Qatar 2022: Senegal, Netherlands book second round qualification ticket

Netherlands and Senegal have booked their passage into the second round of the FIFA 2022 World Cup after beating Qatar and Ecuador respectively.

Netherlands had four points prior to the game and only needed a point to book its passage into the second round of the competition.

The Orange boys defeated Qatar 2-0 to cement their place at the top of the group A table.

Cody Gakpo fired home Netherlands first goal in the 26th minute before Frenkie de jong made it two in the 49th minute to secure all three points for the Dutch.

Meanwhile, West African Side Senegal defeated Ecuador by 2-1 with goals from Ismaila Sarr  from the penalty spot and a wonderful volley from  Koulibaly.

The Teranga Lions led at halftime but Ecuador rallied back into the game with an equalizer from Moses Caicedo in the 67th minute.

Senegal was on the brink of being eliminated before Gueye stepped up to the free-kick he won and swung a wonderful delivery into the box. It bounced off Torres’ shoulder and straight to Koulibaly who then fired a volley  past Galindez to put scores at 2-1  for Senegal.

Senegal and Netherlands become the first teams to book their place in the second round of the competition and now await their opponent as the Mundial progresses.

Qatar 2022: Senegal defeats Qatar 3-1 to revive qualification hopes

Senegal recorded Africa’s first win at the Mundial after beating the host nation Qatar by 3-1 in the second group A encounter.

After playing goalless for the most part of the first half, succour came the way of the Teranga Lions  in the 41st minute. Khouckhi miskicked a clearance inside the area, slipped and Dia pounced on a loose ball to tap in Senegal first goal of the game.

Meanwhile both teams charged at eachother to get a goal but luck again smile on the West African side.

In the 51st minute, Diedhiou advances to the near post, escapes his marker and angles a fine header into the opposite top corner for Senegal’s second goal of the encounter.

In the 77th, a lovely ball found  Mohamad on the right and his accurate cross was headed down and firmly to the right of Senegal’s goalie, Mendy and into the right corner for Qatar’s first World Cup goal ever.

There was a smart  interplay on the right leading to a good low cross from Iliman Ndiaye to Dieng inside the box, who turned and drove low and firmly under the keeper for the West African’s third goal inside 88th minute.

After 90 minutes plus additional time, Senegal secures its first win that will boost its chances of qualification to the round of 16 at the mundial.

The result meant Senegal climb to the top of the table pending the outcome of the game between Netherlands and Ecuador.

  • Qatar 2022: Gakpo, Klassen score dying minute goals as Netherlands beat Senegal 2-0

Qatar 2022: Gakpo, Klassen score dying minute goals as Netherlands beat Senegal 2-0

After what seem like a goalless affair in the second group A clash between African champions Senegal and Netherlands, the Oranje boys broke the deadlock in the dying minute of the game.

Senegal had nine players from their Africa Cup of Nations winning squad in their starting line-up.

The Teranga Lions  turned to Diatta to replace injured talisman Mane on the left side of their attack with Boulaye Dia given the striking role.

Frenkie de Jong of Netherlands came the closest  in the first half but the Dutch midfielder couldn’t capitalize on a golden opportunity provided to him by Coady Gapko.

Earlier, the Netherlands named uncapped goalkeeper Andries Noppert in their starting line-up against Senegal who missed the services of their point man Sadio Mane.

However, deadlock was broken in the 84th minute  after a brilliantly timed run sees  Cody Gakpo get in behind the Senegal defense to connect with a De Jong cross and steer a glancing header past the onrushing Edouard Mendy from the edge of the six-yard box.

Just as Senegal pushed up front to get their second, the Dutch open them up on counter. Memphis Depay has the initial shot from the with his left foot from outside the box. Eduoard Mendy parries it away but is unable to clear it far off from Davy Klaassen’s reach, who taps the ball inside an open goal.

Senegal could also be without the services of star player, Cheikou Kouayate after he laid flat on his back in what seems like either a hamstring or knee injury after vying for a high ball.

The 32-year-old is stretchered off the pitch and replaced  Papa Gueye.

