  • BREAKING NEWS: APC wins Ekiti governorship election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has retained the governorship seat of Ekiti State, winning in 15 out of the 16 Local Government Areas with 187,057 votes.

The party’s supporters leaped in jubilation in the early hours of Sunday when the results of Saturday’s governorship election showed Biodun Oyebanji defeated 15 other candidates.

Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) scored 82,211 votes while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bisi Kolawole, scored 67,457 votes.

Kolawole won in his Efon Local Government Area where he scored 6,303 to beat APC’s 4,012 and SDP’s 339 votes.

Residents of the State Capital, Ado – Ekiti, trooped to the streets to celebrate the victory in the dead of the night.

At the Government House in the Oke Ayoba area of the town, other APC governors, led by the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, monitored the exercise.

In Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area, where Oyebanji hails from, residents also began celebrating the victory of their kinsman at the poll.

Also in Ikere-Ekiti, where Oyebanji’s running mate, Mrs Monitade Afuye, hails from, residents also began celebration as the results were announced by the respective local government Returning Officers.

In different parts of the state also, some members of the ruling party celebrated the victory, describing it as well-deserved.

Our correspondents observed that prior to the announcement of the results at the collation centre, all the results from the 16 local government areas had been uploaded on the Result Viewing Portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission, known as IReV.

However, there were isolated cases of violence in some polling units.

For example, in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, the APC scored 9,679 votes ahead of SDP’s 4,577 and PDP’s 4,474 votes.

The Returning Officer for the LGA, Prof Gbolagade Jonathan, reported that there was violence in Units 5 and 7, where he said some hoodlums from nowhere carted away the ballot boxes, after firing gunshots.

Also, in Ikere LGA, the APC also won with 12,086 votes against the PDP and SDP, which scored 3,789 and 1943 respectively. The Returning Officer, Prof Emmanuel Ajava, announced that votes in Unit 2 of the LGA were cancelled due to violence.

Although the governorship election held across the 16 Local Government Areas and was relatively peaceful, incidents of vote-buying characterised the poll.

Candidates and agents of some political parties also alleged inducement of voters to deprive them of the opportunity of making their free choices.

It was gathered that some party agents were arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged vote-buying at a polling station at Ola Oluwa Grammar School, Ado Ekiti during the election.

A source, who spoke on the development, said the suspects were apprehended with a bag of cash allegedly being used to induce voters.

“One of the suspects, who claimed to be a party agent, was arrested and has been taken into custody,” the source said.

    Reactions:

    Allegations of vote-buying

The Social Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Chief Segun Oni, who voted at Ward 2, Unit 6 in Ifaki-Ekiti his home town, complained of vote-buying in Ado Ekiti and Oye Ekiti.

Oni, who described vote-buying as a violation of the Electoral Act, said, “I have been told that selling and buying of votes are going on in Ado and Oye. This is not allowed by the law. I want security agents to move in and stop those doing that.”

Also, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Dr Wole Oluyede, who voted at Igele Arokun Ward 3, Unit 6, Ikere Ekiti, said there was brazen vote-buying in the community allegedly perpetrated by agents of the All Progressives Congress.

Oluyede said, “The election today (Saturday) shows that we are not ready for democracy. The unfortunate thing is that those who took money do not want people to exercise their right to choose.

“Whatever is the outcome of the election does not reflect good governance and the wishes of the people. It does not reflect a good election. I wish Nigeria will be a better place for all of us.”

Similarly, the candidate of Action Democratic Party, Mrs Kemi Elebute-Halle, who voted at Unit 8, Ward 10, Odo Ayedun in Ikole LGA, lamented vote inducement, which she said did not make the election credible.

Elebute-Halle alleged, “In my polling unit, the APC gave N10, 000, the PDP gave N5, 000 while SDP gave N3, 000 per vote as inducement. The world is watching.”

The candidate, however, urged people to vote for a credible candidate, saying, “I want to rely on the commitment of our people to democracy. Irrespective of vote-buying, they would vote for me as their choice.”

Also, agents of the ADC and SDP at Ward 2 Unit 8, Iworoko, Ifelofun/Irepodun LGA of the state, alleged that a particular political party engaged in vote-buying.

