Seun Kuti in trouble again as police invite him over P&ID Instagram comments, faces Court case

Seun Kuti, a Nigerian musician, singer and the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti has said that he stands by his position regarding statements he made on Instagram about the Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) gas processing contract case.

Speaking at a press conference at the Kalakuta Museum on Wednesday in Ikeja, Seun said it was important for Nigerians to be informed about this case while clarifying his position regarding statements made on his Instagram page about the (P&ID) gas processing contract case involving Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), Principal Partner to BA LAW LLP.

Ayorinde was Nigeria’s Representative in the case.
After five years of intense legal battle, Nigeria emerged victorious on October 23, 2023, in its case against P&ID Limited, which had sought the enforcement of an $11 billion debt in its favour.

On October 31 2023, Seun took to his Instagram page to comment on the case by insinuating that Ayorinde intentionally shared information with P&ID while representing Nigeria in the arbitration proceedings concerning their disputed gas contract.

Ayorinde through his law firm denied allegations made by Seun that its principal partner leaked documents to the P&ID company.

Following this, Seun was slammed with a libel and defamation of character lawsuit by Ayorinde which will come up for hearing in Oyo State on the 25th of January 2024.

Refuting any allegations of committing libel or defamation of character against Ayorinde, Seun said he only read out what the UK court said in their judgment.

According to Seun, “I went through the entire 140 pages, and everything I mentioned came straight from that judgment. But now, Ayorinde, who was Nigeria’s rep in the case, is dragging me to court, saying I defamed him. He even went to the police about it.”

Seun Kuti further stated, “I am surprised that despite the result of this case. No one is talking about it in Nigeria, not even a comment from the Nigerian Bar Association.

“In England, the case has had a serious effect on their arbitration system; from their tertiary institutions to their law institutions, the case is being analyzed to reform their system of arbitration.

At the press conference, Seun Kuti reiterated his earlier statements, expressing his unwavering dedication to the principles of transparency and justice.

“I called the press to carry them along and be with me as the eyes and ears of the Nigerian people. I didn’t call the press to be on my side but to monitor this issue to the end, to educate Nigerians to open their eyes”, he added.

Seun mentioned that he has been summoned by the Nigerian Police at 11 am on January 4, 2024, and he will be there physically unwavering.

“I mean who wants to create this? If someone actually created this, are we supposed to be giving the person credit?

Seun Kuti urges FG to legalize Marijuana

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has urged the Nigerian government to consider legalising marijuana, saying no one has been able to prove that marijuana use causes any disease.

According to him, Nigeria has lost its unique strain of marijuana because of the ban on it in the country.

He added that many countries include Israel, which is regarded by Nigerian Christians as “Holy Land” legalised marijuana.

Kuti made his position known on Marijuana on his verified instagram page on Wednesday.

“Nobody can show me any scientific evidence that links marijuana use to any disease.

“Africa used to have the best marijuana in the world but we’ve lost that strain of marijuana that they use to grow in Obiarukwu forest in Asaba and Sapele in the Delta region. We’ve lost it because she didn’t encourage the cultivation.

“Now, the West have the best marijuana. Germany is going to legalise it very soon. France, Britain and America are talking about it too. It’s already legalised in Canada.

“Has Nigeria government independently carried out any research on marijuana use? Even in Israel, the land of your ‘lord’, the ‘holy land’, marijuana is legal. In fact, Israel is at the forefront of medical marijuana research.”

However, the World Health Organisation, WHO, said “cannabis use can exacerbate schizophrenia in affected individuals; epithelial injury of the trachea and major bronchi is caused by long-term cannabis smoking.”

People who use marijuana have an increased risk of heart disease and heart attack, according to a study led by researchers at Stanford Medicine.

Seun said: “I grieved for my dad because he was the closest person to me, and he was the first person I know that died, so for me, it was a really impactful experience losing my dad; it was like losing my best friend, my dad, and a family member, all in one. I really grieved for a long time. I grieved for my dad.”

He went on to say that he was unable to properly grieve for his mother because he was on a music tour at the time of her passing.

In his words: “The one I didn’t grieve was my mom. I had a tour. There was no time to break down.”

“If I’m going to share some of my mental issues on your show, it’s like I think I’m grieving my mom in stages; kind of, I’ve not really had time to really delve into that, but the bad part is past, and I still grieve her from time to time. I don’t have complete closure for my mom like I do for my dad.”

Tinubu was a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which campaigned for Nigeria’s democracy after the military threw out Chief MKO Abiola’s presumed victory in the presidential election of June 12, 1993.

He emphasized that the president, whom he has always referred to as his uncle and with whom he has a close relationship, served as a mentor to him when he was younger.

The singer revealed that he has always respected Tinubu, even though so far, he hasn’t been performing well since he assumed the seat as the president of Nigeria .

    He said:

“My relationship with President Tinubu on a personal level is very robust. I grew up knowing him as an uncle. He was a very good friend of uncle Beko . He was a political mentor to me growing up as a child.

“Many of the ideas that I understand today, it was these men that taught me as a child growing up. Knowing them fighting for democracy in this country with NADECO, even when he went on exile… Wale Soyinka, uncle Beko, Asiwaju, these were the men who fought for our democracy.

During Tinubu’s first term as Governor of Lagos State, I performed at all his rallies. I’ve always been close to him personally. But I don’t have any political relationship with him. And even at that, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. I’ve not been to his house in years except when I need to see him for national issues.

“So, these things that people say are just to tarnish your image. They make it seem like everybody must be paid for what they’re saying. No, no, no. What’s the truth is the truth. And I say it regardless of fear or favour of anybody.”

‘Receive your Buhari award and stop complaining’ – Seun Kuti blasts AY comedian

The youngest son of the Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Seun has knocked comedian Ayo Makun, popularly known as  AY, for explaining why he received the national honour.

Recall that former president Muhammadu Buhari, through the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs on Sunday, listed comedian AY, singer Davido, actor Kunle Afolayan, Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and other celebrities among 337 Nigerians to be conferred with national honours on June 1st 2023.

AY took to his Twitter handle to explain why he didn’t reject the honorary award by the Federal Government, stating that a national honour is the highest recognition anyone could get.

His Tweet reads  “Those of you shaming or asking me to reject ‘A National Honour’ are clearly missing a vital point. Our country is bigger and more important than any president or political party awarding it. National honour is the highest recognition anyone can get for his or her contributions to nation-building.

“Let me reiterate. No be public opinion poll them take dey choose national award na by presidential committee then the president will accept the nomination of certain people. In as much as it’s a national honour, it’s a presidential appointment. Biko, receive your BUHARI award and stop to dey Shalaye.

“This is what I hate about sellouts. Is it that you don’t have a chest, or you can’t do anything with the chest? Resist the URGE to SHALAYE (explain), Don’t try and dress HYPOCRISY as NATIONAL LOYALTY OR PATRIOTISM. With una 2 Homes and 2 Passports,” Seun Kuti said.