  • Qatar 2022: I feel sorry for Sadio Mane – Virgil Van Dijk

Qatar 2022: I feel sorry for Sadio Mane – Virgil Van Dijk

Netherlands and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk has forwarded a message to former teamate Sadio Mane following his injury that ruled him out of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Dijk opined that the world will miss Mane at the World Cup, saying he’s one of the finest defender in the world.

VVD said that Mane is one of the best players in the world, and the World Cup will miss a player of his quality.

He added that  he so  feels terrible for Mane, adding that he is disappointed he cannot play against his friend at the World Cup.

Netherlands will face Senegal in a Group A tie on Monday and Mane will not feature due to an injury.

“I feel terrible for him [Sadio Mane] to miss the World Cup. The tournament deserves the best players in the world, and he’s definitely one of them,” Van Dijk told ESPN.

“He’s also a very good friend of mine, so I’m really disappointed that I cannot play against him.”

He added, “Senegal have enough players who can replace him, but they’re not like him. Mane is in a different category.”

Netherlands are drawn in group A alongside Senegal, Ecuador and host Qatar.

Mane’s injury: Bayern Munich coach reacts over ‘witch doctor’ option for Senegalese treatment

Senegal striker Sadio Mane will undergo medical checks in Munich in 10 days to monitor his recovery from an injury.

It is an injury that can rule him out of the entire FIFA World Cup in Qatar, in spite of his being named in his country’s squad on Friday.

Mane was named in Senegal’s squad for the World Cup starting on Nov. 20 in spite of suffering an injury playing for Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old striker’s decisive penalty kicks won both the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and World Cup qualification for his country this year.

But he suffered an injury to his right fibula in Bayern Munich’s 6-1 win against Werder Bremen.

“I don’t even know what a witch doctor is,” Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said on Friday.

His comment was in response to FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura’s suggestion that compatriot Mane could be treated by ‘witch doctors’ to get him fit in time.

“In 10 days we will do a check on him again to see how his recovery and progress has gone and we will take it from there,” Nagelsmann told a news conference.

“Obviously (Senegal) really want him to play but we have to wait and see how the medical situation is. If he can’t play he can’t play, whether the FA wants him or not.

“These are the types of situations that go beyond just the sporting aspect.”

Senegal face Netherlands on Nov. 21 in their opening Group A match before taking on hosts Qatar and Ecuador.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said earlier on Friday he was confident Mane could recover in time to play at the tournament.

  • Senegal to host 8th AFRIMA

    Senegal to host 8th AFRIMA

The International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Republic of Senegal have unveiled plans for the eighth edition of AFRIMA.

Chinonso Ihekire, Communications Manager, AFRIMA, said in this a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Ihekire said that the eighth AFRIMA would hold from Jan.12 to 15, 2023, in Senegal.

“The government of Senegal has accepted and undertaken to host the eighth edition of AFRIMA.

“The awards ceremony will now be held from Jan. 12 to 15, 2023, in Dakar, Senegal; shifting the previous date up by four weeks as jointly announced by the International Committee of AFRIMA, the AUC and the Republic of Senegal.

“This also means that the voting deadline for the nominees will now be shifted till Jan. 13, 2023, at 23.00 (CAT).

“This will be the first time the main awards ceremony will be held in a francophone country after past editions,” he said.

Angela Martins, Head Culture Division, Social Affairs AUC, said that the African Union was excited to have the awards hold in a francophone region.

“The AUC has been a strong partner and collaborator of the prestigious awards since its first edition in 2014.

“AFRIMA has grown to become the only continental platform that aims to promote and disseminate musical works and immeasurable talent of African Musicians from both young and old generations.

“This prestigious platform gives expression and supports the implementation of the AU policy instruments in the creative economy including the AU Plan of Action on cultural and creative industries.

“Allow me to join the international committee of AFRIMA in expressing gratitude and appreciation to the government of Senegal for accepting to host AFRIMA eighth edition on Jan. 12  to 15, 2023.

“And for making history by being the third AU member state to host the awards,” She said.

She noted that the hosting of AFRIMA by the Republic of Senegal would happen at a time when Senegal would still be the Chairperson of the African Union.

