Adesanya emphasised that IPAC’s mandate was not to oppose government blindly but to engage in constructive criticism while acknowledging genuine strides in governance.

“We recognize the steady growth of the SDP and the contributions of Barrister Gbenga Akinbuli to deepening democracy in Ondo State.

“His induction into the Council is a step in the right direction,” he said.

Adeniyi noted that the state SDP chairman’s contribution in IPAC would deepen democracy in the state.
In his response, Akinbuli appreciated the IPAC leadership in the state for the solidarity visit and pledged to continue supporting it’s programmes.

  • Court order: Dying minutes, INEC includes SDP candidates in Saturday by-election

Court order: Dying minutes, INEC includes SDP candidates in Saturday by-election

In compliance with a Federal High Court, Abuja, judgment, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will include the names of candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Saturday’s by-election.

The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun on Friday in Abuja.

Olumekun said that the commission had been served with the judgement of the court in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1525/2025 filed by the party challenging its omission in the by-election.

“In the judgement, the commission was ordered to include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidates in the by-elections in 12 states of the federation.

“The party did not earlier submit a valid notice for the conduct of primaries for the by-elections. For this reason, they were not monitored by the commission.

“However, in compliance with the judgment, the names of the candidates submitted manually have been accepted and published on our website. The party will participate in the by-elections.

“The commission wishes to assure the public, especially voters in the 12 states, that the 11th-hour judgment will not affect the election which will proceed tomorrow, Saturday Aug. 16, as scheduled,” Olumekun said.

The INEC commissioner, however, said that the commission woul exercise its legitimate right of appeal under the law.

The by-elections will cover two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, as well as nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.

Additionally, INEC confirmed that court-ordered re-run elections in Enugu South I State Constituency of Enugu State and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State will be conducted concurrently.

  • SDP State chairmen back suspension of national chairman

SDP State chairmen back suspension of national chairman

The Forum of Social Democratic Party (SDP) State Chairmen has expressed support for the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam and two other national officers.

The forum, at a news conference addressed on Friday in Abuja by its Chairman, Femi Ferrari, said that the suspension followed due process.

SDP National Working Committee (NWC) had on Tuesday announced the suspension of Gabam as the national chairman, Nze Clarkson as National Auditor and Uchechukwu Chukwuma as National Youth Leader.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, had, in  a statement in Abuja, stated that Gabam and others were suspended over allegations of gross financial misconduct, including funds generated from the 2023 general elections.

Aiyenigba said that the suspension was approved by the NWC, in exercise of its exclusive powers as guaranteed in Article 19.1; 19.3(i) and 19.5 of the party’s Constitution (2022 as amended).

Ferrari, after a meeting attended by 22 members of the forum, said that the suspension was part of the process to sanitise the party of corruption.

Ferrari said that the forum had expressed concerns about the suspended national chairman’s unilateral and autocratic leadership style, particularly in his interactions with the state chairmen and members of the NWC.

He alleged that since Gabam became the party’s national chairman, he had refused to call for National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting or remit money meant for the state chapters.

“It is important to note that all actions taken have been initiated by the state chapters. Our situation can be summarised by the phrase, “monkey dey work, baboon dey chop.

“This forum has repeatedly requested that the national chairman remit the state’s allocated percentage, as outlined in the constitution, but he has consistently ignored these requests.

“No state chapter has received any fund from the money raised, and whenever we inquire about our dues, we encounter threats of removal or suspension,’’ he said.

Ferrari called for an immediate investigation into all allegations against Gabam in a transparent, honest and fair manner.

“To this end, the forum has offered to nominate a member of the Disciplinary Investigation Panel who shall be a state chairman,’’ he said.

Ferrari urged the party leadership to allow the disciplinary committee or investigation panel free hand to do a truly honest, open, fair and legally just investigation without any political or other motivation or interference.

“We urge the investigation body to follow the rule of law and due process along the lines of natural justice and for the findings to be made public without delay,” he said.

He urged party members to remain calm and not be swayed by media manipulations regarding the suspended chairman, saying that the entire process followed the party’s constitution.

