I won’t withdraw from court- Secondus

Uche Secondus, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says he has no intention of withdrawing the case challenging his removal from court.

Mr Ike Abonyi, his Media Adviser disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
Abonyi said that Secondus was in court to seek for justice as well as save the party from manipulations.
“The attention of the media office of Secondus has been drawn to an unsubstantiated report claiming that he is under pressure to withdraw his case against the party from court.

“The truth which the said news did not state is that Secondus is not in court against the party, but was dragged to court by persons bent on hijacking the soul of the party.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the media office wishes to restate that Secondus is really under pressure for justice and will seek it anywhere to save the party from destruction,” he said.
Abonyi said that the party leaders were aware of the situation and knew what to do to rectify the problem.
“Nothing short of justice will save PDP from the current situation.
“For avoidance of doubt, the justice Secondus is seeking is as enshrined in the party’s constitution which is supreme.
“The constitution states clearly how a national chairman and any national officer can be sanctioned even where there is a known breach, talk less of where there is none,” he said.

More headaches for embattled Uche Secondus as Port Harcourt High Court validates his suspension as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Justice Okugbelem Gbasam in delivering judgement, relied on Secondus’ suspension by Ward 5 in the Andoni local government area of the State as brought forward by Ibeawuchi Ernest Alex and four others against Secondus and the PDP.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Justice Gbasam also granted the aggrieved PDP members’ requests to retrain or suspend Uche Secondus from attending or conveying PDP meetings in his capacity as National Chairman or as a party member.

However, Uche Secondus’ lawyer expressed displeasure with Justice Gbasam’s decision, stating that his client will file an appeal.

PDP Crisis: Court declines to hear suit empowering Secondus to call for, preside over meetings

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has declined to entertain a suit filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking to restrain the party and any of its members from calling, summoning, or presiding over any meeting, except it is called by embattled National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

In a ruling on Thursday, Justice Tijjani Ringim declined to entertain the suit on the grounds that it was not ripe for hearing since the defendants listed therein were yet to respond to it.

Listed as plaintiffs in the suit were Mr Eddy Olafeso, Mr Rashidi Sunmonu, Mr Daisi Akintan, Mr Bunmi Jenyo, and Mr Wahab Owokoniran.

They are seeking among other reliefs, “An interlocutory order of injunction restraining the first, third, fourth, and fifth defendants by themselves, their servants, agents, privies or any member of the defendant whatsoever, other than the second defendant, from calling, summoning or presiding over any meeting of the party whatsoever, including the meeting of any committee of the party, any congress of the party, the National Working Committee, the National Executive Committee, the National Convention, and all other organs or bodies of the party pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.”

Those listed as defendants are the PDP, Secondus, Yomi Akinwonmi (PDP Deputy National Chairman, South), Senator Suleiman Nazif (PDP Deputy National Chairman, North), Senator Ibrahim Tsauri (National Secretary, PDP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, counsel to the plaintiffs, Chimezie Ihekweazu (SAN), told the court that his client’s application was ripe for hearing following a ruling delivered by the court on September 1, that all parties in the suit be put on notice while the court fixed September 9 for hearing of the suit.

But a lawyer, Mr Chuks Ugo, announced his appearance for the PDP and Senator Tsauri – the first and fifth respondents – while another lawyer, Mr Oladayo Ilori, held the brief of Mr Olatunbosun Osifowora who also claimed to be representing all the defendants in the suit except the party’s embattled national chairman, Secondus (the second defendant).

Mr Ugo and Mr Ilori both informed the court that they have the mandate of the defendants to represent them in the suit.

After listening to both lawyers, Justice Ringim held that the two counsels were in disharmony and cannot represent the same client.

He asked the parties to resolve the issue of legal representation.

The judge also held that since the plaintiff’s processes were served on the defendants on September 2, the defendants were still within time to file their responses.

He declared that the motion was not ripe for hearing.

While citing the recent comments of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on conflicting court orders, Justice Ringim sought to know if the present suit was not before another court and did not constitute an abuse of the court process.

He also said the suit would be returned to the Chief Judge of the court for reassignment, as there was no urgency in the affidavits filed by the applicants to entertain it during the court’s vacation.

Secondus reacts to Rivers PDP chairman’s allegation of working against Southern Nigeria, not paying dues

The embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has denied the allegation that he is working against the interest Southern Nigeria.

Secondus stated this in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mr Ike Abonyi, in Abuja on Friday.

