The new traditional title holders are Sheikh Sulyman Onikijipa (Grand Mufty), Sheikh Yakub Aliagan (Sarkin Mallami), Sheikh Abdulkadir Oba Solagberu (Mallam Ubandoma), Alh. Alimi Abdurasaq (Matawale), Alh. Soliu Mustapha (Turaki), Alh. Muhammad Yakubu Gobir (Madaki), Alh. Abolakale Kawu Agaka (Dan Iyan, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje (Tafida) and Alh. “The new traditional title holders should see the conferment of titles on them as a challenge to work harder for unity, development and peace in the Emirate, in particular, and Kwara State, in general.

“The new traditional title holders have been selected among many qualified Ilorin indigenes and they now have the duty to justify the confidence reposed on them by the revered monarch who has perfectly played the role of a good father to all indigenes and residents of the Emirate, including other Nigerians of Kwara State origin.

“Once again, I congratulate the Emir and the new traditional title holders as I also welcome the new title holders into the Emirate council and pray that their appointment will further engender peace, security and development of Ilorin and Kwara State”, Saraki stated.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: Buhari, Lawan, Gbajabiamila, Saraki greet Muslims

Eid-el-Kabir: Buhari, Lawan, Gbajabiamila, Saraki greet Muslims

President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and a host of other influential Nigerians have sent congratulatory messages to Nigerians on this year’s occasion of Eid-el-Kabir.

In a statement by his media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President emphasised the significance of the celebration, and appealed to Muslims “to demonstrate the good virtues of Islam.

The President said: “Taking advantage of the celebration to exploit fellow citizens through outrageous prices of food and rams is inconsistent with the fine virtues of Islam.

“As practising believers, we shouldn’t seek obscene profits by making life difficult and miserable for others. We should not seek happiness at the expense of others. Remember that Islam is a religion of charity that urges us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

President Buhari added: “I urge all Muslims to continue to live in peace and harmony with their fellow Nigerians of other faiths in the spirit of peaceful coexistence. Let us pray for the progress of Nigeria at all times. Let us expose undesirable elements among us who are creating security problems for the country”, he said.

The Senate President on his part called on Nigerians and Muslims to work for peace, unity and progress of the country.

In a message, he said: I felicitate with all Nigerians and the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir.

“Every true Muslim is always grateful to Allah the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful for the privilege to celebrate Sallah, regardless of our circumstances.

“The best way to demonstrate our gratitude to Allah is to share His blessings with our neighbours and show love and kindness to all, as taught us by Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

“I also want to use the occasion to urge the faithful and all Nigerians to be steadfast in working and praying for the peace, unity and progress of our beloved country.

“The current challenges are painful but this is a passing phase in our historical process of nation-building.

“The government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is determined that we get the challenges behind us and steady our nation’s march to its manifest destiny of greatness.

“The Ninth Senate and entire National Assembly will continue to facilitate the legislative environment needed for the success of all the efforts at the public and private sectors targeted at the security, peace and prosperity of Nigeria.”

In a similar message, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila called for prayers and unity of purpose among Nigerians urging them to use the Eid-el-Kabir to pray for their leaders as they find solutions to the country’s problems.

Gbajabiamila said Nigerians must remain united and steadfast to be able to face the challenges confronting the country.

He called on Muslims to imbibe the habit of sacrifice and love for one another as characterised by the Holy Prophet, Muhammad (SAW).

Speaker Gbajabiamila said there is more that unites us as a people, hence the need for togetherness and peaceful coexistence.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, in a statement, said the Speaker urged Nigerians to conduct themselves in a patriotic manner as “we have no other country we can call our own than Nigeria.

He said: “I congratulate my Muslim compatriots for marking this year’s Eid-el-Kabir. This is a time for us to be more united as a people.

“As Muslims, we must make frantic efforts to emulate the virtues of the Holy Prophet, whose life is a perfect example of what we all should be.

“The act of sacrifice, one of the major lessons of the Eid-el-Kabir, should be part of our lives. We must make sacrifices for ourselves, our families, our friends, our neighbours, and of course, our country.

“I enjoin all of us to continue to be good citizens and make meaningful contributions for our continuous peaceful coexistence.”

In his own goodwill message, the immediate Past Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki congratulated Muslims across the world on this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration while also calling on the ummah in Nigeria to continue to demonstrate fear of God which he described as a key ingredient in building a better Nigeria.

Saraki in his Sallah message released in Ilorin and signed by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, also noted that, like last year, this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival is holding with the Covid-19 pandemic still prevalent while the challenge has prevented many Muslims from embarking on the holy pilgrimage.

“The essence of Eid-El-Kabir is the demonstration of the fear of Allah by Prophet Ibrahim (ASW) and his son, Prophet Ismail (ASW). If all of us can imbibe the fear of Allah, then our society will be better. Our country will develop if leaders display fear of Allah in taking key decisions that will affect the interests of the country and lives of the ordinary people.