The SDP agent, Bukunmi Oluwafemi, said the exercise was peaceful, observing that a party was involved in ‘see and buy,’ saying, “The voting went on well. People came out to vote. There is a party that is trying to do ‘see and buy’ but we have cautioned them.”

The ADC candidate, Yusuf Kehinde, who corroborated him, alleged that some people asked voters to reveal the party they voted for and collect money, saying, “They (voters) are showing their ballot papers to agents of a party and we said that shouldn’t be. A particular party is buying votes.”

But an APC agent, Muyideen Fatayo, who countered SDP and ADC agents, said, “There was no problem. Everything went well.”

His claim was also corroborated by the PDP agent in the ward, Matthew Fapohunda, who said the election was held without any hitch.

However, it was drama at Ward 10 Unit 9, Ilupeju along Ikere–Ado Expressway in Ikere Ekiti, Ikere LGA, as some officers of the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps allegedly stormed the polling unit and took away huge sum of money from some politicians.

A voter in the unit, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the undisclosed amount of money hijacked by the security men was meant for vote-buying in the area.

“They (NSCDC officers) stormed this unit and harassed the person holding the money. They collected the money from him and took it away. We who voted for APC and waited to collect our money could not get the money. It is disappointing. We were told that the money is over N2m,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, who voted at Are/Araromi/Ayetoro Ward, Unit 009 Ikere Ekiti, said the vote-buying money allegedly seized by security agents was not from his party, APC, saying, “I am not aware of that. And if they seized money, it was not seized from my party.”

The APC candidate, Oyebanji, also denied reports that he wooed voters with money in his hometown.

Oyebanji, in a statement by his media aide, Raheem Akingbolu, titled, ‘Oyebanji didn’t give money to any voter,’ said, “Contrary to the malicious report, neither Oyebanji, nor any of his supporters gave money to anybody at any polling unit in Ikogosi. Aside from being Oyebanji’s town, the candidate enjoys overwhelming support in the community with optimism of recording a 100 per cent result.”

    Disagreement among parties

Also, the ADC candidate, Oluyede, who alleged that there was no election in Ekiti on Saturday, said there was not anything fair or good about it.

He said, “In my polling booth, they didn’t start elections until 10am. It was after that the polling officer said that they didn’t have a stamp to complete the process. They brought out of a bag by 10am and it was evident that they were trying to make people get into fracas with one another. We maintained decorum. We didn’t fight but I don’t think anybody trusted anything after. About the security in town, everybody that was arrested today as far as I know was my person.’’

However, the PDP candidate, Bisi Kolawole, who voted at Ward 08, Unit 01, said, “The process has been peaceful. We just hope there won’t be manipulation.’’

Also, the APC candidate who voted at Okelele Ward 06, Unit 003, Ikogosi Ekiti, in Ekiti West LGA, lauded the process, saying, “This is an improvement. I am happy that there was no case of apathy. The security build up has also been impressive. The process has been good and fine.”

Both Oyebanji and Kolawole lauded the INEC and the Bimodal Voter Authentication System technology used, saying it was a great improvement.

In the same vein, a PDP chieftain and former deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, who voted at Ward 2,Unit 7, Okeruku, Ikere Ekiti, hailed the process, saying, “There was no hitch and the process was without any form of harassment in any part of the town.’’

    CSOs fault election

However, an election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, which confirmed voter inducement and bribery through its observations, added, “Secrecy of the ballot was compromised as people could see how voters marked the ballots in Igede Ward II 13-13-06-014 in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA.

Yiaga Africa Executive Director, Samson Itodo, said, “Party agents for the APC, PDP and SDP clustered around the voting cubicle and saw how voters marked their ballot papers. Yiaga Africa also received reports of missing names of registered voters on the BVAS. The voters were prevented from voting despite holding INEC issued PVCs.”

Also, the Nigerian Civil Societies Situation Room’s co-convener, James Ugochukwu, said though security officials arrived the polling units on time and were civil in their conduct, “the impact of their presence was not felt in voters’ coordination at most of the polling units. Also, the police failed to halt the apparent vote-buying witnessed by observers in virtually all the polling units.”

Ugochukwu said, “We wish to remind the police authorities of their responsibilities to halt and apprehend those involved in voters’ inducement and maintain law and order throughout the process and beyond.’’

NYSC hails exercise The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Fadah, expressed delight at the adequate security provided for corps members working as INEC adhoc staff across polling units in the 16 council areas of the state.

