  • LASU Prof. to face disciplinary committee over sex scandal

The Lagos State University on Tuesday said it had issued a query to an Associate Professor in its Department of Economics over the alleged sexual assault of a student, and the case was already before a Joint Action Disciplinary Committee.

Mr Adekoya Martins, the University’s spokesman told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the management of the institution had zero tolerance for such act.

NAN reports that an Associate Professor of Economics in the Lagos State University was allegedly caught two weeks ago sexually assaulting an unidentified female undergraduate of his department.

Martins said the case, already before the disciplinary committee, would thereafter be forwarded to the University Senate for consideration.

Meanwhile, the University Registrar, Mr Olayinka Amuni, had told NAN in an earlier interview that the sanction for such act once established would be dismissal.

“Once we are able to establish that a staff engages in an illegal relationship with any student, the person is dismissed from the system because it is the height of academic irresponsibility.

“We are an institution guided by rules and regulations, and once we have an official report or an allegation of someone indulging in sexual harassment, the first thing we do is to issue query to the person.

“The query is to get information from the person whether indeed that really happened or not.

“We would examine whatever response you give with the evidences before us and if the evidences are not genuine, we won’t push further.

“But if we can find element of truth in what is before us, the matter is sent to disciplinary committee and the sanction for such activities is dismissal,” he said.

Amuni said the university management had continued to encourage its students to confide in them and report any form of harassment from their lecturers or non-academic staff.

NAN reports that the alleged incident in LASU is coming soon after the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, dismissed one of its lecturers, Prof. Richard Akindele, who was allegedly involved in a sex-for-marks scandal.

  • Senate investigates ‘OAU Sex-For-Marks-Scandal’

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, commenced investigation into the alleged sexual harassment case between a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Monica Osagie and a lecturer of the institution, Prof. Richard Akindele.

The investigation is sequel to senate’s resolution on a motion by Sen. Biodun Olujimi (PDP- Ekiti) at plenary entitled: “The Growing Trend of Sexual Harassment in the Higher Institutions of Learning: The Case of Monica Osagie”.

The senate consequently, mandated its Committees on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to carry out a full scale investigation of the case.

Recalled that Osagie had accused Akindele of deliberately failing her for rejecting his alleged sex demands.

Leading debate on the motion, Olujimi lamented the growing culture of sexual harassment in institutions of higher learning across the country.

“It was for this reason that in October 2016; the Senate passed the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill.

The Bill prescribes severe punishment for lecturers and academic staff of universities, who either sexually harass or assault their male or female students.”

She pointed out that the Osagie and Akindele’s case “has further brought home the point, further justifying the specificity and target of the new bill.

“And the need to ensure that this perversion is completely kicked out of our places of learning.

“Though the university authorities have since weighed in on the matter to ensure justice is done, this is another matter that must not be swept under the carpet of expediency, forgetfulness or deliberate abandonment.

“The case deserves greater scrutiny and attention as it signposts how serious we are as a nation to fully and exhaustively eliminate this perversion from our schools.

“This is just one out of the many cases that have come to limelight within the past decade and it shows that the pervasion is spreading across the country with both the male and female gender as victims.

“This is especially in view of the poor prosecution and conviction numbers being turned out,” she said.

The lawmaker, who lamented the reported cases of rape and other sexual violence on daily basis in national dailies, stressed the need for the parliament to bring succour and safety to the victims.

“These acts damage our children in very significant ways and also portray our country in bad light which are alien to both our cultural and religious orientation as a people,” she said.

Contributing, Sen. Olugbenga Ashafa (APC- Lagos) saluted Osagie for her courage in the ongoing investigation of the alleged sexual harassment by the lecturer in ‘a Sex-For-Marks-Scandal’.

He said Osagie’s uncommon bravery at a time many female students had come to accept sexual harassment a norm in the nation’s educational institutions was worthy of commendation.

“This is because a lot of sexual harassments are being swept under the carpet.”

Concluding debate on the motion, the President of the Senate Dr Bukola Saraki stressed the need for the implementation of the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill passed by the upper legislative chamber in 2016.

Saraki, however, urged the committees to ensure painstaking and thorough investigation of the case so that it could serve as the basis for the protection of female students on campuses.

  • Sex-for-mark scandal: Police may be involved in probe – OAU VC

Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), has disclosed that the school management may involve the police to clarify a telephone conversation implicating the institution professor demanding sex from a female student.

Ogunbodede revealed this while speaking to Punch in Osogbo on Sunday.

A yet-to-be identified female student at the university last week released a telephone conversation between her and the professor where the latter was heard demanding five rounds of sex from the student to upgrade her mark from 33 to a pass.

The VC said although the university had not reported the case to the police, it might involve them to get to the root of the matter if investigation ran into a hitch.

He said, “We have a committee that is investigating the matter now and we gave them one week to submit their report. If we run into any hitch, we can use all the resources available to get to where we are going. But once things are running smoothly, we may not need to involve the police.

“But we must first identify those involved and where they are; if we have any problem doing that, then that is when the university will invite the police.

“The committee’s one week will elapse by Wednesday. We will brief you about it. I need to state that we have excellent relationship with the police, the DSS and others.”

Meanwhile, a professor, who is a former colleague of the embattled don, has said that the audio recording may not be strong evidence to nail the lecturer.

The professor, who did not want to be identified, said the female student was a blackmailer seeking to destroy the lecturer because of her “brainlessness and laziness.”

He said, “I have thought again on the audio recording and I want you to examine this: there is no portion in the audio recording where the name of OAU was mentioned.

“This is a major issue and therefore, I am sure that OAU may not own the audio for legal reasons. It will be difficult to address this matter in court when the chips are down.

“The audio is not a brilliant recording because many necessary ingredients that can expose such matters are missing in the audio.”

Sleeping with two women: ‘I’m entitled to a private life’ says Senator Ibrahim Bukar

Former Governor of Yobe State, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim who was caught in a major sex scandal involving two women according to a video obtained by Saharareporters has admitted being in a scandalous video that showed him dressing up in the presence of two women in a room, supposedly after sex.

According to Premium Times, Ibrahim, representing Yobe East Senatorial District, said in his first interview since the scandal broke that he had not committed any official wrongdoing and the video was only made public after attempts to blackmail him failed.

“This is a personal, private matter. What does my having been with a girl have to do with the public?

“You know the normal thing. People ask for unreasonable things, and if you deny them, they try to blackmail you if they have a way,” Ibrahim, a former governor of Yobe State, said Monday afternoon.

In the room, one of the two women in the video held a device that was capturing the activities; while the other strolled about. But none of them was stripped like Ibrahim.

Ibrahim said he couldn’t remember where or when sexual activities took place, but the room appeared like a typical motel accommodation.

The senator said he owed no one an explanation since he was not accused of any crime.

“If they say I raped, that’s a different matter altogether,” he said.

“Is it because I am a public official then I am not supposed to be entitled to private life?”

The senator said he knew when one of the women was filming him, but was told it was only for fun and they also wanted to illuminate the room with a camera.

“They just mentioned it to me as a joke and I took it as nothing really serious,” he said. “This is something that happened between two adults.”

Ibrahim, who signed a controversial Sharia law while in office as governor, nonetheless, said, “I have commenced investigations to find out why it is circulating,” the senator said. “But from all indications, it is a blackmail.”
