A Sharia Court ll at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, has ordered one Maryam Muhammad to refund the N20,000 dowry paid for her by Mansur Yakubu, her husband, as condition for divorce.

The complainant, who filed a case against her husband, told the court that she could no longer tolerate her husband and wished to divorce him through khul’i (Redemption).

“I can’t live with this man because I can’t tolerate him anymore, as such I want Khul’i, I will return the N20,000 he paid as dowry,” Maryam said.

Khul’i is a form of divorce permitted in Islam, where a woman initiates divorce by returning the dowry she received from her husband.

She also urged the court to compel Yakubu to be a responsible father to their two-month-old baby while in her custody and allow her to pack her belongings from his house.

The defendant, who said he still loved his wife, stated that he paid N25,000 as dowry, not N20,000 as Maryam claimed.

The court ordered the complainant to pack all her belongings from her ex-husband’s house under the supervision of a court official.

  • Islamists planning to exchange Nigeria’s constitution with Sharia ideology – Christian Elders

Islamists planning to exchange Nigeria’s constitution with Sharia ideology – Christian Elders

Retired military generals and some Christian elders under the aegis of the National Christian Elders Forum, NCEF, have alleged that some Islamists are planning to exchange Nigeria’s constitution with Sharia based ideologies.

The elders noted that if not well handled by the appropriate authorities, another war might be imminent.

The group stated that Jihad or holy Islamic war had been launched in the country to eradicate democracy and supplant the Constitution.

Rising from a meeting on Thursday in Abuja where it reviewed unfolding events in the country, the NCEF, a group of eminent Christian elders, noted that the nation was in the throes of jihad.

Those in attendance at the meeting included Elder Solomon Asemota, Gen. Joshua Dogonyaro (retd.), Gen. Zamani Lekwot (retd.), Elder Moses Ihonde, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), Elder Shyngle Wigwe, and Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife.

They called on Nigerian leaders to tread softly to avoid the impending implosion.

In a communique issued after the meeting and signed by its chairman, Asemota, SAN, the NCEF noted with concern the budding constitutional crisis in the country.

It stated that the threat of another major ethnic conflict, occasioned by the Indigenous People of Biafra’s call for secession and the response of Arewa Northern Youths for the eviction of the Igbo from the North, the agitations for fiscal federalism and resource control, among many other regional agitations, could snowball into a major crisis in the country.

The group said, “The real problem with the country is that Jihad has been launched in Nigeria and Islamists that have been interfering in the governance of the country using “Taqiyya” (approved deception) as “Stealth/Civilisation Jihad” and Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen as violent Jihad, are relentless in their pursuit of eradicating democracy in Nigeria.

“The objective of the Islamists (Political Islam) is to supplant the constitution of Nigeria with Sharia ideology as the source of legislation in the nation. The conflict between democracy as national ideology and Sharia as a usurping ideology is responsible for the crisis unfolding in Nigeria. The nation is in the throes of Jihad.”

The Christian body also observed that the conflicting signals emanating from the Presidency and the Senate, as well as the unrelenting attacks of Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen, had not helped the situation, noting that the Presidency appeared to be at war with itself and at conflict with the National Assembly.

“…If grazing reserve is a must for the Fulani herdsmen, instead of ranching which is the international best practice, NCEF recommends that Sambisa Forest should be given to the Fulani herdsmen,” it added.

The NCEF condemned what it called the brazen attempt at Islamising Nigeria with the introduction of Religion and National Values subject “which denigrates Christianity and promotes Islam.”

“The NCEF joins in the demand that Christian Religious Knowledge, and Islamic Religious Knowledge, revert to the original status as stand-alone subjects,” it added.

  • Boko Haram publicly executes eight for defying ‘Sharia police’

Boko Haram have publicly executed eight villagers in northeast Nigeria who opposed the enforcement of its hardline form of Islam, according to a graphic video seen by AFP.

The eight were blindfolded and lying face down on the ground when they were shot at close range by four masked gunmen. Crowds were seen cheering, the images showed.

One man wearing a white turban told the crowd before the execution that the condemned villagers were “apostates (who) have left the fold of Islam”.

“These people are not different from vigilantes fighting us, spies and Nigerian soldiers,” said the unidentified man in Hausa, which is widely spoken in northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad area.

He said the eight had defied Boko Haram’s “Sharia police” — members who ensure the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic law is enforced — and threatened to fight them.

The man warned that anyone else defying the jihadists would suffer a similar fate. It was not clear when or where the gruesome footage was taken but lush vegetation indicated it was in the ongoing rainy season.

The video showed other punishments, including stoning to death for adultery; beheading for drug dealing; amputations for theft; and flogging for drinking alcohol.

Boko Haram’s message appears to be designed to debunk Nigerian military claims that it is a spent force that has lost all territories under its control.

The Islamic State group affiliate declared a caliphate in August 2014 after capturing towns and villages across northeast Nigeria.

In October 2014, a similar video was released showing a man being stoned to death for adultery, an amputation for theft and a couple being lashed for having sex outside marriage.

A separate video in the same month appeared to show the beheading of an air force pilot captured after his fighter jet was shot down.

Since early 2015 Boko Haram has been forced out by sustained counter-insurgency operations involving troops from Nigeria and its neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Nigeria claims the group is virtually defeated but the latest footage demonstrates there remains pockets where Boko Haram still operates and holds sway over local populations

  • Why Boko Haram chopped off my leg, hand – former terrorist

Why Boko Haram chopped off my leg, hand – former terrorist

Muhammad Abubakar, a 31 year-old Boko Haram insurgent on Thursday said his hand and leg were chopped off because he was planing to surrender and quit the battle in Sambisa forest.

Abubakar disclosed this to newsmen in Maiduguri during briefing organised by Major-General Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, to update journalists on ‘Operation Rescue Finale’.

Abubakar said he was punished because his decision to renounce his membership of the group and embrace peace.

“I had told a friend, Hassan Dan-Guduma, that I was going to surrender as the movement had no meaning to me anymore.

“Hassan Dan-Guduma initially bought my idea but later betrayed me. Shortly after our discussion, he went and came back with three others whom I am sure he must have told them about our plan to surrender.

“They said I was planing to exposed them to the Nigerian Government, so they did all this to me.

”After they chopped off my right hand and left leg, they threw me into a culvert where I was left struggling, until soldiers came and rescued me.

”All I can say is that all we had been told by Boko Haram leaders were lies and misleading. I never joined them to kill anyone,” he said.

Major-General Irabor said Abubakar was still undergoing interrogation.

“You can see what they did to one of their own because he decided to quit,” said Irabor.
