    Security expert donates security equipment to PISE-P

    In support of Peace in the Southeast Project the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sheiks and Bishops Ltd Chief Chikwe Udensi, has donated crime-detecting Software and hardware that will give PISE-P access to the crime data in the South-East zone.

    Chief Udensi made the donation in Abuja in fulfillment of his promise to the team of the project to support the mission of ending the lingering insecurity in the Southeast region.

    Udensi who a is security consultant with the Inter-Pol systems
    said that the security equipment will help in the fight against crime and criminality in the South East, adding that there can be no peace without security.

    “I do agree that Peace in South East is the ultimate “Udo kanma” and just like I promised you last year I will provide two contributions for this project to succeed because my area of specialty is security. “I said I will provide advice and the tools that are very important for this task. The tools will enhance the project both the hardware and the software that will give you access to the necessary data that you require to make this project worth the while.

    “I will also provide some funding because this project will be capital intensive as it involves moving around. You’re not the one going to fund it. My prayers are that God will empower you people spiritually and physically for this venture to be successful.

    Udensi lauded the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, and his fellow lawmakers for envisioning the project advocating that peace in the Southeast is good for all and sundry.

    Udensi had in December 2023 thrown his weight behind the project when the Chairman, Media and Publicity PISE – P, Mary Ikoku, paid him a courtesy visit in his Arochukwu County in December last year.

    He commended Ikoku for associating with the PISE – P project, pointing out that the task would be quite beneficial to society.

    “If you look into the system today most people who will want to handle any project must consider what is in there for them and not the ones that are intended to bring value without personal gains, I want to thank you a whole lot and say congratulations for honour to be associated with PISE-P”, he said.

    Responding, PISE-P Project coordinator, Mr Ogbonna Ukuku lauded Udensi for his support towards the project. He promised that the Deputy Speaker would personally visit Udensi to thank him for his kind gesture.

    Also speaking, the Chairman of Media and Publicity for PISE-P Mary Ikoku praised Udensi for donating the security gadgets to the peace initiative explaining that the equipment received are Interpol digitally synthesized data Storage unit. The gadgets, she said, will assist in addressing the core of the very essence of what PISE-P is trying to achieve which is to ensure that there is peace and security in the region.

    PISE – P is a strategic platform for restoration of peace in the South East region. Led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and supported by members of the Southeast Caucus of the 10th National Assembly. The project was unveiled by President Bola Amend Tinubu in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, on December 29, 2023.

    Senate invites Service Chiefs over security challenge

    The Senate has invited Service Chiefs for an interaction over increasing security challenge in the country.

    This followed the adoption of a motion by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamideleat plenary after a closed-door session.
    Presenting the motion, Bamidele said that the motion was sponsored by the entire 109 senators.

    The motion was titled: “Motion on Spate of Insecurity in Nigeria”.

    Bamidele noted with sadness, the rising spate of killings, kidnappings, banditry and other criminal activities in the nation.

    “Senate further notes the recent killings in Agata local government area of Benue, which led to lost of lives including security personnel and wanting destruction of property.

    “As well as the brutal killings of eleven residents of Logo local government area of Benue.

    “Senate equally notes the various kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where victims have been killed after collecting ransom.”

    Opeyemi said the several cases of kidnappings all over the country where huge ransom had been paid and several of the victims still got killed.

    “The recent killings of two traditional rulers in Ekiti state and the abduction of primary school pupils in Ekiti had further aggravated the level of insecurity in the country.

    “There was also the unfortunate bomb explosion at Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo where no less than five lives were lost and several residential houses, schools, hotels and religious centres were destroyed.

    “The Senate equally notes the killing of several residents of Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau.”

    In his remarks, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio said that the Senate would after the meeting with the security chiefs, discuss the outcome with President Bola Tinubu.

    “After the interactive session with the security chiefs, which we agreed that it should be next week, we would also fix a time to discuss the outcome with Mr President.

    “We have a responsibility to collaborate with the executive and contribute our ideas to ensure that our constituents and ourselves, including our children can sleep with their two eyes closed.

    “Security is everybody’s business and without security, we cannot have progress.”

    Akpabio said that the Senate was very determined to make laws and pass resolutions aimed at ensuring rapid progress of the country and the immediate improvement of the Nigerian economy.

    “This will not be possible without a secured nation. We will take this up with Mr President after interaction with security chiefs,” he said.

    Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned till Feb. 6 to allow the senators participate in the forthcoming bye-elections.

    Judgement day: Security beefed up around Supreme Court ahead of Kano, 6 other Governorship disputes

    Heavy security has been beefed around the Supreme Court of Nigeria Complex in the three arms zones of Abuja ahead of the for judgment in the Kano State governorship election appeal.

    The apex court will also deliver judgment in Lagos, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi and Cross River governorship elections.
    The court begins sitting by 9a.m.

