Seun Kuti speaks out on altercation with police officer, welcomes investigation

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has provided an explanation for his recent altercation with a police officer, captured on video, stating that he welcomes the investigation and will cooperate fully.

According to Seun, the officer had allegedly attempted to harm him and his family, and he claims to have evidence supporting his accusations.

While he has accepted the officer’s apology and decided not to press charges, he has urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to hold accountable anyone found to be at fault.

The incident occurred when Seun was filmed assaulting a police officer in uniform, leading to the IGP ordering his arrest.

IGP orders Seun Kuti’s arrest after video captured him assaulting a policeofficer on third mainland bridge on Saturday 13th May, 2023.

In the video, Seun can be seen shoving and slapping the officer, who remained calm throughout the altercation. When a female passenger from Seun’s vehicle attempted to intervene, he instructed her to return to the vehicle, and she complied immediately.

In response to the incident, some Nigerians have criticized Seun for his outburst and called for him to offer an unconditional apology for his actions.

On social media, users expressed their opinions on the matter. @MrFresh_ibk tweeted, “Apologize Seun. You really need to tender a genuine apology, not for the sake of anything but for the sake of history and sanity in this country. We cannot continue to give any hint that this behavior is acceptable in any way if we are advocates of REAL democracy.”

Similarly, @Onuohafayz commented, “If the video wasn’t a skit, then baba, you should be in jail. There is no justification whatsoever for slapping an officer of the law.”

However, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, came to Seun’s defense, suggesting that the altercation may have been politically motivated due to Seun’s affiliation.

Sowore tweeted, “There is nothing wrong if you admit that you want Seun Kuti summarily executed because he did not support Peter Obi for President during the 2023 presidential election.”

Assaulting a law enforcement officer is considered a felony under Nigerian law, punishable by up to three years in prison, as stated in section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

The IGP has ordered a swift and thorough investigation into the incident to determine the underlying causes and prosecute the suspect accordingly.

Baba assured Nigerians that acts of contempt or disdain towards symbols of authority will not be tolerated, and those responsible for such crimes will be brought to justice.

‘Obasanjo was really a CIA stooge’ – Seun Kuti reveals

Seun Kuti, son of Afro-Beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has revealed that former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, was a stooge of Central Intelligence Agency, CIA while serving as Nigeria’s military ruler.

Obasanjo served as a military ruler between 975 and 1979.

Seun Kuti made the revelation in a recent interview.

According to him, the invasion of his late father and afrobeat pioneer, Fela’s Kalakuta abode on the 18th of February 1977 by Nigerian soldiers was influenced by the United States.

He explained that the attack was primarily targeted at his late grandmother, Mrs. Fumilayo Ransome Kuti because of her socialist stance during the cold war.

He said, “I believe also like because 1977 this was in the height of the cold war. And she was Africa’s only surviving leading socialist at that time with any kind of real political power and clout. So, I think the attack was really 30 percent on Fela and 7p percent on her because [Olusegun] Obasanjo was really a CIA stooge. He was really a Jimmy Carter’s boy.

“I think that woman [Fumilayo Ransome Kuti] was really the target because why would you throw a seventeen-something-year-old woman? How could she be resisting that you need to throw a seventeen-something-year-old woman out of the window if you have not been told by some superiors that you have to do that?”.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received an assurance from students of the Lagos State University (LASU) to join him on a peace walk in December.

They spoke on Thursday after the Governor commissioned the newly built students arcade LASU main campus in Ojo.

The LASU students Arcade is the largest Student Union Building in any Nigerian tertiary institution.

Sanwo-Olu, while reacting to the recent findings of the #EndSARS Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up to investigate cases of police brutality in the State as well as the tragic shooting of protesters at the Lekki toll gate on the 20th of October, 2020, had invited key campaigners to join him on a peace walk for some time in December.

But musicians Falz, Seun Kuti and comedian Mr Macaroni rejected the offer for varied reasons.

However, the LASU student union president, Comrade Oladipupo Badmus announced that all students of the State- owned tertiary institution have resolved to walk with the Governor for peace and prosperity of the State.

Badmus, who led hundreds of students to welcome the Governor to the institution with Speaker of the Students Union Representatives, Rt. Hon. Mustapha Adejuwon, to welcome Babajide, described him as a youth-centric Governor.

They commended the Governor’s giant strides in Lagos State, especially in the education sector.

Governor Sanwo-Olu donated two big buses to the Students Union as well as other gadgets and equipment for students’ use.