It noted “the Media Office of Secondus will continue to respond to even laughable talks because of the danger of allowing disinformation to enter public space unchallenged.”

It stated that one of such piece of false information being dished out was the allegation from the Rivers State Chairman of PDP, Amb. Desmond Akawor, that Secondus was working against Southern interest and that he had not paid his dues to the party.

“We understand the frustration of the anti-Secondus crusaders who have become evidence shopaholics in their desperation to find points with which to achieve their ignoble goals.

“The Media Office sees their effort as a case of bad marketer selling a product, who puts in several efforts to convince buyers to no avail.

“Our response is that there is no truth in all the allegations and Southern interest will be grossly endangered if it is the likes of Akawor and his clique that are pushing it,” the statement said.

The Secondus Media Office said that critical members of PDP, including discerning members of the public knew as a fact that” no one person, no matter his position, could determine singularly the position of offices in the party.

“The Media Office will, however, continue to urge members of the public and the media to be wary of compulsive shoppers whose agenda is mainly to distract and destroy this party and remove its focus from retuning to power in 2023 as being yearned by Nigerians,” the statement said.

JUST IN: Rivers PDP ward suspends national chairman Secondus

The Peoples Democratic Party Ward 5 in Ikuru town, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State has suspended the embattled National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus.

Secondus is a prominent politician from Andoni in Rivers State. He was a former Chairman of the PDP in Rivers and a former National Organising Secretary of the party.

The Ward Chairman of the Party, George Christopher, announced this at the party’s extraordinary meeting at the party’s Secretariat at Ikuru town, Andoni Local Government Area.

The chairman said eleven executive members out of the 17 endorsed Secondus suspension from the party.

Christopher said the national chairman had not attracted development to the area despite his high political profile and inability to manage the party

Christopher stated, “The Ward executive of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ward 5, Ikuru town, and the leaders met on the 31st of August, 2021 issues that affect the party.

“Suspension of Prince Uche Secondus was done by the Ward executive after a duly constituted Ward meeting called by the Secretary on the instructions of the Chairman, according to the Constitution of our great party.”

Also speaking, former chairman of Andoni LGA and chairman, Disciplinary Committee in the Ward, Benson Alpheous, noted that Secondus was suspended for disobeying the party’s decision for him to step down as national chairman.

“Until further notice, our brother, Prince Uche Secondus remains suspended. I want to thank you for coming and again, reaffirm the suspension of Uche Secundus.

“For now, until you hear from us again, Prince Uche Secondus remain suspended,” he added.

Efforts to reach the State Chairman of the PDP, Desmond Akawor, for his comments concerning Secondus’ sacking were unsuccessful.

Also, attempts to reach Secondus proved abortive.

