Eyin ko lokan” wait for your turn in 2031-SGF tells north

“Eyin ko lokan” literally meaning it’s notbyet your turn in Yoruba language was the message the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume passed to his northern brothers to wait till it’s their turn in 2031.

Akume made the statement on Tuesday at an interactive forum in Kaduna, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation. The session brought together a cross-section of political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society representatives and technocrats from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory to evaluate the state of governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking against the backdrop of growing political agitation and speculations ahead of the 2027 general election, the SGF appealed to the northern elite to honour the existing power-sharing understanding, which supports alternating the presidency between the North and South.

“By the design of rotational presidency, the North—my region—will be eligible to seek the presidency in 2031, not in 2027,” Akume declared. “Nigeria will not cease to exist if the South retains power. We need patience to arrive at our turn.”

He recalled the foundation laid by key political figures at the inception of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999, citing the late Chief Solomon Lar, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Abubakar Rimi, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and others as champions of power rotation to foster unity and equity.

“Their vision was clear: to ensure national cohesion and stability, power must rotate. That wisdom paid off. It brought balance, reduced tension, and ensured our country remained united,” Akume said.

He urged the northern political class to remain calm and throw its weight behind President Tinubu’s administration, noting that leadership must be built on trust, equity and continuity, not desperation.

Akume’s remarks come amid speculation that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso—both northern contenders in the 2023 presidential race—may run again in 2027.

The SGF insisted that national interest must take precedence over personal ambition.

“We must walk this path with faith and renewed hope in our shared future. Let us deepen our democracy through understanding, not rivalry,” he added.

The forum, themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Unity,” served as a mid-term review platform for Tinubu’s presidency, which began on May 29, 2023.

Northern forum condemns calls for SGF Akume’s suspension

The Northern Bridge Builders’ Forum (NBBF) has carpeted those calling for the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, from office, over his alleged aide’s fraud.

The forum, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, took a swipe at those it believes to be politically-motivated groups calling for Akume’s suspension over what it described as “completely unfounded allegations.”

The statement, signed by Sen. Joel Ikenya, Convener, and Gowon Emmanuel, its Convener and Secretary, respectively, noted that the alleged fraud did not take place in the SGF’s office.

According to the group, the alleged aide of Akume, who allegedly perpetrated the fraud, is actually neither his aide nor a staff of the SGF’s office.

The forum, which comprises distinguished personalities from diverse fields from across Nigeria’s 19 northern states, said it found the apparently politically-motivated calls worrisome, and urged the public to discountenance it.

According to the group, its diverse membership, irrespective of tribe and religion, underscores the unity, progress and collective visions that bind the North and Nigeria together.

“The forum woke up to notice a flurry of publications by various groups calling for the suspension of Sen. Akume, the SGF, over completely unfounded allegations.

“It is pertinent to note that the alleged fraud did not take place in the SGF’s office, as the alleged perpetrator in question is neither a staff of the SGF’s office nor an aide to Senator Akume.

“Sen. Akume’s decades of public service, marked by transparency and integrity, speaks volumes about his character,” the statement reads in part.

While expressing confidence in Akume’s integrity, the group recalled that he had served without blemish as Benue Governor for eight years, Senator for 12 years, Minister for four years and now SGF.

“He has consistently performed these responsibilities with exceptional integrity and transparency, championing policies benefitting all Nigerians.

“It is on record that throughout the period of his public service, he has never been found wanting on financial misappropriation, or any such related acts by any institution,” it added.

The forum, therefore, urged all Nigerians to disregard the unfounded allegations and baseless calls for Akume’s suspension from office by the groups.

Similarly, Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-politcal-cultural organisation, like the NBBF, also recently denounced the calls for Akume’s suspension and disowned one of the groups claiming to be its faction.

Mr Abagun Omololu, the Organising Secretary of Afenifere, in a statement, described the call as a mischievous and unauthorised communication that was politically-motivated, and repudiated it.

According to him, Afenifere does not have factions, noting that there is only one Afenifere, which is under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

He said the authentic Afenifere leadership had never at any time authorised any of its officers, serving or retired, to issue what he called a prejudicial, defamatory or politically-motivated statement.

“The public is hereby advised to disregard the fraudulent individuals hiding under the name of Afenifere to pursue personal or partisan agendas.

“We are fully aware that certain members of the Labour Party in Yorubaland have continued to masquerade as speaking for Afenifere.

“These political opportunists, whose actions are driven by bitterness and selfish ambition, are hereby, sternly

warned to desist from dragging the revered name of Afenifere into disrepute,” he said.

