel cleared Saraki of complicity of involvement in the armoured Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) impounded by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) earlier in the year. Perhaps the Hameed Ali must wear uniform saga has been made clearer with this development.”

He said in the most bizarre treatment of a whistleblower by a parliament on record, the Senate under Saraki, which should have been a bastion against corruption, proceeded to suspend former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume ostensibly because he dared broke rank to expose the Senator Daniel Jonah Melaiye Dino Melaye’s qualification fiasco and Saraki’s SUV Custom clearance mess.
Attah said while the Senate has engaged in all these theatrics, the 2017 budget is in limbo because the senators do care how their actions is affecting the rest of Nigerians.

He said the actions of the Senate is a dangerous precedence that Nigerians must immediately unite and rise up against because it is guaranteed to destroy all that we have laboured for if not arrested in time.

He said, “Stand Up Nigeria therefore demands that the Senate undo the wrong actions it has taken in the time under consideration. To this end:

The federal lawmakers must withdraw the summons to Professor Itsey Sagay and apologize for attempting to intimidate him from exercising his freedom of expression.
The senate must immediately lift the suspension it slammed on Senator Ali Ndume and in addition tender unreserved apology to him for the ridicule it attempted to expose him to.
The process for the confirmation of the nominees for Resident Electoral Commissioners must resume without any unnecessary conditions attached.”

He said where the Senate fails to meet these set out demands, the coalition will not relent as was the case in the past when they had cause to call for mass action against the National Assembly.

He said Stand Up Nigeria shall coordinate with this mass of displeased Nigerians to bring the Senate as an institution to a desperately deserved inglorious end.

He said, “we therefore urge all Nigerians to come out in Lagos and Abuja on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for a peaceful protest to shut down the Senate.
We call on former Nigerian Presidents, former Senate Presidents and all men of goodwill to help the Senate in finding its lost glory before the doom of the Senate consumes our democracy. As we had set out earlier, recent activities by the Senate have since shown that these men are more after their ego and greed than the interest of the masses which they have been elected to serve.

“To this end, we are urging Nigerians that it is time to shift gear. Years of asking the Senate to be accountable and prove itself as a gathering of matured men and women have yielded no positive results. If anything, the predisposition of these federal lawmakers to becoming more crime ridden worsened over the years. We must therefore begin the process of scrapping the Senate since it has proven itself as a conduit for waste and official cover for blackmailers.

He urged Nigerians to rise up and speak up, saying that, “When we comment in the social media space, when we take to the streets to protest and when we engage as influencers the singular demand should be the eradication of Senate as it is no longer needed.”

He said Nigerians must ensure that every single Senator that has been part of the criminality going on in the red chamber is not allowed to return to Abuja in 2019 to continue this madness.

  • Facebook lauds Saraki for opening up National Assembly

The Office of the President of the Senate is indeed delighted at the endorsement of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki for opening up the activities of the 8th Nigerian National Assembly through various channels, especially the daily Facebook Live Video streaming from Senate Plenary.

The Chief Product Officer and Company Lead on Product Management and Development of Facebook, Christopher Cox, gave the commendation while speaking at The Future of Media Keynote Session and opening of the annual Social Media Week held at the Landmark Centre in Lagos.

Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, in a statement in Abuja, said: “This commendation reinforces one of the core mandates of the Senate President to the New Media unit, which is to bridge the gap between the Senate and Nigerians.

“The Nigerian Senate facebook live streaming has an average view of four million unique clicks monthly for the plenary live feeds and we will be expanding coverage to courtesy calls, committee hearings and oversights in the next few months,” he said.

Omishore added: “You would recall that Saraki personally attended the 2016 edition of the Social Media Week in company of Senators Foster Ogola, Dino Melaye and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi amongst others, where he spoke on the topic: “Promoting Online Communities to improve Participatory Governance” and subsequently had a no-holds-barred interaction with traditional and social media enthusiasts on how to continue bridging the gap between elected government officials and Nigerians passionate about the use of social media for political engagement.

“We are encouraged to do more with this commendation and wish to kindly reiterate and assure our friends, from the online community and beyond, of the commitment of the Senate President towards ensuring that the 8th National Assembly continues to witness improved transparency and accountability on government functions and people participation,” he said.

Saraki challenges FG to live up to expectation in healthcare service delivery

…Commissions hospital built by Senator Mohammad in Yobe

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Saturday urged the Federal Government, States and Local governments to ensure efficiency in all healthcare facilities across the country for the benefit of the masses.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, made the call during the commissioning and handing over of an 80-bed hospital built by Senator Hassan Mohammed and donated to the Federal Government in Potiskum, Yobe State.

