Buhari approves new security measures to tackle unrest in South-East, South-South

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved new security measures to tackle cases of social unrest and violent crimes in the South-East and South-South geo-political zones of the country.

The acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, made this known when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting of the National Security Council, presided over by President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Baba, who briefed alongside the National Security Adviser to the President (NSA), retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, said Buhari gave the approval during the security meeting.

According to Baba, the meeting, which has taken place three times during the last 11 days, assessed the situation in the country, particularly South-East and South-South, as it affects law and order.

He said: “We have some measures which we have outlined and have been approved by the Council and we’ll see how we can change the narrative within the quickest possible means to restore law and order and restore peace in that area.

“We solicit all law abiding citizens to work with us to identify and deal with the situation. That is that, I may not go into the details of how we will do that.”

On his part, the NSA disclosed that President Buhari had directed security agencies in the country to deal decisively with those perpetrating violence or causing mayhem in any part of Nigeria.

According to him, the president will not relent in his duty of ensuring every Nigerian is protected.

“What I am saying has to do with the orders given by the President, Commander in Chief to the Chief of Defence Staff, including the Service Chiefs, including the Inspector General of Police.

“I do not think I will want to go into details of the new measures.

“We have decided not to go along the path that we followed in the past whereby, certain operation and tactical decisions were made public; of course, we are in a situation whereby, we are fighting enemies that are not really known.

“The important thing is that the President has given us marching orders to deal physically with the emerging problems and of course, dealing with it from the realists’ paradigm,

“President Buhari‘s approach to dealing with this problem basically is that he recognises that his primary responsibility is ensuring national survival in a hostile environment.

“Whether that hostility is domestic or external, it has to be suppressed and therefore, he has given a clear line of action to the operational elements under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff,” he said.

According to the NSA, dealing with the current security challenges remains a priority, in order to return and sustain peace in all troubled parts of the country.

“The most important thing is that we have to subjugate all other requirements in order to deal with the present crisis of insecurity in the country.

“All other national objectives and obligations have to be subordinated to the primary concern of bringing back security and normalcy to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and allowing the entire citizenry to undertake their legitimate obligations without any fear of being intimidated or coerced by non-state actors,’’ he added.

Irabor also pledged more commitment and professionalism from the Armed Forces, as they tackle the nation’s security challenges, adding that peace would surely return to the troubled areas of the country.

Insecurity: Reps make grand move to move power, security to Concurrent List

Apparently disturbed by incessant killing of Nigerians across the country, some members of the House of Representatives are in a move to make sure power and security are moved into the Concurrent List.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the move is to ensure that the heavy burden of securing and providing electricity by the centre is shifted to the states.

One of such lawmakers from the South West geopolitical zone told TNG: “if we succeed in doing this, states will now have the power to provide electricity and police for their citizens.

“We’ll ensure it’s included among laws to be amended by the Constitution Review Committee in this ninth Assembly”.

Asked if the North that has the number to knock it off moves against it what will happen, the Lawmaker said: “the situation in our country affects everybody, it’s not about the north or the south again.

“We are all living in perpetual fear because insecurity has no colour, religion or state, it’s biting us all so we must all work towards moving it from the Exclusive List.

“In the US we have the FBI that oversees Federal matters while the state also have their own jurisdiction, we can’t continue like this.

“Let each state police their territories according to their abilities and we know if nothing is not urgently done now we are heading to a terrible end”.

Another Lawmaker who spoke in a similar vein said: “yes but my fear still hovers over the fact that the majority of our colleagues from the north may move against this move and ‘kill’ it, this is not the first time they have done it.

“In the last Assembly we all saw how they ‘killed’ the move to make spouses of different states to have electoral power to vote and contest it was killed.

“Even when the move will benefit all, the north in most cases speak in one voice which is not really good for growth”.

Former AIG wants slash in politicians’ salaries, increase in security spending

A former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr Felix Ogbaudu, has called for reduction in politicians’ salaries and allowances.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, Ogbaudu said money consequently saved should be used to address security threats like kidnapping and banditry.

