BREAKING: Serbia threaten to quit Euro 2024

Serbia national football team will quit the ongoing Euro 2024, the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) has threatened organisers of the tournament, Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports FSS to have said Serbia will quit the Euro 2024 if UEFA fails to punish Albania and Croatia for anti-Serb chants made by their fans during their 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

FSS General Secretary, Jovan Surbatovic made the position of the football association known while speaking to Serbian state broadcaster, RTS.

According to FSS, both sets of fans chanted “Kill, kill, kill the Serb” in the second half of the Group B match in Hamburg.

“What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition.

“We are sure they will be punished, because (UEFA) has already responded to our appeal to remove the so-called journalist from Albania from the championship,” Surbatovic.

Recall Serbia and Albania had fined as fans from both countries displayed banners of nationalist maps, external in their opening matches. Serbia were fined £12,250 after fans threw objects during the England match.

TNG reports Serbia are in Group C of the Euro 2024 and began the tournament with a 1-0 defeat by England on Sunday. They are scheduled to play Slovenia this afternoon.

SHOCK!!! Bodies of 18 migrants found lifeless in truck

At least 18 Afghan migrants, including a child, have suffocated in a truck abandoned in Bulgaria, as they were being illegally smuggled to Serbia.

The vehicle was transporting timber and carrying some 52 illegal migrants hidden in a secret compartment, the country’s Interior Ministry said.

The truck was transporting 52 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan

The vehicle was found near the village of Lokorsko, around 12 miles from the Bulgarian capital, Sofia.

Heart-rending pictures show shoes and other belongings from the migrants strewn around the claustrophobic van.

SHOCK!!! Bodies of 18 migrants found lifeless in truck

It is believed to be the deadliest incident to date involving migrants in Bulgaria.

The drivers, suspected to be human traffickers, had fled the scene.

Senior police chief Atanas Ilkov said one of the four people detained had already been sentenced for human trafficking, and charges would be made once there was sufficient evidence.

Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Bulgarian health minister Assen Medzhidiev has said the survivors were in a precarious condition.

He confirmed: “They have suffered from lack of oxygen, their clothes are wet, they are freezing, and obviously haven’t eaten for days.”

Bulgaria is located on a popular route used by migrants from countries in the Middle East to enter the EU.

The Balkan nation is typically a stepping-stone to richer countries in western Europe, used often by elaborate networks of smugglers.

Last year, more than 150,000 people attempted to cross the border with Turkey, nearly five times higher than the previous year.

The country has long struggled to deal with the number of people trying to enter the European Union through its borders.

Bulgaria has also faced accusations it is mistreating people trying to cross the border, with asylum seekers claiming they have been stripped, beaten, and arrested.

SHOCK!!! Bodies of 18 migrants found lifeless in truck

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that this came three years after Maurice Robinson was convicted of manslaughter for the death of 39 Chinese migrants found in a refrigerated lorry in Essex.

The victims, who had arrived at Purfleet from Zeebrugge in Belgium, had been dead for at least 12 hours before the gruesome discovery.

The truck had been abandoned for 4 days

A senior police chief has said that one person has already been sentenced for human trafficking.

Qatar 2022: Cameroon draw Serbia 3-3 in a thrilling encounter

Cameroon today played out an exhilarating 3-3 draw against European nation of Serbia as they both  secure their first point  of the Mundial.

Recall that Cameroon lost its opening game to Switzerland courtesy of Cameroon -born  Breel Embolo’s goal.

However, in the 28th minute, N’Koulou got the first touch for Cameroon before the ball went off a Serbian head and into the path of Castelletto, who tucked it home to give his team the lead.

After scoring first, Cameroon conceded two quick goals in the first half and conceded another early in the second half to put scores at 3-1 in favour of the Europeans.

Pavlovic and Savic scored two late goals in the first half to put scores at 2-1 in favour of the Europeans.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the third for Serbia  in the 58th minute to put scores at 3-1.

Upon introduction in the 68th minute, Vincent Aboubakar, who plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr,  caused absolute chaos to the Serbian defense.

His goal is arguably one of the goals of the tournament so far, and it was his work down the right flank that created Cameroon’s third.

Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the third goal for the Central Africans in the 66th minute to put scores at 3-3.

All efforts by both sides to score again in the game didn’t materialize and it ended 3-3 at the end of regulation time.

