  • COVID-19: Players are scared to resume – Aguero

Players are “scared” about the prospect of returning to action amid the coronavirus pandemic, says Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

The Premier League is hoping to resume the season on 8 June, which would require players to be be back in full training by 18 May.

Top-flight clubs will meet on Friday to discuss options for the restart.

“The majority of players are scared because they have children and families,” said 31-year-old Aguero.

Speaking to Argentine TV station El Chiringuito, the Argentina international Aguero added: “I’m scared, but I’m with my girlfriend here and I’m not going to be in contact with other people. I’m locked in my house and the only person I could infect is my girlfriend.

“They’re saying that there are people that have it and don’t have any symptoms but still infect you. That’s why I am here at home. Maybe I have the illness and I don’t even know.”

Aguero is Man City’s biggest idol – Jesus

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has described his battle with Sergio Aguero for a place in starting line-up at Etihad as “thankless”.

He went on to describe the Argentinian as the best player in the English Premier League club’s history.

In spite of having scored 63 goals in 138 matches for Manchester City, the 23-year-old Brazilian has struggled to secure a regular berth in Pep Guardiola’s preferred 11.

The starting line-up has mostly featured Aguero in the No. 9 role.

“He is the biggest idol that has ever played for the club,” Jesus said in an Instagram Live session on Thursday.

“I know I’m not going to be a guaranteed starter. But I believe I’m improving and I’ll continue to improve. I think my greatest quality is my mindset.”

Aguero has scored 254 times in 368 matches for Manchester City, including the stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers in 2012 that clinched their first top flight title in 44 years.

In a wide-ranging conversation with fans, Jesus denied feeling burdened by pressure to perform for Brazil’s national team.

The five-time world champions have not had a prolific central striker since dual World Cup winner Ronaldo ended his international career more than a decade ago.

Jesus, who has scored 18 goals in 39 matches for the Selecao, says the former FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Milan forward was on a different level.

“We’ve had a lot of good strikers but there is no way to compare anyone with Ronaldo,” he said.

“He was the best player I’ve ever seen and I really believe that there won’t be anyone like him again,” the former Palmeiras player added.

  • Aguero sends Man City into FA Cup quarter-finals

Sergio Aguero’s second-half goal proved enough for holders Manchester City to beat second-tier Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, but they made hard work of reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

It looked like a practice game at times for Pep Guardiola’s side at Hillsborough but they struggled to convert their overwhelming superiority into goals.

Nicolas Otamendi and Benjamin Mendy were both denied by the woodwork before Aguero finally made the breakthrough in the 53rd minute courtesy of an error by keeper Joe Wildsmith.

Leicester City beat Birmingham City 1-0 to book their place in the last eight . Ricardo Pereira’s late header sealing a tight Midlands derby.

Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City were playing extra time after their fifth-round tie ended 1-1.

Guardiola speaks on Aguero breaking Premier League record

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed striker Sergio Aguero on becoming the Premier League’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer.

Aguero’s hat-trick helped City maul Aston Villa 6-1 on Sunday afternoon, and took his overall league goals tally to 177, breaking the record held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who scored 175 times.

The hat-trick was Aguero’s 12th in his Premier League career, taking that record outright having previously shared it with Alan Shearer, who remains the competition’s most prolific player with 260 goals.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Guardiola said: “Aguero is a legend and legends rise tonight.

“Thierry Henry is one of the most incredible players to play in this league and he will be proud that Sergio is the guy who breaks his record. He was a legend and Sergio is the same.

“To score this amount of goals means you have done for many years a lot of good things. He’s been consistent for many years and so we are proud of him.

“He is the most incredible person. You cannot achieve this without being a guy who loves to play football.”

  • Aguero breaks Thierry Henry’s Premier League record

Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero, has broken Thierry Henry’s Premier League record for the most goals scored by a foreign player.

Aguero netted a hat-trick on Sunday, as City hammered Aston Villa 6-1.

The Argentina international now has 177 goals in the competition.

The 31-year-old now sits joint-fourth in the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers, behind Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney and record goalscorer Alan Shearer.

Victory for Manchester City means Pep Guardiola’s side have leapfrogged Leicester City into second place.

The champions have also closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to 14 points.

