EPL: Sheffield United slammed with two point deduction next season

Already relegated Sheffield United will have two points deducted at the start of the next season when they play in the English Football League.
It was gathered that the two point deduction is punishment for defaulting on payments to other clubs.

The charges relate to the 2022/2023 season, when the Blades were promoted from the Championship.

Sheffield United were also given a further two points suspended, which will be activated if they default on a payment to another club.

“An independent Disciplinary Commission (IDC) has determined that Sheffield United Football Club are to be deducted two points at the start of the next season the Club is in the EFL’s jurisdiction, with a further two points suspended until the end of that same season,” the EFL statement said.

Sheffield United have confirmed they will not appeal the sanction and have agreed to pay the EFL’s costs of 310,455 pounds.

EPL: Arsenal dismantle Sheffield United 6-0 at Bramall Lane

Title-chasing Arsenal on monday night dismantled the rock-bottom Blades at Bramall Lane with a 6-0 victory, scoring five times inside the opening 39 minutes to equal the joint-largest leading margin at half-time in a Premier League match.

Arsenal  were playing catch-up following weekend wins for rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, but any slim fears of a major shock were over inside 25 minutes as the visitors stormed into a four-goal lead.
Martin Odegaard set the ball rolling before a Jayden Bogle own goal was followed by strikes from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz.
Declan Rice then added a fifth four minutes before the break to ensure Arsenal equalled the record for the most goals scored by one team in the first half of a Premier League match.
Sheffield United had been abysmal, but did offer some resistance in the second half until Ben White got in on the act with a fizzing strike from the right side of the area just shy of the hour.
The result sees third-placed Arsenal move back to within two points of leaders Liverpool who meet second-placed Manchester City next weekend.
Arsenal will now aim to make it eight league wins on the bounce and move top – ahead of that Sunday clash between the Reds and the Blues – when they host Brentford on Saturday.

Sheffield United also became the first team in English football history to concede five goals in four consecutive home games across all competitions, leaving Carragher scathing of their approach.

EPL: Arsenal thrash Sheffield United 6-0

Arsenal cruised to a seventh successive Premier League win as they put six past a dreadful Sheffield United side at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners were 3-0 up inside 13 minutes and led 5-0 at half-time against the league’s bottom side.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ben White scored – with an own goal from Jayden Bogle – for Mikel Arteta’s team.

The win ensures Arsenal move two points behind leaders Liverpool.

It keeps the Gunners in the thick of the title race, while in contrast Sheffield United are 11 points from safety with just 11 games remaining.

Arsenal scored after five minutes, with the only surprise being that it took them so long. They carved United open down the left, before the ball was cut back for Odegaard – unmarked 10 yards out – to slot home.

The lead was doubled in the 13th minute – Bukayo Saka’s low cross was deflected into his own net by Bogle, who got his legs in a tangle with the ball deflecting off his ankle – and was quickly extended when Martinelli fired in via a deflection after Jakob Kiwior’s cut back.

As fans once again streamed out of Bramall Lane during the first half, Havertz made it 4-0 by tucking into the bottom corner following a Martinelli through ball.

Arsenal cut through United at will, and another slick move of short passes on 39 minutes ended in Rice finishing low past the beleaguered home keeper Ivo Grbic.

The visitors did not ease up after the break, as another well-worked move ended in right-back White firing powerfully past Grbic with his left foot.

The Gunners have become the first English league side to win three consecutive away games by a margin of five or more goals, while United – seemingly doomed to relegation – are the first English league side to lose four consecutive home games in all competitions while conceding five or more goals.

EPL: Fabregas predicts Sheffield United vs Arsenal clash

Former Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas has posited that Arsenal will defeat Sheffield United on Monday night.

Arsenal are billed to slug it out with relegation battling Sheffied United at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners are in fine form and have won all their Premier League fixtures in 2024.

And Fabregas believes the run will continue, as Mikel Arteta’s men will prove to be too strong for the blades.

He said: “I see Arsenal at the moment as too strong. I see them confident.

“I know they lost against Porto, but I think in the Premier League nowadays they are two levels up and I believe that they know exactly what they’re doing.

“I’m sure they believe, and they’re pushing from the staff point of view to win this game more than anything because these games win titles.

“There’s a bit of everything but, at the moment, I see Arsenal a little bit too strong to be dropping points there.”

