556 outstanding LASU students get scholarship

The management of Lagos State University has awarded scholarship of 50 per cent refund of school fees in the academic session to 556 outstanding undergraduate students of the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that this is in line with a promise made by Prof. ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, when she assumed duty on Sept. 20, 2021, as the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of LASU.

She promised 50 per cent refund of school fees to students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 every academic session.

Olatunji-Bello had said that the decision to introduce the policy was to promote healthy competition among the students.

The VC announced the scholarship awards to 556 beneficiaries at a public lecture on the first anniversary of her assumption of office on Tuesday, in Lagos.

She said that the administration’s vision remained making LASU  the best university in West Africa.

Olatunji-Bello said that within a year, the administration, with support of all stakeholders in LASU, had added three new faculties of science and a school.

“The new faculties are Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Environmental Sciences; and School of Library, Archival and Information Science.

“Other achievements include admission of new international students, expansion of programmes, and the Epe Campus,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello said that to achieve its vision, the administration set out six strategic goals.

These, she said, include: to ensure that academic and professional programmes are and remain accredited by the relevant bodies.

Another is to “make the university a research, innovation, and development hub for Lagos State and national development”.

It also aims to “ensure that infrastructural facilities are improved and readily available for seamless performance of administrative and academic duties.”

Others are, “to improve internal generation of revenue with the aim of achieving financial sustainability of the university, promote the welfare of all staff and students in the university and promote participation in sports and recreational activities.”

Olatunji-Bello reaffirmed that the university’s commitment to providing a platform that engenders intellectual debates and proffers workable solutions to the deplorable state of education in Nigeria.

“We are bearing in mind the unique place of higher education in the development of our nation.

“Indeed, given the dire state of higher education in the country today, no other discussion would have been more pressing.

“In the last seven months, most public Universities have been shut following the stalemate in the negotiations between the federal government and the leadership of ASUU,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello said that the modest achievements so far demonstrate the administration’s unwavering commitment to the vision that drives its policies and the development of the University.

“Also, the cardinal point of this administration’s mission is to place the university on a solid foundation of excellence in research, learning, and community service,” she said.

The VC appreciated  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who is the Visitor to the University, and his Special Adviser on Education, Mr  Tokunbo Philip Wahab, for their support.

She also thanked the Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Gbolahan Elias, and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of our Governing Council, Mr David Sunmoni, as well.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for scholarships for talented African youths who are disadvantaged by low incomes.

Jonathan made the call in his remarks during the 11th graduation ceremony of the Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), Kampala.

Jonathan, who is the Chancellor of the University, in his remarks made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, assured the University of his continued support.

“We will continue to focus on removing barriers to access of higher education for many African youths who are talented but disadvantaged by low incomes.

“We will therefore need to look for scholarships for the talented but poor youths, even if it means connecting them to loan schemes where they can pay later,” Jonathan said.

The former Nigeria president also advocated for collaboration between academia and industry within African continent to address some of the challenges facing the region.

“We need to engage industry across the region and the continent with a view to creating meaningful and productive academia-industry partnerships.

“This will work better if the academia supports industry with action research to strengthen production, distribution and marketing while industry supports the university.

Jonathan commended the CUU leadership’s efforts to surpass the school pre-pandemic performance at a time when other universities were still struggling to recover from the effects of COVID-19.

He also commended CUU’s collaboration with other universities and institutions, saying “I know this leads to exchange of ideas and creation of opportunities for students and faculty in the collaborating institutions.

“Progressive institutions know that collaboration is better than competition; and that there is a lot we can do together to take our universities to greater heights.”

Jonathan who congratulated the 2022 class granduands and their parents, also advised the students to embrace success.

“To succeed, you must be intentional in embracing success, anchor habits such as time management, planning and executing your plans, continuous learning and reflection

He urged them to be Committed to excellence, taking personal care to avoid causes of preventable diseases or death and networking with other resourceful persons.

“It is important you develop big goals and a determination to realise them.

“Understand that what differentiates the powerful from the powerless in the 21st Century is mindset.

“The powerful have understood that they can create a lifestyle they desire.

“They are driven from within; they apply relevant wisdom to fill gaps and solve challenges of society. They are able to do all these because they utilise the power of their mind.

“Today’s accomplishment is already a sign that you can achieve more if you continue to work hard. You have no excuse to fail.

“I charge you to go out and change the world beginning with your person, families and communities,” he added.

DISTINCTION: 17-year-old Nigerian, Victory Yinka-Banjo gets 19 scholarship offers from US, Canada

A 17-year-old Nigerian, who scored straight As in WASSCE, has received 19 full-ride scholarship offers from universities across the United States and Canada.

Victory Yinka-Banjo, who is a secondary school graduate, was offered more than $5 million dollars’ worth of scholarship money for an undergraduate program of study, according to admission documents and estimates of financial aid awards.

“It still feels pretty unbelievable. I applied to so many schools because I didn’t even think any school would accept me,” Victory told CNN.

Born to Nigerian parents, mother Chika Yinka-Banjo, a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos, and Father Adeyinka Banjo, a private sector procurement and supply chain executive, Victory was given potential full scholarships from the Ivy League schools, Yale College, Princeton University, Harvard College, and Brown University.

Other US scholarship offers included those from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia.

In Canada, Victory was offered the Lester B. Pearson scholarship from the University of Toronto and the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow (KMILOT) scholarship from the University of British Columbia.