    The Judgments in the Kano and Plateau appeals are the most anticipated, because the lower courts had sacked the incumbent governors.

    Security operatives from regular and plain-clothed police units have been deployed to the Court’s main entrance to block unauthorised movements of human and vehicles into the complex premises.

    Though only lawyers and parties involved in the matter were permitted, hundreds of supporters of the parties could be seen trying to gain access to the premises.

    Journalists were also having difficulty finding their way into the court premises.

    Kano state governor, AbbaYusuf, and his party NNPP, had filed an appeal against the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed his sacking as earlier pronounced by the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

    The tribunal had sacked Yusuf and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his certificate of return and instead issue same to to Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

    However, not satisfied with the Tribunal judgment, Yusuf had approached the Appeal Court. But the appellate court had while affirming his sack, further held that the governor was not a member of the party as of the time of the election and could not have been said to have been properly sponsored for the election.

    For Plateau, Gov. Caleb Mutfwang’s election was upheld by the Plateau State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos but the appeal court overturned his victory and declared Nentawe Goshwe of the APC the winner of the election.

    The court ruled that the failure of the PDP to comply with the order of the Plateau State High Court in Jos directing it to conduct valid ward, local governments, and state congresses before nominating its candidates for the various elective posts was a breach of the law.

    The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it has concluded plans to review the security architecture in the federal capital, Abuja.

    The Director, Department of Security Service, FCTA, Mr Adamu Gwary, stated this during end-of-year media briefing in Abuja on Sunday.

    Gwary said that plans had also reached advanced stages to revive the G-7 security initiative and expand its number of security informants to include artisans and farmers among others.

    He explained that the use of informants and vigilante groups for information and intelligence gathering, were part of community policing of the FCT Administration.

    This, according to him, will ensure that the capital city remains safe and secured.

    The director added that the FCTA have banned begging and hawking within the secretariat as part of efforts to ensure security.

    He also said that the FCTA has concluded plans to float an effective transportation system to address the menace of one chance operators in the capital city.

    “We are working assiduously behind the scenes to maintain security in the nation’s capital, including keeping peace between herders and farmers.

    “We are also working with relevant agencies in preventing vandalisation of public utilities,” he said.

    He said the FCT Administration has completed the installation of CCTV cameras around its secretariat in phase I of the programme, adding that the phase II would involve installation in strategic areas of the city.

    This, according to him, will enable security agencies to monitor, arrest and prosecute criminals.

    He called on residents to be security conscious and report any suspicious happenings to nearby Police stations.

    Gwary equally charged tradition leaders to adhere to the code of conduct guiding the traditional institutions, disclosing that a traditional chief was arrested for his involvement in kidnapping.

    He added that the chief has been stripped of his title and handed over for prosecution.

    He decried the weak legal structures in the FCT, which he said was negatively affecting adjudication and punishment of lawbreakers and criminals.

    BREAKING: Reps enter closed door with Service Chiefs

    Tuesday’s briefing of Service Chiefs in the green chambers of the National Assembly (NASS) has entered an executive session behind closed doors with members of the House of Representatives.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports before the closed door session, the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) took turns to outline the various efforts being made to address issues concerning security in the country.

    Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas had said issues that are not palatable for public consumption would be addressed during the closed door session.

    Earlier, IGP Kayode Egbetokun had disclosed that some challenges besetting the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) include poor logistics, insufficient patrol vehicles, inadequate training, and poor welfare of personnel.

    On his part, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla requested for enhanced surveillance to cover the backwaters, creeks, and other areas behind the coastline of the Niger Delta region of the country.

    Ogalla stressed if this is done, oil theft, pipeline vandalisation, and illegal refining will be monitored 24 hours consistently and the issues resolved to the barest minimum.

    TNG reports Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu had described the briefing as a friendly dialogue aimed at bringing Nigerians up to speed on the current efforts of the security apparatus to keep the country safe in these trying  times of security challenges.

    Kalu stated that the House, which is an equal arm of government, has the power to call the Service Chiefs to come and brief Nigerians on the high level engagement on security matters.

    BREAKING: Service Chiefs bend, finally honour Reps invitation

    After failing to honour an invitation of the House of Representatives last week, Service Chiefs on Tuesday appeared in the lower chamber of the National Assembly (NASS) for a debate on security challenges in the country.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls the House of Representatives had summoned the nation’s Service Chiefs to shed light on the activities of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

    However, the Service Chiefs sent representatives, who were turned back by the House of Representatives, insisting that the chiefs must appear before it on November 21 as summoned.

    As of the time of filing this report, a sectoral debate on the issues of national importance, bothering on security is currently holding with the service chiefs at the green chamber.

    Present are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, and Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar.

    Also present are Chief of the Naval Staff is Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

    Kogi guber: No report of security breach, poll peaceful – DIG Ops.