Martins said it was an opportune occasion to close its chairmanship by promoting African rich arts, culture and heritage.

“Senegal is known for its huge investment in the arts, culture and heritage.

“The hosting of the AFRIMA gathering is thus a step in the right direction to bring back the beautiful city of Dakar to the map as one of the capital cities of music in Africa and around the world,” she said.

In his acceptance speech, Senegal’s Minister of Tourism and Air Transport, Mr Alioune Sarr, said: “Now Sénégal is also positioning herself to become the champions of music because we are hosting the eighth AFRIMA.

“We are happy knowing that Sénégal becomes the third country and the first francophone country to host this great event.

“I can tell you that our ministry (tourism) and the Senegalese government will partner and collaborate with you (AFRIMA) for a great success of AFRIMA in Senegal.

“This is because our President, Macky Sall, is not only the president of the African Union but also wishes to position himself as the President of all African lovers of culture which AFRIMA exudes,” he said.

Senegal’s Minister of Culture and Communication, Aliou Sow, said, “I feel honoured to be representing the Minister of Culture, alongside my colleague at this event in preparation for the eighth edition of AFRIMA Awards in Sénégal.

“We are honoured to welcome this huge event to this country for the benefit of the young people in Senegal and the image of the country.

“The eighth AFRIMA in Senegal is officially tagged the Teranga edition which encompasses the good hospitality, warmth, generosity and sharing that is core to Senegalese life,” he said.

Also Mike Dada, AFRIMA’s President and Executive Producer,  said that the values of Senegalese people would be celbrated globally through the AFRIMA platform.

Dada said youths, the central focus of the eighth edition, would be exposed to opportunities in the creative economy and new music business models, monetisation in music, intellectual property rights and licensing.

“They will also be exposed to collaborations with other global African music superstars that will be participating in the eighth AFRIMA in Dakar,” he said.

Matar Diop, AFRIMA’s Country Director in Senegal, said: “I am excited that the International Committee of AFRIMA and the African Union listened to our plea and pitch to bring AFRIMA to Senegal for the benefits of the tourism and music industry in Senegal.

“I thank the President and the government of Republic of Senegal for supporting this project that will change the creative industry and the tourism landscape of Senegal for good.”

As the whole world gears toward the eighth edition of the awards, AFRIMA, African music lovers are encouraged to keep voting intensively for their desired winners, using the voting portal live at www.afrima.org.

Sadio Mane is the 2022 African Player of the Year, emulating his idol El Hadji Diouf as the second Senegalese to win back-to-back awards.

The Senegalese forward, who inspired Senegal to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations title in February as well as guiding the Teranga Lions to this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, beat strong opposition from his countryman Edouard Mendy and former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah.

“I am so excited to win this award. There are so many players that deserved this award, but I have been chosen. I am honoured and I thank everyone for this,” he told CAF Online.

Thursday’s award was Mane’s second, having won in 2019 when the event was hosted and held in Hurghada, Egypt.

The 30-year-old Mane scored 23 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season before moving to Bayern Munich in Germany this summer.

It was a big night for Senegal who also won National Team of the Year and for Aliou Cisse who was named the Coach of the Year. Simba’s Senegalese import Pape Sakho also walked away with the Goal of the Year.

Buhari will not cancel his trip to Senegal – Presidency

In the wake of the suspected Boko Haram terrorists attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, the presidency has said President Muhammadu Buhari will not cancel his trip to Senegal.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the presidency as saying Buhari cancelling his trip to Senegal means the terrorists are successful in calling the shots, something, the presidency said no responsible government in the world will allow.

The presidency made this known in a statement released by Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media & Publicity, Garba Shehu, following the president’s visit to the prison facility.

“The Presidency wishes to use this opportunity to react to mounting criticism of the trip to Dakar, Senegal by the President, and to stress that Governments don’t stop working because nations face terrorist threats. To cancel the trip to Senegal would mean that the terrorists are successful in calling the shots, something that no responsible government in the world will allow,” the statement reads.

During the visit Buhari queried why the intelligence and defence systems around the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje failed to work.
