PTDF shortlists 606 candidates in Bauchi to study abroad

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has shortlisted 606 candidates from Bauchi State for their PhD and MSc studies abroad.

According to him, the shortlisted candidates are solely those for oil and gas or renewable energy related programmes.

Speaking on the criteria used in selecting the candidates, he said they looked at their O’level certificates and first degrees, adding that they also looked at the second degrees of the candidates going for PhD.

Fari explained that PTDF also looked at how competent the candidates were in defending their proposals, hence the resolve to invite panelists.

“The process is okay because there is transparency in all what we are doing from the applications because we advertise and give the applicants six weeks to apply.

“The computer shortlisted the candidates and then our staff shortlisted what the computer had shortlisted because we know that some people can beat the computer.

“Here in Bauchi, we have 606 shortlisted candidates and today, we are going to interview 204 which consist of 102 PhD and 102 MSc.

“The mandate of PTDF is to develop capacity, competency, skills in the oil and gas industry and we can not go beyond our mandate.

“PTDF candidates that normally study abroad are outshining. Our candidates are performing excellently because of the selection process which is transparent and based on merit,” he said.

Also, one of the panelists, Dr Usman Hassan, Head of Department, Petroleum Engineering, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, said most of the proposals of the applicants interviewed so far were relevant to the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

“If the scholars become successful at the end of the programme, they are going to add value and make contributions to the national oil and gas industry,” he said.

One of the candidates, Ijantiku John, said he applied for the PTDF to pursue his Masters Degree in Environmental Science in Germany and lauded the screening process.

“The questions they asked are based on your field that you aspire to study and everything is very transparent and no manipulations whatsoever,” he said.

PTDF screens candidates for 2024/2025 overseas scholarship

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has commenced the final stage of the selection process for the award of the 2024 overseas scholarship to qualified Nigerians.

The Head of Overseas Scholarship Scheme, Mrs Bolanle Agboola, told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that only qualified candidates would be awarded.

The PTDF on February 5 put out an advert inviting qualified Nigerians to apply for the 2024/2025 Postgraduate Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS).

The physical Interview exercise for shortlisted candidates in the two categories (MSc/PhD) is scheduled to be held between May 20 and 24 in six designated centres across the country’s six geo-political zones.

According to Agboola, the exercise is not just held in Abuja. We have a centre for the South-South at the University of Port Harcourt; and for South-West, the University of Ibadan.

Agboola said, ”For the South-East, we have University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus; for North-West we have College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna; and for the North-East we have ATBU, Bauchi.

”The exercise is running concurrently in all the six geo-political zones of the county and our target is to select the best candidates for the scholarship.”

She disclosed that more than 20,000 applications were received, out of which over 5,000 were shortlisted across the zones.

Agboola  explained that PTDF was an agency of the Federal Government charged with the responsibility of building capacity and capability for the oil and gas industry.

”The purpose of this is for the indigenisation of the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

”Our target is to give the necessary skills and provide the opportunity for Nigerians to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence required for the oil and gas industry.

”Note that every state of the nation will get an equal number of candidates based on our budget for the year,” she said.

On the reason for the overseas training, Agboola explained that it was due to the non-availability of most of the high level equipment needed for the training in the country.

”So, we train people abroad, so they can have hands-on experience of all the equipment and technology needed for the industry which is not readily available in the country.

”Aside from the overseas scholarship we also have the in-country scholarship where Nigerians are trained within Nigeria.

”We have upgraded the facilities of some universities in the country to some level and we partner with these universities to run the scholarship,’’ she added.

Speaking on the ”Japa syndrome”,Agboola said that the PTDF had some measures in place to ensure that the candidates returned back to the country upon completion of their training.

She added,”What we do is that the applicants sign bonds with us before going abroad. Also some of these countries we send them to do not allow them to stay back.

”Once you have sponsorship from a government agency, if you want to get a stay visa, they will ask you to go back to your sponsor for a letter of no objection.

”So these are some of the measures that are in place and I can tell you that lots of them come back.’’

Agboola said the PTDF was partnering with four countries which the candidates would be sent to for training, adding that they included the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, one of the shortlisted candidates, Amira Bello from Niger, expressed delight at the seamless nature and smoothness of the exercise.

Bello, who expressed optimism that she would be awarded to further her studies in Project Management, urged other Nigerians to key into the process to benefit from the scheme.

