  • Sex-for-roles still order of the day in Nollywood- Charity Nnaji

Sex-for-roles still order of the day in Nollywood- Charity Nnaji

Outspoken actress, Charity Nnaji got many talking during the week when she stated that “being a female celebrity is more like advanced prostitution”. Many condemned her for the unusual comment.

Nnaji has however insisted that it is the order of the day in Nollywood.

According to her: “It is the order of the day in Nollywood and they (filmmakers) have even upgraded. Sometimes, they would promise one a role, have sex with one, collect one’s money, and then give one the script of a movie that has already been shot. It is that bad in Nollywood. Young girls who are desperate to be famous are usually taken advantage of”, she told Punch.

Speaking further, Nnaji said her instagram post was triggered by her findings on the scandal between another actress, Tonto Dikeh, and her ex-lover, Prince Kpokpogiri.

She said, “What actually triggered the post was the voice note I listened to on my colleague, Tonto Dike’s Instagram page. The person she was having the conversation with, Merit, is a close friend and I called the person to find out what led to the voice note. I found out that almost all the girls mentioned in the voice note had slept with Prince Kpokpogri. Yet, those are the same people that pretend a lot. They claim to be building careers but are actually into ‘runs’ (prostitution) behind closed doors. After listening to that voice note and getting more information from Merit, it dawned on me that this (being an actress) is more like advanced prostitution.”

“But every one of them, I mean the ladies, if I’ve ever asked you for sex before I gave you any role, please come out and say it under this video. If you’re among those saying such, come forward with your proof, but if you don’t do that, you’ll experience God’s wrath.

“You will prosper, you will be great, but I need to clear this, just come out and say it under this video, anyone that is in that shoe. I just have to come out and say this and clear it because of the young ones that are coming into the industry later, I just have to do this.”

“No be only #sexforgrades ‘dey oo,’ there’s sex for roles in Nollywood, sex for promotion in offices. ‘E dey everywhere. I hope they’ll all be exposed,” he wrote on his twitter handle.

This truth came to bare after 9 months of interviews with current and former students.

The secret investigation took more than a year by BBC, which has been secretly filming the University of Lagos and that of Ghana. In UNILAG, Dr Boniface was caught on camera telling his victim to ”Switch off the light, lock the door and I’ll kiss you for one minute”
Several students had alleged that they have been harassed by Dr Boniface, which made BBC send an undercover journalist to him, posing as a 17 year old secondary school graduate seeking admission, of which he fell like a pack of cards.

  • Okey Bakassi reacts over alleged demand for sex-for-roles

Ace comedian and actor, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, aka Okey Bakassi, has reacted to reports that he demands for sex with actresses in exchange for movie roles.

According to reports, Emeka Ike had granted an interview where he mentioned five filmmakers who were fond of demanding sex for movie roles and Okey Bakassi was mentioned.

However in a chat with Punch, the entertainer noted that he called Emeka Ike to confirm his claims and he denied saying it.

“The reports have been there for a while now; bloggers just went to dig it out. When I saw the news, I called him immediately and he denied it. The truth is that I heard it from people before I read it. Since I confronted the person that was alleged to have said it and he said he didn’t say it, I couldn’t hold anything against him. I guess my mistake at the time was not putting it on record.”

“I cannot remember the version of the article I read, but he was attacking the whole industry in it. Since he mentioned some names, people then attributed the rest of the story to those names. At a time, I spoke to my lawyers to take it up. You cannot substantiate things like that. If it were to be a woman, one could say she was speaking from her experience. Did anyone sleep with him?

If anyone can provide the recording of the interview where Emeka accused me of sleeping with actresses for movie roles, I would take him up on it. You know we live in an era where anyone can pick up anything and turn it into a story,” he said.

  • Mixed reactions trail sex for roles in Nollywood

Mixed reactions trail sex for roles in Nollywood

Some Nollywood stars under the aegis of Nollywood on Thursday took to social media to express their views on the issue of “sex for role’’ menacing the movie industry. Anyone who is familiar with Nollywood knows it is an issue that gets people talking.

The development, they noted, had impeded the good image of Africa’s largest entertainment sector.

Jennifer Anjorin, an upcoming actress, said the game had changed where the talk was no longer all about sex for roles but about money for roles.

“Now, young female movie hopefuls are not the only ones giving something up for movie roles. Men, as well, do it now.

“They have to pay a particular sum of money to get featured in a movie and the bigger the money, the more prominent the role.

“The usual victims are desperate untalented young men and women,’’ she said.

Also, a prominent filmmaker, Chidi Nwokeabia, blamed the actors, saying that their desperation and quest for overnight stardom is what some filmmakers, especially the new-breed capitalise on.

According to him, many of these girls will do anything to become stars overnight and this has led them into the arms of exploitative filmmakers.

“Again, with the lull in the industry, filmmakers, most of whom are jobless, need the money from these desperate girls to survive.

“It is a very bad trend and the earlier we stopped it, the better for our industry and rising actresses,’’ he said.

Nollywood actor, Mike Ezuruonye, attacked new actors in Nollywood who he described as fame seekers rather than craft developers.

He noted that in the midst of this development, upcoming actors are not ready to develop themselves in the craft; rather they are after the fame.

Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, disclosed that the major challenge actor’s faced in the movie industry in Nigeria was bad press.

According to her, the media has not been fair to the make-believe stars because of what they write, which she says members of the media do just to sell their newspapers.

Aigbe-Gentry revealed that some people in Nollywood try to pull down their colleagues because of jealousy.

In her words: “Nigerian journalists have not been fair to us (actors). It’s often very sad when you see untrue, dirty details about you in the newspapers.

“They rubbish our reputation in order to sell their newspapers and its heart breaking. Again, in the industry, you see people beefing you here and there.

“They feel jealous because you are relatively young in the industry and you are getting more roles than them, who are veterans in the field,’’ she said.