    Mr Habu Sani, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of security in the Kogi Governorship Election, says the election so far, is peaceful as no security breach has been reported.

    The DIG made the disclosure to NAN in Lokoja on Saturday via a telephone interview.

    He said that from all indications,  the electorate and political actors in the poll were behaving well.

    “As it’s now, there’s no report of breach of security from any part of Kogi.

    “We thank God that what we have been praying for is indeed manifesting to show a sharp deviation from past experiences in Kogi.

    “We urge residents to maintain this peace even after the election so that Kogi can continue to experience the desired growth and development as a state, ” he said.

    According to him, his officers and men alongside other security agencies are doing their best to ensure that the election remains peaceful till the end.

    The DIG commended security operatives for displaying high level of professionalism in maintaining peace during the election.

    Heavy security as Ogun Governorship Tribunal delivers judgement

    Security personnel have been stationed at strategic places in Abeokuta as the Ogun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivers its judgement.

    According to reports, there was heavy security presence as early as 6:00 am on Saturday at the Isabo Magistrate Court, Abeokuta.

    The security operatives comprising the Police, Department of State Security Service (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Amotekun Corps cordoned roads leading to the court.

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Ladi Adebutu, had filed a petition against the election of Gov. Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as governor of Ogun.

    The three-man panel headed by Justice Hamidu Kunaza is set to deliver judgement on the petition filed by PDP and Adebutu against the victory of Abiodun in the March 18 election.

    Some party loyalists prevented from entering the court premises were seen hanging around the vicinity.

    Coup: Guinea-Bissau president, Embalo tightens personal security

    Umaro Sissoco Embalo the president of Guinea-Bissau has appointed two new officials to protect his security, following the spate of coups d’etat in the region.

    The private security started their job on Monday, September 4.

    The security appointments were made shortly after coups in Niger and Gabon, both carried out by the security officials of the government.

    General Tomas Djassi was named as head of presidential security, while General Horta Inta was appointed as chief of staff for the president on Friday.

    These two positions have long existed in the government’s organisational structure but have not been filled for several decades.

    Both Djassi and Inta were sworn in Monday during a ceremony at the presidential palace, according to an AFP journalist.

    Guinea-Bissau has suffered four military coups since independence in 1974, most recently in 2012.

    Recall that there was an attempt to overthrow Embalo  in February 2022.

    “It’s true that coups d’état carried out by presidential security officers have become fashionable,” the president told reporters on Monday, while assuring that “any suspicious movement will be met with an appropriate response”.

    Before his new appointment, Djassi was the head of the national guard, an elite unit of the army whose intervention helped stall the 2022 coup attempt.

    Inta was head of the central police station in Bissau.

    Last month, Embalo warned that Niger’s coup presented an existential threat to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), saying the deposed Nigerien president Mohamed Bazoum was that country’s only legitimate leader.

    Gov. Obaseki promises safety in Saturday’s LG polls

    The Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, has assured of safe passage and heightened security for citizens during the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) election scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023.

    This announcement was made during a press briefing held after a state Security Council meeting convened at the Government House in Benin City on Thursday.

    Governor Obaseki also reiterated that there will be no restriction of movement and people would be able to move freely within and through the state during the electoral process.

    “The local government election will be held on Saturday, and one unique thing about the election is that movement is not restricted.

    “People will be allowed to go about their normal activities after voting. Movement within the state and commuters going through the state will not be restricted,” Governor Obaseki stated.

    The Governor urged voters to participate en masse in choosing their preferred candidates, while expressing confidence in the readiness and preparedness of all security agencies involved in ensuring a secure electoral process.

    “Enough preparation has been made to secure the people so that they can go to the polling unit, vote, and go home. If they need to come back and wait for the votes to be counted and the election declared, they can also do so, but it must be peaceful,” Governor Obaseki urged.

    The state Commissioner of Police Muhammad Dankwara, also assured the public that security agencies were fully prepared and ready for the local government election.

    Dankwara said that all security agencies were aligned in their commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral exercise.

    “We are prepared for the election, and we are all on the same page with our sister security agencies, and surely the election will be very peaceful,” Dankwara affirmed.

    He added that only eligible voters with proper identification will be allowed at polling units, and agents approved by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission will oversee the voting process.

    The Police Commissioner reassured the public of the police’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, neutrality, and thoroughness in executing their duties before, during, and after the exercise.

    Dankwara also issued a stern warning against the use of dangerous weapons during the local government elections, stressing that no weapons of any kind would be permitted at the voting arena.

    Additionally, individuals or party representatives would not be allowed at polling units with political party logos or any form of political party identification. These measures are intended to maintain order and prevent violence during the election.

    The local government elections are scheduled to take place in 4,519 polling units across 192 wards in the 18 local government areas of Edo State.
