APC cautions Oyo govt, raises concerns over debt portfolio

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has expressed concerns over alleged plans by Gov. Seyi Makinde to obtain a fresh loan of N300 billion loan.

A report on Wednesday said that the State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, reconvened during recess on Aug. 16 and Aug. 26 to consider the loan request

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan, the APC said that the development raised questions about transparency and due process in governance.

The APC warned that continuous borrowing may affect the state’s economy and the welfare of its citizens if not carefully managed.

It alleged that the decision was made without the involvement of its four lawmakers in the chamber, who were not fully briefed before approval was given.

Sadare said that the party might mobilise residents to embark on a peaceful protest if what it described as “unabated borrowing” continues without clear justification.

The party said that the latest loan was the third in 2025 alone, following earlier borrowing of N200 billion in March and N110 billion in July.

The APC compared Oyo with Imo State, where Gov. Hope Uzodimma recently increased workers’ minimum wage to N104,000, citing better financial management.

It wondered why, despite significant resources, Oyo citizens had not seen direct improvements in their daily lives since 2019.

The APC further cautioned the Assembly leadership to act responsibly, stressing that excessive debt could burden citizens before and beyond May 2027.

It urged residents to remain calm, assuring that it would continue to raise issues affecting governance in the overall interest of the state.

With the governor’s formal notification and the assembly’s approval, Lawal is expected to assume full responsibilities of the office from August 29 until Makinde resumes on September 29.

  • Oyo: No new projects award from September – Gov Makinde

Oyo: No new projects award from September – Gov Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has disclosed that his administration will not initiate or award new projects as from September.

Makinde stated this on Tuesday at a luncheon to commemorate the Hijrah 1447 held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

The Governor said he would rather commit to completing all ongoing projects before the expiration of his tenure in 2027.

“By the end of September this year, in the next eight weeks; this government will not commit to any major projects again.

“Whatever projects we have already committed to, we will see them through, because we do not want to leave any uncompleted or abandoned projects by the time we are leaving in the next 22 months,” he said.

The Governor also made it known that he had awarded the contract for the reconstruction of Okaka- Igbojaye Road, in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of the state.

The road awarded leads to the Kunle Afolayan Film Production Village in Igbojaye, he said.

Makinde assured the people of Okaka- and Igbojaye that the road would be completed before the end of his tenure

The governor, who underscored the significance and values of Hijrah, encouraged citizens to continue upholding virtues such as self-discipline, perseverance, tolerance, and good deeds.

He appreciated the Muslim community in the state for their prayers and support, which, according to him, had enhanced peace and progress in the state.

The Governor further implored religious and community leaders to continue offering their advice and guidance to his administration until its final day in office.

  • “What do they have to offer?” – Makinde queries antecedents of coalition politicians

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said that the ongoing coalition of some politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections was not a threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Makinde stated this on Friday shortly after the South-West PDP caucus meeting held at the zonal secretariat of the party in Ibadan.

“Who are these people in this coalition? They have been in some political parties before.

“What are their antecedents, and does it mean that every time they move from one party to another they have repented, changed or they have something new to offer the people? Those are the salient questions.

“If the roof of this PDP building here is leaking, as leaders of the party are we going to abandon the building and go elsewhere to take refuge?

“We will stay inside here, fix it and let the people know that we are responsible leaders and that we have the interest of the people at heart.

“That will be my expectation for anybody that have anything against this party,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, a communique issued by the zonal Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the party demanded immediate release of the withheld local governments allocation in Osun.

The party asserted that the withholding of the allocation by the Federal Government was unconstitutional, unwarranted and a violation of the rights and wellbeing of the people of Osun.

It further urged members of the PDP to remain united, steadfast and continue to stand behind its zonal leaders in navigating through all issues at the zonal and national levels.

The caucus reaffirmed that the PDP in South-West is intact and urged all organs and relevant bodies of the party to remain focused.

