Five years after leaving office: Ex-aides of Amosun appeal to Gov Abiodun to pay severance fee

Ex-aides of the former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, have sent a passionate appeal to the incumbent Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to pay their severance gratuity denied them since they left office in 2019.

Representatives of the former Special Assistants, who served between 2015 and 2019, Gbenga Adekanmbi, Musiliu Oladeinde and
Olusola Balogun, stated in a statement issued in Abeokuta that all efforts to make Abiodun pay the gratuity have failed.

They lamented that this has caused them financial, mental and physical trauma and that the value of their allowance has depreciated heavily.

The former political appointees appealed to the governor to consider them in the N5 billion palliatives recently released by him to cushion the consequences of the current hardship on the residents, staff and retirees.

Their plight, they said, is made worse, as most of them could not return to their places of work, which they had to leave to serve the state, noting that this has grave consequences on the upkeep of their families and their personal well-being.

They wondered why the state government continues to ignore them, despite the formal appeals made in three letters to the governor as well as those sent to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff and the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor.

“We recall the acknowledgment of receipt of our letters and the promise made by the governor to look into our request when he met with our representatives at the Presidential Lodge, Ibara, Abeokuta, on September 1, 2022, ahead of the 2023 elections.

“We know His Excellency as a magnanimous and empathetic leader, who, on assumption of office, not only retained the thousands of workers employed and the Permanent Secretaries promoted in the twilight of the government of his predecessor but also fulfilling his promise to pensioners,” they said.

In one of the letters sent to the governor, dated August 5, 2021, and signed by Soyombo Opeyemi, Olusola Balogun, Lanre Adeagbo and Gbenga Adekanmbi, the former appointees said, “We, the undersigned, representatives of Special Assistants to the Governor who served Ogun State Government between the years 2015 and 2019, earnestly appeal to Your Excellency to pay our Severance Allowance. Many of us resigned our jobs in order to serve our state.

“As the current helmsman, you would have taken cognisance of our plight during the four years of our faithful and selfless service. As we noted in our earlier letter on the subject matter, dated 6th June 2019, we humbly appeal to Your Excellency to kindly offset the SEVERANCE in order to encourage sacrificial service to the good people of Ogun State by public office holders,” they concluded.

Just in: Senator escapes gunmen’s bullets, orderly k!lled

The Senator representing Imo-North senatorial district (Okigwe zone), Senator Patrick Ndubueze has narrowly escaped gunmen’s bullets, but one of his orderlies got killed.

A source close to the senator revealed that the gunmen stormed the senator’s residence during the early hours of Monday, February 12.

The source added that while the senator managed to escape unharmed, one of the policemen assigned to him was fatally shot.

He said: “The news of Senator Patrick Ndubueze being attacked is true. They stormed his residence at Umualumoke and killed a policeman working for him.

“They invaded his house and one of his policemen was gunned down in the process. It could be the same set of hoodlums that also ambushed the Correctional Service in Okigwe and set prisoners free after killing a police inspector and abducting the officer in charge of the centre.

“Okigwe has become a war zone where no one is safe. We are living in total fear. Most of our youths have run away for fear of being killed. Our security agencies are not doing enough to combat crimes in the state. Yet, there are so many of them (security men) in this area,” he lamented.

Senator Patrick Ndubueze is currently serving as an APC senator who won the February 25, 2023, National Assembly elections.

  • Court orders Senator to repay N136m bank debt to AMCON

Court orders Senator to repay N136m bank debt to AMCON

A Federal High Court, Abuja has ordered Sen. Victor Umeh to pay about N136 million to the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) over his unpaid bank loan.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/AMC/12/2022, also ordered Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, to pay the debt along with the accrued interest.

Justice Ekwo, who declared that Umeh was actually indebted to AMCON, issued an order directing the  forfeiture of Umeh’s  5,000,000 units of Skye Bank shares in the records of the Central Securities and Clearing System to AMCON.

The judge also awarded a cost of N2 million in favour of AMCON and against Umeh.

AMCON filed the suit against the lawmaker who is currently the Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora.

While AMCON was the claimant, Umesh was the sole defendant in the case.

AMCON had told the court that Umeh got a loan of N23,250,000.00 from the now defunct Skye Bank in January 2008 “to enable him invest in and purchase shares of a financial institution in Nigeria.”

According to the claimant, the tenor of the credit facility granted the defendant was specifically fixed for 356 days.

“The offer letter contained various other explicit terms and conditions which the defendant accepted by duly executing the memorandum of acceptance.

“The defendant utilised the funds granted to him as credit facility by the bank.

“However, at the expiration of the tenor of the facility, the defendant failed and neglected to liquidate thr credit facility as per the contract,” it said.

AMCON stated that it later acquired the unpaid debt when Skye Bank became unsuccessful in making Umeh to repay.

It said that its suit was to recover the debt which stood at N135, 722, 303.40k as at April 2011.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Ekwo, observed that despite being served with court documents in relation to the case, Umeh failed to file any response or make any effort to enter a defence.