Omololu further described the attempt to link the SGF to the EFCC investigation involving a private individual, was not only curiously dishonest but a deliberate act of blackmail.

He said it was already a known fact that the said investigation was initiated on the strength of a formal complaint lodged with the EFCC by Akume himself, upon observing some irregularities.

The Afenifere chieftain said that the attempt by faceless groups to twist clear facts into an accusation of complicity was irresponsible, malicious and embarrassing to the Yoruba nation.

“We wish to reiterate that Afenifere stands firmly on the side of due process, justice and rule of law.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should be allowed to conduct its investigations without pressure, coercion or threats of orchestrated protests.

“Afenifere, as a non-partisan and principled socio-political-cultural body, will not be used as a vehicle for any political vendetta,” he further said.

Omololu emphasised that Afenifere would continue to defend the integrity of its name, the unity of Nigeria, and the dignity of Yoruba leadership.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one Andrew Uchi, initially thought to be Akume’s aide, was recently arrested by the EFCC over alleged multi-billion naira bribery and money laundering.

Uchi was accused of acquiring properties in Abuja; Jos, Plateau State; and Makurdi, Gboko, and Tarka Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Additionally, two Bureau de Change operators are under investigation for their alleged involvement in the money laundering scheme linked to him.

The SGF’s office later clarified the issue and distanced itself from Uchi, saying he was neither an aide to Akume, nor its staff member.

The office urged the public not to speculate or draw conclusions as investigations were still ongoing, adding that it appreciated the understanding and support of the public on the issue.

“It is imperative to state categorically that the office’s leadership is not in any way involved in the alleged misconduct.

“It has always maintained a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and integrity.

“We recognise the efforts of the EFCC to ensure that those found culpable are held accountable,” it said in a statement.

SGF denies disowning reappointment of NBRDA D-G

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has dismissed media reports claiming that Sen. George Akume distanced himself from the reappointment of Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha.

Mustapha was recently reappointed as Director-General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), a move falsely linked to controversy involving the SGF.

Mr Segun Imohioson, Director of Information in the SGF’s office, clarified the matter on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing journalists.

He explained that he was misquoted as saying the SGF disassociated himself from Mustapha’s tenure extension, noting that the professor’s initial term ended on Oct. 27, 2024.

Imohioson stated that President Bola Tinubu had approved Mustapha’s reappointment for a final five-year term, effective from Oct. 31, 2024, and that the appointment letter was properly signed by the SGF.

“I want to set the record straight. At no point did I speak to any reporter or pressman about the SGF not being aware of Prof. Mustapha’s appointment,” he said.

He emphasised that such appointments were made solely at the discretion of the President, not the SGF.

“The SGF’s office only processes relevant documents as the Cabinet Secretariat of the Presidency.

“The decision to reappoint rests entirely with the President.

“So, the man has been appointed for a second term. The reappointment runs from Oct. 31, 2024, to 2029,” he added.

Anti-torture law to punish acts committed by public officers in place, says SGF

Nigeria has enacted the anti-torture act to prohibit and punishes acts of torture committed by public officers.

Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba, the Solicitor-General of the Federation made this known at the sensitization and advocacy session for Law Enforcement Agencies, MDAs and relevant stakeholders. on United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The definition of torture under the relevant legal frameworks pertains to acts committed by public officials, particularly Law Enforcement, which inflicts pain or suffering, whether mental or physical on individuals in their custody.

“Therefore, the federal government prioritises initiatives aimed at preventing torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment,’’ she said.

She said the government and stakeholders have the inherent responsibility to support measures aimed at unequivocally rooting out torture in Nigeria, in line with UNCAT and OPCAT.

“We are currently reviewing the Anti-Torture Act and Regulations to expand the definition of torture and improve mechanisms to discourage and eradicate torture in places of detention.

“These places include any deprivation of liberty in Nigeria like the police stations, prisons and other detention facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and any other places where persons are not permitted to leave at their own will.

“It is not enough to punish perpetrators for committing acts of torture, the government also has the responsibility to ensure restitution and rehabilitation of victims of torture’’.

She encouraged participants to work as champions of the federal government’s policy against torture, shun the use of torture against citizens and institute anti-torture measures.

“I want you to demonstrate commitment and dedication towards eliminating torture by collaborating and cooperating to speak with one voice against the perpetrators of torture, and for all who suffer at their hands, at your various institutions.

She said the programme would focus on strategic interaction between stakeholders to address concerns and challenges associated with implementing anti-torture measures in compliance with international obligations.

“This sensitization event was initiated in fulfilment of the mandate of the committee and the federal ministry of justice, as part of measures to eradicate the use of torture by public officials,’’ she stressed.