It charged all members to continue working assiduously towards the successful conduct of the scheduled national convention, to further strengthen and reposition the party for the task ahead.

The caucus commended Gov. Makinde, his Osun counterpart, Sen. Ademola Adeleke and other leaders of the PDP in the zone for their untiring roles in ensuring the stability and growth of the party.

  • Makinde has right to oversee how LG funds are spent – Commissioner

Makinde has right to oversee how LG funds are spent – Commissioner

The constitutional provisions of the Oyo State Local Government Joint Account give Gov. Seyi Makinde the responsibility to oversee the spending of Local Government funds.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Ademola Ojo, stated this in Ibadan on Monday during the inter-ministerial news briefing, organised by the governor’s media unit.

According to Ojo, the constitutional provisions of the joint account saddled the state with the responsibility of overseeing the deployment of resources for projects, duties and responsibilities across councils.

“A lot of people outside don’t really understand the relationship between the state government and the local governments in terms of finances.

“This is a constitutional matter. The 1999 constitution (as amended) already states it.

“The State-Local Government Joint Allocation Committee manages funds from the federation account.

“It is between the state and the local governments, and the state has been saddled with the responsibility of disbursement.

“The governor of the state is always the chairman of that committee. So, he has the responsibility of making decisions on how to manage the allocation coming from the federation account,” Ojo said.

He declared that Makinde had ensured that the councils’ resources were judiciously spent for the benefit of the state’s residents.

He maintained that local government councils had collaborated with the state government to participate in the construction of key projects across the 33 local government areas.

The commissioner refuted claims and misconceptions that councils in the state had not done much.

According to him, the state local governments have built several landmark infrastructure, health and educational facilities in the last two years.

He added that the councils have also been making contributions in the area of education and human capital development by providing full scholarships to students of the state.

The commissioner states that 429 indigent students are sponsored annually in various higher institutions within and outside the state.

“Among the key projects undertaken by councils in the state under the year being reviewed are the rebuilding of the collapsed Olodo Bridge in Egbeda Local Government and the construction of the Farmers’ Market in Akinyele Local Government.

“Others are the construction of the ultramodern Olubadan palace, the ongoing upgrading of 66 Primary Healthcare Centres, the rehabilitation of the 14-kilometre Eruwa-Maya Road and the rehabilitation of the 62-kilometre Igboora-Igangan-Iganna Road,” he said.

Makinde appoints new Deputy Chief of Staff

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Mr Kazim Adeniyi as his new Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS).

This follows the resignation of erstwhile DCOS, Mr Fola Oyekunle, who recently emerged as the PDP candidate for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, slated for Aug. 16.

The appointment was announced in a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Segun Ogunwuyi, in Ibadan on Monday.

Makinde also approved the appointment of Mr Taiwo Salami as the new chairman of the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) Board after its dissolution.

The letter further stated that the governor approved the appointment of Mr Kabiru Salami, a retired police officer, as the Executive Assistant (Security Coordination) to the Governor.

“Makinde has also approved the appointment of Mr Waheed Adeniyi as the new chairman of the Oyo State Waste Management Authority.

The appointments are with immediate effect.

  • Students reject renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic

Students reject renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic

Students of The Polytechnic Ibadan have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to reconsider his decision to rename the institution after the late Dr Omololu Olunloyo.

The students expressed their dissatisfaction in a statement issued by the institution’s Students’ Union Government in Ibadan on Friday.

The statement was jointly signed by the union’s President, Olamide Oladipupo; General Secretary, Tolase Azeez; and the Public Relations Officer, Ridwan Akinade.

“We, the Students’ Union Government of The Polytechnic Ibadan, are writing to express our utmost disapproval and disappointment at the recent decision to rename our institution.

“We strongly believe that this decision is unjustifiable and disregards the rich heritage and history of our beloved school.

“For over 50 years, The Polytechnic Ibadan has been a beacon of academic excellence, producing outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions to society,” it read.

