Hajj: Nigerians to get N8.15m fine, imprisonment over Saudi visa violation

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has warned Nigerian intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj exercise that anyone caught performing the holy pilgrimage without a valid Hajj visa will face a fine of SR20,000 (about N8.15 million) and imprisonment.

The warning was issued during a virtual meeting between the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to review preparations for next year’s pilgrimage. The session was presided over by Dr. Rania Adham of the Saudi Ministry of Hajj.

NAHCON, in a statement, said Saudi authorities stressed strict compliance with all deadlines, noting that they would not be shifted.

These include the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in November this year, 4 January 2026 as the last date for camp booking payments and service contract confirmations, and 1 February 2026 for uploading transport and accommodation contracts on the Nusuk Masar portal. The final deadline for visa issuance remains the 1st of Shawwal.

The Saudis lamented repeated delays by Nigeria in past preparations and warned that such lapses could negatively affect the welfare and overall experience of pilgrims.

They also said all Hadaya (sacrificial rites) payments and accommodation bookings must be processed exclusively through the Nusuk Masar platform.

Responding, NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, assured Saudi authorities of the commission’s full cooperation.

He pledged that NAHCON would work closely with partners to ensure compliance with all deadlines and requirements, with the goal of guaranteeing a smooth, well-coordinated 2026 Hajj operation for Nigerian pilgrims.

Nigeria not affected – FG responds to Saudi visa ban

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday clarified that Nigeria is not on the list of countries facing an entry ban into Saudi Arabia from April 13.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar issued the clarification through a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir.

The minister said Saudi authorities have officially confirmed that the viral memo suggesting Nigeria’s inclusion in the ban list is false.

He called the document, which named Nigeria, Egypt, India, Pakistan and others as banned, misleading and inaccurate.

“The Saudi Tourism Centre confirmed no such directive exists. Current official travel guidelines only apply to the Hajj pilgrimage.

“To clarify, the only restriction concerns tourist visa holders during the Hajj period,” Tuggar said.

Holders of tourist visas cannot perform Hajj, enter or remain in Makkah between April 29 and June 11 (01 Thul Quda to 14 Thul Hijjah 1446 AH).

“The Hajj visa remains the only valid entry permit for pilgrims during that time,” the minister stressed.

Tuggar advised the public to ignore the misleading memo and confirm travel details through official sources before making plans.

“Sharing unverified information causes confusion and may affect travel arrangements,” he warned.

“For accurate updates, travellers should consult official Saudi sources, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry, or recognised diplomatic channels,” he added.

  • OWEI LAKEMFA; Saudi Talks and the bloody road to peace in Ukraine

OWEI LAKEMFA; Saudi Talks and the bloody road to peace in Ukraine

    By Owei Lakemfa.

Peace in Ukraine is fragmented in pieces like a broken Chinese enamel in the sun. Ukraine is where Europeans have been engaged in a senseless slaughter for eleven years now.

To Western Europe, peace has assumed an urgency as the deliberate moves of the United States, US in pulling the plugs, has exposed that part of the world as being vulnerable like a typical neo-colony.

As late as February 14, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was still bragging that there will neither be a ceasefire nor negotiations as long as there are Russian troops on Ukrainian soil and President Vladimir Putin remains President of Russia. Last week he adopted the hare-brained Western European leaders insistence that even if there is to be a ceasefire, it must cover only the air and sea, not the battle fields on the ground.

However, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Zelensky agreed to a ceasefire on all fronts for at least a month if Russia agrees. In a joint statement with the US in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine: “expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation.”

A ceasefire to which from all indications, Russia will accede, is the easiest step to mending peace in Ukraine. The peace in that country was broken on February 22, 2014 when the extreme right overthrew elected President Viktor Yanukovych. This second coup in four years against democratic elections was baptised “Revolution of Dignity” The first was called the “Orange Revolution” Both coups which stopped the same President Yanukovych, were staged when pro-Western elements in Ukraine, realised that they could not win democratic elections against pro-Russian Ukrainians.

After the second coup, the Crimea Peninsula held a referendum in 2014 to opt out of Ukraine and join Russia. The pro-Russia regions of Donetsk and Luhansk which have been winning the democratic elections, decided that either the constitutional order be restored or they would opt out of Ukraine. The Ukrainian armed forces was unleashed on them. Also, to carry out the ethnic cleansing of the pro-Russian Ukrainians, a special neo-Nazi army called the Azov Battalion, was created in May, 2014.

This is the origin of the Ukrainian Civil War which rages until today. Also, irregular Russian forces had crossed the border to fight on the side of the rebels.

