Tinubu has made conscious effort to stabilise economy – Shaibu

Former Deputy Governor of Edo, Mr Philip Shaibu, on Tuesday said that in the past one year President Bola Tinubu has made visible and conscious to stabilise the nation’s economy.

Shaibu, speaking with news men in Abuja shortly after been installed as the Patron of Edo Journalists in Abuja, said with time the economy would overcome its present challenges.

”I want to say that I am seeing conscious effort by the president to stabilise the economy.

“I see him working really hard, trying to bring experts, trying to get international community to buy into his vision of developing and growing our economy’’, Shaibu said.

He said that with an economy as complex as Nigeria’s, it would take a magician to fix it in one year.

”We know that. But in terms of infrastructure, I see conscious efforts to build infrastructure, which is also a driver of the economy.

”I saw what he did in Lagos just three days ago,  and in Abuja, I’m seeing lots of bridges being constructed.

”Like in my own street, for more than 10 years, Arab contractors abandoned the roads, including my street and the bridge connecting to zone one and seven, within six, seven months the road is ready for commissioning.

”So for me, infrastructure wise, I can see that there is serious boost in infrastructure development, though there are still lots of things to do’’, he said.

The former deputy governor called for deliberate efforts to build small and medium scale enterprises.

”We now need to consciously move to that next stage of building small scale and medium scale businesses.

”It is key and we must now turn Nigeria to a production economy, and that is why I am making governor Otti my number one governor for now.

”We need to start earning forex and the only way we can do that is for us to be a production economy.

“But before we rush into building or going into any forex, we need to produce for our local consumption’’, he said.

He said when the country was able to meet its local consumption it would be 50 per cent in dealing with inflation and capital flight.

”But if we continue this hollow block approach to building or retaining wall, you know, it’s disaster because that’s what I’m seeing now in what CBN is trying to do.

”So we need to consciously go into agriculture, and when we are going into that  like I always say, government has no business in business.

“Government has a business to provide enabling environment’’, he said.

Shaibu said there was need for the CBN to rejig its system with commercial banks with low interest rates.

”For us to be a production economy, especially in agriculture, if we are able to deal with the `stomach infrastructure` that will help to reduce the level of hunger.

”The whole issue of salary and wages, for me, is not the way forward, the way forward is how to make sure that we have food on our tables. First we must produce for our consumption’’, he said.

Shaibu commended Gov. Alex Otti of Abia for providing visionary leadership for the state.

”He has also done well in terms of trying to grow the GDP as well as expand the economy of Abia.

“I see a genuine technocrat bringing meaningful development and experience to open up Abia to the world.

”That has repaired some of the doubt we were beginning to have about this so called technocrats, because in my state it didn’t work, but it’s working in Abia’’, he told newsmen.

Shaibu said that in terms of security, the performance of the present administration in the country was relative.

According him, the situation is not as bad as it used to be. I can bet that it’s gradually stabilising. I can tell you that the level of insecurity in the country is going down.

‘’We are not yet there, but I can bet that it is not what it used to be, So I can say kudos to the president and the present sets of security heads. They are bringing the temperature down.

‘’But I think they still need to do more’’, he said.

Court dismisses Shaibu’s plea to nullify Ighodalo’s candidacy

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed a suit by the impeached Deputy Governor of Edo, Phillip Shaibu, seeking to nullify the Feb. 22 governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the produced Asue Ighodalo as its candidate.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment, held that Shaibu lacked the locus standi (legal right).to challenge the outcome of the primary on the grounds that he did not fully participate in the primary.

Justice Omotosho also held that the impeached deputy governor was not equally present at the venue of the primary the day it was held.

The judge further held that the suit by Shaibu was premature because he failed to exhaust the internal dispute resolution mechanism of the party before heading for the court.

He said, as a member of the PDP, he was bound by the rules and regulations of the party, which requires an aggrieved aspirant at a primary to first approach the party’s appeal committee before filing a suit in court.

He held that there was sufficient evidence to show that Ighodalo actually won the primary.

