FG has lost grip of security in Nigeria – PANDEF

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has said that the Federal Government has lost grip of security of lives and property in the country following the continued killings and kidnapping across the country by bandits.

PANDEF expressed surprise that government was not moved when it learnt that law abiding citizens were currently paying hoodlums huge sums of money in order to stay alive or have access to their farmlands.

Spokesman of the forum, Mr. Ken Robinson in an interview with The Punch said apart from providing electricity through generators, drilling boreholes to get water, Nigerians were gradually taking the responsibility of securing themselves from armed robbers, kidnappers, ritual killers and fraudsters.

He said, “Communities now contribute to do roads and individuals drill boreholes for themselves. Citizens spend billions of naira to buy generators to provide electricity for themselves.

“Now, Nigeria has been reduced to a situation where citizens are now paying for their safety and security. Surprisingly, Nigerians are not paying to conventional security agencies; they are paying money to bandits, to criminals in order to be safe.

“What can be worse than that? How low does government want the country to go before they do something drastic? Unfortunately, the fact is that security is no longer in the hands of government and the indications are everywhere. The government has lost it as far as security is concerned.”

Be security conscious, CAN tells churches

The Christian Association of Nigeria has urged churches to be security conscious as they celebrate Christmas.

CAN President, Dr Samson Ayokunle, gave the advice in a press statement on Thursday titled, ‘The Power of His Presence, Our Hope of Tomorrow’.

He encouraged Christians not to be discouraged by the adversities experienced in the year 2020.

Ayokunle said, “Christmas is not a myth, not a tradition, not a dream. It is a glorious reality. It is a time of joy. The fact of the cross illuminates Christmas day and hallows it.

“Christmas is also a season to advocate peace in the world that is full of wars, strives, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminalities.

“It is painful that many people are mourning due to the demise of their loved ones as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, terrorism, kidnappings and other criminalities. We should remember that Jesus was also born during the darkest time in Israel’s history. Israel was under the tyrannical rule of the Romans. Yet the Angel announced the birth of Jesus as the glad tidings to the world.

“So, I urge those who are mourning to rejoice in hope that they too are still alive. I pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit for all those who lost their loved ones for one reason or the other.

“May the Lord help our governments to rise up competently and stop the menace of insecurity occasioned by the terrorists, killer herdsmen, bandits and kidnappers in Jesus’ name.

“As we rejoice and celebrate, let us be security conscious and observe the COVID-19 protocols in our places of worship or in any public gathering for our general good.”

#ENDSARS crisis: South West governors, ministers, royal fathers demand review of Nigeria’s security architecture

South-West political leaders and elders, including governors, ministers and royal fathers, have demanded adjustment to the security architecture of the country to adequately address the threats and realities of insecurity in the country, saying there should be more police presence in communities in the region.

The governors, ministers and traditional rulers made the call on Sunday in a 13-point communiqué issued at the end of the crucial parley which took place at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja and signed by Governor of Ondo State and Chairman of South-West Governors’ Forum, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Ooni of Ife, Eniitan Ogunwusi.

The call came aftermath of deliberation to find a way out to address the key issues raised by the #EndSARS protesters, a development which later led to wanton destruction of public and private properties following the hijack of the peaceful protest by hoodlums.

The governors are; Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN (Ondo), Engnr Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Mra Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Mr Dapo Abiodun (Ogun).

The Chief of Staff (COS) to the president, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari led the Federal Government delegation to the parley with the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu and other security chiefs in attendance.

The Ooni of Ife, Ona Ogunwusi, the Alaafin of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111; the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu; the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Sotobi; the Olugbo of Ugboland, Oba Olateru Olagbegi; the Orangun of Oke- Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin; the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ogunoye, among others were in attendance.

Also in attendance were ministers, including Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, Hon Olurunnimbe Mamora, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Olamilekan Adegbite, Mr Niyi Adebayo and Mr Sunday Dare.

The political leaders and royal fathers, however, expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration on the responsiveness to the initial demands of the #EndSARS protesters and for his firm handling of the aftermaths of the protest.

This was just as they demanded a review of reports of past constitutional conferences, including 2014 National Conference and implementation of some of the recommendations especially with reference to security, economy, equal treatment for citizens all over the country.

“The security architecture of the country requires adjustment to adequately address the threats and realities of insecurity in the country. There should be more police presence in communities in the South-West states.

“Review of reports of constitutional conferences including 2014 National Conference and implement some of the recommendations especially with reference to security, economy, equal treatment for citizens all over the country,” the communiqué said.

The communiqué, while observing that there were legitimate concerns contained in the initial #EndSARS movement, but which was later hijacked by those it described as criminals and other elements with ulterior and negative force, said there was a need to undertake preventive actions aimed at prevention of repeat of what happened in the country, declaring that security needed to be strengthened in all states in the country.

“We wish to encourage the Nigeria Police by responding to their needs and appeal to them to do more to protect lives and properties and enhance security all over the country,” the communiqué said.