“Only the fear of God will compel leaders to always take decisions that will engender unity, peace, justice, equity and development in the country. Also, if ordinary people display the fear of God, we will all obey the laws and justifiably insist on the government initiating the right policies at all times.

“Therefore, my muslim brothers and sisters should focus their prayers during this festival period on how Allah can help us to entrench fear of God in our society and in us as individuals, families, governments, corporate bodies and institutions. This is all we need to restore peace, prosperity, development and build a more efficient country that can serve the interest of all and sundry”, Saraki stated.

He further prayed for God’s protection and success for all members of the security agencies on the frontline fighting against insurgents and other criminals. “May Allah heal our land and give us victory over all threats to the territorial integrity of our country. Eid mubarak !”, he added.

  • Insecurity: Saraki tackles Buhari; says 8th Senate organised security summit chaired by Lawan, declared opened by Osinbajo

Insecurity: Saraki tackles Buhari; says 8th Senate organised security summit chaired by Lawan, declared opened by Osinbajo

Immediate past Senate President and chairman of the Eight National Assembly, Bukola Saraki has responded to claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that the 8th Senate did not organize a security summit to tackle the challenges facing the country.

Saraki in a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said there is a deliberate attempt to push out false narratives aimed at “shifting blames and passing the buck arising from the security and other challenges confronting the country on the 8th National Assembly.”

Recall that the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted President Muhammadu Buhari as saying that he tried very hard to get the 8th (National) Assembly to do same (organise a security summit) for the sake of the country “and I didn’t succeed much. But time has proved me right”.
The President was said to have made the claim while receiving the report of the National Security Summit held on May 26, by the 9th House of Representatives from Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

However, faulting the statement, Olaniyonu said the 8th Senate, without any prompting from the Presidency, organised a well-attended two-day security summit on February 8 and 12, 2018.

The statement read: “On a matter as sensitive and important in the scale of constitutional responsibilities of the legislature like security, it will be irresponsible of us not to state the true situation concerning the claim by the Presidency.

“We need to inform the general public that the 8th Senate, without any prompting from the Presidency, organised a well-attended two-day security summit on February 8 and 12, 2018.

“The security summit was organised by the ad hoc committee of the 8th Senate on the Review of the Security Infrastructure headed by incumbent Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan.

“Lawan was then Senate Leader and the summit held at the Nigeria Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja.

“The summit was declared open by the incumbent Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Also, the leadership of the armed forces and other security agencies were all present at the closed-door deliberations.

“After the report of the summit was adopted by the Senate in the chamber, the 20-point recommendation was officially forwarded to the President for consideration and necessary action.

“The Media Office of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki is constrained to make the above clarification for posterity sake because we have noticed the recent trend in which some sources deliberately push out false narratives aimed at shifting blames and passing the buck arising from the security and other challenges confronting the country on the 8th National Assembly.

“We urge discerning members of the public to always take their time to properly check the veracity of the claims contained in such narratives.

“We believe that facts are sacred and opinions are free.

“Therefore, we urge those in charge of representing the views of the President to the public to always check their facts very diligently and ensure that such reports are based on truth and nothing but the truth.”

  • Alleged sale of Kwara assets: Saraki kicks as panel recommends trial of ex-govs

Alleged sale of Kwara assets: Saraki kicks as panel recommends trial of ex-govs

A former Kwara State governor and immediate past President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has dismissed the report of a committee set up by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to investigate sales of Kwara State’s assets, which recommended the prosecution of Saraki and former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, as well as other former government officials.

The committee’s white paper accused the ex-governors and other government officials of economic sabotage against the state through sales of public assets to cronies at give-away prices.

But Saraki has dismissed the panel’s recommendations, saying neither him nor his successor was invited by the panel to give evidence.

Saraki, in a statement from his Media Office, which was signed by Press Officer on Local Matters, Mr. Abdulqadir Abdulganiyu said neither him, who left the office 10 years ago nor Ahmed, the immediate past governor got an invite to appear before any investigative and fact-finding panel set up by the Abdulrazaq’s administration.

“Thus, it is clear that the so-called investigation being conducted is not about finding facts. It is about throwing mud and staining the predecessor of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in office,” he said.

Saraki insisted that him and Ahmed would never be shy of giving account of how they managed the assets of Kwara State.

The statement noted that both men took decisions concerning those assets in a manner that would enhance their value and stimulate economic activities in the state, which was hitherto referred to as a civil service state.

Referring to the issue of Kwara Mall, the statement argued that based on the decision taken by the Saraki administration, the project has become the epicentre of economic activity in Ilorin, the state capital.

“In fact, it’s importance is further underscored by the decision of the government to give the owners of businesses inside the mall a grant totaling about N1 billion to cushion the harsh effect of the ‘End SARS’ protest on their property. It is obvious that the mall today provides direct and indirect employment to hundreds of Kwarans and Dr. Saraki is proud that his administration initiated the idea where Ilorin became the first town outside Lagos to host a Shoprite in its mall.”