EPL: Chris Wilder returns to Sheffield United as manager

English Premier League side, Sheffield United on Tuesday reappointed Chris Wilder as manager after sacking Paul Heckingbottom following a miserable start to the Premier League season.

Sheffild United. CEO Stephen Bettis said the club, bottom of the table, needed a “boost” in their battle for survival.

Heckingbottom is the first manager to be fired this season in the English top flight after 11 defeats in 14 league games, leaving them four points from safety.

Bettis praised Heckingbottom’s “professionalism and dedication” in a club statement.

“However, after slipping to the bottom of the table and several disappointing results and performances, it is felt that a change is needed to give the club a boost and every possible chance of remaining in the Premier League beyond this season,” he said.

Shortly afterwards, the club issued a fresh statement, confirming Wilder was back in the hot seat, having signed a contract until 2025.

“Quite simply it was an opportunity which I just couldn’t turn down,” Wilder said. “Just like in 2016, when this club comes calling, it is not something you pass up.

“This is Sheffield United, it is my team and I am thrilled to be back. We find ourselves in a difficult position, I understand that, but I think I can make a difference.”

Bettis said Wilder, 56, was “the best possible option to give the Blades a change in fortune”.

Heckingbottom, appointed permanent manager in November 2021, guided the club back to the Premier League with a second-place Championship finish last season.

The 46-year-old voiced his frustration after his side’s 5-0 defeat at Burnley at the weekend — the club’s third loss by five goals or more this season.

Some away supporters turned on Heckingbottom towards the end of the match.

“The fans are right to shout, say that wasn’t good enough. I was almost singing along with them at one point,” Heckingbottom said.

He said the club were paying the price for a difficult summer transfer window, during which he lost key players.

“There wasn’t a desire from the ownership to sell but a necessity from a business point of view,” he said. “We’ve been making financial decisions rather than football decisions. Of course that affects me.”

Despite the struggles of a number of clubs at the bottom of the Premier League, Heckingbottom is the first managerial departure this season — there were a record 14 managerial changes in the 2022/23 campaign.

Wilder, a popular figure at Bramall Lane, left by mutual consent in March 2021 after almost five years in charge. He has since had spells at Middlesbrough and Watford.

EPL: Sheffield United fire manager,  Paul Heckingbottom

Paul Heckingbottom, Sheffield United manager, has been fired by the management of the the premier League side.

This was revealed by Italian  football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano on Monday morning.

“Sheffield United have sacked the manager Paul Heckingbottom. He is the first PL head coach to be fired in the 2023/24 season in the English Premier League.

“Chris Wilder, set to return on Sheffield Utd bench — as @JPercyTelegraph has revealed,” Romano tweeted.

It comes 48 hours after Sheffield United were thrashed 5-0 by fellow relegation battlers, Burnley.

The result leaves them rooted to the bottom of the league table with five points from 14 fixtures.

  • Sheffield United relegated from Premier League

Sheffield United relegated from Premier League

Sheffield United’s miserable season was capped after relegation was finally confirmed following a 0-1 defeat at Wolves.

The rock-bottom Blades will play in the Sky Bet Championship next term after Willian Jose’s second-half winner.

Under caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom, Sheffield United are 19 points from safety with six games remaining and have won just four times all season.

The Blades have lost 26 of their 32 games, having finished ninth last term, with their two-year stay in the Premier League over.

They rarely looked like earning a stay of execution, although Enda Stevens was denied by Rui Patricio.

Mid-table Wolves also struggled to find serious momentum in a forgettable game, but Oliver Norwood did head Willy Boly’s fortunate first-half effort off the line.

Newcastle United’s late win over West Ham earlier in the day had left Sheffield United needing to avoid defeat to delay their inevitable return to the second tier.

There was little intensity from the visitors in a drab first half though, and Wolves came closest to an opener after 21 minutes.

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s corner-kick was chested down by Jose and John Egan’s clearance ricochet off Boly’s heel to loop towards goal.

But a combination of Norwood and the crossbar kept the ball out.

Daniel Podence’s half-volley flew over after half an hour but Wolves —— firmly stuck in mid-table —— failed to convince they would break the monotony.

The biggest flashpoint came nine minutes before the break when Ait-Nouri was lucky to avoid a red card.

The defender landed on Rhian Brewster’s ankle when trying to shield the ball but VAR did not intervene and it was Brewster who was booked for the challenge.