According to the statement, the name, The Polytechnic Ibadan, has been synonymous with quality education and has earned respect and recognition nationwide.

It added that renaming the institution would erase its identity and legacy, causing irreparable harm to its reputation and alumni.

“We urge you to reconsider this decision and allow our school to retain its original name, which reflects its history, values, and mission.

“We are willing to engage in dialogue to find alternative solutions that benefit the institution. We request an immediate reversal of this decision and look forward to a prompt response,” the statement read.

Recall that Gov. Seyi Makinde announced the renaming during Thursday’s commendation service in honour of Olunloyo, the late ex-governor of the state.

Makinde stated that in honour of Olunloyo, he would be renaming the institution, where the deceased had served as its first rector, after him.

  • Mixed reactions trail renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic as alumni calls for review

Mixed reactions trail renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic as alumni calls for review

Mixed reactions have trailed Thursday’s renaming of The Polytechnic Ibadan, with the institution’s alumni largely calling for a review.

The respondents expressed their diverse views in separate interviews in Ibadan, with members of the alumni frowning at the change of name.

Recall that Gov. Seyi Makinde announced the institution’s renaming after the late ex-governor of Oyo State, Dr Omololu Olunloyo, during the deceased’s commendation service in Ibadan.

Mr Yomi Akande, an alumnus and the institute’s Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) leader, told NAN that many other alumni had been expressing dissatisfaction since the announcement.

“As an alumnus of The Polytechnic Ibadan, the name of the institution is a force to reckon with anywhere in the world. So, taking away that name is somehow, because of the prestige that comes with it.

“The governor needed to have considered other factors before making such a pronouncement.

“The name of the late Dr Omololu Olunloyo is good, but what many people are against is the changing of the name, The Polytechnic Ibadan.

“It is not that the change of name will bring new development to the school,” he said.

Another alumnus, Mr Olaoluwa Olabode, told NAN that the renaming would affect both past and current students negatively.

According to him, he doesn’t see the move bringing any improvement to the educational institution, alleging that it was done with a political undertone.

“What benefits would the change of name bring to the school?” Olabode queried.

In his opinion, another alumnus, Mr Sanmi Olatunde, said perhaps the government should have renamed a particular building in the school, instead of the institution’s name.

“This is the only polytechnic we have in Ibadan; it is not right that the name of the institution is changed,” Olatunde said.

Calling for a review, an Ibadan indigene and alumnus, Mr Tayo Olaleye, described the institution as the pride of the ancient city of Ibadan that should not be tampered with.

According to him, it is not acceptable for the name to be changed at will.

Furthermore, Olaleye said the renaming would affect the students in easily securing favour and job opportunities with the alumni.

“This is a prestigious institution whose name has been resounding in many spheres for decades, at home and abroad, so we do not welcome the sudden renaming,” Olaleye said.

Meanwhile, Comrade Tiamiyu Ademola, Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Oyo State Chapter, said the renaming would not affect the institution’s reputation.

According to him, the institution’s reputation will stand provided its management maintains its standard.

He also urged the students not to allow the matter to lead to any form of protest.

However, he noted that the decision could still be reversed with genuine arguments from alumni and other stakeholders of the institution.

“We believe that Gov. Seyi Makinde is a listening governor; with the right approach, I believe the decision can still be reversed,” he said.

However, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Moshood Olaleke, hailed Makinde for honouring Olunloyo with the gesture.

Olaleke said no honour would be too great for Olunloyo, whom he referred to as a great mathematician.

He described the three months Olunloyo spent as the executive governor of the old Oyo State before the military took over as remarkable.

According to him, Olunloyo had already put in place a solid structure for good governance before the coup that terminated his tenure.

He said that Makinde should be commended for recognising the positive contributions of the late technocrat to the state.

Recall that Olunloyo died on April 6, a few days before April 14, when he would have turned 90 years old.