The governors, ministers and traditional rulers, while calling for specific measures and proposals to repair the damage done to the physical infrastructure and economic assets of the South- West aftermath of the protests, noted that the prolonged closure of the border had caused economic difficulties and should be re-examined to alleviate problems of the people in the border communities as well as in addressing the prices of some essential commodities.

According to them, there is need to review the closure and permit resumption of economic and trading activities, even they also called for prioritisation of “comprehensive programme that addresses youth employment and empowerment” with “closer coordination and complementarity between the states and the Federal Government.”

“In this regard, the curricular of tertiary institutions should be reviewed, with emphasis placed on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship,” they said in the communiqué.

On the issue of fake news, the South-West governors and others expressed worries about its damaging and negative impact, calling on the Federal Government to use the instrumentality of existing laws and those regulations bench-marked from other countries to provide safeguards against its spread.

The communiqué, while noting that the 2015 Cyber Act could also be fully used in this regard, charged the Federal Government to ensure that technology was used effectively for the advancement of the Nigerian Security and not its destruction by working with the technology cum social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, among others.

“The regime of checks and gatekeeping should be fully employed,” it added.

Speaking further, the communiqué demanded that every effort be made to resolve the impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government so that students can return to school in earnest.

“We urge that every effort should be made to resolve the impasse between ASUU and the federal government so that students can return to school in earnest,” the communiqué said.

AmericaDecides2020: Secret Service increases Biden’s security ahead of possible victory

The US Secret Service has increased security around the candidate of the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, with his chances of becoming the next president increasing, the Washington Post reports.

An extra team of agents have been sent to Biden’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware.

Biden is widely expected to be declared winner ahead of incumbent President, Donald Trump.

The Secret Service, an agency under the Department of Homeland Security, is in charge or protecting the White House and senior government officials, visiting high officials, and others.

It had already assigned some agents to protect Biden around early July, after he won the Democratic Party’s presidential primaries.

As a former vice president, Biden could have requested Secret Service protection before then, but reportedly did not.

If Biden becomes president-elect, Secret Service protection is expected to ramp up to a higher level.

Unknown assassins kill Obiano’s aide on security, Azubuike Ekwegbalu

The Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Willie Obiano on Security, Azubuike Ekwegbalu, was on Sunday stabbed to death by unknown all assailants.

He was said to have been stabbed to death with a kitchen knife.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at his residence at the Commissioners’ Quarters, Awka, a high brow area for government officials.

Reacting to the incident, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Don Adinuba said the Anambra State Government is working with the security agencies to apprehend the culprits.

Adina said “The Anambra State Government working with the security agencies will do everything in its power to apprehend those responsible for Mr. Ekwegbalu’s death, as we have successfully done over the years in similar deaths. The Government assures all Anambra people, once again, that it will stop at nothing to make the state remain the safest and most peaceful state in Nigeria.

An eyewitness said the late Ekwegbalu, who hails from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of the state, was a close relation to the wife of the governor.

“He was murdered by unknown men last night at the commissioners’ quarters, Awka. This is barbaric. May his soul rest in peace.

“Security operatives must do all that is possible to bring the killers to justice,” the source said.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Spokesman of the Police Command in the state, SP Haruna Mohammed, said one suspect, who was seen in the premises had been arrested.

“On Aug. 9, 2020 at about 1:30a.m., there was a report of alleged murder of one Azuibuike Ekwegbalu, aged 43 years, native of Ogbunike in Oyi LGA but resident at the Commissioners quarters Awka.

Mohammed said a careful observation on the deceased body revealed stab wounds while a blood stained Kitchen knife was also recovered as exhibit at the scene.

  • NIREC calls for effective security for Nigerian citizens

NIREC calls for effective security for Nigerian citizens

The Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) under the leadership of the Co-Chairmen, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto; President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Rev. Dr. Sampson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention; President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is constrained to call on the government to provide security for the Nigerian citizens. NIREC has always condemned the terrorists’ attacks on innocent citizens in the North Eastern part of Nigeria and the various criminal activities in the various parts of the country.

NIREC is worried that the threats and killings keep spreading. We condemn the carnage on human life especially the recent killings of 76 people in Sabon Birni Local Government of Sokoto State; RuwanTofa Dansadua district in Zamfara State; ZagonKataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State; Bethel Baptist Church Aguda-Dauruwan Kogi State and the attack on the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum at Baga. We condemn absolutely, the political thuggery that threatens human life and peaceful coexistence.

During his traditional Sallah homage to the Governor of Borno State, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai ElKanemi cried out: “My people in Borno are no longer safe.” Consequently, Maiduguri, in particular should not be allowed to be run over by the insurgents who have been throwing mortals there, killing people. These show how serious the State of insecurity is in the nation. These situations and the likes are of grave concern to NIREC. The unabated carnages leave the citizens in a state of complete despair as economic activities are almost paralyzed.