Fadah, who spoke in Ado Ekiti while monitoring the safety of corps members on election duty, said the election was peaceful, adding that, “The corps members in the various polling units are safe. I went round to see my corps members. They are all safe and the election calm.’’

    Withdrawal rumours everywhere

Some parties denied reports of their candidates’ withdrawal from the race, describing the reports as fake.

The SDP candidate, Oni, and his ADP counterpart, Elebute-Halle, were rumoured to have withdrawn from the race to support particular candidates.

But the Segun Oni Campaign Organisation described the reports as outright false.

The SOCO Director of Media, Jackson Adebayo, who said Oni’s signature in the letter conveying the withdrawal was forged, added, “We want to say categorically that the release is complete falsehood and forgery which the APC is known for. The fear of the APC from the beginning has been that should Segun Oni participate in this election, their candidate will be disgracefully voted against, hence they resorted to falsehood and forgery.”

Also, the ADP governorship candidate, Elebute-Halle, on Saturday denied stepping down from the race. Elebute-Halle, who said she was set to win the election, debunked the news that she stepped down from the contest, saying, “It is a lie concocted by those afraid of my rising profile. Having come this far, it would be cowardly of me to back out.”

    Police arrest four

The state police command arrested about four persons over disruption of electoral process in some polling units in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The state police spokesperson, Mr Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the development, said the suspects were in the command’s custody.

    We’ll sue INEC’

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged INEC to ensure the prosecution of politicians and other party agents arrested by security agents for alleged vote-buying during the exercise.

The group stated this in a post on its verified Twitter page, @SERAPNigeria, on Saturday. It stated that the commission risked a lawsuit if it failed to prosecute the suspects.

Operatives of the EFCC and men of the Nigeria Police Force were reported to have arrested persons suspected to be engaging in vote-buying during the election.

Some of the suspects were paraded at the Oke Ori Omi Divisional Headquarters of the Force. The suspects were reported to have been caught with monies allegedly used for vote-buying.

SERAP wrote, “#EkitiDecides2022: We’re suing to compel INEC to prosecute anyone suspected to be responsible for vote-buying and electoral bribery in Ekiti State and the politicians who sent them.”

    Fayemi, monarch happy

The state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said that the BVAS saved time and aided a large turnout of voters.

Fayemi made the remarks after casting his vote at Ogilolo Unit 009 Ward 11 in Isan-Ekiti, Oye council area. The governor, who voted around 9:15 am, said the process was seamless and a clear departure from the old system where accreditation of voters exceeded actual voting.

He said, “My PVC was still recognised through BVAS and this is the same PVC I have been using since the beginning of this process.’’

Besides, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Adejuwon, who is also Chairman, Ekiti State Traditional Council, described the voter turnout as unprecedented and encouraging.

Adejuwon said that the traditional council’s sensitisation and enlightenment prior to the election was yielding the desired results.

2023: Wadada receives heroic welcome in Keffi after defecting to SDP

Hon. Ahmed Wadada, a former member of the House of Representatives and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa state, brought Keffi town to a standstill during his defection rally to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Wadada, along with over 20,000 supporters, commenced the rally on Monday at the Keffi Flyover Bridge in Keffi local government area of the state before moving into Keffi township.

The rally caused traffic gridlock for many hours at the ever busy Keffi/Akwanga Federal highway and on major roads in Keffi where Wadada and his teeming supporters passed through.

In an interview with newsmen, Wadada notified his supporters and other locals of his intention to contest for the Nasarawa West Senatorial District seat at the Senate at the forthcoming general elections in 2023 so as to actualize his dream of giving them impactful representation at the National Assembly.

Wadada, who said he was optimistic of victory in the forthcoming general elections, said aside initiating people-oriented legislation in the Senate once elected, he plans to initiate projects that will have direct impact on the lives of the people so as to empower them and change their lives for good.

“The kind of projects I have for the people are the same kind of projects I carried out for the people when I was a member of the House of Representatives, which is why they are all in my support.

“I have added value to human capacity. I represented them very well in the past and helped bring civilization to the people,” he said.

He expressed delight over the massive support he received from the locals and added that he feels challenged to do much more for the people of the senatorial district if elected to represent them.

“I feel fulfilled and much more challenged because for God to bless me with this level of support, it is imperative for me to do much more than I have done before,” he said.