Victory, who was a senior prefect in secondary school, added: “Their admissions processes are extremely selective. They only accept the best of the best. So, you can imagine how, on a daily basis, I have to remind myself that I actually got into these schools. It is surreal!”

Victory rose to national prominence in late 2020 after she scored straight As in her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Months earlier, the Nigerian teen had been rated as the “Top in the World” in English as a second language (speaking endorsement) by the University of Cambridge International Examination (CIE). Victory aced the Cambridge IGCSE exam — acquiring A in all six subjects she sat for.

Victory told CNN her remarkable achievements are borne out of hard work.

“They have made me truly feel proud about the hard work I have put into several areas of my life over the years. I am slowly beginning to realize that I deserve them,” she said.

The teenager remarked that her multiple scholarship offers “have made me stand taller, smile wider, and pat myself on the back more often.”

Victory said she hopes to study Computational Biology. However, she is still weighing up her options on which school to choose, having been wooed by many prestigious institutions.

“I am still doing research on some schools that are at the top of my list, like Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and just trying to compare and contrast all of them thoroughly,” she told CNN.

  • Sanwo-Olu awards scholarship to children of slain policemen

Sanwo-Olu awards scholarship to children of slain policemen

Police officers lynched in the wake of the violence instigated by the nationwide youth demonstration against police brutality will not die in vain, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged.

The state government, yesterday, directed Lagos State Scholarship Board to award scholarships to the children of the slain officers up to the university level.

Twenty-nine Divisional Police Stations and 17 Police Posts were razed by hoodlums disguised as protesters.

Also, six police officers were lynched, 36 critically injured, while 71 police operational vehicles were torched.

In spite of the loss, the police said they remained undeterred in performing their constitutional duties.

Sanwo-Olu yesterday, made the offer to take the bill of replacing the logistics lost by the police when he visited the Command Headquarters in Ikeja to boost the morale of officers, following the demoralising events of the past week in which police officers and their stations were targeted by hoodlums.

The governor got the assurance of the police’s commitment to strengthen security across the state from the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu.

Sanwo-Olu said the statutory duties of the Police could not be wished away because of the actions of a few bad eggs, noting that the impact of the police officers’ absence on the roads was generally felt by residents.

He said the State must put the event of the past week behind it and move on to restore peace across the communities.

To achieve this, police officers , he said, must regain their confidence.

He said: “Commissioner of Police has come forward with a number of requests, which we will need to address to boost the morale of officers after last week’s event. As your governor, I have come here to take full responsibility for the loss you have suffered in terms of logistics. From tomorrow (Thursday), we will start implementing these requests.

“Through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), we will be replacing the police operational vehicles burnt in the violence. We have a bigger plan for all the police stations burnt down. We will look for the funds and build befitting stations that will set the standard of what police stations should be.

“The most important request is to offer scholarship to the children of officers that died. I have directed the Lagos State Scholarship Board under the Special Adviser on Education to immediately award scholarship to the children of the slain officers.”

Sanwo-Olu said the state Government would also be compensating family members of the officers killed in the violence and take care of the burial arrangement of the slain officers, adding that the state would also be picking up the hospital bills of those injured in the mayhem.
Police officers serving in Lagos are also to get life insurance from the state government, Sanwo-Olu promised.

The governor directed the Executive Secretary of LSSTF, Dr. Rasaq Balogun, to establish the modality with the police leadership in the state.

The governor also approved the request to upgrade Police Cottage Hospital in Ikeja, directing the Commissioner for Health to inspect the facility for the required upgrade.

In addition to donating two 150KVa generating sets to the police, Sanwo-Olu said the Command Headquarters would be connected to the State’s Independent Power Project (IPP) for constant power supply.

Responding, Odumosu said the manner with which the slain officers were murdered brought down morale in the command.

He said the police officers remained committed to their statutory responsibilities, thanking the governor for approving their requests.

The gesture, the police boss said, would restore confidence in the state’s police workforce.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of Research and Planning, Leye Oyebade, said the Police took away valuable lessons from the EndSARS protest, noting that there was no better time to fully implement the community policing than now.

He said the protest had ended and it was time for the police to win back citizens’ confidence and trust.

He said: “As police officers, we must now go back to the drawing board and cultivate the goodwill of the communities in which we operate. I’m particularly charging divisional police headquarters to devise strategies tailored toward your local realities and employ digital tools.”

Buhari wades in, orders payment of NDDC scholarship students

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the payment of fees and stipends of stranded scholarship students of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) studying abroad.

A statement signed by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said Buhari conveyed the directive to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, following the protest of the students.

Odili said the students would be paid by the end of the week explaining that the delay was caused by the sudden death of Chief Ibanga Etang, the then Acting Executive Director, Finance and Administration, EDFA, of the Commission in May.

Odili said: “Under the Commission’s finance protocol, only the Executive Director (Finance) and the Executive Director (Projects) can sign for the release of funds from the Commission’s domiciliary accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

“With the death of Chief Etang, the remittance has to await the appointment of a new EDFA. Senator Akpabio, the Honourable Minister, said President Buhari who has been briefed on the protest by students at the Nigerian High Commission in London, has ordered that all stops be pulled to pay the students by the end of this week. We expect a new EDFA to be appointed this week. As soon as that is done, they would all be paid.”