“It is to be noted at this point that the defendant, upon being served, failed to enter a defence is this case.

“It is trite law that the net effect of the failure of a defendant to file pleadings is that the assertions of the claimant in his pleadings stands unchallenged and are deemed admitted and established.

“It is also trite that the effect of a defendant’s failure to call evidence in defence of the claims against him at the trial is that he is presumed to have admitted the case made against him by the claimant,” he said.

The judge added that despite Umeh’s failure to file a defence, the plaintiff was able to prove its case through the evidence it presented.

He held that by the evidence presented by the plaintiff, “the indebtedness of the defendant has been proved.

He said he found that the plaintiff had established its case by a preponderance of evidence as required by law.

“Consequently, judgment is entered per terms as follows:

“A declaration is hereby made that the defendant is indebted to the plaintiff, in the sum of N135,722,303.40 representing the principal debt sum plus all the accrued interest and charges, at the rate of 15 per cent per annum drawn up to 25th January, 2021, being the sum due and outstanding from the defendant to the plaintiff.

“A declaration is hereby made mandating the defendant to pay to the plaintiff the sum of N135,722,303.40 representing the principal debt sum, plus all the accrued interest and charges, at the rate of 15 per cent per annum drawn up to 25th January 2021, in settlement of the debt due and outstanding from the defendant to the plaintiff.

“An order is hereby made mandating the defendant to pay the plaintiff a sum representing 15 per cent of the principal sum, as interest on the judgement sum, from  26th January, 2021, till the date of delivery of judgement.

“An order is hereby made mandating the defendant to pay the plaintiff a sum representing 15 per cent  of the judgement sum as interest on the judgement sum, from the date of delivery of judgement till the date of full and final liquidation of same.

“A declaration is hereby made that the defendant is liable to a total forfeiture and divestment of all his title, rights, interests, benefits, and claims in respect of the 5,000,000 shares of Skye Bank shares in the record of the Central Secures & Cleaning System while the plaintiff is entitied to take over, as beneficial owner, all the title, rights, interests, benefits and claims in respect of same.

“An order of final foreclosure and final forfeiture is hereby made foreclosing and divesting the defendant of his title, rights and interests, in respect of the 5,000,000 units of Skye Bank shares in the records of the Central Securities & Clearing System and vesting same in the plaintiff in furtherance of part liquidation and satisfaction of the outstanding debt obligation of the defendants due to the plaintiff.

“An order is hereby made mandating the defendant to pay to the plaintiff the sum of N2,000,000 00 as costs for filing and pursuing this claim,” the judge declared.

  • Kogi senator faults Ndume, justifies relocation of CBN, FAAN to Lagos

Kogi senator faults Ndume, justifies relocation of CBN, FAAN to Lagos

Sen. Karimi Sunday (APC-Kogi), has justified the relocation of some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from Abuja to Lagos by the Federal Government.

Sunday, who represents Kogi-West at the National Assembly, stated this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He faulted criticism by the Northern Senators Forum and Sen. Ali Ndume(APC-Borno) over the relocation, saying they were uncalled for.

“For example, the headquarters of 96 per cent of all banks in Nigeria are in Lagos, the staff of the Banking and Supervision Department of often travel to Lagos to check their books at the headquarters,” he said.

He added that the relocation would help save cost of running both FAAN and the CBN departments,, adding that, Lagos remained the hub of aviation in Nigeria and for operational efficiency, it was better to have FAAN in Lagos.

“What is important to our people in the North and Nigerians as a whole is how decisions of government will affect their lives positively and put food on their table at cheaper prices.

“They are not bothered by any ethnic sentiments on the relocation of offices of federal ministries and agencies.

The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) had on Monday condemned the relocation

The senators called on the federal government to consider reversal of the relocated departments or ready to face legal actions.

Suleiman Kawu, the spokesperson of NSF, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

  • 2024: Foremost APC aspirant, Senator Osunbor relates how well Esan monarchs received his campaign train

2024: Foremost APC aspirant, Senator Osunbor relates how well Esan monarchs received his campaign train

Frontline APC aspirant for the Edo State gubernatorial election, Professor Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor, on Tuesday met with all Esan traditional rulers at the palace of the Enojie of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Abumere II.

    The event was phenomenal and
remarkable in all its ramifications, leaving all attendees over the moon.

Relating his experience with the press at the end of the colourful event, Professor Osunbor described the meeting as highly encouraging, given the nice things said about him by the traditional rulers, who declared robust support for his aspiration.

He said, “I’ve come to visit the enijie (kings) of Esan Land to wish them a happy new year and to inform them about my governorship aspiration under the platform of my political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and to receive and pray in whatever way possible for me the nomination under the platform of my political party and, of course, thereafter to support me in the general election,” said Osunbor, who, in his usual utmost humility, kneeled down with his lovely wife, Lady Ussieh Osunbor, to receive the blessings of the enijie.