He explained that he left the APC due to what he called the controversy that trailed the recently-conducted Nasarawa West Senatorial District primary election which he described as illegal and undemocratic before he withdrew from the contest.

Hon. Jonathan Gaza, a two-term serving member of the House of Representatives representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, also defected to SDP alongside Wadada.

  • Ekiti 2022: Youths pledge support for ex-Gov. Segun Oni

The youths of Ifaki-Ekiti, the hometown of the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Segun Oni, have pledged to vote for him during the Jun 18 election.

A cross-section of youths who spoke to newsmen on Friday expressed their readiness to support Oni to become the next governor of the state.

They applauded him for his passion and determination to liberate the unemployed youths to become employers of labour or be gainfully employed.

One of the youths, Bode Oguntuase, a hair stylist, said that the youths of the community are ready to cast their votes for Chief Oni, a former governor of the state, to become the next governor of the state.

Oguntuase explained that Oni, during his first stint as governor, provided jobs for the youths, paid pensioners’ outstanding gratuities and pensions and created sustainable development.

“We the youths of Ifaki-Ekiti are all prepared to stand behind Chief Segun Oni because he is the only governorship candidate that will deliver based on his promises.

“Personally, my daddy, mummy and siblings are all going to cast our votes for him on the June 18 governorship election,” he said.

Another youth of the community, Miss Folasade Ajayi, a trader, said that regardless of the opposition parties’ plans to buy votes, God will give victory to the SDP governorship candidate.

Ajayi noted that the youths of Ifaki-Ekiti are fully in support of Oni and would stand by their votes on election day.

“We are not going to support by just speaking or saying it, we are going to cast all our votes for him during the June 18 governorship election.

“He is the only credible and honest person who can transform our land, state and lives,” she said.
Kolapo Okunola, another youth of the community and a student, said Oni is the only candidate who could create good jobs for the youths, offset outstanding gratuities of retirees and pay all civil servants’ entitlements.

Okunola stressed that he is ready to vote for Oni because he is a man of vision, who is not greedy and has the interest of Ekiti people at heart.

“Chief Segun Oni is a straightforward man, a man of vision who has the interest of his people at heart.
“I am going to vote for him because he will not allow pensioners to suffer, he will make life easy for the civil servant and create employment for the youths.

“I want to urge Ekiti youths to come out en masse and support the vision of Chief Segun Oni who has what it takes to transform the state,” he said.

Also speaking, Gbenga Anifowose, a student, urged the youths of the community not to allow themselves to be brainwashed and bribed to vote for any other candidate except Oni.

Anifowose said he is aware that other political parties are eager to buy votes with money but the youths of the community would not be carried away by their plans.

He appealed to the youths to vote for Oni and avoid selling their conscience by voting for any other candidate.

Prince Adewole Adebayo has emerged as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

Adebayo scored 1,526 votes at the party’s National Convention on Wednesday in Abuja to emerge as the party standard bearer, defeating the only co-contestant, Khadija Lamidi who polled 83 votes.

The Convention Returning Officer, Dr Umar Ardo put the total votes cast at 1,653; valid votes at 1,609, while invalid votes were 44.

In his acceptance speech, 54-year-old Adebayo, a lawyer and founder of KAFTAN Television said that with his emergence it was the turn of the Nigerian masses to take over power in 2023.

He said that it was the turn of the citizens without food, those who graduated without work or hindered from graduating because of strike to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Adebayo pledged that the SDP would give the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a ‘good fight’ in the 2023 general elections.

“We will campaign to every household, every polling unit, every ward, every local government, every state, every zone and the entire country.

“We will come out and show to Nigerians that food, water, electricity, housing, education and medical care are not prayer points,” Adebayo said.

He urged Nigerians to join the SDP, register with INEC to vote, open their minds, tell others about SDP and vote out bad leaders in 2023.

The presidential candidate thanked the other aspirants who contested the position with him, including those that withdrew along the way.

He thanked the SDP delegates for not going for money bags politicians or those who want to perpetually remain in power, but voted for a fresh person.

He said that the SDP had demonstrated that a party could conduct credible convention and that politicians could subdue their personal interest for the national interest.

The SDP National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, encouraged those who participated in the election to be part of the campaign, saying it was a joint project.

