Nigerians would plead with Tinubu for second term, says Beta Edu

The national woman leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Betta Edu has said Nigerians will beg the President-elect, Bola Tinubu to run for a second term in office after four years in office.

Edu disclosed this in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.

According to her, Tinubu is fully prepared to “hit the ground running” immediately after assuming office.

The women leader said Tinubu will work on the “low points” of the outgoing administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I bet on anything, Nigerians would plead with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, four years down the line, for a second term.

“The first point we must understand is that Nigeria is a work in progress. If you listen to the speech of President Muhammadu Buhari today at the state banquet hall, he stated very clearly that he has fought a good fight.

“He said he is handing over Nigeria to someone who he believes will continue from where he stops and do better.”

Edu said Tinubu has a clearly written set of programmes that will be carried out in the first 60 days in office.

She said, “If you know Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, he is a deep thinker and doer. One who is very strong in terms of analysing and strategising.

“I can boldly tell you for free that the next 60 days have clearly been spelt out by Tinubu — what he hopes to do, what he hopes to achieve, at what point and where.

“He fully understands the task ahead of him. He is fully prepared. He wants to hit the ground running.”

Portugal nominates UN Secretary General, Guterres for second term

The Portuguese government has officially nominated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a candidate for a second term in office.

UN spokesman, Mr Stephane Dujarric, disclosed this at his daily news briefing in New York on Wednesday.

He said the nomination came in a letter addressed to the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Security Council.

Guterres, 71, a former Prime Minister of Portugal, became the ninth Secretary-General following his election by the UN General Assembly on Oct. 13, 2016.

On Jan. 11, Dujarric confirmed that the UN chief, whose current term expires on Dec. 31, would be seeking a second five-year term beginning in January 2022.

Article 97 of the UN Charter empowers the General Assembly to appoint the Secretary-General on the recommendation of the Security Council.

This means that any of the five permanent members of the council, who will make their choice known in coming months, can veto Guterres’ nomination.

The selection process of the next Secretary-General officially began on Feb. 6 with a joint letter by the General Assembly and Security Council presidents asking member states to nominate candidates.

As of the time of filing this report on Wednesday evening, only Guterres was known to have been nominated for the post.

In January, Honduras’ permanent representative to the UN, Amb. Mary Flake, also sent a letter to all member states asking them to present female candidates.

Flake said there had never been a female secretary-general, adding that she is “wring from a place of conviction, where standing for equal rights makes a difference in creating a fair and equitable organisation”.

Guterres’ election in 2016 came as a disappointment to women, who had hoped to break the male dominance of the post.

Thirteen candidates, comprising seven women and six men, contested for the post then.

  • US presidential poll: Republicans officially nominate Trump, Pence for second term

US presidential poll: Republicans officially nominate Trump, Pence for second term

U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were on Monday officially nominated for a second term at the Republican National Convention, during a scaled down roll call vote in Charlotte, North Carolina.

States were limited to six delegates at the Charlotte Convention Center, 336 total for the live roll call, unlike the Democratic National Convention where the roll call was done virtually.

Vice President Mike Pence made brief comments at the convention.

The roll call is usually held on Tuesday but was moved up by the party’s updated schedule.

The event, scheduled to run through Thursday, will be largely virtual. Some small, official business will still take place in Charlotte, N.C.

After some last-minute wrangling to attempt to move the convention to Jacksonville, Fla., the GOP settled on keeping Charlotte as its base, but severely limiting the number of in-person events that take place there.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned in June it was likely that safety measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 wouldn’t be lifted in time for Republicans to hold their full program of events with thousands of supporters, delegates and elected officials in attendance.

Originally scheduled to be held at the Spectrum Center, the in-person events, including Monday’s roll call of delegates, took place at the Charlotte Convention Center. Most other events will be virtual, including Trump’s acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday.–UPI