The result meant that Cameroon and Serbia have a point each and are placed 3rd and fourth respectively on the table, they will look to secure qualification by winning their last group game.

Switzerland will not drop below the second position on the table  whether they lose or not to Brazil.

Cameroon play Brazil in their next game of the mundial while Serbia will slug it out with Switzerland.

Serbia president praises Djokovic’s ‘great fight’ in Australia

Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, has praised tennis star Novak Djokovic for his “great fight” in the bid to play at the Australia Open in spite of not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

An Australian Federal Court last month decided to cancel the world number one’s visa after days of wrangling over the country’s COVID-19 entry rules.

The situation forced him to miss the Grand Slam tournament and return to Serbia.

“Thank you for the great fight you fought in Australia,” Vucic told Djokovic during a meeting in Belgrade on Thursday.

Vucic, a populist who is bidding for re-election in April, said he spoke with Djokovic as soon as he heard about the problems in Australia and told him to come home.

“And then I saw how … he was ready to fight not only for himself, but for his country,” the Serbia president said.

Djokovic, who previously refused to speak about the events in Australia, told Vucic he was grateful for the support, adding that he would address the public within seven to 10 days.

“You have stood behind me and placed yourself in a compromised political position in international relations, and I am … extremely grateful. I will remember that,” he said.

Djokovic’s treatment has been described as “scandalous” by the government in Belgrade and has soured relations between Serbia and Australia.

  • U.S thrash Serbia to reach Tokyo Olympics women’s basketball final

U.S thrash Serbia to reach Tokyo Olympics women’s basketball final

A relieved U.S had no difficulty in thrashing Serbia 79-59 on Friday to reach the final of women’s basketball event at the Tokyo Games.

The victory helped them to maintain their long unbeaten streak at the Olympics.

The U.S have won eight of nine Olympic gold medals available since 1984 and are unbeaten at the Games since the last of their three losses came in 1992.

They will target a seventh straight gold medal, which would equal the men’s best Olympic streak, in Saturday’s final against Japan after the hosts beat France 87-71.

Serbia never looked like causing an upset and were effectively beaten by the end of a first quarter they trailed by 13 points.

From then the U.S controlled matters and coasted through.

Brittney Griner led them in scoring with 15 points, a tally matched by U.S-born Yvonne Anderson playing for Serbia.

But with no teammate also reaching double figures, Anderson did not have the support offered by U.S players Chelsea Gray and Breanna Stewart as her lonely resistance fell short.

A victory in the final for the U.S would give Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi their fifth gold medals —— the most ever in Olympic basketball.

“I think everybody here wants to win gold for them, for us, for everybody that’s started this streak that got us here,” Griner said.

Japan prevailed over the French with Himawari Akaho top-scoring with 17 points.

France led 22-14 after the first quarter but the hosts stormed back in the next two.

It meant they were able to ease off a little and save some energy in the final quarter with the Americans waiting.

The French will take on Serbia for bronze also on Saturday in Saitama.

The Serbians also finished third in Rio.

  • Serbia, Portugal could have avoided Ronaldo fury – UEFA

Serbia, Portugal could have avoided Ronaldo fury – UEFA

A Cristiano Ronaldo goal not given in a dramatic 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Serbia and Portugal should have stood, UEFA said on Monday.

Europe’s football governing body said the goal would have stood if the two football associations had agreed before the game to use goal-line technology.

Portugal captain Ronaldo was left fuming and got booked for dissent after his stoppage-time effort in Saturday’s Group A 2-2 draw at Serbia was cleared by Stefan Mitrovic.

Mitrovic’s clearance came after the ball had crossed the line, as shown by television replays.

With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in place to review the incident, match officials waved play on.

But a livid Ronaldo left the pitch seconds before the final whistle as he also threw away the captain’s armband while heading towards the tunnel.

“The decision to use goal-line technology for the European Qualifiers lies with the host association for each match,” the European football governing body said.

“If the host association plans to implement goal-line technology, they must also obtain written consent from the visiting association in order for it to be used,” UEFA added.

Match referee Danny Makkelie said on Monday that he had apologised to Portugal coach Fernando Santos and the rest of the team for the mistake.

“All I can say is that I said `sorry’ to the coach and the team about what happened.

“As a refereeing team we always work hard to take the right decisions. When we are in the news for a reason like this, it doesn’t make us happy at all,” he said.

Santos said after the game it was unacceptable not to have VAR at this level of competition.