He said that the party would change the face and character of governance in Nigeria, if given a chance to rule in 2023.

Gabam said that the party considered it expedient to present itself to Nigerians as a veritable alternative, advocating a new initiative in the administration of the country.

He said that it was time for the country to get it right in 2023 general elections.

2023: Gbagi officially dumps PDP, emerges SDP guber candidate

A leading governorship aspirant in Delta State, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, has officially joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Gbagi, who is a former Minister of State for Education, also emerged as the governorship candidate of the SDP in Delta State for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Gbagi’s emergence is coming on the heels of his withdrawal from governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party held last week Thursday in Asaba.

The former Minister defected to the SDP after he fell out with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over his open support for the PDP governorship candidate and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori.

Gbagi emerged as the SDP Governorship Candidate during the primary of the party held at the Ughelli Kingdom Hall in Ughelli, Delta State.

The Oginibo-born politician and industrialist was the sole governorship aspirant of the SDP.

He emerged through a voice motion moved by a delegate from Bomadi Ward 3, Mr Mike Ujobolo. The motion was supported by another delegate, Pastor Victor Agbula Igbule from Ward 6 in Udu Local Government Area.

Gbagi was subsequently declared winner and candidate of the party by SDP returning officer, Pastor Highness Akporode.

Gbagi, represented by his political adviser, Chief Austin Kpomah, commended the delegates for making him the governorship candidate of the party.

He stated that SDP will defeat the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress – Chief Oborevwori and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in the 2023 general elections.

The former Minister promised to bring his wealth of experience as a businessman and industrialist to bear as governor of the state.

Gbagi called on Deltans to support him to rescue the state from the ruling PDP.

2023: Sen. Ikeyina emerges SDP presidential candidate

A former Senator representing Anambra Central, Sen. Ebenezer Ikeyina, on Tuesday emerged the factional Presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2023 general elections.

The Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee, of the faction, Chief Mike Odunrinde, who presided over the election, said that Ikeyina polled 308 votes to emerge winner.

Odunrinde said that out of the 311 delegates accredited, 308 voted in favour of Ikeyina, two voted against while only one vote was voided.

The chairman, who also announced that other presidential aspirants stepped down for Ikeyina, said that the election was free and fair, devoid of vote buying.

“We have organised our convention and you can see that voting is ongoing and no one is buying votes, those politicians buying votes are not coming to promote Nigerians aspiration.

“We must begin to imbibe attitudinal change and shun money politics if this country must move forward,” he stressed.

The Acting National Chairman of the party, Chief Supo Shonibare, while addressing the delegates, expressed optimism that the party’s candidates seeking various elective positions would be victorious at all levels during the 2023 general elections.

Shonibare said that after the National Convention and the final determination of the Court case, the party would have extra-ordinary convention.

He said this expected to involve members of the factional group, adding that “the SDP leadership is particularly mindful of the fate of our candidates.”

He gave assurance that some of the Aspirants who emerged as candidates at all levels who are not aware of the ongoing internal crisis would be protected from all forms of jeopardy that may happen in the nearest future.

He expressed confidence that  the party being led by himself in an active capacity until the next convention, would be victorious.

“It may not be as quickly as we wanted but I’m assuring you that we will be victorious.

“It may not be as quickly as we think but we are confident that we will prevail.  And one thing I can assure you is that we will not back-off.

“We will continue to extend olive branch to the other tendencies who we know were never elected and we are particularly mindful of the fate of our candidates.

“Because I tried to tell my colleagues that we must appreciate that candidates that have come as SDP candidates many of them may not know the division within the party,” he said.

The legal Adviser of the party, Mr Obi Okafor, said that the party had done what was expected of it by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

According to him, INEC stipulates that party should finish primary elections before a stipulated date.

He added that what the party had done did not go contrary to the court order, urging all factions of the party to maintain status quo.

Okafor said expressed the belief that no one will lose out anytime the court decided to settle the leadership tussle in the party.

The Vice Chairman SDP South East, Mr Endurance Philip, said that the current people in SDP were people who believe in labour, respect and integrity, devoid of immoral behaviour.

According to him, a Nigerian presidential candidate from the southeast is the only answer to the many challenges confronting the country.

He called on INEC to treat each faction in the party equally.