Obaseki on Shaibu’s ambition: I could not take that risk on Edo people

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has given his reasons for not supporting his former deputy, Philip Shaibu, to succeed him.

Obaseki stated that he could not take the risk of backing Shaibu to become the next governor, citing political permutations in the state that were against Shaibu.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the governor addressed the fallout between him and his former Deputy in the build-up to the Peoples Democratic Party primary election.

Speaking on the matter, Obaseki stated, “For me, I did not understand where the ambition was coming from because it was clear that the odds were not in his favor in terms of succeeding me, and I made it very clear.”

“So, I could not take any risk on his ambition because I have to protect the Edo people. So, I could not take that risk on Edo people.”

Shaibu, in response to his impeachment, described the development as an attack on the country’s democracy.

In a social media video post, Shaibu stated, “This is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the democracy that we hold dear.”

“It is a dangerous descent into dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of our democracy. Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. An ambition that is a legal right to all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Edo: Ighodalo denies alleged involvement in Shaibu’s impeachment

The PDP governorship candidate in the Sept. 21 governorship election in Edo, Dr Asue Ighodalo has denied any involvement in the impeachment of a former Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu.

Ighodalo made the denial in statement issued by his media campaign team and made available to newsmen on Monday in Benin.

Recall that on April 8, Shaibu was impeached, following the adoption of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state House of Assembly to probe allegations of misconduct against him.

The governorship candidate, however, said that he neither played any role nor was he involved in any form whatsoever in the process leading to Shuaibu’s impeachment and his subsequent removal from office by the state House of Assembly.

He urged the public to disregard claims purportedly linking him to the impeachment.

Ighodalo described the allegation as a clear attempt to unjustly tarnish his reputation and divert attention from the actual issues at hand.

He said that he remained focused on running a governorship campaign based on issues and devoid of distractions.

Impeachment: Court fixes date to hear Shaibu’s suit against Edo assembly, others

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed April 19 for hearing of a suit filed by the impeached Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, against the state house of assembly and others.

The matter, which was before Justice Inyang Ekwo, was on Friday fixed for hearing after a team of lawyers, including Alex Ejesieme, SAN, showed up to seek a date for the case.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/405/24, was not listed on the cause list, the lawyers, who said they were for the defence, came to the court.

Shortly before the judge rose, one of the lawyers told Justice Ekwo that the matter was scheduled to hold on Thursday but due to the public holiday, the court did not sit.

“So in obedience to court, we came today,” he said.

But Justice Ekwo, who held that he could not preside over a matter that was not in the file, directed them to liaise with the court registrar for the next adjourned date.

The matter was consequently fixed for April 19 for hearing.

NAN reports that in the suit dated March 26 but filed March 27, Shaibu sued the Inspector-General (IG) of Police; State Security Service (SSS) as 1st and 2nd respondents.

He also joined Hon. Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd.), the Chairman representing himself and members of the Panel of Seven Appointed by the 4th Defendant; the Chief Judge of Edo; and Prof. Theresa Akpoghome as 3rd to 5th respondents.

Shaibu, in the suit filed by O.A. Gbadamosi, SAN, also listed Mr President Aigbokhian; Mr Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu and the Edo State House of Assembly as 6th to 8th respondents respectively

In the originating motion on notice, a declaration that the threat and failure of the 3rd to 8th respondents to give him a fair hearing in the impeachment proceedings commenced by the 8th respondent is illegal, unconstitutional, and a gross violation of his fundamental right to fair hearing, pursuant to Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

He sought a declaration that the failure of the 8th respondent (assembly) to serve the purported impeachment notice on him personally and on each member of the House of Assembly, in line with Section 188(2) of the 1999 Constitution is a violation of his right to fair hearing.

He also sought a declaration that the inclusion of the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th respondents as chairman and members of the seven-member Investigation panel to investigate allegations contained in a purported impeachment notice to the applicant is tainted by a reasonable likelihood of bias and will result in a violation of the applicant’s fundamental right to fair hearing, guaranteed by virtue of Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.”