While maintaining that there was no crisis within SDP, he said that the party was committed to building a strong internal democracy and presenting Nigeria a credible alternative.

“We use this medium to assure all the members of SDP nationwide and all Nigerians that the leadership cleansing in the SDP is not about power play or 2027 or coalition or APC, PDP or other conspiracy theories.

“It is about doing the right thing in the party,’’ Ferrari said.

He said that leaders of political parties must know that when money was donated or contributed to the party, it was for the development of the party, not for an individual to appropriate as personal resources.

Ferrari said that for an opposition political party like SDP which Nigerians were looking up to, it had no other choice than to be and be seen to be above board, more than the proverbial Caesar’s wife.

Gabam had, however, described his suspension as “fake news” and a product of political mischief.

He urged members of the public to disregard the purported suspension, saying “I remain the national chairman of the SDP.’’

On the alleged financial misappropriation against him, Gabam described it as false, saying he had nothing to hide.

  • Suspended SDP National Chairman breaks silence

Suspended SDP National Chairman breaks silence

The National Working Committee (NWC), of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Tuesday announced the suspension of its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, signaling commencement of crisis in the party.

The suspension was contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba in Abuja.

Aiyenigba stated that Gabam, the National Auditor, Nze Nnadi Clarkson and the National Youth Leader, Uchechukwu Chukwuma, were suspended over allegations of gross financial misconduct, including funds generated from 2023 general elections.

Aiyenigba said that the suspension, which took effect immediately, was approved by the NWC in exercise of its exclusive powers as guaranteed in Article 19.1; 19.3(i) and 19.5 of the party’s Constitution (2022 as Amended).

He claimed that the decision followed a resolution of a meeting of the NWC, where overwhelming evidences were presented linking the suspended officials to series of alleged unauthorised financial transactions.

He further said that the suspension was to demonstrate to the public that the SDP is a disciplined party and a credible alternative political platform for national redemption.

He added that the party has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of office.

“The decision to suspend the National Chairman and other implicated NWC members is to allow for a thorough, investigation. Our integrity as a political party must be upheld at all times,” Aiyenigba said.

He said that an interim investigative panel had been constituted to audit all financial records and recommend further disciplinary or legal actions.

“In the interim, the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Sadiq Abubakar has been directed to assume leadership of the party, pending the outcome of the investigations.

“The suspension has been communicated to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), and all relevant anti-graft agencies and security agencies,” he said.

Gabam responding to his suspension, described it as fake, saying that he remains SDP national chairman.

He described the incident as one of the attempts by people trying to destabilise the SDP..

It was gathered that hoodlums suspected to be thugs later Tuesday evening stormed the party’s national headquarters, located at 16 Nairobi street, Wuse 2, Abuja.

The thugs according to an eye witness, dressed in black attires, unleashed violence on party staff members, including journalists invited for the NWC meeting.

The thugs beat some people mercilessly and denied people access to the gate leading to the secretariat.

But minutes later, another group of hefty looking thugs came and forced the secretariat’s gate open, leading to free-for-all fight amongst them.

Some people were manhandled by the thugs in the  process. Some of the unlucky persons attacked included reporters from Arise TV and the correspondent of Punch newspaper.

It, however, took the intervention of  some security operatives from Wuse Police Division and FCT command and personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to restore normalcy at premises.

It was learned that trouble started when security personnel at the gate locked out members loyal to the national chairman from entering the meeting venue.

The group while struggling to enter the meeting, pulled down the iron gate of the secretariat which resulted to escalation of the crisis.

My purported suspension as SDP National Chairman is a product of “political mischief” – Gabam

Meanwhile, the Alhaji Gabam has described his purported suspension as “fake news” and a product of political mischief.

Speaking to newsmen at the party national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, Gabam said he remained the party chairman.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Rufus Ayegbeni  had earlier in a statement announced the suspension of Alhaji Gabam and two other NEC members over allegations of financial mismanagement.

Gabam, who spoke flanked by some members of the party National Working Committee (NWC)  urged members of the public to disregard the purported suspension.