The game meandered into the break and there was nothing to suggest the scoreline would change during a low-key start to the second half.

Yet, belatedly, Sheffield United did conjure their first chance of the game after 59 minutes —— only for it to lead to Wolves’ winner.

Brewster’s low cross found the unmarked Stevens and his low strike was blocked by Nelson Semedo.

Immediately, Wolves broke with Semedo and Podence combining to send Traore away.

He then breezed past Egan for Jose to sweep in his first Wolves goal from six yards.

Stevens’ quick turn and shot forced a good save from Rui Patricio as Sheffield United woke up but it was too late.

Aaron Ramsdale denied Romain Saiss from point-blank range with seven minutes left.

Fabio Silva then shot straight at the goalkeeper and Traore sliced wide on the break as time ran out on Sheffield United’s top-flight stay.

  • EPL: Martinelli and Lacazette secure Arsenal’s win

EPL: Martinelli and Lacazette secure Arsenal’s win

Gabriel Martinelli scored in his first start since January as Arsenal ended a run of four games without a win with victory over the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United.

The Brazilian has endured an injury-plagued season, but was on hand to net his side’s second with a finish into an unguarded goal after Aaron Ramsdale had pushed out Nicolas Pepe’s shot.

It was the 19-year-old’s first goal since January 2020.

It came between two Alexandre Lacazette goals – the first a neat first-half finish after Dani Ceballos’ back-heel and the second a clinical effort in the closing stages after he was put clear by Thomas Partey.

Sheffield United have won only four games this season and none since Paul Heckingbottom took caretaker charge a month ago and they had little answer to their opponents’ increased efficiency.

At 1-0 there was always a chance that this generous Arsenal side may provide the Blades with a way back in, but Martinelli’s strike ended such home hopes.

The win lifts Arsenal above Leeds and Aston Villa and up to ninth in the table, with 45 points.

Sheffield United remain rooted to the bottom, 18 points from safety with just 21 left to play for. With their woeful goal difference, a loss at Wolves next Saturday will all but confirm their relegation.

  • Solskjaer urges Man Utd to move on quickly after shock defeat

Solskjaer urges Man Utd to move on quickly after shock defeat

Manchester United suffered a huge blow to their Premier League title chances after a shock 2-1 loss to Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

The result means Manchester City remain one point clear at the top with a game in hand on their neighbours.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have been annoyed with David De Gea after the Spaniard’s weak attempt to deny the Blades opening goal.

After a corner was sent into the six-yard box, instead of clearing the ball with a fierce punch, a meek De Gea was beaten in the air by Kean Bryan, who couldn’t believe his luck when his header sailed into an empty net.

Unlike at Fulham last week, United did not respond immediately with a goal of their own as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford looked particularly lethargic in attack.

Solskjaer left his side unchanged after the half-time interval and would have thought a victory was imminent when Harry Maguire equalised with a sharp header after 64 minutes.

But it was Oli Burke’s deflected shot off Axel Tuanzebe which decided the game and handed the visitors their first win over the Red Devils since 1992.

Chris Wilder’s side will be dreaming of a great escape as they move to within ten points of safety with plenty of games remaining in the season.

And speaking after the game, Solskjaer urges his team to move on quickly from the disappointing result.

He said: “Disappointed, we couldn’t get to the heights of the last few months’ football we played. Very disappointing, we couldn’t find a solution to their very compact block and good defence.

“Two wrong decisions, that’s how it is, it’s that kind of season, inconsistent and the referee missed those two.

“That little spark, that edge, we didn’t have that extra creativity, imagination, the X factor we’ve had – it’s happened, we look at it, agree it is not good enough and go again.

“We conceded a poor goal, lost the ball cheaply up the pitch, didn’t get back in and tackle, didn’t clear our lines and didn’t get out to the ball quick enough and we were punished.

“There is no time to feel sorry for yourself because Saturday you go again, we have Arsenal, we have to forget this, learn from it and move on.”

Tottenham go fourth with win at Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur have moved back into the top four in the 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL), thanks to a 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United on Sunday.

Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, with a stunning third goal secured victory for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Spurs are now level with third-placed Liverpool, though the champions can go top if they beat leaders Manchester United later Sunday.

Sheffield United remain bottom with just five points from 19 games, 11 points from safety at the halfway point in the season.