  • Oshiomhole, Secondus ‘sacrificial lamb’ for ambitions, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Oshiomhole, Secondus ‘sacrificial lamb’ for ambitions, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
Coincidences! Ironies! Similarities! Ambitions! Retributions! These are the issues that played out in the ruling All Progressive Congress, and are tearing apart the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, as regards the national chairmen of the rival political parties.
In 2020, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was sacked as chair of the National Working Committee of the APC despite his piloting of the party to an across-board victory in the 2019 general election.
Currently, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, is on the verge of going the Oshiomhole way, courtesy of orchestrated campaign to get him out by any means possible.
As the judiciary was prompted to “intervene” in the internal matters of the APC in 2020, the courts have been drafted in to “interfere” in the domestic affairs of the PDP in 2021, and courts of coordinate jurisdiction are issuing conflicting rulings on the same matters.
Like in Oshiomhole’s case, two Southern courts have suspended Secondus from acting or parading himself as the national chairman of the PDP, while a Northern court has reinstated him forthwith.
And as it happened in the APC crisis, aftermath of Oshiomhole’s suspension, two deputy chairmen of the PDP scrambled to occupy Secondus’s office and control the PDP secretariat in Abuja.
Interestingly, the coincidences, ironies and similarities in the APC and PDP scenarios originated from Oshiomhole and Secondus’s home states of Edo and Rivers in the South-South zone.
More concerning is that the Oshiomhole and Secondus matters are grounded in political ambition of one governor fighting to retain his position, and another governor aiming for a higher office.
Oshiomhole earned the ire of Governor Godwin Obaseki, for attempting, and eventually thwarting his nomination for re-election on the platform of the APC that Oshiomhole then superintended.
And for retribution, Obaseki reportedly instigated Oshiomhole’s suspension by 10 of a 26-man APC executive committee of Oshiomhole’s ward in his local government area of Edo State.
As Oshiomhole called the bluff of his suspension by the minority ward executive, the matter was advanced to the courts, with the lower and appeals courts affirming his suspension.
The last straw came via the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC, which sacked the Oshiomhole-led NWC, and replaced it with a Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee.
To think that Oshiomhole and Obaseki were political soul mates, and Oshiomhole, as governor, groomed, picked, campaigned and secured victory for Obaseki to succeed him in office in 2016, only for Obaseki to ignite the fire – rekindled by APC members nursing presidential ambition – that literally consumed Oshiomhole!
Satirically, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who heads the APC caretaker committee, is mired in controversy over his eligibility for holding the position concurrently as governor, and under pressure from dissatisfied APC members to resign the chair.
Besides, the PDP has mounted attacks in Abuja and Yobe, to get Buni relieved of the offices of chairman of the APC and governor of Yobe, and, like the aggrieved APC members, the party is in court, praying for the sack of Buni from Abuja and Yobe, accordingly.
On his part, Prince Secondus has incurred the wrath of fiery Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, credited as the sole sponsor and installer of Secondus to the chair of the PDP.
So, why would Wike call for Secondus’s head, his protégée, who, as the saying goes, “has been very loyal” to the governor? Ambition! Raw and vaunting ambition that brooks no scruple!
Wike hasn’t indicated interest for any office, but his body language is unmistaken for the President or Vice President, to enhance his profile and compensate for shouldering the PDP since 2015.
Yet, there’s an obstacle to Wike getting his dream realised, and that’s Secondus, whose retention of the PDP chair beyond 2021 may put spanner in the governor’s well-oiled works for 2023.
Secondus had to go prior to the PDP national convention, as Wike allegedly fears that without his support, Secondus could swing a second term in office, and put paid to his presidential aspiration.
With Secondus back in office, the PDP would zone the presidential ticket to the North, and Wike’s ambition would be up in flames, as he and Secondus are from Rivers in the South-South.
Getting Secondus out of the way initially involved simultaneous protests by groups in the PDP for him to resign, and the sudden resignation of seven party officers, to pile pressure on him.
Several meetings by PDP stakeholders culminated in bringing forward the national convention from December to October 2021, to give Secondus a breather and soft-landing, and mollify Wike.
That didn’t work, as Secondus reportedly planned to botch the October convention. Hence, four PDP members sought an interim injunction to stop him from further holding the party chair.
Still, as the high court in Rivers State granted the plaintiffs’ ex parte application, suspending Secondus pending the determination of the substantive suit; a counter-ruling of a court in Kebbi State reinstated Secondus, in a suit brought by three PDP members.
But not before, like in the Oshiomhole case in the APC, a struggle to occupy the Secondus briefly-vacated national chair of the PDP NWC pitted two national vice chairmen against each other.
The Deputy National Chairman (North), Sulaiman Nazif, citing “incapacitation” of the Deputy National Chairman (South), Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, had usurped the post as acting chairman.
Barely three hours later, Elder Akinwonmi showed up at the same PDP secretariat in Abuja, flanked by the party National Secretary, Ibrahim Tsauri, who had accompanied Nazif earlier on.
Noting Nazif’s taking undue advantage of his indisposition, Akinwonmi declared that, “everything conducted here while I was not here is null and void,” adding that, “at the appropriate time, we will call a meeting of NEC, BoT and we will meet here.”
Akinwonmi was unanimously endorsed by the NWC, and the PDP Governors’ Forum, whose chairman and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, said the party would abide by the Rivers court dictate that Secondus should step aside.
The question then was: Would the PDP also obey the ruling of the Kebbi court that ordered immediate reinstatement of Secondus in the legal issues filed against the PDP and Secondus?
That looked unlikely as at August 27 when the PDP caucus met at the party secretariat in Abuja. With Secondus absent, Akinwonmi presided, and the October national convention was re-affirmed.
In the mix came spokesman, Ike Abonyi, refuting a report that Secondus would challenge his suspension, even as Secondus reportedly stated that, based on his reinstatement, he’d return to his seat on August 27, but didn’t show up at the caucus parley.
But social media reports claimed that Secondus resumed office on August 27, and Akinwonmi handed over to him. The News Agency of Nigeria quoted Secondus thus: “We obeyed the court order from Port Harcourt. We also obey the one of yesterday (Thursday). This is a party that follows the rule of law, that obeys court orders.”
There wasn’t a timeline to the said event, but Akinwonmi had reportedly admitted that he’s handed a letter, which he didn’t reveal its content, as he arrived for the caucus meeting on August 27.
Was that “letter” a notice of the Kebbi court ruling, which restored Secondus to his office, and had to be obeyed by Elder Akinwonmi in tune with PDP’s boast of respecting lawful court orders?
Again, not surprising, a court in Cross River State was to intervene in the PDP crisis on August 27, barring Secondus from functioning as national chairman or presiding over the August 28 meeting of the National Executive Committee of the PDP.
Perhaps, in deference to the latest court order, Secondus wasn’t at the NEC meeting, as at the time of this report, on August 28. But will he also abstain from office on August 30 (today)?
Whatever, Secondus may go the way of Oshiomhole, to complete the cycle of coincidences, ironies and similarities of events in the APC and PDP that aren’t happenstance, but contrived for political ambition, with retribution visited on the likes of Oshiomhole and Secondus for constituting “obstacles” to achieving the aspiration!