On the issue of the Shonga Farms, the statement added that the farms demonstrated the cluelessness of the current governor of Kwara State and his advisers.

“That is why on some occasions, key officials of the administration will hold the Shonga Farms as a glory of Kwara State and on some other occasions, like the case of the press statement under reference, it will seek to paint it in bad light.

“We are surprised that other companies that this government facilitated their investment into Kwara State like Dangote Flour Mills were not being cited as examples of how the previous administrations ‘misapplied’ the resources of the state.”

According to the statement, “this same Shonga Farms is not only a model how we need commercial farming to revolutionise agriculture in Nigeria but it is the second commercialism farm in the country. The farm today has an investment worth over $100 million and has in its service over 1, 000 Kwarans in the state. It is a project that went through the scrutiny of President Olusegun Obasanjo and the CBN.”

Eid-El-Fitri: Saraki greets Muslims, urges continuous prayer for Nigeria

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the successful completion of this year’s Ramadan fasting and the consequent Eid-El-Fitri festival.

Saraki in a statement signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his Special Adviser and head of his Media Office, also advised Nigerians to continue with their closeness to Almighty Allah and their prayers for His intervention in the affairs of the country, even after the obligatory fasting period.

He noted that Ramadan did not just symbolize having a positive attitude during the fasting period but represents a total change towards becoming good citizens who comply with the law and demonstrate patriotism at all times.

“We should refrain from returning to our old habits and become responsible citizens who pray for the country at all times and play our roles in the quest to entrench the fear of God, discipline, unity, development, equity, justice and inclusiveness in the polity.

“The current situation in our country requires sincere change of mindset by all Nigerians. We should use this post-Ramadan period and the lessons we learnt from the fasting period to steer clear of any action which does not bode well for our country. This is a period when we all need to pray to Allah to once again pull the country back from the precipice.

“ With the level of insecurity and economic crisis which have combined to worsen the rate of poverty in Nigeria, all Nigerians must unite and demonstrate patriotism that will help our country overcome the present challenges.

“Once again, I commend our security agencies at the frontline and pray that Almighty God will protect and give them victory over the insurgents and other non-state actors inflicting violence on our country. May Allah heal our land of any form of affliction”, Saraki added.

World Press Freedom Day: Saraki calls for empowerment of journalists, media

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has called for the empowerment of the media and journalists in the country.

Saraki made the call in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day on Monday.

He said journalist must be empowered to tell powerful stories that will aid overall collective development; keep leaders and institutions accountable, foster peace and unity and inspire a sense of patriotic duty amongst the citizenry.

”The media are critical stakeholders in the Nigerian project. During our colonial rule, the press led the fight for our independence. During our military rule, the media led the fight to return to democracy. During our military rule, the media led the fight to return to democracy.

”Now, as we work to build our nation’s democracy, the press has been the foremost instrument for fighting for equity, justice, unity and the development of Nigeria.

”This is why, as we commemorate WorldPressFreedomDay today, I join leaders across the world to acknowledge the power of “Information as a Public Good.”

”As we observe this day, it is my hope that we will continue to strengthen the media, which is the fourth estate of the realm in our democracy.”

Insecurity: Buhari’s government overwhelmed, needs urgent help – Saraki

Immediate past President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to seek help to contain the country’s mounting security challenges.

“This matter has gone beyond what the government can handle alone,” Saraki said, noting that the Nigerian government is “overwhelmed by the situation.”

“The President should know that calling for help in our present situation is not a sign of weakness,” Saraki said.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the former Kwara State governor was reacting to the multiple attacks, killings and kidnaps that happened with 24 hours news cycle between Sunday and Monday. He said it is “one of the saddest days in recent memory.”

On Tuesday, hoodlums attacked a federal high court in court, torching the library and security sections of the court.

On Sunday Boko Haram hoist up its flag in Niger State. The state governor expressed how helpless the government has become, and how thousands of people have been displaced in his state.

Also on Sunday, Boko Haram attacked Mainok, a town on the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway. More than 30 soldiers were killed in the attack, Reuters reported. About nine people were also killed by hoodlums that invaded Ukpomachi Village, Awkuzu in Oyi LGA of Anambra State.

On Monday, two students who were among those kidnapped from Greenfield University, Kaduna State, were killed by their abductors.

An unspecified number of students were also abducted from the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in Benue State.

At Iyana Iba/Alaba Rago and Ojo areas of Lagos state commercial motorcycle riders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) (Okada) also clashed.

Saraki said the president needs to bring together all former Presidents and heads of state, serving and former chief justices, serving and former presiding officers of the National Assembly, serving and former heads of security agencies, traditional rulers with relevant experience, leaders of the private sector, development partners, friends of Nigeria in the international community and all others who can help in finding solutions to the problem at hand.”

“The meeting must hold expeditiously and must be followed by immediate actions,” he added.

“At this point, words and press statements are not enough. We need to see action. I appeal to Mr President to take the bull by the horn.”