In September, 2014 both Ukraine and the separatists signed a 12-Point Peace Agreement in Minsk which provided for a ceasefire, prisoners exchange, deliveries of humanitarian aid, withdrawal of heavy weapons and agreement on co-exististence. But the agreement broke down and the civil war continued.

To stop the conflict, Germany and France brokered a second peace agreement called MINSK II. This 13-point agreement, signed by Ukraine, Russia, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe , OSCE and the leaders of Donetsk and Luhansk provided for immediate, comprehensive ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, OSCE monitoring and dialogue on interim self-government for Donetsk and Luhansk, in accordance with Ukrainian law, and acknowledgement of special status by parliament.

The other points in the agreement were pardon and amnesty for fighters, exchange of hostages and prisoners. humanitarian assistance, resumption of socioeconomic ties, including pensions, Ukrainian restoration of control over state border, and withdrawal of foreign armed formations, military equipment, mercenaries. It also provided for constitutional reform including decentralisation, with specific mention of Donetsk and Luhansk, elections in both regions and, the intensification of the Trilateral Contact Group’s work which included representatives of Russia, Ukraine and OSCE.

However, the Kyiv government refused to implement the agreement, preferring to press with its advantage of a regular military and heavy weapons being supplied by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO.

Given the massacres in the separatist regions, Russia cried out repeatedly to Western European leaders especially Germany and France that had played pivotal roles in the making of MINSK II. Both countries reacted positively. The then German Chancellor Angela Merkel cried herself hoarse asking the Ukrainian authorities implement the peace agreement, but was ignored.

Russia kicked over the years against the massacres in Ukraine to which most of the world appeared indifferent. When it threatened to intervene in the civil war, Macron flew to Moscow to talk with Putin and tried to give assurances.

On February 23, 2022, seven years after MINSK II, Putin announced Russia’s recognition of the rebel regions of Ukraine and its decision to intervene.

He told the world: “ one cannot look at what is happening there without compassion. It was simply impossible to endure all this. It was necessary to stop this nightmare immediately – the genocide against the millions of people living there, who rely only on Russia, hope only on us. It was these aspirations, feelings, pain of people that were for us the main motive for deciding to recognise the people’s republics of Donbas.”

Putin also announced ‘a special military operation’ in Ukraine. He said: “Its goal is to protect people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years. And for this we will strive for the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine, as well as bringing to justice those who committed numerous, bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation.”

The Next day, February 24, 2022, the Russo-Ukrainian War commenced. On February 28, 2025, President Donald Trump met Zelensky in the White House with the former asserting that the Zelensky insistence against a ceasefire and peace agreement with Russia was unacceptable to the US.

This week’s acceptance of a ceasefire with Russia opens the road to peace in Ukraine. But the more difficult issues are actual negotiations and a possible agreement.

Since the conflict began, Russia has seized a fifth of Ukraine. So a major challenge is what happens to those areas or, would the Ukrainian borders be redrawn? What happens to the separatist areas of Ukraine? Would their peoples be allowed full or limited autonomy?

One of the objections of Russia is its virtually being hedged in from various sides by an ever expanding NATO. So, will Ukraine agree not to join it?

A positive in the expected negotiations, is that they can build on the foundations of the MINSK II Agreements.

Whatever happens, once a ceasefire is agreed and it holds, the avoidable slaughters in Ukraine will cease and some ten million Ukrainians would be free to return to their homes and start rebuilding their lives. Also, the possibility of a nuclear war, would greatly diminish.

The road to peace in Ukraine, even if it be bloody and paved with broken bones under an asphalt of shattered dreams, is worth taking

  • Vinicius in direct talks with Saudi officials over €1bn contract

Vinicius in direct talks with Saudi officials over €1bn contract

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has been in talks with the Saudi Pro League since 2023, it has been revealed.

Radio Marca says in the first meeting, held in 2023, Vinicius was in attendance. He personally sat down with Saudi Arabia officials to listen to the project they were offering in a relaxed chat, lasting approximately fifteen minutes, in which he showed interest in the proposals, not only economic, but also sporting and personal.

At that first meeting, powerbrokers from the striker’s entourage, intermediaries and officials from the Royal House of Saudi Arabia met via video conference. The objective was to persuade ‘Vini’ with a promising future that is not based only on millions. In addition to beneficial commercial agreements, the Arabs tempted him with the idea of being an ‘ambassador’ for the World Cup that will take place in 2034.

