Qatar 2022: Argentina defeat Poland 2-0 to progress to round of 16

Argentina booked a passage  to the round of 16 following their 2-0 over European nation Poland.

Argentina began their campaign with a shock 2-1 defeat by the Saudis, before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory over Mexico – with captain Lionel Messi scoring once in each fixture – to put them on three points.

The encounter seemed like it would end in a draw  after first half ended goalless.

However, upon resumption, Brighton midfielder, Molina got to the byline and cut the ball back where Mac Allister was waiting – the 23-year-old didn’t make a clean connection as he swept it with his right foot, but the direction was perfect and just kissed the far post after passing Szczesny.

Again, in the 67th minute, Enzo Fernandez drives at the defence and finds Alvaraz, who takes a touch, swivels and blasts a rocket into the top corner form a cool finish for the Argentina’s second goal.

Argentina go through as Group C winners, while Poland sneak through in second place due to having a better goal difference than Mexico.

They are through and will face Australia in the round of  16.

Meanwhile, in the other group game, Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia by 2-1 but failed to secure qualification based on goal difference.

The Mexicans needed a two goal difference to progress to the next round but could only secure a 2-1 win.

NDLEA nabs wanted Lagos drug kingpin, Gbolahan

A wanted notorious drug kingpin, Wasiu Sanni Gbolahan, popularly known as Teacher, who recruits moles for the cartel, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the weekend.

His arrest was sequel to the arrest of a 56-year-old trafficker, Lawal Lateef Oyenuga, who was on a mission to deliver 400grams of drug concealed in a pair of palm sandals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

NDLEA operatives attached to the screening point of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos had on Thursday 24th November intercepted Oyenuga with a pair of black palm sandals packed in the luggage he was going with to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airways flight.

A thorough examination of the sandals revealed they were used to conceal two parcels of cocaine weighing 400 grams. This is barely a week after a 56-year-old widow and mother of four, Mrs. Ajisegiri Kehinde Sidika was arrested at the airport over her attempt to traffic 400 grams of cocaine concealed in her footwear to Makkah, Saudi Arabia on board a Qatar Airways flight.

In his statement, Oyenuga claimed he was recruited to traffic the drug by Wasiu Sanni Gbolahan popularly known as Teacher, adding that he was first given some pellets of cocaine to swallow but when he couldn’t do that, then he was given the ones concealed in the palm sandals.

He said he resorted to the criminal trade to raise money to pay an examination fee for his daughter who is in Senior Secondary School class 3.

The Agency’s database revealed that Wasiu Sanni Gbolahan (Teacher) is a major drug kingpin and had been linked to some previous attempts to traffic cocaine to Saudi Arabia and Dubai, UAE. He was earlier named as the one who recruited a BRT driver, Bolajoko Muyiwa Babalola for Lagos socialite and owner of Adekaz Hotels, Alhaji Ademola Afolabi Kazeem (a.k.a Alhaji Abdallah Kazeem Muhammed) to traffic drugs to Dubai. Bolajoko was arrested on 27th June while taking 900 grams of cocaine to Dubai while Ademola Kazeem was nabbed on Thursday 10th November, barely 10 days after he was declared wanted by NDLEA.

A follow up operation in the early hours of Friday 25th November led to the arrest of the kingpin, Teacher, who specialises in recruiting mules for drug barons in Lagos and its environs at his residence located in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 64-year-old Gbolahan is a housing and property agent, with seven children and four wives, one of whom is now late.

  • Qatar 2022: How we managed to defeat Mexico – Messi opens up

Qatar 2022: How we managed to defeat Mexico – Messi opens up

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi has revealed that they were faced with early elimination as favourite at the mundial and that put a lot of pressure on them against Mexico.

He added that his team lived with discomfort following their World Cup 2-1 loss against Saudi Arabia in their first game of the tournament, adding that they didn’t expect to lose the game.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Messi and Enzo Fernandez gave Argentina the victory over Mexico by scoring one goal a piece in the must win encounter..

In the post-match press conference, the dimunitive forward said Argentina lived a discomfort live after the defeat to Saudi Arabia

“We lived with discomfort given the defeat in the opening match was something we did not expect.

“The days felt very long, and we were eager to have the chance to turn it around.

“Luckily, we had the option to win, and it was a weight off our shoulders, a reason for joy and peace of mind because it’s all down to us again.”

He continued: “I tell people the same thing that they continue to believe. Today we did what we had to do, we had no other choice.”

  • Qatar 2022: We’re dead right now – Messi reacts after Saudi defeat

Qatar 2022: We’re dead right now – Messi reacts after Saudi defeat

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has reacted 2-1 humiliation by Saudi Arabia in the World Cup fixture in Qatar.

The first half was marked by a series of Argentina goals ruled out for offside. The calls were the correct ones by the refereeing and VAR teams, but they appeared to affect Argentina nonetheless.

“We had those disallowed goals, at that time we thought we would have a lot of chances and we made the mistake of speeding up and going route one, instead of moving the ball from side to side,” said PSG attacker Messi.

“We knew that they would play a high line and we got caught up in that a bit.

“Then we went 2-1 down and we became disorganised, playing desperately.”

An honest assessment, but one that should be worrying for Argentina and showed their inability to navigate difficult situations in what should have been, overall, a relatively simple game for them. There will be bigger tests to come and they will have to improve quickly if they are to live up to their tag as contenders.

Barcelona legend Messi also conceded that scoring so early may have not been the best thing for them. He also confessed that the squad took the result hard, but insists they remain united and ready to bounce back.

“The goal so early wasn’t good for us, it confused us. We knew that in the first game it could happen that we didn’t play as well as we can and we have been,” commented Messi.

“When the scoreline goes against you, it becomes even more difficult. The group is dead right now, because it’s a tough blow to take, because we were confident of getting off to a good start, of winning, and that calms you.

“But this group stands out for its unity, its strength and now is the time to be more united than ever and know we can go back to the start, to our way of playing to try to win.”

Despite the setback, Messi wanted to end on a positive, looking ahead to the coming games. Next up for the Albiceleste is Mexico on Saturday.

“Calmness [is my message for the fans]. We know it’s a tough blow, one that hurts,” said Messi.

“But we have to keep believing and we need the people to keep believing that this group won’t let them down.

“We’re going to go and try to win against Mexico.”

The disallowed goals undoubtedly affected Argentina, but Messi doesn’t want to make excuses. VAR got the calls right, even though many pointed to how tight they were.

“I saw some photos, they were very tight,” said Messi.

“I couldn’t tell from the images, but if they ruled them out then it’s because they were no doubt offside.

    “There’s no excuse.”