But UEFA on Sunday said the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to install the system in time for the qualifiers.

“In 2019, UEFA had proposed to (world football governing body) FIFA the implementation of VAR in the current World Cup qualifiers,” it said.

“The impact of the pandemic on operational and logistical capabilities led UEFA to delay the implementation of VAR in the Europa League group phase (to 2021/2022 instead of 2020/2021) as well as to withdraw the proposal to implement VAR in the 2022 European qualifiers.

“VAR was also not in use in the UEFA Nations League group stage in the autumn of 2020 and has therefore to-date never been used in UEFA national team qualifying group stage matches.”

FIFA, which organises the World Cup, said it was informed by UEFA in January that VAR could not be used in qualifiers.

It had said this was due to the “issues and restrictions” caused by the novel coronavirus.

The result left Serbia top of the group on four points from two games, ahead of Portugal on goal difference.

The two teams meet again in the reverse fixture in Portugal on Nov. 14 in the final round of matches

    Ex-Serbian footballer commits suicide

Former Serbian footballer, Miljan Mrdakovic, has died at the age of 38 after reportedly shooting himself in the head.

Daily Mail reports that the retired Partizan Belgrade, Anderlecht and Gent striker took his own life in his rented Belgrade apartment over the weekend after struggling with depression and anxiety.

His girlfriend, Ivana Stanic, while confirming his death, said they had an ideal relationship and everything was great but he had problems and he liked to drink a lot.

She said “I think that, in addition to the problems he had with depression, he also dealt with anxiety and that is the main reason why he did it.

“After the end of his career, he struggled to cope because football meant everything to him.

“He started working as an agent, but it is a job where sometimes you have work and earnings, sometimes you don’t. He was depressed and anxious.

“The day before the suicide he drank a little too much and I felt like something bad could happen.

“I calmed him down, dragged him to bed and we talked all night.

“When we woke up, he started drinking. I froze when I saw a gun next to him.

“ I cried and asked him to put it away and I called his mother to talk to him.

“I asked him to come with me and went to the bathroom to get dressed.

“Every now and then I looked at what he was doing and then suddenly I heard a shot.

“ I ran away from the apartment and called the paramedics.”

His Former club Maccabi Tel Aviv in tribute to him released a statement, stating that they were saddened to hear of his sudden demise.

The statement reads “Maccabi Tel Aviv is saddened to learn of the passing of the club’s former Serbian striker, Miljan Mrdakovic, who died in tragic circumstances on Friday in his native Belgrade, aged 38.

“Mrdakovic played for Maccabi in the 2006-07 season under then-coach Eli Cohen, and as a 24-year-old he made an immediate impression when in the opening round of the season he scored a spectacular goal against Beitar Jerusalem as he beat three defenders in a solo run that began in his own half before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

“That season was his only campaign with Maccabi Tel Aviv in which he scored eight goals and set up four others in 29 appearances.

“After leaving Maccabi he moved to Portugal.

    “He will be dearly missed.”

Mrdakovic played for twenty clubs across 10 countries including Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Isreal.

He also played nine matches with Serbia U21s and three times for Serbia at the 2008 Olympics.

  • Government official dies of COVID-19

    Government official dies of COVID-19

The National coronavirus crisis Task Force on Wednesday confirmed a Serbian Government official, Branislav Blazic, among the five people who died of Covid-19 over the past 24 hours.

Blazic, a State Secretary in the Environment Protection Ministry, and a prominent member of President Aleksandar Vucic’s Conservative Progressive Part, SNS, had contracted the virus during a visit to his hometown Kikinda, one of the epidemic hotspots.

The government had confirmed that he was a patient on March 25, about a week after his visit, and that he had been hospitalised with severe symptoms of the disease.

Doctors and epidemiologists from the task force did not specify whom Blazic might have contacted in the administration.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed coronavirus patients rose by 160 to 1,060, with 28 deaths. The victims, 21 male and seven female, were aged 61.2 on average.

Serbia is enforcing a very restrictive set of measures, prohibiting the elderly from venturing outside their homes and tightly controlling the 5p.m to 5a.m curfew.

The army is also setting up a second mass hospital centre in Belgrade for people who tested positive but did not develop severe symptoms.

Two other large centres became operational in Novi Sad and Nis as part of the government’s effort to relieve regular hospitals and prevent overcrowding and spreading of the disease through the health system.