  • Segun Oni condemns Ekiti govt’s N183m jumbo payment to former council appointees

Governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ekiti State, Segun Oni, has kicked against the state’s payment of N183 million to former council appointees.

Oni described the payment as misplaced priority and an act of wickedness on the part of All Progressive Congress (APC), saying such action was questionable when salary arrears were unpaid.

A statement by his Campaign Council’s Director of Media and Publicity Jackson Adebayo said the action could dampen morale of workers.

He noted that ‘such jumbo payment cannot be justified in the situation where salaries are owed and pensioners are languishing in penury due to the government’s inability to pay gratuities’.

“We have been warning of evil plots of this government of no human face. This is purely not about politics, but about how men could be callous towards fellow men.

“Giving severance allowances to past political appointees in local governments at this period when workers are hungry and pensioners are dying , can’t be anything else but callous.

“Those who served the state with black hair are now dropping dead in their old age as they can’t afford their medication because their pensions are not paid.

“Ekiti people can confirm that what belongs to them is what the APC-led government is using to finance Governor Kayode Fayemi’s inordinate presidential ambition and his governorship continuity project.”

But Director of Media and Publicity of APC Campaign Organisation Taiwo Olatunbosun said Oni should ‘stop crying more than the bereaved’.

Olatunbosun, who described the former governor’s outburst as a ‘rough path to depression’, said he showed how ‘petty minded he can be with his statement’.

He counselled Oni to engage the people on his programmes instead of dwelling on inanities and unproductive propaganda to seek sympathy.

“It is my belief SDP should come out with sincere attitude to the people of Ekiti instead of trying to claim to be a saint, where it is not. Did it complain when Fayemi paid the money owed Oni?

“So, if they don’t have any achievements or manifesto to campaign with, they should keep quiet instead of seeking undeserved public sentiment and attention,” he added.

  • Shonibare an impostor, not our party member – SDP alleges

Shonibare an impostor, not our party member – SDP alleges

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has accused a lawyer and Lagos based politician, Chief Supo Shonibare, of being an impostor and hiding under the facade of being the factional national chairman of the party to collect illegal nomination, and expression of interest fees from aspirants seeking to contest the 2023 general elections under the SDP.

SDP National Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba, made the allegation in a statement issued to journalists in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The party clarified that Chief Shonibare’s stock in trade after his expulsion from the party, has been to misinform the public with a view to distract from the rising profile of the SDP as the credible alternative for Nigerians, seeking good governance and development as the nation counts down to next year’s general elections.

Ambassador Aiyenigba, in the statement, described him as an agent of destabilisation and distraction who since 2019 has engaged in shenanigans, including legal battles to take over control of the party as national chairman to no avail.

“On 7 February, 2019, Chief Olu Falae announced his resignation as national chairman of the party and his retirement from politics. Prof. Tunde Adeniran, then Deputy National Chairman (South) immediately ascended to the position of national chairman, in accordance with Section 12.5.1 (v) of the SDP Constitution, 2018.

“Chief Supo Shonibare, who was merely one of the six zonal chairmen of SDP at the time, rushed to Abuja on 11 February, 2019, claiming that he was acting under the directives of a local socio-cultural organisation to take over the SDP and proceeded to illegally announce himself as national chairman of the party.

“He was roundly ignored by the SDP leadership, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the public. After one year, a frustrated Shonibare headed to the Federal High Court in Abuja on 22 January, 2020, to urge the court to declare him as national chairman and to compel INEC to recognise him as such.

“He also sought from the court a declaration that the SDP constitution of 2011/2012 and the old SDP logo are the only valid tenders of the party and not the 2018 SDP constitution and the current logo which were duly ratified and adopted at the 6th October, 2018, national convention of the oarty in Abuja, under the supervision of the Independent Nation Electoral Commission (INEC).

“As at14 May, 2022, the Shonibare court case is yet to be formally heard at the Federal High Court, Abuja. It is noteworthy that INEC, as a defendant in the case, had sometime in 2020 and 2021, informed the court that the commission is not aware that Chief Supo Shonibare became the SDP national chairman at any point in time..

“In the meantime, it has become clear from his stance, that Chief Shonibare has consistently showed the restlessness of a man that knows that his case has no merit,” the SDP image-maker stated.