Labour Party petitions SGF over office vandalism

The Labour Party (LP) has petitioned the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) over Wednesday’s vandalism of its offices  by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Mr Obiora Ifoh, the LP National Publicity Secretary (LP) said this in the petition, a copy of which was made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

“It has become unavoidably necessary to request for your urgent intervention, being the Regulatory Agency for trade unions including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

“The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has over the years engaged in a war of attrition with our party.

“It came to a head and unbearable when the NLC under the leadership of Comrade Joe Ajeoro directed the picketing of our party’s National Headquarters and our chapter offices across the country.

“The unwarranted attack in our office resulted in the destruction of several properties,” Ifoh said.

He added:“The NLC claims to be owners of the party and therefore wants to impose the leadership of the party, exerts overwhelming control to achieve a political end.

“It should be noted that Section 221 of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) prohibits any association from contributing to the funds of any political party.

“It is a criminal offence under section 15 of the Trade Union Act to use Trade Unions Funds whether directly or indirectly to fund a political party.

“Similarly, the NLC has no right to picket an organization where there is no trade dispute, The LP has no staff who are members of the NLC. The actions of the NLC is a clear violation of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, the Trade Union Act and other relevant laws.”

“It is of importance to further draw your attention to the fact that it is only members who are financially up to date with the party, who have rights and obligations to in the party (See Article 9(3)(i) and (iii) of our constitution).

“NLC members are not card-carrying members of LP. The party cannot be owned by any association, membership of the party is on individual basis.

“The LP Constitution says the party is open to all Nigerians who accept its ideology, programs and the constitution, irrespective of their religion, ethnic, gender, social and economic status.

“However, the organs of the party as decided by the members assume leadership of the party. How this is achieved is well spelt out in the constitution.

“As lawful citizens we didn’t want to confront them in an uncivilized manner in order to avoid breakdown of law and order. We had the option of also mobilizing party faithfuls to confront them.

“Doing that at this point where the harsh economic climate is having its toll on the Nigerian people will result to anarchy.

“Hence, the urgent need to call the NLC and its leadership led by Ajaero to order, educate them on the limit of their power, condemn their rascality, abuse of office and discipline them as appropriate”.

SGF Akume raises alarm of fake appointments

Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has warned against the use of his office to issue fake appointments to members of the public.

Akume gave the warning in a statement on Sunday by Mr Segun Imohiosen, Head of Information, Office of the SGF, in Abuja.

He said that the warning was because of the purported fake appointments emanating from the SGF office by unscrupulous elements to swindle unsuspecting individuals.

Akume debunked the information circulating on the social media, emails, text messages, and other outlets luring members of the public to submit their Curriculum Vitae at a fee, to a non-existing desk in his office.

“The culprit has been using the name of the former Director Information, Willie Bassey, and these fraudulent contacts; Aliyu Isah; +234 9168487156, +234 8035557865 and email; draliyu95@gmail.com, among others to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

“The general public is by this notice advised to be wary of the perpetrators of these dubious activities and their cohorts; and disregard such information being peddled around.

“Any official enquiry and clarification should follow the official communication channels of the OSGF via www.osgf.gov.ng and info@osgf.gov.ng,” he said.

In view of the above, the SGF warns peddlers of such fraudulent requests to desist forthwith from using the Office to fleece unsuspecting members of the public or face the full wrath of the law.

The SGF had earlier in the month given the same warning to unsuspecting members of the public.

  • Probe report will expose rot in CBN – SGF

Probe report will expose rot in CBN – SGF

The federal government will soon make public the audit report of the probe of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), according to Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Akume said the impending release of the report will expose how poor governance brought Nigeria to its current economic challenges.

President Bola Tinubu had in July appointed a former Financial Reporting Council CEO, Jim Obazee, as Special Investigator to probe the CBN and key government business entities.

Akume disclosed that Obazee has submitted an interim report directly to the Presidency over a week ago.

The SGF said the preliminary findings aim to guide the President in taking decisive actions to move the country forward.

Sources suggest the interim report has already informed leadership changes at the CBN last week.

Akume noted the final report will enable Nigerians to understand what went wrong and the root causes of the present economic situation.

Tinubu’s directive in July asked Obazee to uncover any government funds in private hands through the CBN probe.

The investigation is reportedly faulting CBN’s recently released audited accounts from 2016 to 2022.

Consequently, the CBN may be directed to withdraw the financial reports deemed compromised by the probe.

The disclosure of an impending release of the audit report signals accountability for past financial mismanagement.

According to the SGF, the report will expose lapses that led Nigeria into its current economic woes.