“I remain the national chairman of the SDP as you can see.”

He said that there was no official meeting of the NWC where the decision regarding his suspension was taken, wondering where the statement on the claimed suspension emanated from.

He recalled that a private legal firms had earlier approached the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) notifying it of a meeting of the NWC, signed by the National Secretary, Dr Olu Agunloye

He said that the letter was rejected by the commission, since it was not co-signed by him as the party national chairman.

“They used a legal firm, to communicate to the INEC. Which is a complete violation of the process of political party in terms of communication with INEC.

“If you look at the INEC letters, it specifies that any decision has to be jointly signed by the national chairman and national secretary.

“My signature is an authority signature. By our constitution, the national chairman is the national leader of the party and Chief executive of the party.

“INEC tagged the request by the party’s national secretary to hold the NWC meeting as illegal, since the letter was not signed by me,” he said.

On the alleged financial misappropriation against him, Gabam described it as false, saying he has nothing to hid.

He said that his accusers should remember they were the one raising memos and that all their names were in the party’s account statement.

“I’m sure by the time we submit the complete printout of our account from the banks to the security agencies, they will see everything.

“They will see everyone that money has gone into his account. Everyone. All the NWC members. It has not excluded anybody.

“He was once the chairman of the party. He should have also accounted for his own tenure when he was chairman of the party. I’m ready to account for my tenure any minute, any time,” he added.

He accused the new coalition being formed by some individuals in collaboration with some party national officials of being behind the recent crisis in the party, for their inability to hijack the party.

“I think we had this crisis before. It is now rearing its head.

“Some of us understand where it is coming from, because this coalition and some of the people in the coalition who believe that at all costs, they either get SDP or create confusion around SDP.

“So many forces from so many fronts see SDP as very deadly or very strong that they cannot maneuver over.

“We have been waiting for them to expose all their game plan, before we respond to it. Happily enough, they have officially exposed themselves today.

“I am sure Nigerians will get to know them, who are anti-democratic forces, who are conniving to disrupt political institutions, for whatever motivation. But I want to assure you that we are on,” he said.

Gabam, however, urged President Bola Tinubu to call the Nation’s security agencies to order so that politicians will not use them remotely to truncate democracy.

“They are not doing disservice to me. They are not doing disservice to this party. It’s a disservice to the country,” he said.

Aiyenigba in his statement had said that the decision to suspend Gabam and other implicated NWC members was to allow for a thorough, investigation.

He added that in the interim, the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Sadiq Umar Abubakar has been directed to assume leadership of the party pending the outcome of the investigations.

“The decision followed a resolution of a meeting of the National Working Commitee (NWC), where overwhelming evidences were presented linking the suspended officials to a series of unauthorized financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and movement of funds from the party’s accounts without necessary approvals of the NWC.

“The action of the NWC to suspend the National Chairman and two members of the NWC involved in the gross financial misconduct is to demonstrate to the general public that the Party, generally esteemed by Nigerians as a disciplined party and a credible alternative political plaform for national redemption has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of office.

  • June 12: No alternative to democracy – Ex-SDP presidential candidate

June 12: No alternative to democracy – Ex-SDP presidential candidate

The  Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewale Adebayo, says there is no alternative to democracy as it remains the best option for electing the country’s leaders.

Adebayo  said this during a visit to residence of  MKO Abiola  by members of  Pro-June 12 Movement and the Patriots in Ikeja on Thursday.

Adebayo noted that even though democracy,as of now,  might be imperfect, it still remained the fairest and surest way by which the minority could have their say and the majority, their way.

The politician said though democracy might not have met  expectations,  Nigerians still enjoy freedom of speech and association as well as the right to elect their leaders.

He said: “For us, our Democracy Day represents a statement of intent, irrevocable decision and irretraceable step in our march to freedom from military rule and dictatorship.

“Although the practice of democracy in our country may have fallen below the expectations of not a few, we take solace in the fact that we have freedom of speech and association and we elect our leaders fairly, even though not perfectly.