According to Amb. Aiyenigba, in utter disregard of the pending case in court, Chief Shonibare, proclaimed himself as the SDP acting national chairman and proceeded to announce fake schedules for congresses and conventions, including reeling out rules and conditions for aspirants wishing to fly the party’s banner in 2023.

“He acted completely in contradiction and in conflicts with the Electoral Act, 2022 and in utter disdain for the role and rules of INEC. This brazen disregard for the electoral law and the regulatory body, INEC has confirmed that Shonibare is only out to cause distraction for the leaders of the Social Democratic Party.

“It has also become evident that Chief Supo Shonibare is being motivated by fraud and intention to commit crime. As a matter of fact, Chief Shonibare has now taken to public media platforms and social media to advertise and canvass for sales of bogus forms for phantom SDP congresses, convention and nomination forms to contest elections.

“He also asked unsuspecting members of the public to make payments to illegal bank accounts.

“The party hereby uses this medium to announce that Chief Supo Shonibare is not a member of the SDP, but an impostor and impersonator aiming to defraud the public by posing as the SDP national chairman and indulging in criminal acts like soliciting for unauthorised fees and collecting monies under false pretext.

“The national leadership of the party hereby warn party members nationwide and the public in general not to deal with Chief Supo Shonibare on any matter relating to the Social Democratic Party, and enjoins anyone who had already fallen victim to his mischief to report immediately to the Nigeria Police or other law- enforcement agencies,” he added.

2023: No automatic ticket for Bola Tinubu – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has indicated that no automatic ticket for All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other aspirants willing to contest for elective positions in 2023 on the party’s platform.

The Acting National Chairman of SDP, Chief Supo Shonibare, who stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, however, said the party would provide succor for aggrieved aspirants from other parties.

TheNewsGuru reports that, there were speculations that the APC chieftain might likely defect to SPD if he failed to pick the APC presidential ticket.

Shonibare said while those who felt cheated in other political parties could come and join the SDP to pursue their political ambitions in 2023, they should be ready to submit themselves to stringent condition, including integrity test.

He also clarified that the APC chieftain was not a registered member of the SDP.

“On the issue of Asiwaju Tinubu, the last time I checked, he is not a member of the SDP.

“I checked on the list because the membership list of our party as INEC has required, has already been submitted by our state chapters to us in Abuja.

“His name is not among those who are members of our party in Lagos State. That’s all I can say, he’s not a member of SDP,” he said.

He, however, said that Tinubu or any other aspirant from other registered political parties interested to join the party was welcome.

“Yes, we welcome anyone felt cheated by other political party, but must be consistent with integrity.

“If he (Tinubu) comes, it won’t be automatic, what we would emphasise is consistency with integrity within the public officer.

“Also anyone who is controversial, rated low or with baggage, who doesn’t have integrity will not be allowed. SDP leadership does not want the party to be an opportunistic vehicle,” he said.

Shonibare maintained that the party would only give consideration to individuals cheated by his party but not for anyone in controversial circumstances

“In instances where we’ve seen great injustices to an individual, who we feel is not coming to us with baggage, yes that individual will be welcome to SDP.

“But we won’t welcome anyone who we feel has a pending court case. We won’t welcome anyone that has been convicted, even if the person is actually now appealing that conviction.

“So we will try to ensure that those who we will welcome into our party, are men and women of integrity, making SDP to be a succor for those who have been wrongly dealt with in their political parties.

“Provided those who are coming themselves have displayed integrity and honour in the way and manner they themselves have conducted themselves in government,” he said.

On the party leadership crisis, Shonibare maintained that INEC lacked the powers to determine who the authentic leadership of SDP is.

“INEC is not the court of law, so it cannot determine which fact is the rightful leadership of the party.

“It is the constitution of the party, the rules of the party and the determination of the court that will determine who is the legitimate leadership of the party. It is that process that INEC will oblige to accept,” he said.

Shonibare said, while INEC was set up to observe and issue guidelines for conduct of elections, it was not its responsibility to determine a faction to be recognised when there were parallel or faction congresses.

He reiterated the resolve of the Party’s leadership towards ensuring that sanity was restored, adding that there was the need for the party exercise caution.

He said that the party would resist attempt to make the SDP ineffective or ineffectual in the contest for power and render it an ally of the lackluster ruling regime.

“We shall resist the machinations of the burgeoning usurpers,” he said.