He sought an order directing the respondents not to take any further steps in violating his fundamental right to fair hearing, guaranteed by virtue of Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.

He also sought an order directing the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th respondents to recuse themselves from sitting as Chairman and members of the 7-Man Investigating Panel appointed by the 3rd respondent, on account of the likelihood of bias on their part against him, among other reliefs.

Giving seven grounds of argument, Shaibu averred that before now, he had never been confronted with any of such notice or allegations of misconduct or abuse of office or any allegations at all, whether as deputy governor or acting governor.

He said he had not been served with any letter/notice as required by Section 188(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended and no privilege had been accorded him by the assembly to provide answers to any purported allegations to warrant a process targeted at his removal from office as deputy governor.

“The 3rd respondent via a letter dated 25th March, 2024 was appointed by the 4th respondent as the chairman of a panel of seven persons to investigate the allegations contained in a purported impeachment notice, which is yet to be personally served on the applicant.

“The 3rd respondent is a retired judicial officer and community leader from Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo Central Senatorial District, where there is strong clamour against the gubernatorial ambition of the applicant.

“The 3rd respondent appears to have been given the hatchet job of recommending the removal from office of the applicant, in order to weaken his political ambition of becoming governor of Edo State.

“The 4th respondent being a protégé of the 3rd respondent, appointed him as chairman of the Investigating Panel, when other persons he offered the same appointment rejected it, because it was a politically motivated job,” he said, among other grounds.

Shaibu was, on Monday, impeached by the state’s house of assembly after the seven-man panel found him guilty of perjury and leaking of the government’s secrets.

The retired Justice Omonuwa-led panel, which had its inaugural sitting on April 3 in Benin, ended its sitting on April 5 with Shaibu or his counsel failing to show up.

Edo: Shaibu shouldn’t leave PDP, can still be governor – Lagos Chair

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the impeached Edo Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu, to be patient with the party, saying he could still become governor of the state.

The PDP Lagos State Chairman, Mr Philip Aivoji, made the appeal in an interview with NAN on Tuesday in Lagos, following the impeachment of Shaibu by the House of Assembly.

The Edo House of Assembly on Monday impeached Shaibu following the adoption of the recommendation of a seven-man judicial panel led by retired Justice Stephen Omonua.

The relationship between Shaibu and his boss, Gov. Godwin Obaseki, went sour when the former indicated interest to succeed the latter, the development which led to the a parallel party governorship primary in Feb.

Consequent upon Shaibu’s removal, Obaseki immediately appointed and swore in 38-year-old Mr Omobayo Godwin as his new deputy.

Reacting, Aivoji said that Shaibu should remain in the party in spite the development, and never to consider leaving the party at all.

He said that Shaibu could still become the governor of the state with perseverance and patience.

“What we are concerned about is winning Edo back for PDP. The impeached deputy governor needs to be patient and hand over everything to God.

“Whatever happens, no one ever can tell, he (Shaibu) can still become the governor in a future. He should not leave the party.

“That is my advice because it is the party that brought him up. When he became the deputy governor, there were millions of people who could have become the deputy governor before the party picked him.

“Since this has happened, he should look for a way of mending fences to actualise his dream of becoming the governor. He can still become the governor,” he said.

On whether or not the impeachment of Shaibu would affect the fortune of the party in the Sept. 21 governorship election in the state, Aivoji said he didn’t think so.

“If it would affect, they (the lawmakers) would not have taken that decision, ” he said.

Aivoji called on the Edo chapter PDP to work harder and block all necessary loopholes to win the election.

  • Shaibu: Office of Deputy Governor should be abolished – Ex-presidential aide

Shaibu: Office of Deputy Governor should be abolished – Ex-presidential aide

Former presidential aide, Okoi Obono-Obla has called for the abolishment of Office of Deputy Governor in Nigeria.

Obono-Obla reacted to the travails of Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuiabu, who is facing impeachment.

“I feel sorry for the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Honourable Philip Shuiabu.

“I think the position of Deputy Governor should be abolished by the Constitution. The Speaker of the State House of Assembly should succeed any State Governor.