”I have been hearing about the PTDF scholarship and did not know that it was possible until now. The whole process has been fair and smooth.

”I encourage Nigerians out there to apply for this scholarship, as they stand the chance to qualify as the process is based on merit,’ she said.

  • CBN monetary policies: TETfund considering suspension of foreign scholarships

CBN monetary policies: TETfund considering suspension of foreign scholarships

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has said that the recent Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy had created difficulties in the payment of foreign scholarship tuition fees and stipends.

The Executive Secretary, TETFund, Mr  Sonny Echono, made this known at a One-Day Stakeholders’ Engagement on Emerging Issues with the TETFund Intervention in Abuja on Wednesday.

Echono said since the funds allocation was barely enough to service programmes under its Tertiary Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS), the fund was considering suspending foreign scholarships while also considering an upward review of local scholarships.

”The fund at this material time is also discouraging beneficiary institutions from initiating new Benchwork programmes.

”Additionally, there are issues related to scholars not returning to serve their bonds at their home institutions upon completion of their programmes.

”Infact the challenge of scholars absconding has undermine and complicated the TSAS programme and bringing it under intense scrutiny.

”It is for these and other reasons that this engagement was organised. We need to address these challenges and find solutions to ensure the effective and smooth implementation of our scholarship programmes,” he said.

The executive secretary noted that the fund recently signed several MoU’s with some prestigious institutions overseas that include universities in Malaysia, India, Brazil, France and the United States with a view to boosting and enhancing the TSAS programme in the future.

Also speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki called on the need to develop new strategies for funding while ensuring sensitivity of the evolving challenging dynamics through qualitative funding.

Maiyaki advised the fund to revamp its monitoring mechanism for quality assurance so as to have a better return on investment on its projects.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the  House Committee on TETFund, Mrs Miriam Onuoha said in making essential infrastructure available in tertiary institutions, there was need to ensure inclusivity especially with Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWD).

“In our physical planning, we must make accessible the building to be accommodating to the needs of PLWD,” she said.

In the same vein, the former Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola, called for a monitoring and implementation system to ensure that academic calendars of universities were adhered to.

Okebukola who spoke on TSAS, emerging issues and possible solutions, clamour for reduced TETFund oversees scholarships while encouraging in-country training in TETFund strengthened PG programmes.

He said that rather than continuously spending a lot of funds on foreign training, local universities should be provided with state-of-the-art facilities while carrying out accreditation of postgraduate programmes.

”In offering solutions to these challenges, there is need to offer TETFund support to top-rate lecturers from oversees universities to come to Nigeria to join local PG training by Nigerian professors.

”We must send professors (of at least 10 years standing) for capacity building to top-rate overseas universities in carefully selected programmes on return to bolster doctoral education and supervision,”he said.

  • UTME result: Innoson withdraws N3 million scholarship awarded to Mmesoma

UTME result: Innoson withdraws N3 million scholarship awarded to Mmesoma

The management of Innoson Automobile Company, has withdrawn the N3 million scholarship awarded to Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme over her involvement in Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) result manipulation.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Cornel Osigwe, Head of Corporate Communications at Innoson Group, and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Onitsha.

According to him, in recent days, we have been involved in the process of investigating allegations surrounding the 2023 UTME examination results of one of our scholarship recipients, Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme.

“It was reported initially that Miss Joy scored exceptionally high on the exam, a feat that led to her being awarded a scholarship by our company.

“However, subsequent reports of discrepancies in her UTME score led us to seek clarification from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and to allow her to voice her stance, we engaged in direct dialogue with Miss Joy.

“Further to this, a committee set up by Gov. Charles Soludo, carried out a thorough independent investigation into this matter,” he said.

Osigwe noted that the findings from the rigorous investigation have now confirmed that Miss Mmesoma did manipulate her UTME results.

“This conclusion is deeply disappointing and stands in direct contravention of the values we hold dear at Innoson Vehicles, particularly those that underscore our scholarship program.

“In line with these principles and response to the confirmed findings, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw the scholarship awarded to Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme.

“This action is a testament to our unyielding commitment to honesty, integrity, and merit-based recognition,” he said.

He acknowledged that the development was regrettable, and it has undoubtedly caused dismay among those who stood by Miss Mmesoma.

He assured that Innoson Vehicles remained steadfast in its mission to support deserving students, invest in the future of the education sector, and upheld the highest ethical standards.