“In spite of the imperfections of our democracy, it remains the best option  for us in electing our leaders.

“In light of this, the task before us as a people and as a nation is to strive towards perfecting our democracy, especially in critical areas such as transparent and credible elections, accountable governance and citizen participation.”

The presidential candidate  charged public office holders to serve the people with humility, reminding them that government was not a place for revenge, personal reward, egoism.or  aggrandisement.

According to him, rather it is a place of to serve the rest of the citizens, who cannot converge on the State House or the National Assembly or judge every case in the judiciary.

Adebayo warned those in public office to be mindful of the fragile nature of the country, adding that
many heroes had passed away while many of the players were still alive.

He said Nigerians had learnt many lessons, as there were citizens’ lessons, political parties’ lessons, and civil society lessons.

The SDP candidate said there were institutional lessons for the military as well as lessons for the government of the day.

Adebayo, however, urged the electorate to hold leaders accountable, noting that poor governance could be challenged and changed through the ballot every four years.

  • We are ready to take over power in 2027 – SDP

We are ready to take over power in 2027 – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Thursday declared its readiness to take over power in Nigeria in 2027.

Abubakar Dogara, the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North-Central Zone, made the statement during the SDP North-Central Zonal Caucus meeting in Nasarawa State.

Dogara described the SDP as “the new bride of Nigeria,” claiming that the party’s membership is growing rapidly across the country.

“We are holding meetings at the zonal, national, ward, state, and local government levels.

“It’s all part of our preparations. Our membership cards are consistently exhausted at the state level,” he said.

He added that the party was building strong grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“So, we are preparing to take over the leadership of the country come 2027, by the grace of God. I believe SDP is now the bride of the nation,” Dogara said.

He urged Nigerians to join the party at their respective wards and support its candidates to transform the country’s political narrative.

Also speaking at the meeting, Idoko Idoto, the Benue State Chairman of the SDP, expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the next elections.

“Come 2027, I assure you, SDP is coming with full force. SDP will take over Benue State and Nigeria.

“We’ll win all the senatorial seats, House of Representatives, and the State Assembly will not be left out,” he said.

Idoto also recalled that the party had once governed Benue State, affirming that it had a solid foundation to build upon for future success.

  • Why I decamped to SDP – El-Rufai

    Why I decamped to SDP – El-Rufai

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, says his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is informed by the need to build a platform free from godfatherism and internal dysfunction.

He said Nigeria urgently needs a credible political alternative to rescue it from existential threats.

El-Rufa’i made the remarks in Kano on Monday while briefing  newsmen on why he decamped to the SDP.

He  said he was in Kano to visit the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and to meet with SDP leaders to strategize on building a strong grassroots political movement in the state.

“Kano is critical to any serious political formation because of its consistently high voter turnout.

“After joining the SDP, it was important to come and engage with stakeholders here,” he said.

On why he abandoned the APC, a party he helped to form, El-Rufai said the political realities in Nigeria had changed.

“Twelve years ago, we merged three major parties to form the APC and defeated an incumbent president. But now, the goal is different.

“We are bringing together disaffected members across political divides under an existing platform — the SDP — which we believe has the best pedigree and potential,” he said.

He said the SDP offers a fresh opportunity, being a platform not controlled by any individual.

“We have seen how godfatherism destroyed the PDP and is now wrecking the APC.

“Nigerians deserve a party built on fairness, internal democracy, and equal opportunity. The SDP can be that alternative,” he said.

Responding to suggestions that he was acting out of frustration after being sidelined politically, El-Rufai dismissed the notion, saying he had no personal ambition left to pursue.

“I am 65 years old. I have served Nigeria at the highest levels; minister, governor  and I could simply retire. But I believe Nigeria is facing an existential crisis. This is about the country’s survival, not personal gain,” he said.

On the contentious debate about rotational presidency, El-Rufai said while he previously advocated for a power shift to the South, Nigeria’s challenges now demand that competence and leadership capacity, not geography, should determine who leads.

“Our problems are too severe to care about where the next president comes from. We need someone with vision and the ability to fix Nigeria’s fundamental issues,” he said.