“This would require a constitutional amendment or alteration abolishing the position of Deputy Governor.”

He explained that since the advent of democratic civil rule in the country, deputy governors have been at the receiving end of the actions of imperialistic and despotic governors in the country.

“As a result, impeachment procedure is always dangling on the hands of deputy governors like the sword of damocles,” he added.

Obono-Obla noted that impeachment is a serious matter, warning that it must not be used as a weapon of blackmail deputy governors.

The resolution was passed during plenary in Benin.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Blessing Agbebaku, during plenary, notified the house that the seven days ultimatum granted the deputy governor to respond to the impeachment notice served on him had expired.

Agbebaku reminded the house that impeachment notice was served on the deputy governor on March 6 but due to his alleged evasion of service, the house ordered a substituted service.

He said the substituted service was published in the Nigerian Observer and the Vanguard newspapers on March 12, adding that by counting, March 19 made it seven days.

In his motion, the Majority Leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghan, moved that the chief judge be directed to set up seven-man committee to investigate the petition against the deputy governor.

The motion was seconded by Nicholas Asonsere, (PDP- Ikpoba Okha).

Aiguobarueghan disclosed that the motion was in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“That the notice served on the deputy governor alleging gross misconduct be sent for investigations.

“And that the speaker directs the chief judge of the state to set up a seven-man committee to look at the allegations and report its findings to this house as soon as possible,”he said.

  • Edo 2024: Intimidation, harassment won’t stop me – Shaibu

Edo 2024: Intimidation, harassment won’t stop me – Shaibu

Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu, says intimidation and harassment will not change his resolve in the pursuit of his political ambition.

Shaibu said this while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.

Recall that Shaibu emerged the party’s candidate in a parallel primary held on Thursday to choose a standard bearer for the upcoming governorship election in Edo.

He alleged so much intimidation and harassment of people in the build-up to the primary.

“The level of intimidation and harassment meted out to me and those people who believe in me was beyond comprehension, yet it does not actually change our resolve in what we believe in.

“People were sacked, some civil servants were suspended, others transferred from their position and taken away from their family comfort to different places, all because they were associating with me.

“Well, I dare say that anybody still intimidating or harassing anybody means that he is not ready to win an election“, he told newsmen.

He, therefore, said that his emergence as a candidate was no longer about him but the people, adding that it was imperative the party listened to the voice of the people.

He said if the party truly desired to win the election on Sept. 21 it would field a popular and competent candidate not impose a candidate on the people.

He also said that the PDP must adhere to the electoral laws and party guidelines to be able to win the upcoming election in the state.

He explained that there were party guidelines for electing a governorship candidate, just as there is an electoral law guiding political activities.

Shaibu further said for the PDP to win the upcoming governorship election in the state, it should adhere strictly to its own rules and guidelines.

The deputy governor also alleged that elections were about contestation, noting that the other primary that produced Mr Asue Ighodalo as its candidate disenfranchised 381 delegates.

“The electoral law forbids exclusion. An election can be re-ordered because of exclusion, it is a major sin that the law forbids“, he told newsmen.

He said though political parties have the right to produce candidates, such rights must comply with the electoral laws and the party’s own guidelines.

“If the guideline is not followed in the process of producing your candidate, that candidate cannot see the light of day.

“So the ultimate right of any party is to follow your rules in producing your candidate”, Shaibu said.

NAN recalls that Ighodalo defeated about nine other candidates including the Deputy Governor of the state in the election.

He had vote 577 votes to become the candidate of the PDP in the Sept. 21 governorship election in the state while his closest rival garnered one vote.

The Chairman, Edo PDP Primary Electoral Committee and Gov of Dauda Lawal Zamfara declared him as the winner of the exercise.

However, in a parallel exercise, Shaibu was declared winner of the election.

The returning officer, Bartholomew Moses, declared: “during the counting of this primary election, Philip Shaibu has a score of 301 votes.

“Therefore, I hereby declare Philip Shaibu as the authentic elected candidate for this election in the PDP.”