The Senate President noted that with the hospital, the residents of Potiskum will no longer need to travel to neighbouring states for treatment.

In his words: “This is why I was committed to helping Senator Mohammad with getting the support of the Federal Government in the running of this hospital so that its benefits to the people of Potiskum and Yobe at large, are guaranteed and sustained.

“This is the kind of leaders we find today in the Nigerian Senate; people who are abandoning the practice of yesterday’s politics. It must be strongly lauded that this is a PDP Senator, in an APC led state, donating this edifice to an APC government.

“The lesson is that what matters is not the political party or the government in power but the love you have for your people and your connection with them. I challenge the Federal Government to ensure that this hospital that has been entrusted to them is adequately taken care of, and is run with the highest level of professionalism and efficiency possible.

“I implore the Ministry of Health to ensure this Hospital continues to receive priority attention both in management and in resource. I expect that this hospital will be run with the highest degree of efficiency possible; and to the good people of Potiskum, I encourage you to use this hospital and demand efficiency in service from the management,” he said.

He added that the Senator chose to make a difference in the lives of people in his Senatorial District by building the hospital. “To build such an imposing edifice at a time like this, is not a mean feat,” Saraki said. “To build and then transfer by donation, a hospital of this size and capacity to a different government in power other than his party, freely, for the service of his people is a signature statement of extraordinary leadership,” he said.

The Senate President said he was moved when Senator Mohammad told him that he preferred to build a befitting hospital than the typical practice of sharing money to constituents. He said that with the hospital, the lives of many children and that of many pregnant women will be saved.

During a visit by the Senate President to the Palace of the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed Abale, the Emir expressed gratitude to Saraki and his colleagues for making possible the passage of a law creating the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) which he said will help to rebuild and restore the areas ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Emir said his Emirate was a popular commercial centre before the advent of insurgency and sought for the help of all Nigerians to bring back prosperity and normalcy in the area. He thereafter presented a horse to the Senate President as a mark of honour and appreciation.

The Senate President who thanked the Emir for the gift said from his experience in the banking sector he could attest to the fact that Borno and Yobe States were major trading centres which all banks could not ignore before the outbreak of the crisis and that he was committed to the rebuilding of the area.

He noted that his interest in bring life back to normalcy in the area made him to quickly intervene to ensure that the Federal Government assumed responsibility for the running of the newly commissioned hospital.

We feel your pains, things can’t continue this way, Saraki assures labour leaders

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has appealed to protesting labour unions in the country to bear with the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government on the challenges currently facing the country in virtually all sectors.

Saraki spoke on Thursday when he met with the leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC in Abuja.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier reported of a simultaneous protest staged by the leadership of both unions and other affiliated unions going on in Lagos and Abuja.

The NLC Chairman, Mr Ayuba Wabba, said that the groups were protesting the delay in the upward review of minimum wage amidst increasing cost of items in the country.

“We are here to demand for good governance and express our support in the fight against corruption.

“More importantly, we demand for respect for rule of law, greater accountability and transparency in governance,’’ Wabba said.

He expressed worry that Nigerian workers had been the major victims of the fall-out of corruption and bad governance.

“Today the dollar rate is one Naira to 500 dollars and the salaries of Nigerian workers have remained the same.

“Therefore, we are here to urge the National Assembly to play an important role to ensure that life is made better for Nigerians.

“We cannot succeed if the fight against corruption does not succeed.

“We appreciate the efforts by the National Assembly to ensure financial autonomy for the local governments and this must be sustained because money meant for the local governments does not get there.’’

The NLC chairman further expressed concern that in spite of the bailout funds to states for workers’ salaries, “the living condition of workers have not been improved because many are not paid’’.

He explained that pensioners in the country were owed up to 77 months and called on the National Assembly to synergise with other arms of government to pay them.

Contributing, the TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama said that the inflation rate in the country was growing astronomically.

Kaigama said that it was time for governments at all tiers to go back to the drawing board to revive the country’s economy.

“Whatever it takes, we must review the structure of our economy.

“If we must have to kill corruption, the laws have to come from the National Assembly.

“Nigerians are hungry, the cost of living is high, no houses, no light and factories have gone comatose,’’ Kaigama said.

Responding, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said it was time to go into action towards addressing the numerous challenges confronting Nigerians.

According to him, we need to sit down and work out how to make necessary adjustments.

“It can’t continue this way, the exchange rate is high, cost of things in the market have gone high but only the workers’ salaries remain the same.

“By the next time we will meet, I will tell you what the National Assembly has done to improve the living condition of Nigerians,’’ Saraki said.
