    BREAKING: Veteran Saxophonist, Orlando Julius dies at 79

    Popular Nigerian Saxophonist, Orlando Julius has died at the age of 79.

    His wife, Latoya Ekemode, confirmed his death to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

    She said that Orlando Julius passed out in his sleep on Thursday night.

    “Yes, my husband passed on late last night, there was no indication that death was coming, he was not ill, he only slept and died in his sleep,” she said.

    Newsmen reports that Orlando Julius, was a Nigerian saxophonist, singer, band leader, and songwriter closely associated with afrobeat music.

    Some of his musical albums were: Disco Hi-Life, Ololufe, Love, Peace and Happiness; Dance Afrobeat and more.

    Meet Ewaoluwa Okanlawon, Nigeria’s 10-year old saxophone prodigy

    It is not every time you find a young girl who has an amazing mastery of the saxophone. Ewaoluwa Okanlawon is a 10 year old saxophonist who is making waves with her God given talent. She has performed at events like ‘Amuwo Games’ and other amazing events.

     

    Asked how she developed love for the saxophone, the petite instrumentalist said:”I developed passion for the saxophone when I saw my best friend in Primary school playing it. That was how I became interested in it”, She told TheNewsGuru.

     

    Sharing how she combines her education with her passion for music, Ewaoluwa said: ”Even though I play the saxophone a lot and attend a lot of events, my education is still the most important thing to me right now. I focus on my studies during the week, while I rehearse from Friday evenings to Sunday”.

    On when she started playing the saxophone, the talented instrumentalist said: “I was introduced to the saxophone at the age of eight. However, I really started playing at the age of nine. I am happy playing the instrument. It makes me fulfilled”.

     

    Ewaoluwa noted that her parents’ support has kept her grounded.

     

    “My parents have made it easy for me. They have gotten me amazing music teachers who have impacted me with a lot of knowledge on musical instruments. They make sure I am fully prepared for all my performances. They have been very supportive”.

     

    The young musician noted that refusing to dwell on negative thoughts has helped her overcome stage fright, adding that she intends to perform on the global stage with great christian musicians.

    “I overcome stage fright by not having negative thoughts on my mind. Thoughts like ‘What if I make mistakes?’ Are people going to applaud me or make fun of me’? Above all, l I pray to God and he has always been my guardian. My dream is to perform with great Christian musicians on the world stage”.

    What you missed at Beejay Sax Live

    Some memories are just impossible to erase. The Beejay Sax Live concert held on the 14th of May 2017, at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, was one of them. The concert started at about 5.30pm with various budding gospel artistes thrilling the audience. Thereafter, ace comedian Gbenga Adeyinka mounted the stage to officially kick off the event. He started out with rib cracking jokes and then introduced the artistes one after the other.

     

    Artistes like Femi Okunnuga, Jaiye Aboderin and TosinBee gave a good account of themselves by thrilling the audience to their magical performances. The crowning moment of that session was when the slender gospel artiste, TosinBee switched to Fuji music. This got the audience excited.

    Humour merchants such as First Born, Grand Komanda, KennyBlaq, Saco, Damola and others spiced the event with their well delivered jokes .

    Bolaji Banjoko a.k.a Beejay Sax is one of the country’s leading saxophonists. He is known for his harmonious saxophone notes, blending with African songs. The high point of the event was when he mounted the stage. His presentation showed that he knows the mood of his fans and perfectly in tune with how to satisfy it. Emotions ran high as he serenaded the audience by playing popular gospel tunes. They cheered and sang along with him.

    Female singers like Palmira and Psalmos are amazing performers with voices so hard to ignore. They took turns to perform their songs exciting the audience with their vocal prowess. Just when we thought the concert cum album launch was over, Laolu Gbenjo, Tim Godfrey, Nosa and Tosin Alao mounted the stage. They gave an impressive performance , moving from one song effortlessly to another.

    All in all, BeeJay Sax raised the bar not only because of the massive turnout , but also by daring to be different.