He stressed that there was the need to cut excessive spending on a group of Nigerians when national security challenges are as daunting as currently being experienced.

“We must provide adequate security in our schools, for instance.

“It is important to cut down on salaries and allowances of politicians to have enough funds to provide for infrastructure in our schools.

“The amount of money collected by only two senators in a month is enough to provide fencing for schools so that there will be access control,’’ the former AIG said.

Ogbaudu urged governments to prioritise education, stressing that the future of the country would be determined by the type of citizens it groomed.

He said a largely uneducated citizenry would not contribute meaningfully to economic development, particularly in today’s technologically-advanced world.

“Rather than spending millions of Naira to send people on pilgrimages to Israel or Saudi Arabia, spend that money on education, build more schools, secure the schools and make sure no child is found roaming the streets.

“Any child found roaming the streets should be taken to school. Governments should make laws to back this up.

“In the absence of education, it will be difficult to change the mind-set of people,’’ he stressed.

Ogbaudu, currently a security consultant, expressed concern that most sectors of Nigeria’s economy, including education and agriculture were suffering greatly because of security challenges.

“Today we have insecurity in so many dimensions. People abduct school children, travellers and all of that.

“We have never ever as a country prioritised security and prioritisation of security is paramount.

“Prioritising security means increasing the strength and number of manpower who must be well-trained and well-motivated,’’ he said.

Ogbaudu called for concerted effort to ensure that Nigeria remained the giant of Africa and that it took its rightful place in the comity of nations.

BREAKING: Tinubu drops message on security situation in Nigeria

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday commented on the security situation of the country.

In a statement, Tinubu expressed anger over the terror and cruelty being visited upon the people of Borno, Yobe, Benue, Niger, Imo and other parts of Nigeria.

The statement reads: “Like all decent Nigerians, I am angered and troubled by the terror and cruelty being visited upon the people of Borno, Yobe, Benue, Niger, Imo and other parts of the nation.

“These attacks have caused many to disparage our military and security forces. This we must not do. Valiant men and women serve in our security forces, risking their lives to protect us.

“We stand with them. The government also must continue to encourage the security forces to do their utmost to subdue this threat. The lives of innocent Nigerians and the future progress of the nation may lie in the balance.

“As a people, we must never surrender to the fearful temptation to blame one another. Regardless of region or religion, we must unite against a common foe. Discord will only invite defeat.

“The enemy’s attacks seem to focus on our schools, religious institutions and security forces. They seek to extinguish the light of knowledge and hope by shrouding us in the darkness of fear and brutal ordeal.

“We must not tremble. They will be vanquished. In the end, tolerance, justice and compassion shall win the day”.

Obasanjo: Security situation in Nigeria threatening but we won’t be consumed by it

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed hope that though the nation is in a threatening state of insecurity, it won’t be consumed by the situation.

Obasanjo expressed this optimism in his remarks at the 108th Annual Convention in Session of the Nigerian Baptist Convention held at Baptist International Conference Centre, KM 54 Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Using a short Yoruba anecdote to speak on the state of insecurity in the country, Obasanjo called for continued prayers such that the situation will only be threatening but the nation will survive.

Obasanjo said: “On the situation, we are in the country, I am an incurable optimist about a number of things, particularly about Nigeria.

“The situation in Nigeria threatening but we won’t be consumed by it.

“Keep praying that the situation will only be threatening, but we won’t be overcome by it.”

The convention with the theme: “Moving Forward, Finishing the Race with Joy” also saw Reverend Olasupo Ayokunle hand over the baton of leadership as President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention to Reverend Israel Akanji.

Speaking on the change of baton, Obasanjo charged the Baptist church members to work cooperatively with Reverend Akanji the same way they worked with Reverend Ayokunle.

He, however, prayed for renewed energy for Ayokunle noting that though he was leaving as President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, his service in God’s vineyard and to humanity must continue.

Also present at the Convention included Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Senator Ishaku Abbo representing Adamawa North Senatorial District; representatives of the All African Council of Churches, World Council of Churches, Baptist World Alliance and other religious bodies.