Speaking on the wave of political defections across the country, mostly to the ruling APC, El-Rufai said he was not concerned.

“A governor only has one vote. Elections are won by the people, not by politicians. Our focus is on mobilizing ordinary Nigerians, not chasing high-profile defections,” he stated.

On perceptions that the SDP is a northern movement, El-Rufai said the movement is national and growing quietly across southern Nigeria.

“You are seeing northern energy because we’re currently in Kano. But I have been engaging leaders across Lagos, Anambra, and the South-South. Nation-building is grassroots work, not media shows. You’ll see the results when the time is right,” he noted.

He also confirmed ongoing coalition talks involving five major political groups aimed at forming a strong opposition movement under the SDP.

“It’s a broader national movement for disillusioned Nigerians. Progress is being made, although I had to move faster in Kaduna because many of my political associates needed an immediate platform,” he said.

Defending his criticism of the APC, a party he helped to build, El-Rufai said his loyalty had always been to Nigeria, not to any individual or political party.

“When things began to go wrong under President Buhari, I wrote to him warning about the dangers.

“When the naira redesign policy hurt Nigerians, I challenged it in court, even though it was an APC-led government. I have never been loyal to individuals over the nation,” he said.

El-Rufai urged young Nigerians not to lose hope, calling on them to join efforts to build a new political movement.

“Nigeria gave me everything despite being an orphan at eight years old. Every Nigerian child deserves the same opportunity.

“If you are frustrated and angry, channel it into building a better future. We must not abandon Nigeria to corrupt politicians and their godfathers,” he charged.

  • You can’t hijack SDP for personal battle against Tinubu – Adebayo tells Atiku, El-Rufai

You can’t hijack SDP for personal battle against Tinubu – Adebayo tells Atiku, El-Rufai

Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo said efforts by  former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to hijack the party for personal battles against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be resisted.

Frowning at their unilateral approach to coalition, he said SDP is not a “getaway car for a conspiracy and robbery”.

Adebayo, who spoke during the 50th birthday of his wife, Queen Lillian Adebayo in Abuja, said SDP is not a platform for personal political battles.

Also yesterday, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National  Chairman Chief Olabode George warned Atiku for opening alliance talks on behalf of the party without consultation.

He also chided the former vice president for visiting former President Muhammadu Buhari in connection with coalition.

But Atiku fired back, saying that George was ignorant of his mission to Buhari in Kaduna, capital of Kaduna State.

His media aide, Paul Ibe, said in a statement that he only paid a post-sallah visit, and not a political visit, to Buhari.

Ibe said:”Bode George is ignorant of the place of the former President. He was President under an APC-led administration. But with the conclusion of his tenure, he is now a statesman who should be accessible to Nigerians, including the Waziri Adamawa.

“He is not occupying a partisan position. Atiku did not go to discuss coalition or politics with Buhari. He paid him a post-Sallah visit.”

Adebayo said the motive behind the coalition should be properly explained and understood before SDP can jump into it.

He also said the coalition notwithstanding, he would run for president in 2027.

Adebayo said: “Of course, my party knows that I’m running for the 2027 election. As for the coalition, we are listening to them. We don’t want to be a getaway car for a conspiracy and robbery we did not plan. That’s not available.

“If the coalition is for the Nigerian people, the SDP is available. But if it is just a crime centre for disappointed Tinubu followers, they should go back to him and resolve their differences there. Don’t come to SDP to borrow us for a fight we are not involved in.”

Former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who also witnessed the ceremony, took a swipe on the ongoing coalition move by opposition elements.

He said although he supported of coalition and opposition in a democratic setting, the individuals involved in the move lack the credibility to champion real change.

Sowore said: “I support coalitions and opposition. But not the kind that has people like El-Rufai. When the time comes, the moment they are offered what they want, they will go back to where they came from.

“The APC was a coalition. Did you forget? The people who are asking to form another coalition were former APC members. In fact, most of them were Buhari cabinet members who are supposed to be in prison forming a union of prisoners, not coalitions.”