The financial amounts were agreed upon in a second meeting with a more formal character and in a safe place: Prague. In the Czech capital, away from the media spotlight and in neutral territory, Vinicius’ agents met personally with the vice president of the Saudi Pro League, Saad Al Lazeez.

The exorbitant amounts put on the table amount to 1 billion euros for Vinicius for five seasons, meaning his salary would reach 200 million per season. The destination club is still not decided. Saudi Arabia is betting on him playing in Jeddah, although Neymar’s departure from Al Hilal could change his course if the transfer is finally carried out.

The player’s close entourage is very clear that this is an unprecedented and irresistible offer – and they made this clear to Vinicius Jr when they saw that the Arabs were serious. The dizzying figures and the projects offered have caused the player to consider his future.

More than a year and a half after learning of the billion-dollar offer for the first time, the links between Saudi Arabia and the player remain very clear. So much so that just three weeks ago his agent travelled to the Arab country for further talks.

That meeting came amid fresh reports of Vinicius Jr rejecting a new contract from Real Madrid. His currentl deal runs to 2027.

Nigerian players should consider playing in Saudi over Europe – Amunike

Nigeria assistant head coach Emmanuel Amunike has advised Nigerian players to consider the Saudi league over European clubs.

The Saudi league has already become a thorn in Europe’s top divisions as clubs like Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ittihad managed to convince some of the world’s best players to leave for astronomical money last summer.

And Amunike doesn’t agree with all the criticism and scrutiny towards the Saudi Pro League in Europe.

Speaking about the growth of the Saudi league, former Barcelona attacker Amunike told Tribal Football: “Saudi football has changed a lot and I think the Saudi people deserve to be respected and they have the right to change the narrative of football over there.

“I disagree with the idea that Saudi’s can come to Europe and buy European clubs, but they can’t invest in their country to change the narrative of their football.”

Nobody has benefited more from Saudi’s money than Newcastle United who were brought by Saudi’s sovereign wealth fund the PIF in 2021. There is a point to be made that the Premier League sanctioned that takeover so they can’t complain about Saudi clubs coming in for their stars to help grow their own league.

Amunike continues to emphasise his support for the Saudi league by admitting that he wouldn’t discourage players in Nigeria considering playing in Saudi over Europe.

He said: “If a player comes to me to ask me about going there {Saudi Arabia} I would say to them ‘why not if it is the right project for you’”.

There is every chance Saudi’s unlimited wealth will come knocking on Europe’s door again this January transfer window, but it is also possible that before long they will start looking to convince talents from around the world to join their ever growing league.

“Some things we try to change and some things we try to adapt to stay the same but in general I am enjoying it, yes.”

  • Investigation launched into Saudi visa cancellation – FG

Investigation launched into Saudi visa cancellation – FG

The Federal Government on Tuesday urged all affected passengers of  Air Peace whose visas were cancelled and deported from Saudi Arabia to remain calm and that an investigation into the “unfortunate” incident has been launched.

This is contained in a statement by Francisca  Omayuli, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Omayuli, reports received from the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah indicated that Air Peace Flight No. P4-752 transported 264 passengers from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos and the Aminu Kano International Airport and landed at the King Abdul-Aziz International Airport – Hajj Terminal Jeddah on Nov. 13.

She said in the statement that on arrival at the Hajj Terminal,  the Saudi immigration authorities informed the passengers that their visas had been cancelled and 177 passengers had to be evacuated on the same flight back to Nigeria.

No fewer than 87 of the passengers were cleared by immigration and allowed entry into Jeddah, she added.

Omayuli explained that the Saudi authorities are yet to give reasons for the cancellation of the visas and the outright ban imposed on 18 of the passengers from Saudi Arabia for various offences they committed in the past.

“Notwithstanding the fact that it is the prerogative of a sovereign nation to determine who is permitted entry into its territory, Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are traditional and strategic partners, who are willing to guard against recurrence of this unfortunate incident.

“In this regard, investigation is ongoing in both Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

“The affected passengers are, therefore, implored to keep calm, while the matter is being resolved,” the statement quoted Omayuli as saying.

The House of Representatives had condemned the cancellation of the passengers’ visas, describing the act as embarrassing.

They urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, take the necessary diplomatic steps to protect Nigeria’s image and ensure the full implementation of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).

The lawmakers also called for the protection of Nigerian national carriers flying to Saudi Arabia and protect the Nigerian travelling public.

They also mandated the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and that of Interior and Pilgrims Affairs to launch an enquiry into the immediate and remote circumstances surrounding the cancellation of the visas and report back within two weeks.