Lamela missed the first three months of the season with injury, but has featured heavily in Mauricio Pochettino’s side since December, scoring twice in their 5-4 win over Leicester on the final day of the season.

Sergio Aguero is included in the squad despite undergoing keyhole surgery on a knee injury sustained in March.

The Manchester City striker, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season, joins a strong attacking line-up including Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi.

Head coach Jorge Sampaoli has also named City defender Nicolas Otamendi, Manchester United’s Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo, West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini and Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori.

  • Man City striker Aguero doubtful for derby clash

Sergio Aguero remains a doubt for Manchester City’s derby against United on Saturday.

The Argentine striker had a fitness test on Friday, having not featured for City since March 4 following a knee injury suffered in training.

“I don’t know right now [whether he will play],” said Guardiola in his pre-match press conference. “We have training on Friday afternoon and will see how his physical condition is.”

Gabriel Jesus has started up front in Aguero’s absence and admitted he produced one of his worst performances in City’s 3-0 Champions League defeat at Liverpool, but Guardiola is backing the Brazilian to respond.

“He is so strong,” said the City boss. “He is 21 years old. It is the first time he played at Anfield, it is the first time he played in a knockout game in the Champions League.

“You have to live those situations to be better players. You always suffer the first time. The next time will be better.

“But I don’t agree with him – he played good. He did what we spoke about [beforehand] and fought a lot.”

Guardiola will clinch his first Premier League title, and City’s third in seven seasons, with victory over their city rivals on Saturday.

“It’s another game,” said the Spaniard. “United defend differently from Liverpool. We try to play the same way as we have all season.

“So far our season has been so good. It’s almost done. It’s a bit like Liverpool – it’s almost done. We are close to being champions.”It’s a coincidence because it’s the derby but it doesn’t matter. We just have to be focused on what we have to do to win the game.”

Victory over United would be a welcome boost to City ahead of Wednesday’s second leg against Liverpool but Guardiola admits the Reds already have one foot in the semi-finals.

“It was a tough result and makes it difficult for us next Tuesday,” he said. “Of course we are going to try, we will have our chance to be in the game and to try and go through.

“I reviewed the Liverpool game and they played like they always play at Anfield. For the last 15 or 20 minutes of the first half, they were much better than us. But the first 25 minutes and the second half, we were so good.

“They are already almost qualified for the semi-finals but we have 90 minutes. The door is almost closed but it is still a little bit open. There is still some space to get in and we’re going to try.”

  • Frank Lampard Reveals Aguero Comes Late toTraining

Frank Lampard has opened up about his brief spell at Manchester City by revealing star man Sergio Aguero would turn up late to training on a regular basis.

The Chelsea legend, who played for City during the 2014-15 season, has said Aguero used to be fined for his poor timekeeping skills but wouldn’t care about the subsequent fine.

Lampard, speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM show alongside John Terry, said when asked who picked up the most fines at Chelsea: ‘At Chelsea I can’t remember but I will jump to Manchester City.

‘Aguero picked up a fair few. He just didn’t care. He was so laid back and would just stroll out to the training pitch like five minutes late.

‘”[The coaches would say] right you’re fined” and he would say “OK, no problem. Wait until the weekend and I’ll score a hat-trick and everyone will be happy”.’

Both Lampard and Terry also opened up on who their favourite managers have been at Chelsea during their respective lengthy spells at the club and they both put Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti’s names forward.

‘Jose’s sessions when he first came to Chelsea were such an eye opener for all of us because he was so forward thinking and it was all the ball but before that it was about running,’ insists Lampard.

‘With Jose it was ball work from the start of the season. I used to love training under Ancelotti as he was such a good people person. He made you feel good every day. They were the two standout managers on that front.’

And Terry added: ‘I would say the same. Mourinho, for the technical sessions and the flow of it. It kind of went one into another and it would kind of progress.

‘It was like an hour of work but you wouldn’t rest in that hour. He does it all and controls everything. He gets his staff to feed the balls in and if one of them puts a dodgy ball in he will go mad. He’ll stop the session and go mad at his staff.

‘He raised the whole thing because of the levels he wants from everyone.’

Terry, despite returning to first team training, will miss Chelsea’s Boxing Day clash with Bournemouth as he focuses on getting back to full fitness.

The Chelsea captain will be joined in the stands by the suspended Diego Costa and N’Golo Kante.