PDP crisis: I haven’t stepped down as chairman – Secondus

The embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has denied stepping down from his position.

A statement by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, on Saturday, said Mr Secondus was absent from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in obedience to the interim order by the Cross River State High Court, Calabar, restraining him from functioning in that position.

The court issued the order on Friday.

It would be the third time in one week that courts in the country would issue orders on Mr Secondus.

A Rivers High Court sitting in Port Harcourt had on Monday restrained Mr Secondus from parading himself himself as the PDP national chairman.

Four days later, a Kebbi State High Court sitting in Birnin-Kebbi reinstated him.

As a result of the latest order by the Cross River High Court, Mr Secondus had earlier on Saturday asked his deputy (South), Yemi Akinwonmi, to preside over the NEC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

In the statement, Mr Secondus said his four- year mandate would expire in December having been elected on December 10, 2017.

Meanwhile, the NEC, at its meeting on Saturday, confirmed that the national convention would hold in Abuja on October 30 and 31 to elect new members of the national Working committee.

    Read the full statement below.

    Secondus has not stepped down.

…..just obeying Calabar Court interim order.

The media office of Prince Uche Secondus wishes to correct erroneous news circulating that he has stepped down as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Prince Secondus by his unavoidable absence at the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting on Saturday was merely obeying an interim order from Cross River state High Court.

As a law abiding citizen who has been an adherent of rule of law as a basis for democracy stayed away in respect for the courts.

Prince Secondus’ four year mandate to lead the party given on December 10, 2017 ends by December, 2021.

By this release, media office wishes to urge media houses and members of the public particularly beloved members of PDP to disregard any news suggesting that he has stepped down.

    Signed.

Secondus absent as Akinwonmi presides over PDP NEC Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party’s 92nd National Executive Committee meeting was presided over by Elder Yemi Akinwonmi on Saturday.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Akinwonmi is the acting National Chairman of the party after a court order restrained Uche Secondus from the role.

The embattled chairman as has since obtained another court order reinstating him as the National Chairman. Meanwhile, in what appeared like a new twist, the Cross River High Court barred Secondus from henceforth parading himself as the national chairman of the major opposition party.

TNG gathered that Secondus had in a letter asked Akinwonmi to preside over Saturday’s meeting in his absence.

“I hereby request you to preside over the National Executive Committee meeting of the Party, taking place today, 28th August, 2021@ 12 noon, in my absence,” the letter read.

At Saturday’s meeting, Akinwonmi said consultations within the party are yielding desired results.

He condemned the country’s deteriorating security situation and high cost of living owing to the weakness of the naira against other currencies.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jubril, said the problems in the party are not insurmountable.

He noted that challenges and disputes are a fact of life in any party, but how they are resolved matters most.

He advised the party not to fail Nigerians, as it remains the last hope of citizens.

There is no way the PDP can win elections if it is divided, he added.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also expressed confidence in the party’s internal mechanism to resolve its crisis.

He also took a swipe at the incumbent government, insisting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government has taken the country backward since they came into power in 2015.

The court also restrain him from participating at the National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Saturday.

This fresh order was issued by the presiding Judge, Justice Edem Kufre on Friday.

The order came as a result of expulsion from the party by members of his ward in Andoni local government area of Rivers state.

The case was adjourned to 7/(/2021) for the hearing of the motion on notice.