Also speaking on the nation’s security situation, Makinde called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the nation’s leaders towards surmounting its challenges.

The Oyo governor also urged Nigerians to play their role by being wary of happenings around them and report to security agencies and authorities when they notice something untoward.

He praised the Baptist Convention for having an orderly and peaceful transition in its leadership praying that such also be recorded in the nation’s political landscape.

Makinde especially lauded Ayokunle for his ability to speak truth to power, while urging him to continue to render excellence to the cause of Oyo State and Nigeria, at large.

Speaking in the same vein, the Ogun State governor, urged Nigerians to reject violence and pursue peace. He particularly urged both leaders and followers to live with the fear of God for the situation of the nation to be better.

Dapo Abiodun further charged the church to continue to seek God’s face for an end to divisive tendencies in the nation and for the nation to continue on the path of socio-economic development.

He also praised Olasupo Ayokunle for his dynamic leadership of the Christian faithful, being a moral compass and shining example of the Christian fold.

JUST IN: Declare state of emergency on security now, Reps tell Buhari

Worried about the spate of attacks across the country, members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday called on the President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security.

The House held three-hour executive (closed-door) session that lasted three hours on Tuesday, from where the lawmakers unanimously adopted a series of resolutions.

Emerging from the meeting, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, read out the part of the resolution of which the House condemned the attacks on security personnel and formations around the country and sympathized with families of victims.

The House reiterated its commitment to ensuring that country is secured, while announcing its resolve to organize a special security summit and invite the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.); the service chiefs, heads of paramilitary agencies, and NIGCOMSAT.

The House also resolved that “The President should immediately declare emergency on the security sector,” while calling on the judiciary to accelerate the trial of suspected terrorists, bandits, and others criminals.

“The President should as a matter of urgency ensure financial autonomy for local governments,” the lawmakers said while calling on the Federal Government to ensure the protection of national infrastructure across the country.

While asking all security committees to immediately audit arms and ammunition of security agencies within four weeks, the House stated that “the number of personnel in police and military fall far short to effectively secure the country,” calling for immediate recruitment of operatives.

Insecurity worsening, Nigeria is in trouble – Okowa

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa on Friday, lamented that Nigeria is in trouble as a result of the dwindling economy, worsening insecurity and hunger across the nation.

Okowa who made the remarks at the funeral service of late Mrs. Comfort Nwagimeje at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Agbor, told Nigerians to ask God in prayer to change the situation, decrying that “many people are hungry and can no longer feed themselves because they can’t farm the way they used to due to growing insecurity.

“Pray for our nation because we are in trouble times; the country is insecure and our state is not left out because whatever affects the country affects the states.

“We are in trouble times because many people are hungry and can’t feed themselves, but we have hope that God will take control and change things for the better.

“Our economy has dwindled and insecurity is further worsening it; we can no longer farm as we used to but we are hopeful that God is able to turn things around for the nation.”

While condoling the family of Nwagimeje on the demise of their matriarch, he promised that the state government would construct Okwuijen Street, Agbor, in honour of the departed Comfort Nwagimeje.

The Governor said: “I know we have come here to mourn but even in mourning of our dear mother, we still have to give thanks to God because that is the teaching of the Holy Scripture.

“I’m glad that I am in your midst today to celebrate the life and times of Ezinne Comfort Nwagimeje, who was dear to all of us.

“She was very dear to all of us because she was the wife of somebody we hold dear to our heart, Pa John Nwagimeje.

“In all the years I had known them, I saw her as a virtuous woman because as it happens in some instances, many women drag their husbands down.

“But in her case, she supported and assisted our father to attain the prominence he attained in Delta State politics because the fear of Pa Nwagimeje is the beginning of wisdom in Ika South and Ika nation as a whole.

“I am pleased with what has been said about her. It is good to live well, because when you depart what legacies will you leave for your children?

“She has left the warmth in their home that will cause people to respect the husband and I am glad that she impacted on the society while she lived as a true builder of the home.”
