  • Shakira pays  $7.2 million in another  Spain tax fraud case

Shakira pays  $7.2 million in another  Spain tax fraud case

Colombian superstar Shakira has paid 6.6 million euros ($7.2 million) to a Spanish court investigating her for unpaid taxes, her agent said Friday, just days after she reached a deal to avoid trial in another tax case.

Spanish prosecutors in July opened a second case against the 46-year-old singer, accusing her of using a network of companies, some of them based in tax havens, to cheat Spain’s tax office out of some 6.6 million euros in 2018, including interest and adjustments.

Shakira paid the court in August, the agency that represents her told AFP, confirming a report in daily newspaper El Periodico.

The 6.6-million-euro payment does not imply either the singer’s guilt or innocence in the case, but is “another demonstration of her willingness to repay her possible debts to the Spanish tax authorities”, the newspaper said.

Separately, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer Monday reached a last-minute settlement with Spanish prosecutors to avoid trial for tax fraud on income she earned between 2012 and 2014.

As part of that deal Shakira agreed to pay a fine of 7.3 million euros, equal to 50 percent of the amount of unpaid tax.

She had already paid 17.45 million euros to the Spanish tax authorities to settle her situation in this case.

The singer, who had previously rejected a deal offered by prosecutors, said in a statement she had settled “with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight”.

Shakira moved to Miami with her two sons in April following her split from former FC Barcelona star defender Gerard Pique.

Alleged Tax Fraud: Shakira faces jail term in Spain

Grammy Award winning  Colombian music sensation, Shakira is facing jail terms in Barcelona, Spain over alleged tax fraud.

The 46-year old singer is being accused of defrauding the Spanish state of 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) in income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira denies the charges, maintaining that she only moved to Spain full-time in 2015.

According to Spanish authorities, she spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country, claiming that Shakira utilized a network of companies based in tax havens to avoid paying taxes in Spain.

The singer’s lawyer argues that until 2014, she led a “nomadic life,” earning most of her income from international tours, stating that she permanently moved to Barcelona just before the birth of her second son in January 2015.

Shakira also shed more light on the allegations in an interview she had with Elle magazine in 2022, Shakira asserted,

“I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So, as of today, I owe zero to them.”

Shakira’s trial, scheduled to run until December 14, commenced today at a Barcelona court. The court is set to hear from nearly 120 witnesses.

The prosecution seeks a jail term of eight years and two months, along with a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24 million) for the singer.

While Shakira is expected to testify during the opening session, she may request permission to be absent from the remaining hearings.

The trial is anticipated to shed light on details of her private life, with Spanish prosecutors conducting a meticulous investigation, including interviews with neighbours, tracking social media activity, and examining payments at local establishments.

The global music icon’s financial affairs were previously brought into the spotlight in the “Pandora Papers” leak in October 2021, revealing details related to her residence in the Bahamas.

Shakira’s trial follows Spain’s crackdown on tax evasion by celebrities, including football stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The outcome of this high-profile case will be closely watched, given the recent legal actions against prominent figures for similar financial matters in the country.

  • Shakira to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud

Shakira to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud

Colombian pop idol Shakira is set to go on trial in Barcelona on Monday for allegedly cheating Spain’s tax office out of 14.5 million euros.

Prosecutors are seeking a jail term of eight years and two months, and a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24 million dollars) for the 46-year-old singer, who now lives in Miami with her two sons Milan and Sasha.

She has denied any wrongdoing and turned down a plea deal with prosecutors, paving the way for the trial which is set to get underway on Monday at 10:00 am (0900 GMT).

The case centres on where the singer, whose hit singles include “Hips Don’t Lie”, “Whenever, Wherever” and the 2010 World Cup song “Waka Waka”, lived between 2012 and 2014.

Prosecutors allege Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll — dubbed the Queen of Latin Pop — spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.

They say she moved to Spain after her relationship with FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique became public in 2011, but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.

In its indictment, the prosecution claims that Shakira “used a set of companies” based in tax havens “with the intention of not paying” tax in Spain.

Shakira’s lawyers say that until 2014, she was leading a “nomadic life” and earned most of her money from international tours and that she only moved permanently to Barcelona just before the birth of her second son in January 2015.

The high-profile trial is expected to hear from nearly 120 witnesses and to run until December 14.

While the singer is expected to testify during the opening session of the trial, she may request permission from the court to not be present at the remaining hearings.

Even without her presence, details of her private life will likely emerge during the proceedings, since Spanish prosecutors carried out a meticulous investigation to prove their case.

They interviewed her neighbours, tracked her images on social networks, checked her payments at hairdressers and even the health clinic she attended during her pregnancy to prove their accusation.

    ‘Not a UN Diplomat’

Questions about the singer’s finances have been raised before. The diva was named in the 2021 “Pandora Papers” leaks, which revealed the wealth and tax avoidance strategies of the global rich, in her case relating to her residence in the Bahamas.

The trial comes after Shakira had a big night at the Latin Grammy Awards held in Seville in southern Spain on Thursday, where she performed twice and picked up three awards, including for song of the year and best pop song for her collaboration with Argentine DJ Bizarrap on “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”.

The track takes swipes at her former partner Pique — the couple broke up last year after a decade-long relationship — and includes a reference to being left with a “debt to the tax office”. It has been played almost 1.5 billion times on Spotify and YouTube.

“People on my team tried to convince me to change the lyrics, but I’m not a UN diplomat. I am an artist and, above all, a woman,” Shakira said in an interview published in Spanish celebrity magazine ¡Hola! in which she made no reference to her looming trial.

One of the highlights of the Latin Grammys was her rendition of her ballad “Acróstico”. Wearing a glittering gold high-cut gown adorned with an image of the Virgin Mary, the singer performed the song, with her two sons which she had with Pique appearing in a pre-recorded video on screen to join her in singing it.

  • Shakira breaks YouTube records with song about Gerard Pique cheating on her

Shakira breaks YouTube records with song about Gerard Pique cheating on her

Colombian singer and songwriter, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, professionally known by the mononym Shakira, has broken YouTube records with a song she sang about her ex-partner, Gerard Pique, cheating on her.

The video for Out of Your League has been watched more than 63 million times in 24 hours, making it the most-watched Latin song in that time period.

Shakira, 45, separated from former Barcelona footballer Pique, 35, in 2022 after more than 10 years together.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the pair have two children together.

This four-minute pop song is the first time Shakira and Argentinian producer and DJ Bizarrap have worked together.

Shakira joined a hallowed list of Latin performers to break YouTube records – including J Balvin, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

It’s not her first song about the breakup – Monotonia came out three months ago, but was more of a heartbreak song than one vying for revenge.

In the diss track, Shakira sings about Pique’s new alleged 23-year-old partner.

She says she is “worth two 22-year-olds” and compares the relationship to swapping “a Ferrari for a [Renault] Twingo” and a “Rolex for a Casio” in Spanish.

The Colombian singer also referenced her run-in with the Spanish authorities, who claim she has failed to pay €14.5m (£12.8m) in income tax.

Shakira appears to say in the song that Pique left her whilst all this was going on, with her in-laws as neighbours.

She criticises his workout technique too – singing “lots of time at the gym, but your brain needs a little work too”.

Gerard Pique has not responded to the song online, but has been posting about his new seven-a-side project, King’s League.

The pair released a statement when they split in June last year, saying they were focusing on co-parenting their children Milan, nine, and Sasha, aged seven.