He continued: “I was very well received; I know many of them; we have lived together for a long time. They were all very happy to see me, just as I was happy to see them. They prayed for me, wished me well, and said so many nice things about me. This is very encouraging.

Senator Osunbor is widely revered for being amiable, honest, and respectful—virtues that have made him shoulders above his contemporaries, setting him apart as a role model to the younger generations.

Perhaps his most recurring virtue is humility, seeing life as a learning curve and never taking anyone or relationships for granted.

This he exhibited profoundly while speaking at the August gathering, where he took the enijie down memory lane, highlighting his track record, his reverence for the traditional institutions, and his resolve to keep at it, given a second chance at the plump position he occupied briefly between 2007 and 2008.

Expectedly, the highly erudite legal luminary left the audience awed by his sheer display of humility that has always endeared him to people from all walks of life. He implored the traditional rulers to feel free to invite him any time they think he needs some advice, adding that he doesn’t claim to know it all.

“If there’s any area you feel I need advice in because no one knows it all, I will be happy to be invited and advised. Thanks to everyone for what you did before and what you will still do,” he said amid thunderous applause.

The occasion was made grand by the Okhinabojie Dance of Iruekpen, Ekpoma, which continuously serenaded everyone with their sonorous voices and enthralling dance steps, accentuating the rich cultural heritage of Esan Land. They extolled Senator Osunbor with many songs, notably Ojie ma vae (our king has come).

Senator Osunbor is sanguine about the prospect of securing the ticket of his party and emerging victorious at the polls in September. He exuded this confidence while bidding the Enijie farewell at the end of proceedings.

He said, “I quite appreciate it. I wish all of you a happy and prosperous new year. I pray that before the end of the year, you will have a brand new governor of Edo State. That brand new governor of Edo State will be my humble self and my wife. By the grace of God, we will be here to celebrate the new year in 2025 with our royal highnesses as the governor.”

The kernel of it all is that all Esan traditional rulers have resolved to support Professor Senator Oserheimen Osunbor, the only aspirant they know enough to trust and vouch for.

Senate swears in ex-minister, Lalong as Plateau-South Senator

Former Minister of Labour Employment and Productivity, Simon Lalong on Wednesday at plenary took his oath of office and allegiance.

The administration of Lalong’s oath of allegiance followed his declaration as winner of the Plateau-South Senatorial election by the Appeal Court.

The Clerk of the Senate, Mr Chinedu Akubueze, administered the oath and allegiance on Lalong.

Lalong, who now represents Plateau-South in the senate had challenged and filed a petition challenging the declaration of Sen. Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Senatorial poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’.

INEC had declared Bali of the PDP as the winner of the election, while Lalong came second in the Feb. 25 elections.

But Lalong asked the tribunal to nullify Bali’s election on the grounds that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and, therefore, could not file candidates for the elections.

The tribunal, in a unanimous judgment read by Justice Muhammad Tukur, said the PDP, having no structure, lacked the right to have taken part in the election.

Why I quit the PDP – Sen. Utazi

Sen. Chukwuka Utazi, former Senator representing Enugu-North Senatorial District of Enugu State, says he quit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) because the “ideals that attracted him to the party have receded into oblivion”.

The Senator, who represented the district between 2015 and 2023, submitted his resignation letter to the Chairman of PDP in Nkpologu Ward of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state, Chief Robert Ezeagu, on Sunday.

The letter reads: “It is with reservation that I resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party which I had the privilege of being a foundation member at its inception in 1998.

“The reason being that those ideals that attracted me to the party have since receded into oblivion leaving me with no option but to leave and find another party that will afford me ample opportunity to operate maximally and contribute to national development.

“I am therefore wishing you all well as you continue to work hard to eke out a living in the best way possible under the present circumstances. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation so far.”

…on governance in Taraba, says Kefas has proven to be a man of immense courage

Asked how would he assess the outcome on the retreat on fiscal policy, the engineer turned politician said:

“So far so good we are getting it it right in the tenth Assembly because the retreat is a big eye opener to us to know all the basic rudiments of public policies with a bias on fiscal policy.

“The kernel of it all is that when we allocate scarce resources we can now adequately do it with the hindsight of the training.

“As far as I am concerned in my individual capacity, the outcome has been satisfactory and will go a long way in repositioning my mindset on certain fiscal policies.

Manu who is also, the deputy chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Loans said, “I have learnt a lot that will further enhance the inner workings of my committee now and in the near future.

Asked to assess governance in Taraba State, Manu said,” the little I can say now is that our Governor has started well particularly in the area of education.

“It’s laudable that he has taken the responsibility of primary education by eradicating school fees.

“This development is highly commendable and I diff my hat for His Excellency for braving the tape in such a short period while in governance.

is a man of immense courage as he has started touching lives immediately he resumed office.

“I have positive vibes about our Governor who is less than six months in office and has displayed rare leadership qualities capable of turning things around for the good of all Taraba citizens including me, he added.