NIREC is therefore constrained once again to call on the Government at all levels to take security as a top priority for every Nigerian. The Government at all levels must double up their efforts of securing the lives and property of the citizens. The security Agents must fish out the criminals to face justice. The security Agents must mop up the arms and ammunitions in the hands of criminals. The government must ensure a complete stop to the proliferation of all forms of weapons that criminals use to destroy life and property.

  • Security Challenge: The new gold in town for fake activists”

Security Challenge: The new gold in town for fake activists”

    By Kabiru Ibrahim Dallah

There is no doubt that Africa and indeed West Africa, in particular, has witnessed a massive rise in insecurity challenges post-Gaddafi era in Libya.

Several reports by reputable media organizations have linked the proliferation of small arms and ammunitions plus the rise in terrorist activities in the Sahel of Africa to the collapse of Libya.

Most of the arms and fighters used in the fights against Gaddafi and subsequent battles for the control of Libya have found their way into several neighbouring countries.

This has caused great destabilization in these countries. Mali comes in readily as an example of the effect of the collapse of Libya. Many countries including Nigeria have had to battle the resultant effect of that event in history.

Nigeria has had its fair share of this international dimension of the insecurity challenge. The hitherto local terrorist organization have been bolstered and supported by former Libya fighters who trooped into the country in droves, alongside and with their arms and ammunitions.

The entire essence of the above narration is to acknowledge that the pervasive security challenge being experienced is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, definitely not!

The only difference, however, is that from Maiduguri to Otuoke, from Badagry to Kaura Namoda security is a big deal to politicians for several reasons. For some, it is the genuine desire to see lives and properties secured. Others, meanwhile, it is a tool for propaganda against opponents. Whereas some are just after the big financial war chest expenditure available in the battle against insecurity.

Insecurity in this part of the world has now been considered big business. That is why I took the time to explain earlier some of the real intrigues and international dimensions to this serious challenge of insecurity. Despite how real and serious the task of securing lives is, many people here still see it as a means of making money and enriching their cronies.

The many calls by some so-called activist for the sack of the service chiefs have now become big business to them. Many of these characters are cashing out daily from this call.

This brings to mind a Sahara Reports report on the 15th of March 2013 where one Samuel Chinedu accused Ikenga Ugochinyere of being behind the registration of a pseudo All Progressive Congress APC then. The plan was was to thwart the registration process of the APC. Ikenga was accused than to have collected a lot of money from some big shots in the PDP for that mission.

Such is the life of some of these “activists”. They predate on critical life issues to make some quick cash. Characters like these are the ones leading the daily call for the removal of service chiefs. Those of us who know Nigeria understands how things work here. Once you see people of such shady character feeling uncomfortable with some process or certain people, it is imperative to take a deeper look and you will find that their reasons for discomfort is most likely not what they complain about but their desire to milk the system to their advantage.

Today we have service chiefs who will not attend political meetings in the night. We have men who are professionals to the core, whose only ambition is to secure the nation. We have service chiefs who would not play ball backed by a president with impeccable character and integrity. This cannot be palatable for the business as usual guys.

They have to now seek their source from those I call the enemy of the state. People that consider the well being of their pocket as more important than the wellbeing of the country.

Some see this insecurity as the new oil. An all-comers affair. They can’t let go quickly of the days where a government official will dole out $2.1billion USD without necessarily following any due process, they probably miss the days when everybody was an arms contractor.

The campaign to remove the non-conformist service chiefs has seen all shades of people with questionable characters being engaged to do the battle. Men with shady characters leading calls for the removal of professionals who have proven their mettle in the discharge of their duties.

Men who have sacrificed all to make sure that we can sleep with both eyes closed. Yet at any slight incidence this “remove service chiefs “ gang will hit the airwaves with their usual rants.

The president who is a matured man understands clearly that everyone is needed at this critical time, he also understands that you don’t change your winning team during the battle. These men have helped stabilize the nation at different critical times. Some of us will not forget in a hurry what the situation was before the appointment of these current set of service chiefs. We won’t forget quickly how terrorist were hoisting flags indiscriminately on our soil, how whole local governments were completely overrun by terrorists.

Those with a better memory will appreciate why Mr president is a bit more cautious and not yielding to the campaigners. Mr President more than many of us and infact more than many of these so-called campaigners is very much abreast with the real facts of the matter. So he takes far more informed decisions than many of us will imagine because he has got the real facts of the matter.

It is time for these shady characters to consider finding another hustle as it appears this may not yield any results. It is important for us to support the service chiefs as they continue to make giant strides in our quest to have every inch of this nation secured.

JUST IN: Buhari holds closed door meeting with Chief of Army Staff

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed door with Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The agenda of the meeting between the President and Buratai was unknown as at the time of filing this report.

However, it was gathered that the Chief of Army Staff would use the opportunity of the meeting to update the president on his recent mission to the battle fields in the North East.

Buratai had in April relocated to the North-East to coordinate the ongoing war against the Boko Haram and the Islamic State West African Province terrorists by the Nigerian troops.

Buratai, who lost his biological mother while battling the Boko Haram insurgents at Sambisa forest, returned to Abuja on Sunday to brief the president on the progress report so far.
